A wonderful overview........2002-08-05

This is a very nice looking book that not only provides context about the Harlem Renaissance and the proliferation of Black artists during the 20's and 30's, but it also includes many reproductions of some of the period's most representative works. From the cover photo which is a copy William Johnson's "Boy in a Vest," to the James VanDerZee's striking black and white photography, to the sculptures of Meta Warwick, the reader is treated to many examples of the visual arts. There are also essays and poems by the Countee Cullen and other writers of the time. This is a good introduction to the period and is suitable for children and young adults. And old adults too for that matter!

This is a great book for someone interested in learning about the Harlem Renaissance. The author presents vital information in an accessible way, and illustrates the diversity and complexity that is American Art.

An Intimate Look........2000-04-05

This book illustrates the daily life of Harlem in the 1920's and 1930's. It gives the reader an examined persective of what it was like to be part of a community struggling to be heard. The photos of the funeral processions were especially heart grabbing! When this exhibit first showed at the Metropoliton Musuem it caused a great controversy. Many of the leaders of civil rights movement thought the photos were displaying black people as subjects not art. There were massive demostrations outside the museum to have it close. Many of the photos are still part of the museum's collection although they are not on display. this book offers great insight into the life of Harlem Renaissance. I also recommend, The Sleeper Wakes Edited by Marcy Knopf and A Renaissance in Harlem by Lionel C Bascom.These books offer additional information on what life was like during the New Negro Movement. A valuable art history lesson for us all.

African-American Concert Dance significantly advances the study of pioneering black dancers by providing valuable biographical and historical information on a group of artists who worked during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s to legitimize black dance as a serious art form. John O. Perpener sets these seminal artists and their innovations in the contexts of African-American culture and American modern dance and explores their creative synthesis of material from European-American, African-American, Caribbean, and African sources.

Perpener begins with Hemsley Winfield, a versatile performer and director whose company, the New Negro Art Theatre, launched the careers of Edna Guy, Randolph Sawyer, and Ollie Burgoyne, among many others. Also profiled are Charles Williams, who directed the Hampton Creative Dance Group at the Hampton Institute in Virginia, and Asadata Dafora Horton, a native African who established himself as the preeminent purveyor of African dance and culture in America during the 1930s. Dafora's African Dance Troupe, which at one point came under the umbrella of the WPA Federal Theatre Project, was a focal point of the famous "voodoo" Macbeth, an all-black production set in Haiti and directed by the young Orson Welles.

Stepping onto the path cleared by these early innovators, two important artists combined dance with anthropology to expand the reach and scope of African-American dance. Katherine Dunham and Pearl Primus both studied anthropology and engaged in extensive fieldwork that infused their dances with Caribbean and African influences. Dunham founded two ambitious training schools, one in New York and one in East St. Louis, while Primus's projects included an African Arts Center in Monrovia, Liberia, dedicated to collecting dance material, teaching, and organizing professional performances.

Perpener examines the politics of racial and cultural difference and their impact on these early African-American dance leaders. In particular he documents the critical reception of their work, detailing the rigid preconceptions of African-American dance that white critics imposed on black artists. He also surveys important black dancers and choreographers since 1950, including Talley Beatty, Donald McKayle, Alvin Ailey, Eleo Pomare, Rod Rodgers, and Dianne McIntyre, and discusses how they have extended and diverged from traditions established by their predecessors.

'King's in Conflict' or 'War of the Two Kings'.......2000-02-13

You've wondered about the roots of all the fighting in Ulster, the gombeen drums and Orangemen? Well, this book will explain why the war of succession in England spilled over to and was fought in Ireland in the late 1600's.

Rather than being a dry history, it also discusses much of the intrigue, propaganda, greed and malarky happening at the time.

A brief Prelude:

By the time of this story, the Plantagenants were out of power. Old Henry VIII, not allowed divorce, essentially told the pope and the catholic church to shove it and started the Church of England. His daughter, 'Bloody' Mary, a catholic, bloodily murdered many protestant people in her quest for religious purity and a 'return to the one true faith'. His other daughter, Elizabeth, as shrewd as her father and also a protestant, succeeded Mary and later planted Ulster, evicting northern Irish people to the bogs. Elizabeth had an eye on the oak forests to provide wood for her ships. Cromwell came along in the mid 1600's, warred on Ireland and paid his army off with Irish land. The Duke of York, later 'James II', a catholic, became King of England on Feb 1685. Of course, the English Whigs and Tories didn't like James II's policies, so they looked back into their genealogies until they found a 'proper' protestant descendant in the person of William of Orange, and invited him over to be king of England in June 1688.

The 'fun' really begins when you understand that James II is the father-in-law of William. A classic disfunctional family.

December 1688; James had escaped to France. By 1689, the Irish were more than ready to back anyone who would guarantee them the removal of the English yoke. He used the willing Irish and others as his backers, known as 'Jacobites' and met William in battle in Ireland.

The Irish army backing James fought valiantly in many battles; Athlone, Limerick, Boyne, etc. until the Treaty of Limerick was signed in 1691.

The 'Jacobite' Irish Army followed Patrick Sarsfield in exile to France, to become known to history as the 'Wild Geese'.

The book doesn't stop at the Treaty. It also covers the intrigues and wars with France and the Spanish Succession.

Yes folks, Some of Europes bloodiest battles are those fought amongst relatives.

The reason I'm interested in this history is that my g-g-g-grandfather was one of those Wild Geese.
