this book is a very useful guide. i am a junior designer and i appreciate the details and stories that are provided for the logos in this book. whats just as important as the final project, is the process a designer goes thru to achieve the end result. this book does a good job at providing insight to that conceptual process.

I love this book, and refer to it often. It has tons of logo illustrations, along with the idea behind the design of the logo. Some logos even include the brainstorm/mockup sketches that were made to show to the client, so you know what was going through the designer's head. It is so great to see how other designers think. It also has timelines that go through certain logos that have been around a very long time, and shows the changes that they've gone through. A must-have for anyone who wants to try logo design.

Design Trumps Function?.......2007-03-11
For a design book, it would be fabulous except for the fact that you need a magnifying glass in order to read it (what appears to be 5pt type set in gray). For this reason, when design and layout of the book negates the purpose (function) of the book, it is rendered useless. Rockport is well known for its beautiful graphic design books, but I have noticed several of their other titles also designed this way. Sorry I bought it, sold it for a loss.
Almost unreadable.......2007-02-02
Most of the type in this book has been done using a size 6 Font which as far as I am concerned makes it practically unreadable. The content may be great, but I can't tell as I refuse to ruin my eyes trying to read type this small. It remainds me of the disclaimers that advertisers use at the bottom so you can't read them. Unless you absolutely must have this book, I would strongly advise finding another one

Great for Big City Designers, but not for me.......2007-01-22
I produce newsletters for non-profit's on a true shoestring budget. I am constantly searching for inspiration that is do-able on a shoestring budget (no color, no fancy paper, no long-winded discussions about the "role" of the designer - "sheesh") but found literally nothing in this book helpful to me, that makes the book worth keeping on my shelf.
If you have big budgets and staff, this book might be useful for you.
When going with two colors is a "challenge" you know that the designers whose work is being held up as the best of design really have no clue about the challenges faced by those working for needy but worthwhile agencies who cannot afford to hire "designers" but need to get information out, and attempt to do so in a visually pleasing and accessible way.

Unreadable.......2007-02-06
If you are looking for a book that you can read, study and learn from, keep looking. The type in this book is so unbelieveably small as to make it practically unreadable. If you thought that the old "Small print at the bottom of the page" was small, you should see this book. My advice, avoid it like the Plauge!

What can I say about this book, except that it changed my life........2006-03-25
Rarely are we ever exposed to a conundrum so profound, and so challenging that it shatters our very intellectual and spiritual foundations. Events such as these must be embraced and appreciated, for the revolution that we see in ourselves, in our minds and hearts, is fleeting and special.
Bob Grant's masterpiece, "Rockin' Mandolin" is one such enigma. The premise: That a mandolin, an instrument closely associated with "Deliverance-esk" culture, normally played in a band consisting of a Mouth-Harp player, a whistling Jug player, washboard percussionist, and more recently the fiddle (a poorly tuned violin), could be used successfully in conjunction with modern electrified instruments to complete a "rock" band.
In prima facia, the idea is ludicrous, it would be like a inviting a soiled hobo to an evening at the opera. Such was my mistake, my nearsighted, knee jerk reaction to the tinny and bright sounds of a mandolin. My intolerance blinded me to the reality; that the mandolin could truly be an integral part of modern rock bands.
Acceptance isn't always easy. It has taken patience, understanding and faith in a higher power, to overcome my prejudices against this strange combination. But I am a better for it. I am thankful for it.
No one remembers the first man to jelly up his peanut-butter sandwich, or the first man to speak into a telephone. No. These thoughts, ideas, these inventions, these simple combinations stand on their own, long after the lives of their creators are over. They are classic, immortal, and unshattering. Bob Grant may never be remembered for this enigmatic tome, but the sounds of a mandolin combined with the poetry of electric guitar, the thunderous tones of bass, and booming, clanking rhythm of the drums will never be forgotten and will continue to shatter our simple prejudices and blow our minds.

This book treats discovery and invention as processes of knowledge transformation. This process of transformation also covers the way in which scientists persuade and inventors create markets. New discoveries and technologies are not simply the result of organizational agendas and market forces; they are created by human beings who transform both nature and society. One of the goals of this book is to take technological and scientific thinking out of the realm of mystery and give a wider audience the tools to begin to comprehend it. An additional goal is to show how ethics can be used to make certain inventions and discoveries transform the world in a beneficial way. New technologies must be environmentally sustainable and socially just.
Chapter 1 begins with analysis of several cases of discovery, and attempts to make generalizations from them. Chapter 2 combines psychology, sociology and philosophy of science in an effort to determine whether and how science can be studied. Chapter 3 is about invention and the story of the telephone is at the center, with other cases embellishing the discussion. Chapter 4 brings ethics, discovery and invention together in the case of the atomic bomb, then goes on to treat new ethical technologies like the development of a compostable furniture fabric and the introduction of photovoltaics into developing countries. Chapter 5 considers how to teach ethical discovery and invention, and includes a section on the management of discovery and invention.

In February 1941, the German High Command decided to dispatch an expeditionary force to north Africa in support of the Italian forces which were in a difficult situation against the British. This contingent included elements that a few months later were to form the 5th Light Division, and in 1942, the 21st. Panzer-Division.
As the keystone of the Deutsches Afrika Korps, this division was involved in the hardest battles in that theater of operations until it was finally driven out of the continent of Africa along with the rest of the Axis forces in May 1943.

Dissapointing but great photos.......2006-03-18
I was really dissapointed, this book is quite expensive and when I received it it turned out to be in French while the language listing on the amazon webpage says the book is in english! I cannot read french! The only thing that saves it are the absolutely superb photographs in the book and the book is of great material quality. I will keep the book just because of this (and take some french lessons).
Great Photos; Hope U Read French.......2005-05-24
The photos make this book. Many superb shots of the unit in North Africa and, especially, Normandy. The photos of the assault guns (Sturmgeschutz Abt. 200) are outstanding. The text of the book is mostly French. The photos have English captions and there is a section in English (font size 8 or less) on the division's exploits in North Africa and Normandy. Much previously unknown information contained in the text. Panzerjaeger Abt. 200, for instance, was moved from the commanding heights overlooking the British beaches in the early hours of the invasion, presumably to plug a hole in 716th Inf Div's front. If the towed 88mm antitank guns had remained in place, they might have halted the British armor long enough for the division's panzers to enter the fray and crush the beachhead. But the British seized the commanding heights and positioned 17 pounder AT guns on them that stopped the Panzers cold later in the day. Also much new information on Battle Group von Luck. Still, it's a shame the entire book isn't available in English.
Be advised - 90% of it is in French.......2005-01-27
When I initially purchased this book I thought that it was predominently in English. It is not. The book is 90% in French with a small section at the back of the book that has the "Cliff" notes of entire book in English and I was very disappointed in quality (and quantity) of the English notes. The entire part when the 21st Panzer Division was destroyed fighting on the Eastern Front in the waning days of the war is not found anywhere in the English version. The only saving grace was that there are both English and French captions for the numerous pictures. This is one reason I kept the book (I do not know French) the other that I got it at a significant discount from retail. The pictures are very good with many that are not published.

In his previous work, A CONFLICT OF VISIONS, Thomas Sowell explored the issue of why people often tend to agree with the same people on seemingly distinct social and political issues. If a woman advocates generous welfare benefits, abortion on demand and preferential policies for blacks to compensate for the legacy of slavery, where do you think she stands on gun control? Yeah, maybe you will be wrong if you say she advocates strict gun control, but probably not.
As Sowell explained, the reason for this is because of the visions that people have about the world in which they live. Those with the constrained vision view humans as inherently very limited in what we can do and accomplish and advocate those social structures that allow us to best cope with such limitations. Those with the unconstrained vision view people as far more capable of achieving certain favorable ideals and goals, if only such limitations were not imposed upon us preventing us from doing so.
In THE VISION OF THE ANOINTED, Sowell explores the unconstrained vision further. This vision is predominant in the intellectual and political elite and often involves attitudes and opinions that are simply taken for granted. Whereas A CONFLICT OF VISIONS is more academic in tone (if one did not know Sowell himself was one with the constrained vision, one probably would not have gleaned it from the text), THE VISION OF THE ANOINTED is more polemical and ideological. Although that makes for a more fun read for the red meat crowd, it makes for a work of lesser importance in Sowell's oeuvre on ideas.
Early in the book Sowell makes it clear that the anointed vision is predominant not because it is empirically correct, but because it provides its visionaries with a sense of being on the moral high ground compared to the benighted others. The most important feature of the book, the one that has certainly stayed with me the longest and made the deepest impression, is Sowell's analysis of the irrelevance of evidence to those with this vision. As Sowell correctly points out, history is filled with people screaming from the sidelines that a society is about to hit the wall. Yet some mechanism within the vision itself prevents negative feedback from entering the ideological loop.
A comparison of the anointed vision with the benighted vision is provided as a refresher on the subject and example after example is provided as to how a vision of society in desperate need of the anointed's special insight leads to a worsening of the situation. The crusades of the anointed cover a wide ground, from protecting everyone from themselves with strict safety measures imposed on society, to eradication of racism and sexism, to seeking the root causes of crime. In each case, we can, so the vision goes, do so much more to help and even change our fellow man. In each case, however, more people are ultimately harmed, either directly through the recidivism of criminals or more indirectly, such as through the slow erosion of our ability to govern ourselves rather than have a non-elected judiciary impose its will on us.
Sowell seems to letting off a lot of personal steam in this book, again making it a more enjoyable but less substantive work than A CONFLICT OF VISIONS. But that is all relative. A lesser work by Sowell is still head and shoulders above almost anything else out there, except better books by Sowell himself. Any dispassionate reader will get an awful lot of insight out of THE VISION OF THE ANOINTED.

I have never read a book that taught me so much. It teaches how to think clearly about law, economics and social policy. It is worthy to be spoken of in the same tradition as Adam Smith and Edmund Burke: a classic.
Great Data based book.......2007-06-12
I read this book several years ago and have bought several copies for friends and relatives. Dr. Sowell takes a data based rational look at many of our cultural problems that plague us today and things that "Great Society" thinkers have done and the impact on the basic problem. I find myself reviewing Dr. Sowell's conclusions and data several times a year. I have read many of his books and am a great admirer of his work- instead of platitudes and bumper sticker messages- he looks critically at issues and what the data tells us.
If you are reading a book to confirm your "opinions" Dr. Sowell may disappoint you, especially if you have a "liberal" world view. However, if you are willing to examine your beliefs and see what the data says he is a great resource. Unlike many current culture books, I find him insightful, entertaining and very rational. I haven't been bored by any of his works.

Government, Explained. .......2007-03-25
I have read Thomas Sowell's columns for many years, but was not prepared for the full brilliance of his mind which is emphatically on display throughout the pages of The Vision of the Anointed. The four stages of his "Pattern of Failure" are timeless. Certainly they apply to our current situation as Al Gore, in his speech before Congress the other day, embodies it in its strictest sense. Here Sowell enlightens us as to the true nature of the self-righteous leftist; a person who believes himself "anointed" while all the rest of us are inferiors by comparison. Those who disagree with our self-proclaimed elites are not only dupes, they are evil. Theirs is a shallow, theatrical world of Manichean "truth." They despise statistics and any level of proof unless they find a way to manipulate it in the name of misguided social engineering. The Residual Fallacy is something that I have never seen explained as well as it is here and I thank Mr. Sowell for taking the time to flesh it out. Our polity is much better off due to his formulating his thoughts and publishing them.
