Customer Reviews:
Classical portraiture at its best.......2000-08-09
If you have the slightest interest in portraiture and/or classical art, this inexpensive book , along with others in the Dover art Library series, is a must for your collection. Ingres is arguably one of the greatest portraitist ever and the reproductions in this book are a testament to that. Unlike the works of many of his contemporaries , "Romanticists", Ingres was a Classicist in the strictest sense of the word, as evident in these drawings and especially in his paintings. Although i am more an admirer of the style of such painters as Sargent, whose looser approach is the anthisesis of Ingres' careful, detailed, deliberate, yet graceful style, i still enjoyed studying these masterpieces in this book of drawings.

A good laugh!.......2002-01-07
After working all day, and sometimes all night, at the university, I like to read humorous works to help me put it all in perspective. Whether it be academia, science, business, law, etc., Harris find the humor in these professions. I figure if I can still laugh at the end of the day, I am doing well. Harris helps me laugh.

Worth it's weight in gold.......2007-08-24
Someone gave me this book my first year of teaching. I have now taught music for 6 years, and have used this book every year. Each song is notated musically, and accompanied by the game and a short introduction as to the origins. I also teach Kindermusik, and can see that many of our activities must have been taken right out of this book. I HIGHLY recommend this book, and although I wish you great luck in finding it for under $100, or at the library, you wont be disappointed if you spend the money.
great resource.......2002-01-12
This book has a wide variety of different musical games, all of which are singing and movement games. Perfect for the Kodaly educator. Many of the games can be found in more readily available and inexpensive resources, however, so try to get titles before you buy.

Book Description
Slovenian philosopher Miran Bozovic's An Utterly Dark Spot examines the elusive status of the body in early modern European philosophy by examining its various encounters with the gaze. Its range is impressive, moving from the Greek philosophers and theorists of the body (Aristotle, Plato, Hippocratic medical writers) to early modern thinkers (Spinoza, Leibniz, Malebranche, Descartes, Bentham) to modern figures including Jon Elster, Lacan, Althusser, Alfred Hitchcock, Stephen J. Gould, and others. Bozovic provides startling glimpses into various foreign mentalities haunted by problems of divinity, immortality, creation, nature, and desire, provoking insights that invert familiar assumptions about the relationship between mind and body.
The perspective is Lacanian, but Bozovic explores the idiosyncrasies of his material (e.g., the bodies of the Scythians, the transvestites transformed and disguised for the gaze of God; or Adam's body, which remained unseen as long as it was the only one in existence) with an attention to detail that is exceptional among Lacanian theorists. The approach makes for engaging reading, as Bozovic stages imagined encounters between leading thinkers, allowing them to converse about subjects that each explored, but in a different time and place. While its focus is on a particular problem in the history of philosophy, An Utterly Dark Spot will appeal to those interested in cultural studies, semiotics, theology, the history of religion, and political philosophy as well.
Miran Bozovic is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He is the author of Der grosse Andere: Gotteskonzepte in der Philosophie der Neuzeit (Vienna: Verlag Turia & Kant, 1993) and editor of The Panopticon Writings by Jeremy Bentham (London: Verso, 1995).

Book Description
This isn't an ordinary Civil War tale. It is the all-true but little-known story of Adam "Stovepipe" Johnson-Kentucky legend, Texas hero, and Confederate cavalry officer-who boldly led the first Confederate raid across the Mason-Dixon Line to capture the thriving river-port community of Newburgh, Indiana, during the American Civil War. Not a shot was fired.
With the politically divided landscape of Civil War Kentucky and the steamboat economy of the Ohio River as its backdrop, this is the historically accurate account of surprise nocturnal strikes, opportunistic military occupations, and a swashbuckling Rebel icon's daring daylight invasion into the Northern homeland that sealed the fate of western Kentucky for the remainder of the war.
Vivid, thorough, and painstakingly researched, Thunder from a Clear Sky documents five critical weeks of 1862 Civil War history and shares the untold tale of one man's immeasurable impact on a nation at war.

A Forgotten Gem Shines Again.......2007-03-06
Adam Johnson's Confederate Raid on Newburgh, Indiana, was a little-known footnote to history even in the communities where the story unfolded. Most who knew about the raid knew only about Johnson's use of a phony cannon battery to deceive the Indiana homeguard into giving up the town. Thunder From a Clear Sky is the equivalent of a backstage pass into the workings and reasons behind the raid. Told in a story-telling style, this book is a wonderful example of what is possible when a talented researcher and writer dusts off a forgotten gem. The book has single-handedly sparked a revival of interest into Adam Johnson's amazing life story.
A welcome contribution to Civil War and military history shelves........2007-01-06
Written by Ray Mulesky, Thunder From a Clear Sky is the breathtaking true story of Confederate cavalry officer Adam "Stovepipe" Johnson, who led the first Confederate raid across the Mason-Dixon Line to seize the river-port community of Newburgh, Indiana during the American Civil War. Not a shot was fired. A highly accessible true story of how an ordinary man proved capable of a military master stroke, and the fallout thereafter when the territory he claimed was retaken by Union troops. A welcome contribution to Civil War and military history shelves.
A nice read.......2006-10-12
This book is a fascinating story. The author puts you into the story. You can almost smell the gunpowder.
History comes alive!.......2006-09-01
Although I'm only mildly interested in historical books, I truly enjoyed reading this book. The book's ability to engage my interest was through taking a true story with real people from an ordinary place and telling the story of how they acted and what happened when the history altering civil war directly touches their lives through one man's actions. Very thought provoking! The writing so skillfully weaves details from historical research with the people involved in this event that it is both enjoyable and informative. Great book!
Thunder From a Clear Sky: Stovepipe Johnson's Confederate Raid on Newburgh, Indiana by Raymond Mulesky.......2005-10-24
I have read a lot of books regarding the Civil War. Being a history buff, I'm always looking for more. Living in Southern Indiana made this book appealing because it is local history. More interesting is that it takes place basically on "the line" between the north and south. With only the river separating the strong beliefs on both sides of the War, the story is true for so many borderline areas. Ray writes in a way that makes the reader believe they are actually witnessing the raid and I was able to relate easily to the feelings that the characters were feeling. When he described the chaos in Newburgh and the clear conflicts with the inhabitants, it was very easy to get wrapped up in it all. He also takes the time to give a full narative to the people in the story so that the reader understands throughout how they fit into the book. It is a very well researched historical account of the struggles of the people during that time. As someone who constantly has a non-fiction book in progress, I highly recommend it.
Book Description
The civil rights establishment, contends Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, has made a career off the downturn of America's inner city, promising solutions but offering only a Band-Aid. Peterson's is a platform of empowerment, teaching individuals and families how to tap into the power within, rather than depending on handouts. Chronicling the failure of the welfare system, denouncing the notion of reparations, citing problems within black churches, and even condemning current black "leaders," Peterson argues that the crisis we face is spiritual, and no economic solution will suffice. He skillfully weaves the realms of politics, culture, psychology, and religion into this profound and relevant book.
Customer Reviews:
Powerful!!.......2007-08-15
This book will offend certain groups of people. However, it is very powerful and speaks the truth which the white majority are afraid to speak for themselves. Jesse Lee Peterson has lots of guts to stand up to being threatened & bullied by those who he opposes.
Great Info.......2007-07-26
Mr. Peterson is speaking about things that MANY blacks speak about. The name calling, why? I have NEVER seen him call someone a uncle tom. All the people in the review that name call, may fell insecure about the truth. If you don't like Rev Peterson, continue to hate white people and read Dr. Dyson's garbage. If you want to change your life, then take personal responsibility and raise your standards. Kill the anger, and you will move forward.
It is a great book from a good example of a person who stands up for what he believes in.
Courageous author............2007-01-27
.......Rev. Jesse must have a lot of courage. Just look at the kill-the-messenger posts in these reviews and the name-calling.
I love this man.
He's standing up for the people whilst other black "leaders" busy themselves helping the Democrats keep the people shackled up by welfare in "voter plantations" (aka ghettoes and inner cities).
What a waste of human capital. The REAL black power will happen when blacks realize that moving their votes to the Republican Party will doom the Democrats' welfare agenda for them, and earn them what is truly needed: vouchers for school choice. Real education would be the best "reparations."
A remarkable man with remarkable bravery carrying a remarkable message.
Jesse Lee Speaks Truth.......2007-01-10
At great personal risk, Rev. Peterson speaks out against the current Black leadership in America. His analyses of the problems in the Black community offers such common sense that it is difficult to understand how anyone could not see the truth of what he says. However, the Black leadership, along with the liberal White elites, have a vested interest in not solving these problems. As long as problems exist, these individuals and groups will continue to rake in millions of dollars in contributions, and they will wield power over the Black vote. When Black Americans start looking to themselves for the solution to problems of poverty, drug abuse, out of wedlock childbirth, and violence they will no longer give their power and their money to the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, or Louis Farrakhan. When Black Americans take on the responsibility themselves to rebuild their communities through hard work and a return to Christian values, they will free themselves from the chains of hate, victim-hood, and anger that the Black leadership so adeptly instills.
I highly recommend that everyone concerned with helping the Black community and especially Blacks themselves, read this book. It will awaken everyone to how Black leaders promote racism while pretending to fight it. It describes in clear terms what happened that destroyed the family, and caused such chaos in the Black community. It offers the way back to stability, prosperity, strong families, and a healthy community.
It's about time........2006-08-02
I couldn't agree more with the book. It's about time we wake up and stop concerning ourselves with white people and build up our own communities. This book couldn't have been more clear. Although it's written with a Christian perspective, even non Christians can glean something from this book.
