Customer Reviews:
It's highly effective, Clear Anatomy for beginners..........2006-09-27
This is a very clear & concise, small-sized, paperback anatomy book that'll very likely impress beginners.
Why do I like this? Firstly, the origins & insertions of all major muscles are *clearly* depicted in a simple & accurate way, rendered capably in pencil. This is truly a book that gets straight to the point(!). The author is an established medical illustrator *and* an artist in general. She's a graduate of the University of Toronto, and was a member of the staff there for 8 years. Apparently, Canada really is good for more than just ice fishing, hockey, and penguins! :) Secondly, there's just no wasted space in this book. And its physical size is convenient! There're no photographs, although a few drawings from the masters of western art are included. It's mainly the author's own simplified treatment on anatomy here, and you can tell she didn't just copy other anatomy books when putting this together: there're some truly unique perspectives taken on the figures & muscles here. It's not quite as beautiful as Barcsay's Anatomy for the Artist; it's not as genius as Bridgman's Constructive Anatomy; it's not as creative as Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy; and it's not as in-depth as the many overly large treatments available today. Yet I'm still glad I have it!
Very helpful.......2006-03-11
For the beginning figure drawing student this is a must have resource. Lots of illustrations with explanations to study. The book is divided logically by anatomical part. I do not regret spending the money for the book.
One of the best.......2002-05-25
The author is a medical illustrator and her familiarity with human anatomy is evident with each drawing in this book. Both male and female anatomy is presented, and the differences between each are noted. Where possible, the anatomical and finished drawings are placed side by side so that underlying musculoskeletal features are shown on the surface. Most of the drawings are of dynamic poses to show how the parts of the body work together. This book will be one of your primary references on human anatomy.
If you want to draw the human figure, click the "buy" button.......2000-09-22
I was struggling to get the concept of drawing the human figure even though I was enrolled in a figure drawing this class. Within a week of buying this book, and this is true, I was drawing extremely well applying what I seen and learned from the book to my drawings. The book shows you both the anatomy of the body, something extremely helpful since you'll need to know what goes where when you draw, and the bone structure and how one bone connect to the other. Louise Gordon's drawings are simply magnificent and can easy be achieved just by reading her notes and drawing the way she does. Once you do you can easily apply it towards your own drawing technique. And with the many depictions of famous artist drawing renderings, this book with give you a very high jolt in artistic vision to where it's impossible for you to not improve. Do yourself a favor, BUY-THE-BOOK and also check out her other books. If you start a collection of How To books, Louise Gordon should be a primary choice.
A SATISFIED READER.......2000-03-31
I thought that this book was great. It was really helpful. It had many great and useful tips on the human anatomy, which really helped me alot since I couldn't draw the human figure if my life depended on it lol. Now at least you can tell it's a human.

Book Description
Che: The Photobiography of Che Guevara chronicles the life of Che Guevara, the passionate Argentinian revolutionary who aided Castro in the liberation of Cuba. Using over 300 black and white photographs, most never before seen, Christophe Loviny chronicles Guevara's life as the child of a privileged Argentinian family, his activism in South America, Africa, and Cuba, and his notorious death. Intermingled with text that includes excerpts from Che's letters and his diary, Loviny's work gives the reader a rare and intimate glimpse of a life often obscured by the revolutionary mystique peculiar to the man known to the world as Che.
Customer Reviews:
Che, The Legend.......2001-05-18
What about the dozens of people that Guevara put to death? Where is the mention of Guevara's wife and toddler who were left to fend for themselves whie "El Che" adventured in the mountains? Guevara is worthy of study but not of unctricized adoration. This is a book of exceptional photography but by no means is it a complete, accurate portrayal of Che Guevara.
THE CHE WE KNEW!.......2001-04-27
Tired of reactionary propaganda? Want to see the Che that we know? The Che that cared in a world dominated by corporate interests that didn't care whatsoever? Than this book is for you. This looks at Che the human, not just the legend we have come to know and love. Che working in the fields with the common man, (Can't picture good ol Dubya doing that, can you?) These pictures exemplifies what El Che cared about: US! The people ignored by governments and their corporate backers. The people in Latin America where a MAJORITY of which were poor. In many countries even today in Latin America, that is still the case. A great look at those that know and love Che Guevera and those that still need to be introduced to the legend that cared.
El Che.......2000-08-17
Absolutely Fantastic! The quality of the photographs and their subject matter are first class. Not only was I able to find out more about Che's life as a revolutionary, but to read about his childhood aswell was fascinating. I was especially intrigued to discover that the Cuban Secret Service actually disguised Che as a middle aged man so as to ensure his passage to Bolivia. Pure Brilliance! A powerful piece of work which gives a detailled insight into the life of one of the world's greatest men. Well worth a look!
The Photobiography of Che Guevara.......2000-04-28
Che Guevara was one of the greatest man to hit this earth. His influence has touched millons of people worldwide. This photobiography shows the respect due to a man that of his statute,"the Jesus Christ of his time" only in a guerrilla costume. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, well this is book is worth a lifetime and a half worth of words. Without photography it would be impossible to know how idles such as CHE himself would have lived. Words only begin to describe a person and his personal lifestyle, but when you see it throu pictures is like you live that life. Till this day Che is the only man that makes me get goosebumps everytime i see the picture of him lying there, dead, with his eyes open.

Book Description
Who hasn't suppressed a giggle or wiped away a tear after hearing a child's perspective on life or loved ones? Mary Ann Casler and Tona Pearce Myers went to schools, playgrounds, churches, and family gatherings to collect the gems that make up Butterfly Kisses. The stories, accompanied by kids' illustrations, reflect a wide variety of backgrounds and beliefs, but they all convey the joys and difficulties inherent in growing up. The book is divided into sections such as What I've Learned So Far, where children offer such sage advice to younger siblings as If you lie down with dogs, they might fall asleep on your lap. About God, one child quips, I know that God loves everybody, but he never met my sister. Offering laughs as well as unexpected insights, Butterfly Kisses shows that children, in spite of their seeming indifference to the adults around them, are indeed listening to and often repeating what grown-ups have to say.

Great gift for your friends, or your family!.......2003-06-09
I bought this book for my friend's birthday gift because I knew that she loves kids very much so I figured that she would love stories of kids, too. As I read stories, I began to feel ashamed of myself because the way kids see the world was so honest and sweet. And, I wanted to buy one for me. But when I I went to bookstore again, all of it was gone because it was so popular.
Sharing "Butterfly Kisses".......2001-05-16
Initially, I bought this book as a gift for a dear friend. My friend loved it so much I ordered several more for other friends and this time I made sure to include one for myself! The feelings the young storytellers share are deeply touching and in some cases profoundly insightful, with the original illustrations the perfect compliment to the contents of the book. You can enjoy "Butterfly Kisses" over and over -- and be sure to share it with a friend :)

If you buy only one film book in your life, this should be it. Maltin is the filmgoer's guide--the most compact, intelligent, and informative reference available. Alphabetized by title, each of its more than 19,000 entries lists year of release, running time, director, principal cast, and availability on video. Other guides may offer even more information, but Maltin's is distinguished by the quality of its reviews. Rating films on a scale from "****" to "BOMB," it offers a comprehensive introduction to the international cinema, covers the classics with the respect they deserve, unearths thousands of little-known gems, takes the wind out of the overrated, and laughs at the awful with appropriate good humor. If you want proof of Maltin's versatility, compare the reviews of The Battleship Potemkin, History Is Made at Night, Blue Velvet, and The Navy vs. the Night Monsters. Standard, crucial, great fun to read, chock full of trivia, and bursting with passion for the movies. --Raphael Shargel

Customer Reviews:
BOMB!.......2003-12-18
I can't believe Leonard Maltin would give Mission to Moscow and Baby Doll a ***1/2 rating and give Saratoga Trunk a *1/2 and Unconquered a **1/2. Stupid, stupid man who only cares about films HE likes. And no, Mission to Moscow is not a "well-made propaganda film", since everything in it is lies, lies and more lies.
Movie Guru or Overrated Rater?.......2003-11-20
I first learned about Mr. Maltin and his "Movie Bible" a few years ago, and I think it's the kind of book a lot of people either love or love to hate.
Pros: Short, to-the-point reviews, relevant information about the films and lots of neat bonus info that I as an enthusiastic amateur certainly didn't know about.
Cons: I often tend to disagree with the reviews, but then again it is a very subjective matter, based solely on your own perception of the film. I wasn't happy, though, to see one of my favorites "The Big Lebowski" recieve only 2½, but fair is fair...another, and more important, minus is the fact that far too few foreign films (e.g. danish?) are listed. The Movie World isn't all american, Mr. Maltin! And how does he define the nationality? Take the film "Reptilicus", shot in Denmark with a danish cast, speaking Danish. The only thing american about that movie is the director - and it's listed as 100% U.S.!
Having said all this, the book does give you a solid introduction to the world of film-watching, and I'm sure the editors had good reasons for making the choices they did. I'd sure like to hear them, though...
Great reference guide from a not so great film crictic.......2003-09-06
I love this book in that it's the perfect reference guide to just about any film out there. However, Leonard Maltin isn't the greatest film critic. Well, I guess no critic is that great. I just hate browsing through this book and seeing that he rates some of my favorite films as only two or two and a half stars out of four. Once in a while, he's right on, but other times he's just totally off.
But all in all, this is still a great reference guide.
It gets bigger every year.......2002-09-04
I try to buy the Leonard Maltin book every year. I am not alone.
I may occasionally disagree with a particular review but that is human nature. This book is a great resource book. As I get older the fine print is getting to my eyes. He does release a trade size version of the book. Check the back for the index of stars.
reveiwing the reveiwer........2002-07-01
Here's the deal with Leonard Maltin. Most of the time he delivers very good and informative reveiws that I find helpful, but when he doed not like the movie he is reviewing the reveiw usually falls short. In a way it makes sense that he would not go into the detail he would on a film he loved versus a film he hated considering there are thousands of movies reviewed here, but then the bad review is sort of worthless if he's not going to give a lot of thought into it. Sometimes a bad review is worth reading.
Another thing I want mention about any film guide Leonard Malten has put out is that if you watch movies and don't hold things like bad direction against the film then releaize Leonard Malten dose. Thats just being a good critic, but I can see were is would get on some ones nerves.

Imagine, for a preposterous moment, that 55 national leaders convened to write a document to guide the country for hundreds of years. It seems unlikely--given that our current contingent of so-called leaders can't agree on how to balance a checkbook--that they could reach consensus on such issues as the allotment of congressional seats. The political and ideological issues that faced the creators of the Constitution were similar in some ways to those at play today. And in some ways they were vastly different ones. Jack Rakove, a history professor at Stanford University, has in this book framed the process that led to the drafting of the constitution in its historical and political context to offer insight into the difficulty of interpreting that most influential of documents.
Book Description
From abortion to same-sex marriage, today's most urgent political debates will hinge on this two-part question: What did the United States Constitution originally mean and who now understands its meaning best? Rakove chronicles the Constitution from inception to ratification and, in doing so, traces its complex weave of ideology and interest, showing how this document has meant different things at different times to different groups of Americans.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent explication of the political thought behind the U.S. Constitution.......2007-09-13
I just finished reading this book for a class in U.S. Constitutional History and my Professor has aptly noted that this book really attempts to do two things: first, it makes this point about Originalism, demonstrating that any attempt to divine original meaning, intention, or understanding is perilous because of the diverse thought, political motivations, and interests present in the drafting and ratification of the Constitution. Second, it attempts to show the difficulties of Constitution-making, and how the framers attempted to reconcile a revolutionary republican ideology with the practical problems of governance.
While the conclusion of the first objective has been criticized and debated by various reviewers (and appropriately so), I believe that this book is extremely valuable in its accomplishment of this second purpose. With dense yet incredibly readable prose, Rakove demonstrates that the Constitution was an attempt to combine republican principles with the practical experiences of the States during the Revolution and under the Articles of Confederation.
Using a few topical discussions such as a discussion of views on Representation, the Presidency, and Rights, Rakove illuminates the thinking embraced by the Framers (such as that of Locke, Montesquieu, and others) and compares and relates such principles with the real experience and concerns of the Framers (such as Madison's view that the States were becoming destructive of property rights under the Confederation). Such descriptions go a long way in describing how and why the Framers crafted the systems of government found in the Constitution and why these systems drew some criticism from both inside and outside the Convention.
While this book is (as others have pointed out) aimed more towards scholars than the layman, I highly recommend this book to any serious student of the Constitution. Prior knowledge of the events of the Revolutionary period is a must, and having read Bailyn's "Ideological Origins of the American Revolution" or Wood's "Creation of the American Republic" will be helpful.
While the Originalism issue comes up here, this book will illuminate your understanding of the Framing of the Constitution generally, and it allows the reader to make up his/her own mind about the author's thesis (or really perhaps better here called an admonition) about the Constitution's original meaning.
Misreading the Intent of the Founders.......2007-07-23
Our Constitution has been misconceived by the so called "progressive" Left for over half a century - at least since the days of the New Deal. It is not a list of suggestions passed on by the founders to be modified in each succeeding generation according to the prevailing mood of that generation.
The Constitution is a compact between the people and their government establishing the basic framework by which a free people are to be governed, and the the limits of the power to be wielded over them by that government. As such, it was meant to be a permanent framework for the government of the American people - not to be altered at the whim of Congress or the Courts.
The founders provided a method for amending the original compact. They did not leave it to Congress alone, nor did they conceive that the Courts would usurp the authority to rewrite the Constitution by judicial fiat.
They deliberately made the amendment process cumbersome and difficult in order to insure that any future modification of our fundamental compact of government could be achieved only with an overwhelming consensus of the electorate and of the states. This was done in order to preserve the institutions of a self-governing Republic, and to protect the rights of the people against the momentary and transient whims of public opinion, or the machinations of any faction which might achieve a temporary moment of dominance over the government.
A Book for the thinking person.......2007-06-09
A previous reviewer said it best already: this book is not for the average reader. If the person picking up this volume has a basic understanding of 18th century American thought, an open mind--critical not gullible, an understanding that America was not a unified nation until the Civil War, this very informative, thought provoking book will prove a treasure. You may not agree with the author in everything, but make sure you know enough to know why you disagree.
A wealth of information, presented badly, bound by a poisonous idea.......2006-10-19
Jack Rakove certainly knows a lot of history about the founding fathers. Perhaps he knows too much. For the wealth of information in his brain has left him confused. It has left him confused about the meaning of the constitution. And it has led him to believe, since the meaning of the constitution is so hard to divine, that it actually has no meaning, and therefore we must be at the mercy of judges to mete out justice.
This is poppycock. No, worse, it is dangerous.
I am not claiming that explication of original intent is easy. But just because something is hard is not sufficient reason to abandon the project. We owe it to ourselves to be governed by laws as they were understood at the time they were written. If those laws are insufficient for today's needs, then they need to be amended by legislative processes, not tailored by a particular judge's sense of justice.
I wonder if Jack Rakove is actually persuaded by his own ideas, or whether a better description would be simply that he is complicit in the theft of our constitution by today's legal theorists. I think that if you could really burrow into the depths of a persons soul, you'd find the answer is the latter. Because I think Jack Rakove is actually a smart guy.
Excellent book but not for everyone.......2006-05-16
This is an excellent book if you really want to understand the Constitution in extreme detail. I did and I enjoyed the book although the writing style is very wordy and long winded at times. This is not a good book for the general public but it was never intended as such.
