Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Still a good introduction to Licensing.......2007-03-28

While this book was written in 1995, it still does a very good job of introducing the artist to the world of licensing, and is worth the purchase price. Pair it with Michael Woodward's book "Licensing Art 101", for a more complete picture of the industry.

3 out of 5 stars good info, boring read.......2007-01-03

This book has some very basic information about licensing, but it was difficult to understand and still didn't give much insight on the topic.

4 out of 5 stars Sadly, still one of the best references out there.......2006-03-23

Despite a boom in licensing and totally new markets exploding for licensed artwork and design (especially with opportunities for American and European artists, designers and industrial designers now working directly with Chinese manufacturers), this old tome is unfortunately still one of the better books available for the creative/businessperson. This subject desperately needs revising and updating... hello? Caryn R. Leland? We need you!

Great introduction book for those wishing to enter the licensing market. very informative. Reviews and explains each paragraph and its significance in a Licensing Agreement.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book to Start With!.......2003-08-05

Based upon the reviews here I didn't spring for this book but obtained it through interlibrary loan. I'm glad I didn't miss it!
As a potential licensor I found this book to go into exactly the amount of depth I need to understand licensing and to get started.
The section of protecting an idea and specifically what to if a company won't sign a non-disclosre is worth the cost of the book alone. Coming from publishing (I have 26 books out) this isn't an issue, but with designs I was concerned. Now I know how to deal with it.
Bottom line, this book is well worth the low Amazon price!

              Book Description

Seeing America explores the camera work of five women who directed their visions toward influencing social policy and cultural theory. Doris Ulmann made portraits of celebrated artists in urban areas and lesser-known craftspeople in rural places; Dorothea Lange magnified human dignity in the midst of poverty and unemployment; Marion Post Wolcott believed steadfastly in collective strength as the antidote to social ills and the best defense against future challenges; Margaret Bourke-White applied avant-garde advertising techniques in her exploration of the human condition; and Berenice Abbott, captured the continuous motion and chaotic energy that characterized the modern cityscape. Combining feminist biography with analysis of visual texts, McEuen considers the various prisms though which each woman saw and revealed the intricate workings of American culture in the 1920s and 1930s.

              Customer Reviews:

              4 out of 5 stars Photographers' lives.......2000-05-11

This careful and informative book grew from the author's dissertation on visual imagery and photography. The biographies of the photographers are examined fully, and in their social, political, and historical contexts. Unfortunately, only a dozen or so photographs by each artist is included. One yearns for the images! The narrative is careful, conscientious, and of value to anyone with an interest in the lives and words of these important photographers. The book would have been greatly improved by the inclusion - likely prohibitively expensive to the publisher, an academic press - of many more examples from the subjects' life's work: photography.

                    Book Description

The longhorns are loose! They're a mighty big handful for their human Boss as they roam the range looking for mischief. But when the Boss has had enough of their sass, he cuts loose with a "short tale" in ranch-style rhyme. Stand back for a stampede of smiles! These delightful longhorn cartoons and verses were created by Austin, Texas artist Kristene Newcomb and her father, New Mexico longhorn rancher Fred Balmer. Mr. Balmer's keen observations on ranch life and related topics, told in humorous cowboy style, perfectly complement Ms. Newcomb's whimsical, expressive longhorn characters.

A summary statement of the essence of what I have to say in this book on the meaning of love can be found in the archives of H-Japan in my paper "Love and Duty in the Tokugawa Samurai" for July 1999.

LOVE AND SINCERITY, IN THE TOKUGAWA SAMURAI

                                INTRODUCTION

This essay (a revision of a paper given in October 1998 to the ASACP Conference at the University of New South Wales) seeks to explore the extent to which the motives of love and sincerity (_makoto_) affected the Tokugawa samurai in their thought and action. Section I gives an extremely short summary of my elsewhere published concept of love. Section II then examines the place that this may have had in bushido, and compares and contrasts it with the place of sincerity, and the relation of the two to honor, shame, duty, and the reference group (_seken_).

I---LOVE I begin with an account of love, wide enough to be interesting, to catch as much as possible of what we ordinarily talk about, but narrow enough to yield analytic precision.[1]

First I define, then I elaborate, and I define love as "a disposition with regard to a person which (arising for no reason) shows itself in active concern for the welfare of that person and pleasure in their company".[2]

                                * It must be a disposition (to feel and behave) rather than itself a feeling or action since you may well love somebody even when you're not thinking of them at all or are (even) feeling atypically displeased with them. We'd then say that though you're not now getting any pleasure, you would, if circumstances were different. * It must arise for no reason (or cause) since we say that we love people not for this or that (which may change) but for "themselves alone"--- a dummy term equivalent to "no reason." "No matter what you do, or how you change, I will always love you." We might say (though I wouldn't) that we love people only for their "essence" and never for their changeable accidents. We love "for better for worse" etc.. Come what may. * A second reason for claiming love to be uncaused is that we conceive it as a gift of our own free will. That's presupposed when we promise. If I am not free, to give my love or withhold it, then I can't rationally say "I, Jack, promise to love you, Jill, till death us do part," etc.. A forced "promise" is no promise, hence the escape from causality. But, much more importantly, it also escapes morality. * I don't think we ever see ourselves as morally obliged to make somebody a free gift. I _am_ morally obliged to return the $20 I have borrowed, but not obliged freely to make a gift of $20. A gift is a gift precisely because it is not owed. I do have a moral obligation to be considerate of each and every person with whom I deal, but I have no obligation to love anybody at all. I'm free to pick and choose about who (if anybody) I'll love.

That needs qualification because ability to give implies ability to promise (if I can give you something then I can promise it; if I can promise it then I must be able to give it). And if I have a moral obligation to keep my promises then, if I promise to love you then I do have a moral obligation to keep that promise to love you. But I can't see (again with qualifications in connexion with children [3.]) that anybody ever has any moral obligation to start loving somebody.

That suggests that love can't be earned or deserved or excited in somebody else, despite Judy Garland's wail that "You made me love you" _etc._. . * Love shows itself in a care for the other's well-being, both actively and passively. Actively, when I do something to advantage my beloved, passively when I rejoice at the other's advantage, or lament their disadvantage. * Love also shows itself in the pleasure the lover takes in his beloved. Jill shows her love in her delight in the company of Jack, and pines in his absence. It's a pleasure to be with someone you love. * This analysis rules out psychological egoism, or the belief that whenever we help or care for anybody we are, in the final analysis, only interested in ourselves, for egoism is supported neither by observation nor by conceptual analysis. * As a matter of observed fact we very often see people helping others, even to their own disadvantage. Observation suggests people are often altruistic. * Neither is it conceptually necessarily true that we are always motivated, in the final analysis, by self-interest. Of course it's true that if Jack wants to do, and succeeds in doing, what Jill wants then Jack does satisfy "his own" want: he does what he wants when he does what Jill wants. But that doesn't imply that what he wants is his own advantage. For, although it must be true that bombers always and only aim at their targets (that's what a target, by definition is---it's an internal accusative), still it doesn't follow that they never "in the final analysis" aim at factories or ships. By parity, the external accusative of Jack's will may well be Jill's advantage, even at the expense of his own. Our Western idea, that we can't (save where we've promised) have a duty to love, sharply diverges from the Asian in that, if I am right, children do not have a duty to love their parents (even though I think that for the most part, parents have a duty to love their children). Kant's view that no person should ever be used as a mere means would stop us rating the welfare of the family over that of the individual, as in traditional Asia's arranged marriages with the desire for children just to carry on the line. (It also disallows the common Western practice of having children just to advance the peace of mind of one or both of the couple who have them.)

                                    Book Description

Broken Bonds: My Immoderate Life of Love, Passion, War on Affirmative Action and Jack Welch's GE describes the sordid fall from grace of once celebrated General Electric CEO Jack Welch. Welch, widely held to be the most influential CEO of the 20th Century, certainly influenced the era of "I know nothing!" CEOs like Ken Lay of Enron and Bernie Ebbers of WorldCom. In Broken Bonds we see the foundation laid for the corporate scandals that eviscerated Wall Street in the early 21st Century.

Broken Bonds lays bare the federal government's responsiblity for the financial scandals as the do-nothing SEC rapidly descends from respected regulatory body to handmaiden of the very industries it was intended to regulate. The culture of corporate scandal, shareholder abuse, and CEO self-dealing is seen as the end result of a regulatory body on the take.

Broken Bonds is also the story of America's broken promise to those who pull themselves up by their bootstraps to compete in the mythical colorblind society. Jett, a Harvard MBA and two time MIT graduate says, "I tried to do what was noble. I never identified my race on any college or job application. I refused any opportunity that seemed affirmative action related. I was determined to set a standard that proved that Blacks needed no intellectual crutch. I believe that I succeeded in that endeavor but must now face the last bastion of racism, the American legal system."

Broken Bonds offers a seldom-voiced view of the African-American experience. Jett represents the antithesis of New York Times star reporter, Jayson Blair. Jett was unquestionably master of his own house and that house was blown to smithereens rather than see a dominant Black male outwitted his adversaries rather than being dependent on handouts.

Broken Bonds is a winning combination of sex, money, and power from a man of gigantic melancholy and tremendous mirth who hides not his own frailties and lived life ferociously. The reader visits exotic locals in China, Thailand, Brazil, Macau and Marrakech and feels swept along by the breathtaking speed of events which would propel Jett to headline news coverage across the globe.

Hollywood producing luminaries Wendy Finerman (Forrest Gump, Stepmom, The Fan), Spike Lee (Malcolm X, Do the Right Thing, She's Gotta Have It), and Patrick McCormick (Peter Pan, Boys on the Side, Donnie Brasco) have all expressed interest in Jett's story.

As an African American, I am offended that a man who was convicted by the SEC of recording illusory profits and deceiving his firm would have the nerve to advise other blacks about anything. This man's principle talent is remaining a megalomanic in spite of all kinds of evidence that he is a unprincipled charleton. Mr. Jett, I have some news for you, you are not the only black to have ever gone to an ivy league school, traveled the world and made lots of money. Some of us are just modest about it and more focused on helping others than on self-aggrandizement.

Noam Chomsky is considered the father of modern linguistics. In this richly detailed criticism of American foreign policy, he seeks to redefine many of the terms commonly used in the ongoing American war on terrorism. Surveying U.S. actions in Cuba, Nicaragua, Turkey, the Far East and elsewhere over the past half a century along with the modern American war in Iraq, Chomsky indicates that America is just as much a terrorist state as any other government or rogue organization. George W. Bush's 2003 invasion of Iraq drew worldwide criticism, in part because it seemed to present a new philosophy of pre-emptive war and an appearance of global empire building. But according to Chomsky, such has been the operating philosophy of American foreign policy for decades. Opponents of the Bush administration's tactics consistently point out how the American government supported Saddam Hussein for many years prior to the 1990 invasion of Kuwait (pictures of Donald Rumsfeld shaking Saddam's hand are easy to come by) as a means of pointing out how the United States is happy to fund despots when it's in American interests. But Chomsky, armed with extensive historical notation, takes this notion further, arguing how the repression of other nations' citizenry is, in fact, the very reason Americans support certain foreign leaders. The charges made throughout the book are severe, as are the dire consequences he posits if current trends are not reversed, and Chomsky is no more likely to make friends or gain supporters from the mainstream now than he's ever been. But Hegemony or Survival is relatively dispassionate. Instead of relying on camp or shock value or personal attacks as some of his contemporaries have done, Chomsky drives his well-supported points steadily forward in an earnest and highly readable style. --John Moe

                                      Book Description

"Reading Chomsky today is sobering and instructive . . . He is a global phenomenon . . . perhaps the most widely read voice on foreign policy on the planet." The New York Times Book ReviewAn immediate national bestseller, Hegemony or Survival demonstrates how, for more than half a century the United States has been pursuing a grand imperial strategy with the aim of staking out the globe. Our leaders have shown themselves willing-as in the Cuban missile crisis-to follow the dream of dominance no matter how high the risks. World-renowned intellectual Noam Chomsky investigates how we came to this perilous moment and why our rulers are willing to jeopardize the future of our species. With the striking logic that is his trademark, Chomsky tracks the U.S. government's aggressive pursuit of "full spectrum dominance" and vividly lays out how the most recent manifestations of the politics of global control-from unilateralism to the dismantling of international agreements to state terrorism-cohere in a drive for hegemony that ultimately threatens our existence. Lucidly written, thoroughly documented, and featuring a new afterword by the author, Hegemony or Survival is a definitive statement from one of today's most influential thinkers.

The United States is in the process of staking out not just the globe but the last unarmed spot in our neighborhood-the heavens-as a militarized sphere of influence. Our earth and its skies are, for the Bush administration, the final frontiers of imperial control. In Hegemony or Survival, Noam Chomsky investigates how we came to this moment, what kind of peril we find ourselves in, and why our rulers are willing to jeopardize the future of our species.

3 out of 5 stars Connect the dots?.......2007-09-13

This material is not easy to digest in two ways. First, there are so many facts and figures that after a while your head begins to spin. I listened to it twice in succession just for that reason. Secondly, it's difficult to believe that your country's political leaders could possibly be saying one thing and doing another. Aren't we, the US, always the "good guys"? Don't we always do things the right way, "the American way"? Maybe that is a problem. Perhaps other nations want to do things their own way.
If you wonder why so much of the world dislikes or even hates the US, then this book will offer bountiful explanations, dating back to probably the Monroe Doctrine in the first part of the nineteenth century. Whether or not you agree with Mr. Chomsky's conclusions is up to you, but to refute him you will have a lot of offered facts to overcome.
Previous reviewers have labeled him a communist, or at the least, a communist sympathizer. I didn't get that impression. He just doesn't like American interventionist foreign policy which supposedly is leading to a New World Order, with the US the undisputed leader. And a lot of other people in the world think the same way and don't like it either.
If even a small portion of what he writes is true, it's a sad situation in my eyes. But if you consider the facts and connect the dots...where does it lead? Make up your own mind.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Dr. Chomsky.......2007-09-10

The most insightful look at the past 60 some odd years of american foreign policy, it's consequences and possible motives. A thouroughly researched and meticulously catalogued breakdown of the views and voices that have been there every step of the way, the voices that are usualy silenced and swallowed up by the historical accounts of the victors.

4 out of 5 stars Chomsky poses the compelling question of our time.......2007-08-28

Other reviews have covered, at length, the perceived pros and cons of Chomsky's critique of American foreign policy in general and of the war in Iraq in particular, and I will reveal from the outset that my conclusions on these topics are simliar to Chomsky's in many respects. The incredible value of this book, however, is that seeks to address the question of human survival within the context of American foreign policy.

Although Chomsky does not delve deeply into the topic of the pending petroleum crisis, it, as well as other questions regarding the future of industrial civilization, is never too far beneath the surface. According to geologists of the Hubbard school, the world has reached or will soon reach a point of peak oil production after which the ability of global production to meet demand will inevitably decline, leading to a global crisis of unprecedented proportions. To the extent that U.S. policy continues along the lines of exerting hegemonic control over what is left as opposed to engaging in principled and collective effort towards creating a more equitable post-petroleum global economy, it certainly does lead us towards destruction or at the very least, a nightmarish Hobbesian existence in which human lives will indeed be "nasty, brutish and short".

One may choose to agree or disagree with many of Chomsky's arguments. However, for any thinking person who is conversant with history and who has an interest in social justice for all and not just for some, Chomsky drives home a number of points that are practically unassailable:

                                      1. U.S. foreign policy, like the policies of great powers before it, have rarely been predicated on the publicly espoused principles of democracy, equality and freedom, but in the pursuit of its elite's interests, often to the detriment of the environment, democracy itself, and of the well-being of working and oppressed people around the world as well as within the United States. The unprecedented ability of modern man to destroy not only each other, but the very environment that makes sustainable existence on Earth possible however, dictates that unlike any empire or imperial age before it, the consequences of American policy are truly global in scope, and they may prove to be beyond any conceivable ability of repair.

                                      2. The phenomenon of "globalizaton", in practice, has benefited, for the most part, only the financial elites and the military and technocratic elements whose services are necessary to maintain the system. For the rest of humanity, globalization has come to mean a nightmare of economic and cultural disruption and dislocation on a global scale. It is interesting to note that with the advent of globalization, the gap between the rich and poor has increased significantly, not only on a global scale but within the individual economies of the wealthiest nations as well. Lenin's "aristocracy of labor" is shrinking as we speak!

                                      3. Despite the fact that the U.S. can justifiably be seen as the world's only military superpower, its attempts to exert unilateral control over the dwindling energy resources of the Middle East (and by extension of the rest of the world) will increasingly lead it into escalating conflict with other nations and peoples, resulting not only in its own moral, political and economic bankruptcy, but potentially in the destruction of civilization as we know it.

                                      4. Only by understanding the nature of the current situation and organizing to change course can Americans and other people around the world prevent this continuing descent into madness.

Regardless of one's ideological inclination, "Hegemony or Survival" should provoke readers to serious thought on these matters, and for that Professor Chomsky should be thanked and applauded.

5 out of 5 stars Another mandatory reading for those who wish to understand the world. .......2007-07-27

The writing has Chomsky's typical laser-like clarity. The facts are abundant and irrefutable. The arguments are powerful and inescapable. A refreshing break from all the propaganda and indoctrination that cover the landscape.

                                      5 out of 5 stars disturbing revelations.......2007-07-05

I hated how the book made me feel but it gets 5 stars for its brutal edification - as I'm sure was his intent.

Whatever your politics are, and regardless of whether you dislike or disbelieve Chomsky's conclusions, the facts laid out in this book speak disturbingly for themselves. Our government consistently pays lip service to supporting and promoting democracy but apparently has a nasty track record to the contrary. I would sincerely rather that not be true but there it is in the historical record. As stated by another reviewer, his facts are correct.

I could only read this book a little at a time. I would get too angry and have to set it aside for a few days until I could handle some more ugly truth.

I always thought Bush's statement that the terrorists "hate us because of our freedoms" did not quite ring true. In light of our government's actions reported in this book, the statement becomes absurdly transparent misinformation.

At least now we know the REAL reasons why they hate us.
