Book Description

Curvaceous women, a top subject sought by comic book publishers, are the focus of this eye-popping instructional that shows aspiring cartoonists exactly how to master drawing a bevy of fabulous females.

From basic anatomy, musculature, body positions, and action poses to facial expressions, hairstyles, and costumes, this truly invaluable and unique resource covers in great detail every aspect of depicting great-looking women for comic books.

The book also shows how to handle perspective and compose art specifically for comic book panels. In addition to chapters offering effective drawing lessons are sections on tricks of the trade, lists of comic book publishers and their submissions addresses, and interviews with industry professionals Bobby Chase of Marvel Comics and Renae Geerlings of Top Cow, who provide insiders' views of the business and give tips on how newcomers can land their first jobs in the field. Contributing illustrators have penciled and inked such famous characters as the X-Men, Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Catwoman, Supergirl, Green Lantern, Captain America, and many others.

Think of all of the good books out on the market that you could buy! Flip through this book once or twice and you'll learn all there is to learn...from this book. There's so much out there about drawing women that this book just doesn't cover anything. Well it covers a lot of the same things his previous books cover, but that's about it. By the way, if you're going to learn to draw comics professionally, learn to draw comics from professionals, not from people that would do well to take a class on "The Basics of Comic Book Artistry 101" I will say, though, it's not all Christopher Hart's fault. Most of the schools across America are lacking in comic book art instruction. Still, If you don't know what you're doing, don't tell anyone else how to do it!

3 out of 5 stars not for beginners.......2006-05-16

this book is an OK book, but it's not for beginners. the only thing this book does is give you ideas for what to draw not how to draw them. Christopher Hart shows some basics in the beginning but not enough for the first time artist. so if you are an experienced artist then this may be a good book for you but if you need a book on learning the basics, don't bother getting this one. and either way, you shouldn't buy this book brand new, buy it used instead, because it's not worth alot of money.

2 out of 5 stars Poor anatomy.......2005-08-29

There's no way this is good anatomy, just get any Marvel or DC comic from your bookshelf and you will notice the huge difference. the bodies are just weird looking. Sorry.

1 out of 5 stars Oh my! The anatomy is HORRIBLE!.......2003-12-03

This book "takes art to a whole new level?" What?! The artist's understanding of human anatomy and correct proportion is ghastly. Torsos are weirdly lengthened or turned out-of-porportion to the rest of the body, chests are almost humorous, arms spout from upper bodies like mismatched attachments, and buttocks hang like onions in underpants. Faces are so generic they're interchangeable, except with variations on hairstyle. Apparently "great looking comic book women" are stereotypes that vary only in their decorative objectification: change the costume and the hair, and everything else is assembly-line rendered. Even the bare basics of human life drawing are absent in the book. The step-by-step processes aren't innovative, and are shown with MUCH better results in "real" art books. This is for guys who want to scratch out semi-bizarre "babes" and not realize how goofy the creations actually look. Sorry to be harsh, but MAN, this anatomy is poor.

5 out of 5 stars Takes drawing to a whole new level..........2002-03-16

I love the Hart books because they seem to be an extention of the book "How to draw Comics the Marvel Way"..I think this guy must have read Marvel Comics and is showing us how he draws those Super Hero Women..It's covers everything from how to pose to how to place the figue on the page and making scenes look dramatic. As a cartoonist I have to say I will borrow heavily on his illustrations for reference and guidance.

                      Book Description

Bill Hess —a noted photographer — began his association with the Inupiat Eskimos in 1982. Eventually, he got permission to accompany them on their historic whale hunt. This book is his record, in sensitive text and almost 200 stark images, of what he experienced. Hess explores Inupiat history and traditions juxtaposed against contemporary life, never shying away from the controversial aspects of this ancient trek. Gift of the Whale is a rare contribution to Native history.

5 out of 5 stars A Frank and Beautiful View of Inupiat Subsistence Lifestyle.......2005-09-04

Bill Hess as created a masterpiece. His grainy and moody black and white capture the bowhead hunt, Point Lay beluga hunts and Inupiat life in respectfully frank perfection. The book contains several stories that are threaded in and out of the Inupiat Bowhead hunts and gives a good look into the subsistence lifestyle of the Eskimos who live on the edge of the Arctic ocean.

Hess' journalistic writing style is easy to read and appreciate. He was able to get a close-up view on many things most will never have a chance to see from subsistence hunts, search and rescue missions and the 1990's attempt to free three ice-trapped gray whales which had captured the medias attention. It was interesting how different the story that reached us was compared to the situation and conclusion was on the ice.

If you have interest in whale hunting or Eskimo lifestyles, get this book. It is a great visual and prose look into this arctic world.

                      5 out of 5 stars Insightful & honest.......2002-10-22

Bill Hess is a very gifted photographer, who works almost exclusively in black and white. He has spent a great deal of time with the people the people of the North Slope whose lives are shared in this book. For a number of years he was under contract to the North Slope Borough to produce a magazine about life on the North Slope (Uinniq-The Open Lead, which makes it clear that the people of the North Slope felt that he represents them clearly and fairly.

One could enjoy this book for the photography alone, but it is so much more than that. Whaling is a central focus of North Slope Inupiat culture; it is an inextricable part. People here know that; and the whalers carry it out as a sacred trust on behalf of the whole community.

                      5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2000-06-14

This is a stunning visual presentation combined with a moving, unpretentious text. The drama of the three grey whales, the search for footprints . . . it is all powerful stuff. I have only been living in Barrow for nine months but so far there isn't a word that doesn't ring true.

                      5 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding!.......2000-01-31

I have done a great deal of reading in my life, yet never have I been more absorbed in a book than I have in 'Gift of the Whale'. I highly recommend this elegant, enjoyable and informative piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Bill Hess Portrays the Reality of Arctic Life and Whaling.......1999-12-19

This book is a milestone among recent publications on Alaska because it portrays Alaska's Native people in an unvarnished and realistic way. This is NOT a commercial "coffee table book" or a series of pretty pictures suitable for note cards. A short story, hopefully, will illustrate my point.

When I was living in Barrow in the late 1980s, the mayor asked me to meet with a visiting photographer who had requested information on traditional whale hunting (I was a staff anthropologist at the time). The Anchorage photographer [NOT Bill Hess] wanted to "reconstruct" a whale hunt. This commercial photographer pleaded to have me call him in Anchorage next time a whale was harpooned so he could catch the next plane to Barrow (he had already talked the airline into sponsoring him). He promised that he would stage the photograph to show the local people in the best possible light and make them appreciated by all the tourists who come to Alaska.

After nearly throwing up, I politely told him that the Inupiat whale hunters were quite capable of taking care of themselves and did not need to be "airbrushed" and marketed for popular consumption.

Then I met Bill Hess. I immediately connected with his visceral understanding of Inupiat culture which he communicates so elegantly in words and photos in this book "Gift of the Whale." This book communicates a vision of contemporary Inupiat life that is unvarnished and somewhat raw; but - from my firsthand experience - authentic.

Bill Hess knows what it's like to sweat while breaking a sled trail through jumbled ice floes at 20 below. He earned his unique chance to communicate the symbiotic relationship between Inupiat hunters and the bowhead whale. This book takes the reader out onto the Arctic Ocean (in both its frozen and liquid state) and into the skin boats, skiffs, snowmachines and tents of crews who provide their families with life-giving food. The real stories (illustrated with stunning duotone photos of the people and the animals that are simultaneously revered and killed for survival) are more interesting and insightful than any pseudo-reality a market-driven journalist could create.

Bill Hess, through his photos and stories in this book, communicates how Inupiat culture continues to focus on the communal hunting and sharing of food for survival. This book communicates in vivid detail how impractical contemporary Western values of individual ego-driven materialism are when it's 20 below zero with the snow blowing sideways, and a fellow hunter is lost on the tundra. Bill illustrates how Inupiat society is built on respect and reverence for the resources and each other, keys to long-term survival in the Arctic. This book provides a visual banquet allowing the reader to enjoy and appreciate contemporary Inupiat whaling, life, and culture.

This little book is positively bursting with such fun facts, as well as farting etiquette tips, helpful translations for foreign farting, funny fart jokes and quotes, and a list of more than 75 euphemisms for cutting the cheese! No wonder it's sold nearly 100,000 copies in the U.K. in less than two years. 5 out of 5 stars Clears The Air On A Smelly Subject.......2005-01-02

This is a rather informative book on the unlikely subject of flatus. I was fortunate enough to receive this gem as a gift, and must confess that despite a degree in Biology, there are facts about flatulence in this tiny book I had not previously realized.

The book contains the basics of gas production, assigns labels to individual techniques for releasing it, provides a useful thesaurus for gas-related euphemisms (i.e. "step on a duck"), and quotations on the subject from a variety of famous individuals from Hippocrates to Lyndon Johnson. A typical example is this nugget from Benjamin Franklin: "What comfort can the vortices of Descartes give to a man who has whirlwinds in his bowels?" There is a slightly less acceptable section on flatus jokes (almost never funny), but that is more that compensated for by the phrasebook for several foreign languages including Afrikaans, illustrated by this example: "Ek het te veel blomkool geeet" (I've eaten too much cabbage.)

I have to hand it to Alec Bromcie; he has illuminated the sulfurous art of maldigested complex-carbohydrate byproduct expulsion in an entertaining little book. I give him five stars for willingness to pursue this fetid subject when anybody else would have turned up their nose and retreated.

The definitive history of Seattle music from the '60s to the mid '90s, and the ultimate 227 page 'zine for the scene slathered with interviews, photographs, concert posters, and insider reportage from someone who was there the (w)hole time. Having been in a parade of Seattle bands over the last seven years, I can attest to the accuracy and encyclopedic coverage of the names and places, and the description of the entire "practice space/gig/party/wander-around-aimlessly- dumpster-diving/ crash/wake-up-for-a-latte" lifestyle. Of course, there are some omissions (for example, my all-time favorite Seattle band, The Tone Dogs, is barely mentioned), but none of the losers east of the 520 Bridge or west of the OK Hotel would notice. If you get this book, you should definitely consider snagging Screaming Life, a collection of the best of Charles Peterson's black-and-white photographs of Nirvana, Screaming Trees, Hole, Soundgarden, and friends.

                          Book Description

The interconnected origins and spectacular rise of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Hole, Screaming Trees, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, the Posies, Tad, the Young Fresh Fellows, the Presidents of the United States of America, and all the other stars of the early-'90s Seattle music scene. How a subculture of self-proclaimed 'losers' became the darlings of the music world, only to be tossed aside by the industry like an old grungy shirt. Now with even more pictures (almost 1,000) and stories, an updated discography, and many "whatever became of..." listings.

4 out of 5 stars Great descriptive account of the scene.......2005-07-13

I'm confused about reviews that claim it's "not about the grundge scene (sic)" because the book is not supposed to be ABOUT grunge. However, the book does cover many to most of the local bands during the early 90s and of course references the ones that "made it," although you'll do better elsewhere for material on Nirvana, Mudhoney, etc. But the book is chock full of material on a huge number of bands--perhaps too many, because some of them fly by pretty quickly. Not much cultural analysis, but plenty of little insights about individuals, venues, etc. The book is strongest post-1975, especially post-1985.

                          5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2003-07-18

This book is definitive--a witty, thorough, often brilliant history of Seattle rock from its beginnings. It is not only the best book about the Seattle scene, it is one of the best books ever written about rock.

This book is okay if you want to learn about Seattle history. Me? I couldn't care less, I wanted to learn about the bands that came out of Seattle in the 90's not about who founded the town of Seattle!!

While there is plenty of interesting info on many Seattle bands, this book does NOT accurately document the real Seattle music scene. As an active full-time musician in the Seattle-area music scene for over 20 years, this book tends to reflect the attitude of the ROCKET magazine, a now defunct Seattle-area music periodical, which selectively covered only a tiny fraction which turned out to be more-or-less favorite bands of the staff.
I would NOT recommend this book if you are interested what actually went on in the Seattle music scene.

                                      Book Description

Parity and War is an impressive explanation of why peace predominates in the international arena and why, on occasion, wars do start. Useful for college students and scholars alike, the work scrutinzes and tests ideas about power preponderance, first discussed over a decade ago in the widely acclaimed book The War Ledger.
An alternative to traditional realism, power preponderence contends that peace is preserved when a preponderant nation supports the status quo. The theory convincingly accounts for war initiation, recovery, and peace by analyzing military arms buildups, alliances, territorial threats, economic cycles, and nuclear environment deterrence and proliferation. The contributors to this volume examine and analyze cases as diverse as the peaceful collapse of the Soviet Union, the presence of interstate war in South America in the last century and the absence thereof--despite domestic war--in this century, the economic and political consequences of the American Civil War, and the observation of long-term patterns of conflict and peace in international relations.
Moreover, contributors to Parity and War utilize game theory, expected utility, and differential calculus techniques to model major war and to formalize the originally intuitive propositions of power preponderance. Their timely research shows that, in this era of nuclear weapons dominated by a single super power, effective regime guidance by the United States can insure peace for the next century.

                                        Book Description

The War Ledger provides fresh, sophisticated answers to fundamental questions about major modern wars: Why do major wars begin? What accounts for victory or defeat in war? How do victory and defeat influence the recovery of the combatants? Are the rules governing conflict behavior between nations the same since the advent of the nuclear era?

The authors find such well-known theories as the balance of power and collective security systems inadequate to explain how conflict erupts in the international system. Their rigorous empirical analysis proves that the power-transition theory, hinging on economic, social, and political growth, is more accurate; it is the differential rate of growth of the two most powerful nations in the system—the dominant nation and the challenger—that destabilizes all members and precipitates world wars.

Predictions of who will win or lose a war, the authors find, depend not only on the power potential of a nation but on the capability of its political systems to mobilize its resources—the "political capacity indicator." After examining the aftermath of major conflicts, the authors identify national growth as the determining factor in a nation's recovery. With victory, national capabilities may increase or decrease; with defeat, losses can be enormous. Unexpectedly, however, in less than two decades, losers make up for their losses and all combatants find themselves where they would have been had no war occurred.

Finally, the authors address the question of nuclear arsenals. They find that these arsenals do not make the difference that is usually assumed. Nuclear weapons have not changed the structure of power on which international politics rests. Nor does the behavior of participants in nuclear confrontation meet the expectations set out in deterrence theory.

If I could give this more STARS I would. Anyone interested in researching the Lakota society should consult this book. This book contains a census in ledger form of Indian tribes (Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho) residing at the Red Cloud Agency towards the end of the Sioux War. It is exciting to see the followers of Crazy Horse identified. What makes this book truly unique is that it is not an abstract of the ledger... it is a page-by-page photograph of the ledger -- as written in the 1870's (in good handwriting too!). So you don't have to rely on someone else's interpretation of the names. I only wish more books of this kind were published this way! The Ledger format consists of: Arraprahoes, Cheyennes, Young Man Afraid of Horses, American Horses, Red Cloud, Red Leaf, Yellow Bear, Little Wound, Departures, Arrivals from the North, Transfers to Spotted Tail, Indians from Spotted Tail on Passes, and Crazy Horse. Also included are Beef Records, Ration Tickets, etc., as well as a historical introduction (nicely documented). This book has enabled me to successfully locate Sioux families that I am researching. I highly recommended it. (Printed on acid free paper.)

                                            Book Description

Crisis Management in the Power Industry is an in-depth examination of the UK's electricity industry over the last seventy years, including such issues as the 1984 coal miner's strike and current privatization. The full implications of the vulnerability of the electricity supply are analyzed, with special reference to past industrial action. In the wake of privatization, challenging and controversial questions are raised which are of fundamental importance to the UK's economy, quality of life and political stability. In addition, a full account of the changes in structure, technology and industrial relations in the electricity supply industry are set forward. Crisis Management in the Power Industry should be widely read by members of the electrical industry as well as the general public. It is also of interest to those involved in public sector management, industrial relations and strategy.

"Liberals have been wrong about everything in the last half century," writes conservative pundit Ann Coulter, author of the bestselling anti-Clinton tome High Crimes and Misdemeanors. They've been especially wrong about Republicans, she writes. The bulk of Slander, in fact, is a well-documented brief dedicated to the proposition that most of the media despises anybody whose political opinions lie an inch to the right of the New York Times editorial page. This is hardly an original observation, though few have presented it with such verve. Coulter is the shock-jock of right-wing political commentary, able to dash off page after page of over-the-top but hilarious one-liners: "Liberals dispute slight reductions in the marginal tax rates as if they are trying to prevent Charles Manson from slaughtering baby seals." There's a certain amount of irony about an author who says "liberals prefer invective to engagement" also declaring, "The good part of being a Democrat is that you can commit crimes, sell out your base, bomb foreigners, and rape women, and the Democratic faithful will still think you're the greatest." But then carefully measured criticism never has been Coulter's shtick--or her appeal. Fans of Rush Limbaugh and admirers of Bernard Goldberg's Bias won't want to miss Slander. --John Miller

And that, along with her bright writing, sense of irony and outrage, and her relish at finally hitting back at political opponents (especially in the media) is what makes Slander such refreshing and provocative reading.”

"The immutable fact of politics in America is this: liberals hate conservatives."

Ann Coulter, whose examination of the Clinton impeachment was a major national bestseller and earned widespread praise, now takes on an even tougher issue. At a time when Democrats and Republicans should be overwhelmingly congenial, American political debate has become increasingly hostile, overly personal, and insufferably trivial. Whether conducted in Congress or on the political talk shows, played out at dinners or cocktail parties, politics is a nasty sport.

At the risk of giving away the ending: It's all liberals' fault.

Cultlike in their behavior, vicious in their attacks on Republicans, and in almost complete control of mainstream national media, the left has been merciless in portraying all conservatives as dumb, racist, power hungry, homophobic, and downright scary. This despite the many Republican accomplishments of the last few decades, as well as the Bush administration's expert handling of the country's affairs in the wake of the worst attacks on American soil and of the war that followed.

With incisive reasoning and meticulous research, Ann Coulter examines the events and personalities that have shaped modern political discourse -- the bickering, backstabbing, and name-calling that have made cultural mountains out of partisan molehills. She demonstrates how the media, especially, are biased -- and usually wrongheaded -- and have done all in their power to obfuscate the issues and the people behind them, bending over backward to villainize and belittle the right, while rarely missing an opportunity to praise the left.

Perhaps if conservatives had had total control over every major means of news dissemination for a quarter century, they would have forgotten how to debate, too, and would just call liberals stupid and mean. But that's an alternative universe. In this universe, the public square is wall-to-wall liberal propagan

Bottom Line: Ann highlights liberal media excesses in highly entertaining fashion.

What You Will Learn: The book does make you think how much journalists, through reflecting their perspective in the questions they ask and the articles they write, can influence both the public debate and how public policy issues are decided. Of course, Ms. Coulter, with her famed cutting wit and sharp words, does put a very harsh spin on everything. But after reading the book I think most people would agree that the press, like the rest of us, often can't free themselves from their political perspectives even if they are making a genuine effort and neutrality. On the other hand, the harsh treatment of the Clinton's by the press over the years does show that even if reporters vote for democrats, they don't always give them a free pass - especially if there is a good story to tell.

Parting Shot: This is a good beach read for the politically minded non-liberal among your friends and family!

                                                      5 out of 5 stars MSM Exposed.......2007-07-21

For those of you with an open mind and who are interested in politics, this book is a must. And if you're interested in where our country is going.

We've heard of people complaining about the "liberal media" but when you've read this book, you can no longer have any doubt.

The research and facts expounded in this work are jaw-dropping. The motives and agenda of the main stream media and how they go about their campaign are clearly exposed. I've been a political independent all my life, but the insidiousness of what the liberal establishment is doing is truly frightening. It's no wonder that Coulter is considered a pariah by the MSM and the left - she confronts their lies and hypocrisy with facts and reason (and a sarcastic wit). What could be more dangerous to those who lie and deceive?

If you haven't read her books, forget about the Ann you see on TV. Beneath the quips and sarcasm lies an insightful and penetrating mind. She is a brilliant writer who knows not only how to be enlightening but entertaining as well. In the age of feelings and emotions and wishful thinking, we are in need of a good reality slap in the face. Ann does that better than anyone.

1 out of 5 stars Coulter doesn't understand the role of the "liberal media".......2007-07-08

The whole premise of her book and commentary is completely off base and insulting to any through thinker. It's never been about "liberal" or "conservative" bias, as both "liberal" and "conservative" wings fall within the same framework of assumptions. In fact, if a system wishes to function well, it would be wise to contain a liberal bias, as it would serve as political "bounds" not to be crossed, or else you'll be labeled "anti-American", "treasonous", "socialist", etc., and this is what Coulter ever so apparently doesn't understand. Instead, she resorts to the classical, superficial "debate" of the "liberal conspiracy", since that necessitates much less thinking.

Take, for example, what she said about Anthony Lewis, a lead anti-Vietnam War reporter, who, in the early 1970s, began to speak against the War. Lewis simply stated that the Vietnam War began with good intention, but escalated to an unbearable and extreme level, and should be stopped. To the Coulter mind, he's part of the "liberal media" who hates America. If Lewis had been truthful, he would have stated that the war from the beginning (1954) was one of imperialist aggression, and the overriding objective was to colonize the country to a superior capitalist nation (America or France). Again, in Coulter's mind, Lewis was a "bitter" left winger; an extremist. It's also noteworthy that Lewis denounced the Vietnam War only after the elite called off the war in 1969 for being "too costly".

If you seriously want to understand the media, recall the fantastic propaganda utilized to convince most Americans of these incredible delusions about Iraq, which uncritically permitted the distribution of charges against the Iraqi government, which turned out to be completely false. Alas, the institutional roots of the media are run by major corporations tied in with even bigger ones, whose primary income comes from other businesses (advertisers).

But there's a reason people don't know how the media works...it requires extensive and widespread reading.

It is a joy to see the religion of liberalism exposed as such. It would have been amusing if it was not so serious: the de facto rulers of this great country are actually certifiable. Condemning the worship of the living God as illogical while being rabid fundamentalist themselves...
