Book Description
"Male Desire entertains, stimulates, seduces, enlightens: it is the perfect art history course, slide after delicious slide, with piquant, smart commentary." -Wayne Koestenbaum
Examining the history of homoeroticism in American art, Male Desire surveys how the male body has been portrayed for the last century and a half. From the academic-style paintings of Thomas Eakins in the 19th century to Félix González-Torres's conceptual works in the "age of AIDS," this fascinating book by the well-known art historian Jonathan Weinberg highlights specific artists while illuminating the artistic and cultural contexts in which they worked.
Accompanying Weinberg's engaging text are 170 compelling images of the male physique by such artists as George Bellows, Marsden Hartley, Paul Cadmus, Andy Warhol, and Robert Mapplethorpe, works that address the theme of the homoerotic in vivid and often contentious ways. While they range widely in style and content, these artworks all share a quality of excess in the way they represent the male figure. Sexy, beautiful, edgy, and thought provoking, this important book is a must-have for every art-book collection, as well as the library of every gay man.
AUTHOR BIO: Jonathan Weinberg, Ph.D., is a painter and art historian. He is a recipient of a 2002 Guggenheim Fellowship and is currently a fellow of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. His paintings are in many important collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Weinberg lives in Connecticut.

Compelling........2006-08-05
Jonathan Weinberg's MALE DESIRE: THE HOMOEROTIC IN AMERICAN ART, like his two earlier books SPEAKING FOR VICE: HOMOSEXUALITY IN THE ART OF CHARLES DEMUTH, MARSDEN HARTLEY, AND THE FIRST AMERICAN AVANT-GARDE (1993) and AMBITION AND LOVE IN MODERN AMERICAN ART (2001), demonstrates the extent to which same-sex desire animates American visual culture. That the book's premise should not be widely taken as self-evident reveals the extent to which interpretive perspectives sensitive to the nuances of homoeroticism remain marginalized. Weinberg's analysis of a broad range of visual sources--from fine art to popular culture--is carefully contextualized, tightly conceived, and unfailingly convincing. As a writer, he expresses complex concepts in a voice that is both direct and clear. I highly recommend this book, which makes a unique contribution to the fields of visual studies, gender/sexuality studies, and American history, while exploring critical intersections among them.
Excellent survey of gay male imagery in American culture.......2006-08-05
"Male Desire" is an excellent work of synthesis, marking a new plateau in the development of queer cultural studies. It gathers enormous amounts of previously scattered material about gay artists, as well as gay writers and other cultural figures, from Walt Whitman to the present -- and sometimes even identifies images by non-gay artists that have some gay interest. Weinberg has a knack for pithy phrases and metaphors, which help to organize his material both chronologically and thematically, and as a painter himself he is capable of good visual analysis and unusual, thought-provoking connections between very diverse types of art. All future writers on American gay culture will have to acknowledge and reckon with his broad conceptual framework.
Great book.......2006-08-04
I highly recommend this book. Visually beautiful and attractive, the book is also textually insightful. It's a book to enjoy with no need to get entangled in academic debates.
What is wrong with the reviewer below ? A bad hair day? Jealous maybe he will not be able to write such an amazing book..........2006-08-03
Male Desire is a BEAUTIFUL book. Not only are the pictures well chosen and hardly seen before, but the text is intelligent and powerful. A book for the mind and the senses that EVERYBODY should own.

Re: "Beautiful" Images of Men -- But Academically Unsound and Lazy.......2006-06-04
Jonathan Weinberg does do a rather good job in showing "us" the (homo)erotic images he likes, and he attempts to justify this -- though what one likes needs NO justification -- via a very base and banal working-knowledge of the complexities of queer theories.
Though I do find many of the images "beautiful," erotic, and disruptive (in interesting ways), I am, however, left with a deep disappointment in how "queer" or "gay" (the two are NOT isomorphic) theories and tactics have become so commodified over the past several years.
It is also, rather tasteless, I think, to have Weinberg include his own "paintings" in his book, this is rather ... well ... there is no "appropriate" word/s I can use; I, guess, just a disappointment for/of "queer" and "gay" artwork and scholarship, which has become fully commodified, sadly. And, in reality, as "they" say, Weinberg has no problem in this continued commodification - his book is a material manifestation of what the last sentence claimed.
As a brief aside, 0r maybe a central point, it is important to note, understand, communicate to people, that just because they have painting materials, this DOES NOT MEAN that they need to share their paintings. Also, just because one has an idea for a book, this DOES NOT mean that the book needs to be materialized.
I know that am being very critical, and, sadly, without the time to go into specific details, so I would suggest that one buy the book -- it wont kill you and may disagree with me -- BUT, honestly, I would not expect anything more from it than the same: the run-of-the-mill "homoerotic" books that have flooded the art/book market. I think we don't need any more for a while, but that's my humble opinion.

Book Description
The Strokes arrived on the scene surrounded by rumor and myth but they also made a blistering album - Is This It - and left no one in any doubt that rock `n' roll is alive and well and living in New York City. Their album subsequently won the NME Album of the Year award.
Julian, Fabrizio, Albert, Nick and Nikolai had built the group in the painstaking way their 70s and 80s heroes used to, and after a few false starts, The Strokes proved themselves to be a band with the look, the sound, the attitude, and above all, the talent. In this first biography of The Strokes, Martin Roach lifts the lid on a phenomenon that the media raved about but didn't create. As manufactured pop idols multiply, The Strokes are the real deal.

Book Description
In this important and stylish book, Michel Maffesoli argues that it is impossible to reduce knowledge to a conception of science inherited from the nineteenth century. Instead, he argues, we must go beyond intellectual conformities based on limited and archaic moral or political foundations. This approach emphasizes the growing importance of information and communication in modern societies.Maffesoli suggests that sociologists have too often succumbed to the positivist fascination of analytical formalism and dualistic thinking. Rather than viewing society as a finished product, he develops an approach which seeks to analyse, in all their nuances and contradictions, the new forms of social life - particularly everyday life - which are beginning to emerge in the late twentieth century. A timely contribution to current debates, Ordinary Knowledge will be welcomed by students and researchers in sociology and social theory.

Book Description
Ten deeply moving oral histories reveal the memories and hopes of individuals who have been actively involved in or personally affected by the struggle for labor rights in Guatemala. The speakers include rank-and-file activists, labor organizers, indigenous leaders, and the widows of unionists who were assassinated or disappeared. They speak as veterans of the struggle and as recent recruits, as willing participants and as inadvertent victims. One is a child. Together, their testimonies give personal immediacy to the anguish and the glory of the Guatemalan labor movement.

Customer Reviews:
A seminal work by a master historian.......2002-10-19
The author is an eminent military scholar and this work, first published in 1976, still gives readers an accurate and comprehensive introduction to its subject. Chandler has a nice command of the English language, is thoroughly versed in the details and arcana of the technical aspects of the military art of the age he writes of, and places the subject of the book very adeptly into the context of the times, with appropriate nods to politics, economics, and the cultural ethos. He further offers good insights into the influence of the preceding era's style of warfare on that practised in the age of Marlborough, as well as giving an idea of the impact of Marlborough's period on the subsequent evolvement of warfare later in the 18th century.
As in any work of synthesis, Chandler's work cannot replace primal sources such as drill manuals, letters, diaries, memoirs, etc., from participants in the warfare he covers. Nor should it be read in expectation of giving a book-length treatment to any one battle or campaign -- Chandler is clearly painting with a broader brush in hope of giving us the big picture, albeit one that gives enough detail to stand magnified scrutiny.
Those who come to the subject via Chandler's work may well be intrigued enough to delve into more narrowly-oriented works on specific arms, units, battles or campaigns. Those whom want a good slice more of the reality of the age than the decent but very, very brief overviews offered by, say, the Osprey series cannot go wrong with either a used or reprint version of this book. Let those who cavil at its quality offer a list of more complete, accurate and pleasurable books covering the same topic in the same fine but broad manner.
General information that does not offer new insights.......1999-11-10
Chandler's treatment of this period of warfare falls far short of what other histories and studies offer. Thus, it should be viewed as a general guide ONLY, and to serve as a basic framework from which the reader can further pursue this subject.
Yet Another Bumper Information Harvest from Chandler.......1998-06-19
Informative, entertaining and well organized, The Art of Warfare in the Age of Marlborough is an essential work for anyone interested in the European military art of the early 18th century. The book includes detailed comparisons (including diagrams in many cases) of the competing tactical systems used by infantry and cavalry of the day; in addition, there is extensive material on artillery technoloogy and employment as well as engineering and siegecraft. The individual fortunate enough to own this work, Nosworthy's *Anatomy of Victory,* and Christopher Duffy's various volumes (alas, many are currently out of print--strong arguments for publishing-on-demand) will know about as much about 18th-century warfare in Europe as any layman really needs to know.
Book Description
It's past time to expose the truth about religion myths, frauds, fantasies and fiction from End-times to Virgin Birth to Sun Worship. Now into its 3rd printing. A Best-seller. This popular anthology tells it all, the textbook of Freethought, edited by Tim C. Leedom.
Customer Reviews:
Third Purchase.......2007-09-19
This is the third time that I purchased this book - I seem to either give it away to a friend to read or it's borrowewd and not returned. Nevertheless - I still use this book to further my personal studies concerning freethinking and personal growth. I have researched other articles that some of the authors have wrote and found other informations that I found informative. Highly recommended.
Book seems unedited........2007-08-14
The information contained in this book is interesting (and useful in debates), but it appears the the book was assembled without the participation of an editor, much less two. There are numerous errors of the type that would be caught by an actual copy editor, but missed by a computer spell checker. Some words are obviously incorrect, though the correct one can be inferred from context. In a large, well-edited book one, maybe two typographical errors might be expected. But there are numerous such errors in this text.
I rated the book 4 stars for content, but its editors should have expunged their names.
What Might Have Been.......2007-08-09
I call this "the book that might have been". I approach the Judeo-Christian tradition, in which I was raised, with respect. By this, I mean that, as a mature, thoughtful adult, I want to assess and understand both its strengths and its limitations. When I read a book like this one, I hope to be illuminated. Ah, blasted hope!
This is the second edition of the book. According to its editors, a "few mistakes have been corrected." Unfortunately, many more, often irritating mistakes have been overlooked. For example, Mohammad's dates are given as 570-632 B.C.E., rather than C.E. (p.75). God supposedly approaches Mohammed in 610 B.C.E., rather than C.E. (p.78). The Assassins are active circa 1092 B.C.E., rather than C.E. (p.83). Or, for example, "Flood" is spelled, variously, "Hood" (p.135), and "Rood" (p.138). These may seem trivial, but anyone who purports to represent the contrarian view had better employ the "Caesar's wife" standard of editing. Anything less undercuts the claim to be taken seriously.
More substantively, the book is a mixed bag of screeds and rants, interspersed with bright spots. Let me take one of the better instances of the former.
A purported "Bible scholar" quotes somebody's translation of John 7:37-38 (p.132), the "living water" analogy, claims that the intended citation to the Old Testament is: "out of his heart will flow rivers of living water", and then claims that no such statement is found in the Old Testament. The purpose of the quote is to undercut the commonly-held Christian belief in prophecy-fulfillment as a lynchpin of faith. The claim, though true, is tendentious and, therefore, irrelevant.
The point of the passage in John is to bring the "living water" analogy into the context of Jesus as the source of human salvation. This image is found in four places in the Old Testament: Song of Solomon 4:15, Jeremiah 2:13 and 17:13, and Zechariah 14:8. The author of the purported refutation fails to see that, in John, the placement of the phrase "as the Scripture has said" is a redactor's or translator's choice. The sentence could as easily have been: "Out of his heart will flow, as the Scriptures have said, rivers of living water." By the way, the full image in Jeremiah is "fountain of living waters", a reference to God.
So, it is worthless, at least in this case, to quote a passage from the New Testament, read into it a prophecy without critical analysis of the text, and then show that no such prophecy exists in the Old Testament, all in an effort to refute the belief in prophecy-fulfillment. Even the fundamentalist claim, that the Bible is the literal word of God, has more bite than this sort of method affects. Any numbskull can see that the Bible is a composite of texts, including different versions of the same story, with contradictions and inconsistencies to be expected. But pointing this out does not refute either the literalist claim, or the more generalized belief. The answer to the type of attack described above is that the word of God, like the "fountain of living waters", runs clear and pure under the text, and that it is the duty of scholars, ministers, and serious students to dig down to where the waters are.
The book pretty much goes downhill from here. The brightest spot is the article by Gerald Larue, "Locating Jesus in Time, Space and Archaeology." It stands out in high relief, both on its own merits, and by contrast with other articles, as an example of what biblical scholarship should be. It is too bad that this was not the editorial lodestar for the rest of the book.
Great Book and great condition.......2007-03-09
What an unbelievable book. this what I read in different books and other places. it put somethings together for me
Confronting Blind Faith.......2006-11-20
This book is not for the faint of heart, religiously speaking. This is not a book for those who are reluctant to read with an open mind. It is not a book for those who do not want to challenge their own beliefs and religious viewpoints. It is, however, a book for those who want and need to understand the reality of religious teachings. It is a book for those who are not afraid to consider freethought, that is, reaching conclusions based on evidence and common sense, rather than dogma.
That being said, this book is a mindblower. It is a collection of essays by world renowned historians, researchers and theologians, who present the reader with a truck load of propositions against the existence of God.
Such propositions are enough to set off uncontrollable anger because most people have been taught to believe in some form of God, despite any hard evidence. Our religious beliefs are based on Bible stories, myth and dogma, not on scientific evidence.
This book is a hard hitting, sometimes disturbing, yet logical and scientific presentation of facts against the existence of a God. It is organized into sections on specific topics, such as the Origins of Religion, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Bible, Jesus, and Doctrine, to name a few.
The intent of the book is to show the reader the obvious, and compelling weak points of religious doctrine and dogma.
Consider the fact that Christians around the world celebrate Christmas on Dec 25th, the date they believe is the birth date of Jesus Christ. In reality, this date was the Roman celebration of the winter solstice. There is no evidence that Christ was born on this date, or even close to it. Along with this, St. Francis of Assisi is credited with the creation of the first Nativity scene in 1223. He invented this scene as a teaching tool. In other words, the Nativity scene is not based on fact, but is simply a human invention to illustrate a point of view.
The above is a mild example of what the reader will find in this book. Most of the examples are far more provocative. Take, for instance, the fact that Jesus Christ was not the only Messiah to live on earth. There are about fifty-one such Messiahs who were all born of virgins, came to earth to save mankind, were crucified and then rose from the dead. The Egyptian God, Horus, lived on earth and said and did all the things that Jesus said and did. The life of Horus, however, was recorded 1000 years before the birth of Christ.
This book is a tough read in the sense that it challenges the reader to think for himself. It forces the reader to look at facts long repressed by religious leaders. It encourages the reader to consider scientific facts that fly in the face of blind faith. Myths, half truths and convoluted dogma are tossed out the window in this provocative book.
The reader may go away from this book without any major change in personal beliefs. Religious beliefs, after all, are deeply ingrained. But at the very least, the reader will be encouraged to think and reason, even if only for the length of time it takes to read this book. That alone, is no small matter.
