Thomas Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population, published in 1798, was a work much more widely discussed than read. This selection represents a wide range of arguments that followed this contentious work - from those who vehemently attacked Malthusian notions to those who passionately defended them. Including articles by William Cobbett, William Hazlitt, and Thomas de Quincey, this volume brings together some of the most lively contributors to the debate.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide to a Great Series.......2003-09-04

Babylon 5 was unique in television. The main plot for the entire series was mapped out before the show even started. As a result, it developed a loyal fan base that still loves it.

This book is the second in a series of five episode guides to the series. Covering the second season, it has a separate chapter for each of the twenty-two episodes. Each starts with a plot summary, but then goes into behind the scenes stories and commentaries. Through interviews with cast, crew, and creator J. Michael Straczynski, author Jane Killick is able to give a full picture of what went into each episode. Some of my favorite parts are the stories of bloopers or jokes the cast played on each other. I also find the summaries useful if I'm looking for a particular episode to rewatch.

Starting out the book are two essays. The first provides insight into the challenges faced in producing Babylon 5 on the tight budget they had and the creative ways that the crew overcame them. The second in an introduction to the second season, painting broad strokes of the story arcs introduced and developed over the course of the season.

Any fan will love to have this well researched book for a behind the scenes look at a wonderful piece of science fiction television history.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for the B5 Viewer.......2002-11-07

The Babylon 5: Season by Season guidebooks are an essential read for fans of the TV series. Containing photos, interviews, essays, and in-depth rundowns of each episode, each book is indispensable for B5 vets and newbies alike. Strongly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A great book series, but if you are new to the show..........2001-10-24

This is a really good book series for B5 fans. It makes a great companion & fun reading after you have watched each show. But I would recommend it mainly for those that have seen the series & are watching it again. The reason I say that is because it is laced with spoilers all throughout the commentaries. That's fine if you've seen the whole thing already, but it stinks if you are watching it for the first time. If you don't mind that sort of thing...go for it, but this is the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. For a good "non-spoiler" companion guide, I highly recommend The Babylon File: The Definitive Unauthorized Guide to J. Michael Straczynski's TV Series Babylon 5 by Andy Lane (Versions 1 & 2). He shows no mercy sometimes. If he does or doesn't like the show, he let's you know. But it's a blast to read.

4 out of 5 stars Shadows and more........2000-03-24

One of the more popular episodes of Babylon 5 is fleshed out in this exciting look into the calm before the storm of the Shadows. G'Kar the Narn, is unable to find anyone who is willing to listen to his warnings about the coming menace. It seems that the certain people already know of the Shadows and are desperate not to let on about thier knowledge, as they attempt to mount a plan of attack. The book is well written and has a lively pace. It is great to get into the minds of some of the popular characters, and the book expands on what was a great episode to start with.

                    2 out of 5 stars Bewildering.......2002-01-05

The author's episode by episode analysis is excellent. But the rest of the book is irrational. The author obviously was very disappointed in the last two seasons of Babylon 5, but his ravings outside the synopses make no sense, and clearly conflict with what he wrote in the synopses. When the author of a book can't agree with himself, there's a problem. It's unfortunate that there will never be a true sequel to the author's first volume of The Babylon File, which was excellent.

4 out of 5 stars an honest opinion.......2002-01-03

Certainly the book is overpriced and Andy Lane wears his bias on his sleeve.

On the other hand I concur entirely with the opinions expressed, especially over the hanging plotlines, some of which had been dangling for two and a half years. Moroever, the book at least challenges the official opinion and is a welcome breath of fresh air for that.

                    1 out of 5 stars Synopses good...the rest sux.......2000-10-10

The synopses of the episodes were about all that were good about this book. A few reviews were ok, but most were horribly unfair to B5. Ok, so season 5 wasn't the best and was a little slow in the beginning, but it kept getting better. ANd now that I watch them again, they are even better. This is a serious disservice to B5 and I reccomend wholeheartedly against buying it.

                    3 out of 5 stars Sad.......2000-07-17

I loved The Babylon file, but the second volume was a dissapointment. It's cynical, it gives me the impression that the author hates Babylon 5, it seems to say "This is what I think, and I don't care what you think, because I'm right", and parts are just proven wrong by the episodes. This is not the same quality of writing from the first book.

1 out of 5 stars Hell hath no fury like a bitter fanboy.......1999-12-10

It's okay for anyone not to like something and say so. What's NOT okay is to skew the facts in order to represent your opinion as fact. The book is full of misrepresentations and situations where unrelated events are put together to make them look as if they have something to do with each other. He goes over the so-called he said/she said thing about why Claudia left the show totally ignoring that Claudia came out and SAID IN PRINT THAT SHE QUIT FOR MONEY long before this book was finished. But that's inconvenient for his thesis so he ignores it. Because the fifth season didn't go the way he wanted it to, the way he thought it SHOULD have gone, he turns into a bitter fanboy and spews a tantrum in print, which is a loathsome and despicable thing for any so-called journalist to do. A reviewer should review the show that IS, not the show that HE would have made. As such, this book is entirely worthless and offensive, full of bad information, misinformation, skewed reporting, false premises and bile. An utter waste of time.

                        Book Description

Robert Ariss - activist and academic - had a unique vision of HIV/AIDS. As an HIV seropositive individual for many years before his death on May 9, 1994, he was a full participant in, and critic of, the development of the gay community's response to the HIV epidemic both in Australia and internationally. Though Ariss' life is a definite presence in this study, Against Death: The Practice of Living with AIDS is not an autobiography. Instead, it is a unique and critical account of a public health crisis, a community's response, and the politics of sexuality. It was in Sydney, Australia, world-famous for its Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, that Robert Ariss lived and worked. It is his vision of that community - of its members infected with and affected by HIV - which is documented in this remarkable anthropological study. Yet the study's implications reach beyond Sydney to all communities living with HIV and AIDS.

                        Book Description

Recent controversies in NATO have caused observers to question the Alliance's raison d'tre. They generally contend that NATO's crisis has gone from bad to worse and that the Alliance is ill-adapted to the era of international terrorism, but this assessment is inaccurate. NATO leaders have, in fact, become better at shaping NATO to the strategic environment following a severe crisis in the mid-1990s. At that time, the allies were trying to turn NATO into something it could not be; at present, the allies are on target in their efforts to adapt NATO. NATO Renewed is the story of why NATO's problems are manageable and why the Atlantic Alliance likely will continue to have both power and purpose.

                        Book Description

If Turkey lived up to its potential, it could rule the world - but will it? A passionate report from the front lines

For centuries few terrors were more vivid in the West than fear of "the Turk," and many people still think of Turkey as repressive, wild, and dangerous. Crescent and Star is Stephen Kinzer's compelling report on the truth about this nation of contradictions - poised between Europe and Asia, caught between the glories of its Ottoman past and its hopes for a democratic future, between the dominance of its army and the needs of its civilian citizens, between its secular expectations and its Muslim traditions.

Kinzer vividly describes Turkey's captivating delights as he smokes a water pipe, searches for the ruins of lost civilizations, watches a camel fight, and discovers its greatest poet. But he is also attuned to the political landscape, taking us from Istanbul's elegant cafes to wild mountain outposts on Turkey's eastern borders, while along the way he talks to dissidents and patriots, villagers and cabinet ministers. He reports on political trials and on his own arrest by Turkish soldiers when he was trying to uncover secrets about the army's campaigns against Kurdish guerillas. He explores the nation's hope to join the European Union, the human-rights abuses that have kept it out, and its difficult relations with Kurds, Armenians, and Greeks.

Will this vibrant country, he asks, succeed in becoming a great democratic state? He makes it clear why Turkey is poised to become "the most audacious nation of the twenty-first century."

1 out of 5 stars Talk, talk talkin' sappy talk.......2007-01-28

What would you think of a foreign correspondent in America who wrote about the politics of the 1990s without exploring the influence of Christianity? New York Times correspondent Stephen Kinzer has written about Turkey in the `90s without any effort to take account of Islam.

America is a secular state with a Christian society. Turkey is a secular state with a Muslim society. If the object of your sermon -- "Crescent and Star" is a sermon not an analysis -- is to promote democracy, then Christianity is not too much of a problem. There are Christian democracies. But there are not any Muslim democracies, and it must be asked, is that a consequence or an accident?

Kinzer doesn't ask. He spends chapter after chapter on the Kurds, victims of a genocide in the `90s that most of the world chose not to see. Some pages on women, a few on economics. Several chapters on the army, which runs the country as a disguised military dictatorship. Page after page about the ineffectual political system and corrupt parties.

Kinzer is capable of breathtakingly stupid writing. My favorite example is his description of the father of the republic, Kemal Ataturk: "Ataturk and his comrades came to think of themselves as righteous crusaders." I doubt any Turk ever thought of himself as any kind of crusader.

Without providing the slightest evidence, Kinzer opines: "Many devout Muslims . . . want to cooperate with secularists in building an open, tolerant nation." But the only political act tied to Islam in the book describes how Turkish Hezballah (Party of Allah) subjected Konca Kuris, a Muslim woman "who had written many articles describing Islam as a gentle, tolerant faith that demanded equality for women" to "unspeakable tortures," which they videotaped for the enjoyment and political/religious edification of Turkish Muslims.

"Crescent and Star" was finished shortly before Sept. 11, 2001, but even then anyone with eyes could see that tolerant Islam was losing ground. Even then, the secular, corrupt political establishment had made a bargain with expansionist Muslims (the Welfare Party) to bring them into the government. Readers of historical experience are likely to be reminded of how the conservatives in Germany thought they could tame Hitlerism by bringing it into the government.

Turkey would be another Iran now if the secular army had not stepped in to force the Welfarist prime minister Erbakan out. Kinzer gets half of it, writing that "the worst legacy of Erbakan's disastrous year in power was that it convinced the army that Turks were still not ready for democracy."

But having just stated that Turks were unable to handle democracy, Kinzer also says Turks are "a people who are quite mature enough to deal with the challenge of freedom."

Kinzer adores Turkey and Turkishness. It is not clear whether he is blinded by love or just a silly twit.

This is a very interesting book, which should be read by anyone who is interested in Turkish culture. However, it gives a very narrow view of this culture and the political situation. Kinzer does a very good job of presenting what is happening in Turkey, but his endless preaching does get a little old. Other than that, I truely enjoyed this book.

Kinzer's book provides some excellent insight into the modern world of Turkey in addition to some fun mezes into Turkish culture. His review of the country is in-depth and his perspective is enhanced by actually talking with locals on the street. Here's a man who loves the Turks and wants the best for them.

Turkey is poised between Europe & Asia, caught between the glories of its Ottoman past & its hopes for a democratic future, between the traditional power of its army & the needs of its impatient citizens, between Muslim traditions & secular expectations. Text includes physical description, mating, nesting and fledging behaviors, and especially in what type of domain to seek each species.

5 out of 5 stars Great bird guide addition.......2003-12-13

I think this book is a great book for birders. It helped me learn birds by where I was (habitat), where in the past I had no real way of having core knowledge to build on for what birds I would see based on what type of habitat I was in (I'm not an expert birder). I've never seen another field guide done this way and I think it's a great way to catagorize birds.

The pictures are great and the stories along with the identification info make this book a good read. I really enjoyed the Raven and Wolf story.

I recommend birders add this book to their collection.

This book has helped me a great deal. The species accounts are very informative. The photography is beautiful. I think this would be great for both new and experienced birds who live in or plan on visited the Rockies.
