Very Good Book.......2005-03-15
Hello, I am the author of the Kid Concoctions Book series and I think that this book series is wonderful! The fact that is has different projects than the Kid Concoctions series makes it a great book to own in addition to the Kid Concoctions Book series. Which book came first really doesen't matter, our first book was published in 1997 and was based on our Famous Kid Concoctions Video series that was released in 1989. Both book series are great rescources for parents and teachers. In fact, we would love to have the author of this series as a guest on our new national TV series. Happy Concocting!!
Can you all read??.......2004-08-28
For all of you out there who thought you were buying the PBS book...can you read??! The authors are completely different! And each book on Amazon lists the author of each and every book. It's nobody's fault but your own that you purchased the wrong book...not the publisher, not the author, not Amazon.com. Don't blame other people for your own mistakes, and then write a bad review for a perfectly wonderful book. If you had been paying attention to the titles, you would also notice that they are NOT the same. Spend a little more time on PBS watching Read Between the Lions and you may not make the same mistake again.
This was published LONG before the PBS book!.......2004-08-17
I am about to order this book because I have others from the series and it looks great. I started to skim the reviews just to make sure it was going to be as good as all the other books I have from this publisher which are fantastic -- and I came across a bunch of angry reviews from people claiming this book to be a rip off!! :0
I have seen the PBS show these people are refering to - and it too is very good. However, I am very upset to see negative reviews of this book -- just because people *thought* they were ordering the PBS series book. The books they were looking for published in 2000+ The book the are *claiming* to be a *rip off* was published in 1998 -- and others in the series, long before that!!!
If you order this book, you will find excellent projects I am sure. It will not be the projects from the PBS show -- but that is NOT because this book is a rip off!
Very average at best........2004-06-14
I have not read the othe concoctions books people are talking about, but I did buy this one after seeing a woman on Living It Up with Ali & Jack. I could only remember the book had the name concoctions in it. My neighbor then informed me that I had purchased the wrong book. Oh well, I am not returning the book, but I am a little concerned that other people are making the same unfortunate mistake. In an age where money is hard to come by it is very sad that publishers would create look a like books wiht similar names. This book seems to benefit from the overwhelming success of the other series, I am sure that is not by mistake. In any event I will be purchasing the other books because that is what I was looking for. I looked over this book with by children and there was very little interest on their part, they only want to make the projects they saw on TV, which are NOT in this book. The book is a good concept, but is very average at best.
NOT THE PBS BOOK!!!.......2004-06-11
Becareful, I read a review here that said that this is the book from PBS... It IS NOT. I bought the book after reading the review and just sent it back. It is not even by the same authors who wrote the PBS book. I agree with some of the other reviewers, this sounds like a scam job at the expense of children and their parents. I may have kept the book if I wasn't so upset about being deceived. If you are looking for the PBS book it is called "The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions" by John & Danita Thomas. I have sent an email to the authors about this rip off book, I hope they take some type of action.

Awesome resource.......2004-05-26
I use this book both with my kids at home and in my classroom. I love that the recipes allow children to be so creative. Generic suggestions allow the kids to learn art techniques, then apply them their way. My kids produce projects that they are proud of because they are truly their own.
A good craft book........1998-11-25
I found this book to be a good rescource for parents and teachers. However, several of my friends and I bought it by mistake thinking it was a book we saw on TV called "The Ultimate Book Of Kid Concoctions". Although this book is not as creative and entertaining as "The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions", it is still a worth while purchase.
LOTS of ideas and recipes for art materials........1998-07-16
I'm an elementary science teacher, and I used this book for an after school workshop that I held with the art teacher. The kids loved it. They really enjoyed making their own art materials, and then getting the chance to use them.
The book has recipes for all sorts of materials like paints, clay, and glue. But it doesn't stop there. It also has all sorts of suggestions for projects to do with the materials you make.
The only downside about the book is that it didn't put as much emphasis on the science of making the art materials as it could have. Even more information about how each ingredient contributes to the finished product, and more explicit encouragement to experiment with the amounts and types of ingredients would really help kids understand the "science of art".

Book Description
A sound track of Germany in the early twentieth century might conjure military music and the voice of Adolf Hitler rising above a cheering crowd. In A National Acoustics, Brian Currid challenges this reductive characterization by investigating the transformations of music in mass culture from the Weimar Republic to the end of the Nazi regime.
Offering a nuanced analysis of how publicity was constructed through radio programming, print media, popular song, and film, Currid examines how German citizens developed an emotional investment in the nation and other forms of collectivity that were tied to the sonic experience. Reading in detail popular genres of music—the Schlager (or “hit”), so-called gypsy music, and jazz—he offers a complex view of how they played a part in the creation of German culture.
A National Acoustics contributes to a new understanding of what constitutes the public sphere. In doing so, it illustrates the contradictions between Germany’s social and cultural histories and how the technologies of recording not only were vital to the emergence of a national imaginary but also exposed the fault lines in the contested terrain of mass communication.
Brian Currid is an independent scholar who lives in Berlin.

Book Description
1919. It all began on the banks of the Meuse River. No sooner had a colonel of French infantry approached one of our junior officers on November 12th, saying, Tell your commanding officer that he can pull his regiment out any time he wants to, than a couple of the Old Timers found themselves of the opinion that an account should be written of our experiences. As a result, about the first of January, Colonel Sheldon decreed that one officer, to be designated as Historian, should not be compelled to spend all his time driving imaginary machine gun nests out of the wooded hill bordering upon Chaumont. Contents: At Camp Upton; The Crossing; Flanders; Lorraine; The Vesle Defensive; The Advance to the Aisne; The Argonne; The Meuse; and The Hardest Battle of the War.

'I' Co., The First and Last to Fight on Okinawa.......2004-09-04
Col. E. Chalgren, Jr. USA (Ret.), Former commander 3rd Battalion, 305th Infantry, 77th Division wrote the following after reviewing the draft:
Your book is marvelous in so many ways. First, it is truly a soldier's story-second, it is remarkably accurate-third, it provides professional substance of "instructive value"-as well a citizen soldiers' devotion to comrades and victory-and the many miseries & hardships endured plus the fun of occational beating the system some harmless way or sharing in some hilarious escapades. What a meaningful contribution, what a reminder of what dedicated, strong men we were then over fifty years ago.

Must reading/ listening re:current events.......2007-09-20
I read the book last year and then listened to the CD's on a car trip. This is such relevant information to understand what's going on in the USA and the world. Amy Goodman is the premier journalist who digs deep, asking the most important questions, tying world events together in a network to promote the comprehension of the interrelationship of seemingly unrelated events. Big media fails to do this, so there little understanding the cause and effect of all important global events. Watch Amy Goodman's Democracy Now! to get a clear picture of world events.
Radio Free America - On CD.......2007-06-14
Far more intriguing format than the book! This profound document comes across far better on CD than in print. Like an extended "Democracy Now" with the addition of subjective commentary. If you listen to "Democracy Now", buy it, asap! If you don't, well... you should. For the past half century, Pacifica Radio has been doing much of the most important journalistic work in America. The Goodmans' stunning journaling of events spanning the period from 1991-2003 is at once highly intimate and of universal importance. I feel this set of CD's maybe the greatest "audio book" ever recorded. Like Ed Murrow's "You Can Hear It Now" LPs of the 1950's, the essential stories of our era are here, recorded up close and personal, as they rightly should be. The complicity between the U.S. government - brutal militaries and paramilitaries world-over - the arrogant and unconscionable greed of the dominant corporations - and a submissive media - is illumined once again in the light of damning evidence (as is the battle to shed that light). That battle is crucial for the survival of life on upon this planet, and Amy et all are leading the way. One can only wait for the CD version of "Static".
Is Amy Goodman a liberal who is protecting the Neo-Con? This is a paradox indeed! .......2007-06-11
Is Amy Goodman a liberal who is protecting the Neo-Con? This is a paradox indeed!
I read this book when it first hit the store shelves and back then I was very pleased with Amy Goodman's reporting on "Democracy Now." She seemed to genuinely care about the issues of the day, or so I thought.
The many topics she tackles on her show as well as in this book will lance through your consciousness until time indefinite, but unfortunately her discourse comes-across as downright hollow and insincere since she receives contributions from the likes of the Ford Foundation, the Soros Foundation, the Carlyle Group, the CIA, The Council On Foreign Relations, and The Trilateral Commission. (Just to name several sources of income for her daily TV/radio program).
Furthermore, she vociferously addresses her outrage against the establishment media when in reality she is apart of it. Hyperion publishing published her book, which is a subsidiary of Walt Disney. Of course that doesn't really matter considering most authors have to travel through the mainstream avenue to get their voices heard, so no one can fault her for that. But what we can fault her for is accepting money from secret societies, which are making her exorbitantly wealthy, and not reporting 9/11 truths.
Amy was about a mile from the World Trade Center Building 7 sight when it imploded at 5:20pm on September 11, 2001 and she failed to report that fact.
So the axiomatic conclusion in ascertaining this story is elementary. Amy Goodman witnessed WTC 7's collapse and for some reason or another she deemed it wasn't news worthy and decided not to report it to the public, which in my opinion is egregiously insidious and treasonous...making her apart of the conspiracy!
So, the next inquiry has to simply be, whose primary interest was she protecting?
And if you need proof of Amy Goodman's media deception just watch the footage on-line of her running in the opposite direction as WTC7 collapses.
I had to digress about that before I went on with the review of this book because I deem it a personal responsibility to tell the truth as I ascertain it.
Insofar as "The Exception To The Rulers" goes it's an exceptional read. There's a litany of information and anecdotes that she toils around with in this book that everyone should read even though they may have heard it all before. Much of the same diatribe can be found in Greg Palast's books and news reports as well as Noam Chomsky's and Gore Vidal's.
Also, I must confess that I loved her sardonic approach! It was outstanding, especially in chapter 2 "Oilygarchy" where she lampoons characters such as Dick Cheney and uncovers detailed information about the Bush, bin Laden connections and how George W. Bush blocked FBI counter-terrorism chief John O' Neill's investigation of Saudi involvement in terrorist acts. This was great stuff in the tradition of Alex Jones and Anthony J. Hilder.
However, what was disappointing was chapter one titled "Blowback" she starts her diatribe on how her day was progressing just before the September 11 attack. She then goes into detail about the tumultuous events in New York City from her own perspective, which is an engrossing story. Unfortunately, it is just that...a story because the term "Blowback" means revenge.
In this case the title "Blowback" is in reference to Al Qaeda attacking us on 9/11, but Al Qaeda isn't a real terrorist organization, so in reality Amy Goodman is promulgating the official story, or should I eloquently say "official fabrication."
In chapter 3 "Crackdown," Amy does expose the USA Patriot Act provisions that eviscerated our constitutional rights. Read the book to find out what she says about it because there is so much information in it that I would have to write a 12-page report to scratch the surface.
It's abhorrent to think that so much corruption is being proliferated from Washington D.C., which Amy Goodman elaborates on by saying "the assault on civil liberties doesn't end with the USA Patriot Act. President Bush decided that he can declare an American citizen an `enemy combatant' who can be locked up, denied counsel, and tried before a military tribunal instead of a regular court. The United States can send these prisoners into a legal netherworld on Guantanamo Bay in Cuba." Then Goodman asked the million-dollar question, "Whose warped vision of America is this?"
That is the question Amy never reveals and that's what is so sad about this book. 80% of what is in this book is accurate, she just doesn't go far enough so I'm giving this book four stars. I think it's worth reading for surface history/politics, but if you're looking for a deeper analysis then look elsewhere. But if you are new to this then start here. I have mixed emotions about Amy's creditability because in reality she's protecting the perpetrators of 9/11. By not exposing that 9/11 was an inside job when there is a plethora of evidence to behold is irresponsible. Even still Ms Goodman's style of reporting is vital even though she won't go for broke!
kt99l.......2007-05-14
Good book but is only the tip of the iceberg. Watch America Freedom to Facism. And Vote Ron Paul president in 2008.
Amy is exceptional !!.......2007-03-24
For those of us who just listen to the mainstream media, this is a wakeup call. You know how much you are missing once you listen to her.
