Book Description
Did you know Korea is a mountainous peninsula about the size of Utah? This country's project is a jeweled crown. The Gryphon House book . . . let my daughter and me learn about crafts from parts of the world where we have relatives and friends. We can make a fiesta dancing hat like those worn to celebrate the planting season of Ecuador (where my friend Lora served in the Peace Corps.) and paint our faces like the Kathakali performers in India (where my brother-in-law is from). It's global fun.-Port Arthur News, Texas
". . . a wonderful compendium of plans for everything from an Ecuadorian dancing hat to Greek bread dough coins. Authors MaryAnn F. Kohl and Jean Potter give one-page instructions for more than 135 projects that are thought provoking and amusing. The illustrations offer a map showing the geographic location of each project's source, as well as what the finished item can look like. The authors toss in a valuable historical or anecdotal tidbit just to make Mom or Dad or the Babysitter look that much smarter. Betcha didn't know that evidence of ice skating was found among Roman ruins in London or that an Austrian wedding calls for a specially painted chair. Now you do, and here's a project to prove it!'-West Coast Weekend
"Everyday art for children is presented in a project title which gathers a range of multicultural art pursuits, from Peruvian Silver Wind Chimes to creating Chinese Printing Presses. Illustrations are in black and white but this project-packed guide needs little color to prove valuable to young audiences."-Wisconsin Bookwatch

Not A Mention Of Islamic-Arabic Art? Wow Sombody's Biased.......2003-06-28
The Global Art book barely mentions an Iraqi and Iranian piece of art however it chooses to limit the children's scope from Islamic art. I view this as another biased piece of work that is keen on dividing the world rather than a simple tool for educating children about the world or so called "GLOBAL ART".
Global Art.......2002-02-22
A very resourful book. The authors misspell Colombia.
Love those Kohl books........2000-06-12
I enjoy all of MaryAnn F. Kohl's books, and this one is a little different than her others as it has a bit more in the way of finished products, though they are all arrived at by discovering and creating. Still, this book works well for those older kids who want a little more "fact" in their art. My favorite chapter revolves around Asian projects, in particular those from Japan.
Kids Love to be Fascinated.......2000-06-09
Thanks for the help! My kids love to be fascinated, as do all kids, and this book makes it easy. I love how the chapters are organized by continents, and how the projects are not so much copying crafts from different countries, but actually incorporate history and inventions and all kinds of things from different countries into simple, easy to do art projects. The chapter on Antarctica is a kick! It's all projects about snow and ice and white paint. My kids love it! Works for all ages, too, from preschool through about age twelve I would think.

Editing videotape, once upon a time, was outside the range of what home movie buffs could hope to do. Short of buying expensive equipment, your only choice was to queue tape in your camcorder as you recorded segments on a VCR in the sequence you wanted. Now that iMovie 2 is around, Macintosh users have a much better option. iMovie 2 for Dummies explains how late-model Mac, iMac, and iBook computer users can download video from their camcorders to their computers via a FireWire multimedia link, then edit the raw footage for remarkably professional results. Todd Stauffer is a longtime Mac writer, and, in this book, he communicates the fun of making movies on the Mac.
As you would expect, iMovie 2 for Dummies does a super job of explaining how to accomplish tasks in the iMovie 2 environment--look for precise directions on adding titles, overlaying narration, chopping up audio clips, and doing all the other technical work associated with assembling a movie. The Dummies format emphasizes text descriptions of what to do over the illustrations in the Visual QuickStart Guide series--both approaches are effective. Experienced moviemakers will appreciate the discussion of the iMovie interface; novices will like the ideas about how to make movies more appealing and technically clean. --David Wall
Topics covered:
- The iMovie 2 editing program for digital video on computers running Mac OS
- Importing video
- Editing
- Transitions
- Audio

Book Description
For the first time, making and editing your own movies is as easy as plugging in your camera, turning on your iMac and double-clicking the iMovie icon. What the iMac did for Internet access iMovie will do for video editing. iMovie for Dummies not only shows you the ins and outs of using iMovie, it also shows you the techniques and tricks to making professional-looking video. Storyboards, effects, titles, sound, music, manipulating tracks -- these authors cover it all in an engaging and entertaining fashion that will make learning to make movies as much fun as watching them!
Customer Reviews:
Includes a good CD demo.......2001-11-22
I have two other iMovie2 books, but I put out the money for this one because not only does it contains quite a few other techniques not found in other books, but because the attached CD comes only with sample movie clips of camera and editing techniques discussed in the book. It also includes among other things shareware and demo software like Adobe After Effects, sound effect utilities, graphic converter, MoviEffects to use with QT movies.
I wouldn't say this is the best iMovie2 book, but the author does a good job outlining, laying out, and explaining editing procedures and techniques. It's not that iMovie2 is a difficult program to learn or use, but it's just that books like these provide insightful strategies that enable you to get more out of the program. I certaintly recommend this book for first time and intermediate users of iMovie2.
I like it.......2001-07-24
I like the way the book is written and it's style. It is informative and comprehensive and details the commands and all the operation from installation to making your movies. Covers all the features and much more including getting edtra plugins, movie management, memory issues and much more. The only part I though confusing is the wording in the section on cropping your movie. Very misleading these operations don't seem to , in part , work the way the books says. While the book has good instructions and visuals, I wished it would have included more screen shots and possibly highlight the commands it mentions in the visuals through arrows or something. I also wished the book covered about doing and creating movies longer then a few minutes. It covers movies but does not say anything about movies of any length other then more you make the nmore room it takes up. I like it . If you have imovie you will find it useful.

Perfect for any graduate.......2003-05-28
I thought this was a perfect graduation gift, particularly for a college graduate. You can't tell them anything and even if you do they usually either won't listen or they assume they already know it all. At least this ads a humorous twist to reality. I plan to order several more for next year's round of graduations.
Cute book.....but really not something I could use........2000-07-02
This book is a blank book that doesn't really fit the "blank book" criteria of a hardcover, journal-like book. It might be useful to write down information in and pass it along to the next graduate, in hopes to have the tradition carried on.

Book Description
This complete history of the band includes a comprehensive discography, pictures and cover art, and details of where the band members played before Metallica, and where they have since.
Customer Reviews:
Needs to be Updated.......2004-12-09
When this book originally came out several years ago, it was a pretty handy and interesting guide to the world of collecting Metallica CDs, Vinyl, Cassettes and Promo only items. To anyone not a collector, the book probably wouldn't hold much interest, even though there is a brief historical timeline to major events in the life of Metallica at the start of the book. The family tree of the various bands that members were once in towards the end of the book goes into a little more detail than some other books I've read, as those tend to usually gloss over the pre-Metallica bands, so it's nice to have. The demos and cover songs section is decent too, although it's missing a few items and lacks details for some. Also included is a radio interview CD.
The main problems with the book are mostly due to the format. It's understandable with the sheer number of bootlegs out there, that the author can't really do more than give them a passing mention (they'd be a book unto themselves). But any type of listing that tries to encompass everything that a (still) recording artist does is going to get stale pretty fast -- as new releases come and never before discovered versions of the albums and singles come to light. This type of listing is really better suited to the internet, which since the time the book was published, everybody and their grandmother has access to. There are several excellent sites that cover this material (the author has one himself) and is really the proper way to pass on this type of info. The book is also marred by some egregious typos and poorly reproduced scans that make the book look cheap (in quality, not price), which is too bad because this the only place to get a lot of this info in book form.
Metallica Collectors Must Have.......2002-09-12
I bought this book buy mistake. I am really glad I did, It is a Metallica collectors must have. If you are a collector of anything Metallica, from rare vinyl, vinyl singles, cd's, cd singles, bootlegs, videos, promo's, cassettes, fan cans etc.... This guide gives you information on every Metallica release from every country. Mostly black and white it has a color section in the middle. Also comes with a interview cd. The author also provides his web address, he has a great website also. Get this one before its gone, you won't regret it.
The complete cataloge of Metallica.......1999-10-26
This book is the most detailed Metallica book I have ever seen. It should be and there are so many items in the book not only the text but with tons of pictures so you know what to look for. Do yourself a favour and buy this book. I call it the bible for Metallica fans.
A must for _all_ MetallicA fans!.......1999-06-20
This book's got everything a die-hard Metallica fan could ask for. I just finished reading it and I couldn't put it down. Normally, I don't read anything, but this being the best book about the best band in the world, I never stopped until the end. Complete history, all the songs played over the years, whatever you wanna know about the band, you'll find it here. If you've never read this book, you're not a full-fledged Metallica fan. Great job, Sem!
Wow!.......1999-03-24
Just when you thought you had a good little collection going, some guy from Norway goes and makes a book that makes you realize that you really don't have much! Ouch!!! This is an excellent book for the serious collector, Sem did an awesome job (like big surprise, right). Whether you think you have it all or you are just getting started into collecting "Metallica," you need this book!

This research study explores White and African American television viewers' parasocial interaction relationships with White and African American situation comedy characters. Parasocial interaction was first introduced by Donald Horton and Richard Wohl (1956) and became known as a one-sided friendship television viewers have with a mass media character. Even though the one-way friendships are based on vicarious interaction via television rather than actual social interaction, viewers feel they really know the media character. Using a total sample of 332 White and African American participants from the University of Kentucky (Lexington) and Tougaloo College in (Jackson) Mississippi, the study sought to determine whether the participants would engage in stronger parasocial interaction relationships with same-race characters. All of the participants were exposed to an edited version of a prime-time situation comedy that contained White and African American characters and asked to complete a post-viewing survey. The survey contains scales measuring respondents' parasocial interaction, involvement and identification with the television characters (Audience-Persona Interaction (API) Scale), in addition to perceived realism and affinity for television dimensions. General television viewing items and demographic questions are also included. Factorial analysis of variance with repeated measures, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression were used to analyze the data.

Customer Reviews:
Ben Arnold.......2005-11-23
For an adventurous man who heard often "the call of the frontier" and responded accordingly, Ben Arnold's life is not that far out of the ordinary, though still remarkable. Apparently as an old man living in Pierre, SD, his daughter became interested in his stories and exploits as he related them to her, and she decided to write them down in notebooks. After his death in 1922, she worked on her notebooks and then took them to Lewis Crawford, head of the State Historical Society of North Dakota. He got them ready for publication. He decided to relate Arnold's story using the first person narrator - a good decision as it makes Arnold's accounts more immediate and personal.
Arnold relates nothing about his childhood, but begins with his soldiering in the Civil War. Three times he enlisted in Ohio regiments, deserting each time, the third time for good after getting into a feud with a fellow soldier near present-day Casper, WY. He headed west to Fort Hall in Idaho, where he operated a ferry (ferryman was a recurring occupation during Arnold's life). It was around this time that he changed his name to Ben Arnold (he was born Benjamin M. Connor).
The wanderlust bug struck and he drifted to Virginia City, where he did some mining, then bull-whacked around Fort Benton before going to Fort Union in North Dakota. Over the course of the next decade he was at Ft. Laramie, all over Nebraska, and was with Crook in his campaign against the Sioux as a dispatch rider, most notably at the Rosebud fight. Later he was a buffalo hunter in South Dakota and also homesteaded there. He died in Pierre in 1922.
The tone of the book is very matter-of-fact and to the point. Arnold was not a reflective man, apparently, for little of that is part of the book. Thus he is able to say, "A railroad was under construction [and] one of the engineers told me of a place where there would be a town; if I desired I could file on land within the proposed townsite. But I did not file. The town is now Douglas, Wyoming." That's that, no sorrow, no regrets.
The narrative stops about 20 years before his death because after that time he says "my experiences have not been unusual and are too common to be interesting." Perhaps. But what he's told us before, though not of the "I-fought-with-Custer" heroics, is definitely of interest. He was an adventurer in a land that was just beginning to be settled, a land that through his own exploits he would help create and define. The only wish I had while reading the book was for a modern editor, one who could annotate and explain further some things that Arnold tells about (Crawford attempts this in places, but not often, and gets some things wrong: Bovine, SD, a town Arnold founded, did not become present-day Capa but Van Metre.) But that's a minor quibble; I really enjoyed the book a lot. Highly recommended.
Book Description
Geography
On the 25th anniversary of its publication, a new edition of this foundational work on human geography.
In the twenty years since its original publication, Space and Place has not only established the discipline of human geography, but it has proven influential in such diverse fields as theatre, literature, anthropology, psychology, and theology. Eminent geographer Yi-Fu Tuan considers the ways in which people feel and think about space, how they form attachments to home, neighborhood, and nation, and how feelings about space and place are affected by the sense of time. He suggests that place is security and space is freedom: we are attached to the one and long for the other. Whether he is considering sacred versus "biased" space, mythical space and place, time in experiential space, or cultural attachments to space, Tuan's analysis is thoughtful and insightful throughout.
Until retiring in 1998, Yi-Fu Tuan was a professor of geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is ranked among the country's most distinguished cultural geographers and has earned numerous honors, among them a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Bracken Award for landscape architecture, and an award for meritorious contribution to geography from the Association of American Geographers. He was recently named the Lauréat d'Honneur 2000 of the International Geographers Union. He is the author of many essays and books, including Escapism (1998) and Cosmos and Hearth (Minnesota, 1999).
Customer Reviews:
'to increase the burden of awareness'.......2007-01-09
This is a seminal text which offers insight into how we are awakened as children to the complex world which exists around, how we navigate, read and atribute meaning to the abstract spaces and places within which we exist. It opens a door to the genetic knowledge which is embedded in everything which exists around and how through our senses even the preception of time and space can be warped by experience.
"The aspects of things that are
most important for us are hidden
because of their simplicity and
familiarity"
L. Wittgenstein
As a thesis [here I stand] it is a delight, fundamental and engaging. It illuminates a wide and fertile field critical to an understanding how we are rooted to place and space.
There are books you read, then there are those which - live with you - you keep them close and consult them often.
The phenomenology of space and place.......2006-06-05
In "Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience," Tuan provides a descriptive account of the concepts "space" and "place," drawing on the work of phenomenologists, anthropologists, psychologists, geographers, and others. He grounds his analysis in a structuralist framework, using anthropological research to illustrate how our experiences of space and place can "transcend cultural particularities" (Tuan 1977, p. 5). Tuan provides an original and intriguing discussion of a wide range of topics, such as the relationship between space and place, on the one hand, and myths, architecture, time, religion, and cognition, on the other. I would highly recommend this work to anyone interested in human geography, cultural geography, urban geography, urban studies, and to anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of the importance of space and place for our lives.
The Importance of Meaning in Architecture.......2000-09-12
This book was one of several books I studied to better understand the role of place in architecture and interior design. It helped me understand the importance of working with clients to understand the meanings they infer from the environment around them. In the book, Tuan highlights the importance of meaning and an insider's view. He describes place as humanized space. The contrast of open space with enclosed, comforting areas enhances both. As a person's emotional bond to a space increases, so do familiarity, comfort, and the sense of insideness. Without personal control over space, this emotional bond is slow to develop. To create place, Tuan suggests that memorable architecture should strenghen our memories, enhance the self, and provide layers of meaning to a space.

almost perfect.......2002-02-01
This book was very helpful when identifying birds of Hong Kong. The color photographs of each bird were clear and extremely helpful, and the descriptions helped me distinguish similar species if I was still in doubt after seeing the picture. The range maps seem accurate, and the book's small size makes it very portable and convenient to carry. The only drawback was that several species I saw, some fairly commonly, were not listed or pictured, so I was unable to identify them at the time. Overall, I would recommend this book for someone wanting to identify Hong Kong birds.
