Manufactured Landscapes
ASIN: 0300099436 |
Book Description
Over the past twenty-five years, the internationally renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky has been an explorer of unfamiliar places where human activity has reshaped the surface of the land. His astonishing large-scale color photographs of the landscapes of mining, quarrying, railcutting, recycling, oil refining, and shipbreaking uncover a stark, almost sublime beauty in the residue of industrial "progress." The implicit social and environmental upheavals that underlie these images make them powerful emblems of our times. This handsome catalogue of the first major retrospective of Burtynsky's work features essays by Lori Pauli, Kenneth Baker, and Mark Haworth-Booth, as well as a wide-ranging interview with the artist by Michael Torosian. The book includes sixty-four color plates.
Customer Reviews:
mixed emotions...........2007-07-27
I am a great admirer of Edward Burtynsky - and I will not hide my dissapointment with the book. I've seen an exibition "Manufactured Landscapes" twice, and have to say that reproductions in the album are of a poor quality, not to mention that at least in this particular case size does really matter...
The album is good to have a general idea about the author, his work and his workshop (nice introduction, and interview with Edward Burtynsky - that's what I've missed from the exibitions) but if you haven't seen full-size prints before, do not buy this book - otherwise it might spoil your opinion about one of the best photographers ever...
Art & patience.......2007-06-08
I discovered Ed Burtynsky by chance when waiting for my dentist...
It was a chock : over its technical knowledge, this guy is capable to find the perfect angle to show what he wants to show !
as we say in France "respect !"
manufactured landscapes.......2006-03-16
the reproductions in the book were awful. i had seen his exhibition and purchased th e book because of it. the reproductions were not any where up to the originals. i am a photographer and the book is useless to me.

Manufactured Landscapes.......2006-02-27
I viewed the original exhibition at the National Arts Gallery in Ottawa a few years back. The images are breathtaking, unnerving and awe inspiring.
Manufactured, indeed..........2005-12-02
The New York Times reviewed EB's recent exhibition and called his work "large, sumptuous and numbingly clichéd color pictures" and called his motives "high-minded". The reviewer went on to say "One of the problems with Mr. Burtynsky's photography is that he uses the same pumped-up pictorial rhetoric of shock and awe in almost every one of the more than 60 works on view. This produces a monotonous effect and, what's worse, a loss of representational credibility. By applying the same compositional formula to every subject, from California tire dumps to new buildings in China, Mr. Burtynsky hammers away at the idea of the global proliferation of industrial production, destruction and waste. But he leaves out a lot of information, too." -and went on to say "Mr. Burtynsky's photographic vision is closer to that of National Geographic magazine. Though technically impressive and, because of its scale, important-seeming, it offers nothing about photography or about the world that we have not already seen in the works of countless other proficient, globe-trotting photojournalists whose names have faded into the oblivion of artistic mediocrity." This observer concurs.

Croghan from London Ohio.......2007-07-07
This was a very nice book for its price I do not think that the illustrations were the artist best illustrations and the colors were not of the quality that I expected. It was very heavy on illustration but very light on explanation. It's still is a very good book for beginners but for those who have painted a while it was rather lacking in information and quite honestly needed more. For the beginner I would recommend this book for those of you who have been painting for a few years I would not.

Book Description
Breeding is a beautifully printed and bound collectors slip-cased edition of some of Rankin's finest black and white portraits.
Rankin is well known as a prolific fashion and advertising photographer as well as for high profile projects such as Celebritation and Nudes. In Breeding, one of Rankin's private projects, he shows his subtlety and depth.
Here the images are contemplative and questioning. The inherent androgyny of many of the models is exaggerated, passing simple comment on human sexuality and how it is represented.
Models include Kate Moss and Helena Christensen.

Customer Reviews:
in a previous I was in hysterics at an art opening.......2002-05-19
This is a book of very morbid hilarity. It also exudes an amount of contrarianism. Do it. Buy it. Let yourself laugh.
I Was Wrong!.......2000-07-26
In my earlier review (below) I stated that Adam Green's book "What were you in a previous life?" was no longer available...apparently it IS available now. I bow before the publishing gods...THANK YOU for bringing this book back! Now that it IS available, I suggest that everyone buy one or two copies. If you already have it, they make great gifts! If you have any doubts about just HOW funny this book is, read the reviews. You won't be disappointed...unless you're completely humorless and dead inside.
We Should All Weep..........1999-12-24
We should all weep, because most people are too stupid to appreciate Adam Green's fine sense of humor. Due to these fine individuals not buying this brilliant book, it is now out of print. I am sad. Fortunately Adam's other book, the Book of Hollow Days is still available, and every bit as funny. If you don't own any Adam Green yet, you owe it to yourself to find some of his work. You will laugh until you are in severe pain.
Very dark, Very funny.......1999-06-03
As a number of the other reviews noted, this collection is not for everyone. But, if jokes about torn puppies, monitoring your friends for hints of suicide, and dog vomit are your cup o' tea, then this book is for you.
One of the funniest books I've ever read.
Funniest book i've ever read.......1998-02-28
I second all the opinions of this book. I got it for a birthday present when it first came out and now I loan it out to my friends since they can't find it. Every time i re-read it I find myself still laughing out loud. If you like bizarre, wickedly funny humor, this book _cannot_ be beaten!

Book Description
The intimate chronicle of one of our leading composers and writers.
Ned Rorem is celebrated as one of America's greatest living composers. His diary of his early years, The Paris Diary & The New York Diary, was widely acclaimed. The Later Diaries continues one of the most sustained efforts in the intimate journal form ever undertaken and offers candid insights into his astonishing life, career, art, friendships, and love. In these years, Lions, Miss Julie, and Poems of Love and the Rain were composed and most of his books written; he also continued to meet the famous and infamous and to write of them with the charm that Janet Flanner characterized as "worldly, intelligent, licentious, highly indiscreet."

Book Description
Transformation in the Writing, A Case of Surrender-and-Catch further develops the concepts first presented in Surrender and Catch (1976) and applied to sociology and its history in Survival and Sociology (1991) and autobiography in O Loma! (1989). This idea involves the recognition of the unprecedented nature of the present time in the history of humankind and the planet, a time when we ourselves, rather than Nature or the Deity, can annihilate both ourselves and our planet. `Surrender' is nonlinguistic (or prelinguistic), `prepredicative', `prephenomenal', and involves suspending or `bracketing' the world, calling it into question. This is the best any individual can do, in view of the point of crisis at which we are now. In Transformation in the Writing Wolff explores how his hypothesis of Surrender(-and-Catch) bears on aspects of autobiography (émigré status, field work), sociology of knowledge, poetry, phenomenology, hermeneutics, critical theory, and on attitudes to our time.

Book Description
In the towering mountains of northern India, a chilling chapter was written in the history of international espionage. After the Chinese detonated their first nuclear test in 1964, America and India, which had just fought a border war with its northern neighbor, were both justifiably concerned. The CIA knew it needed more information on China's growing nuclear capability but had few ways of peeking behind the Bamboo Curtain. Because of the extreme remoteness of Chinese testing grounds, conventional surveillance in this pre-satellite era was next to impossible.
The solution to this intelligence dilemma was a joint American-Indian effort to plant a nuclear-powered sensing device on a high Himalayan peak in order to listen into China and monitor its missile launches. It was not a job that could be carried out by career spies, requiring instead the special skills possessed only by accomplished mountaineers. For this mission, cloaks and daggers were to be replaced by crampons and ice axes.
Spies in the Himalayas chronicles for the first time the details of these death-defying expeditions sanctioned by U.S. and Indian intelligence, telling the story of clandestine climbs and hair-raising exploits. Led by legendary Indian mountaineer Mohan S. Kohli, conqueror of Everest, the mission was beset by hazardous climbs, weather delays, aborted attempts, and even missing radioactive materials that may or may not still pose a contamination threat to Indian rivers.
Kept under wraps for over a decade, these operations came to light in 1978 and have been long rumored among mountaineers, but here are finally given book-length treatment. Spies in the Himalayas provides an inside look at a CIA mission from participants who weren't agency employees, drawing on diaries from several of the climbers to offer impressions not usually recorded in covert operations. A host of photos and maps puts readers on the slopes as the team attempts repeatedly to plant the sensor on a Himalayan summit.
An adventure story as well as a new chapter in the history of espionage, this book should appeal to readers who enjoyed Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air and to anyone who enjoys a great spy story.
This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.
Customer Reviews:
Draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag.......2004-05-02
This book at best can be described as a dragging narration of a poorly planned combined secret mission between CIA and IB (Indian Intelligence Bureau) in the mid 60s. The book goes on and on about things that the mountain climbers had to go through for planting a sensor (actually two or three) on Himalayan peaks for eavesdropping on China. The book probably gains some importance because the loss of one of the sensors made headlines nearly 10 years afterwards due to fear of contamination of the holy Ganges river. The whole story sounds real silly with a lot of money spent for no evident goal. The writer displays some good style, but often the narration goes haywire making the reader wonder where he is being led to.
Mountainclimbing and the CIA!.......2003-07-25
Kohli is a mountaineer from India who led an Everest expedition in 1965 that put nine men on the summit. Conboy is a former Heritage Foundation analyst. Immediately after his 1965 triumph, Kohli was asked to lead a covert mission to place a nuclear-powered sensor on the north face of a remote Himalayan peak to monitor Chinese nuclear tests. The monitor was a joint project of the CIA and its Indian equivalent. Because the placement had to be secret, above 22,000 feet, and in one of the most inhospitable regions of the earth, Kohli assembled a group of highly capable climbers and Sherpa porters. Nothing went easily. Weather and bad luck foiled the first attempt, and in the second attempt the nuclear generator was lost. After many difficulties and two deaths the sensor was placed, then promptly went silent. Another expedition was mounted to replace it. Half Cold War adventure and half mountaineering saga. Amateurishly written, but Kohli's obvious enthusiasm and the excitement of climbing comes through. I liked it.

Book Description
"A work of tremendous originality and insight."Washington Post.
A national bestseller, including extended stays on the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post lists, this major work by Newsweek International editor Fareed Zakaria has been touted by the New York Times as "brave and ambitious...updated Tocqueville" and the Chicago Tribune as "essential reading for anyone worried about the promotion and preservation of liberty."
Democracy has reshaped politics, economics, and culture around the world. This provocative book asks, can you have too much of a good thing?
Today we judge the value of every idea, institution, and individual by one test: is it popular? Or, more practically, do the majority of those polled like it? This transformation has affected not just politics but also business, law, culture, and even religion. Every institution and profession in society must democratize or die. Democracy has gone from being a form of government to a way of life.
Like any broad transformation, however, the trends that democracy unleashes are not uniformly benign. Democracy has its dark sides, yet to question it has been to provoke instant criticism that you are "out of sync" with the times. No more. "Intensely provocative and valuable," according to Business Week, and with an easy command of history, philosophy, and current affairs, The Future of Freedom calls for a restoration of the balance between liberty and democracy and shows how liberal democracy has to be made effective and relevant for our time. Woodrow Wilson said the challenge of the twentieth century was to make the world safe for democracy. This penetrating book challenges us to make democracy safe for the world.

CFR 101 Textbook.......2007-10-17
Hoping some of you 5 star reviewers will consider the following on where Mr Zakaria's ideology originates.
The book is praised by Henry Kissinger - Board Member, Council on Foreign Relations.
The book praises the CFR, Federal Reserve and EU - no debate, the best institutions on the planet.
The book calls for less democracy, not more.
The book is praised by Richard Holbrook - Board Member, Council on Foreign Relations.
Oh, and Mr Zakaria - Board Member, Council on Foreign Relations.
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand his elitist leanings.
Let's give up the vote now or to put it in his words:
"We have decided that although we cannot file our tax forms, write our wills, or configure our computers, we can pass laws ourselves." Pg 247-248
Hope you all like being told what to do if he runs for President one day.
The Optimistic Jew.......2007-08-31
Constitutionalize before you democratize. This is the essential theme of this book, which is destined to become a classic similar to Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America". It is a call for constitutional democracy over Majoritarian democracy. When democracy is adopted before constitutional protections of inalienable individual rights are internalized the result is Hitler in Germany and Hamas in Palestine (both democratically elected). If the thesis of this book had been internalized by American policy makers some of the current mess in Iraq and the rest of the Middle East might have been avoided. The lessons of this book must also be internalized by Israel if Israel's constitutional democracy is to be strengthened in the future (a point I make in my own book "The Optimistic Jew"). This is also a necessity in the globalized age wherein the rapid rate of change requires the ever-growing empowerment of the individual.
Democracy Undressed (aka Exposed).......2007-06-29
Recent history has highlighted the term "Democratization." With the fall of Eastern Bloc socialism and totalitarianism, Francis Fukuyama proclaimed "The End of History." Shortly thereafter, Samuel Huntington described this process as historically happening in "waves." Currently, the word "Democratization" connotes images of American and NATO forces in Afghanistan and Iraq and USAID personnel scattered thorughout the less-devleoped world.
In "The Furture of Freedom," Fareed Zakaria tackles the overwhelming topic of democracy and how the application of the concept has evolved for better or worse both at home and thorughout the world. Specifically, Zakaria explores democracy as a politcal system and how it relates to liberty. According to Zakaria, democracy, to the detriment of the notion itself, is becoming more and more "illiberal" as he calls it. Illiberal democracy lacks real freedoms and is most commonly found in young, democratizing states. According to Zakaria, illiberal democracy is akin to "totalitarian democracy."
One of the most fascinating theories in the book is Zakaria's exploration of what Thomas Carothers (and others) have called democratic "sequencing." In other words, is there a sequential formula that leads to successful liberal democracy, and if so, what is it? In one section of the book entitled "The Wealth of Nations," Zakaria states that "[t]he simplest explanation for a new democracy's political success is its economic success - or, to be more specific, high per capita national income." This notion of "capitalism first, democratization second" is a theme that has garnered tremendous academic attention and is a theory adopted in "The Future of Freedom." Zakaria states that "when countries become democratic at low levels of development, their democracy usually dies." Zakaria posits that the most important factor leading to an enduring democracy is the relative wealth of a country. According to Zakaria and others, wealth is good for liberty because (1) wealth allows key segments of society - the bourgeoisie - to gain power independant of the state, and (2) in bargaining with this bourgeoisie, the state tends to become less rapacious and capricious and more rule-oriented and responsive to society's needs (that is, to the needs of the elite class).
So often, the appeal of "democracy" as a concept is constantly and blindly beaten into our psyches that we often fail to examine what it truly means for a society to be liberally democratic. Another question that is rarely asked is whether pure democracy itself is the ideal political system. Zakaria, in another section of the book and in accordance with Madison and Hamilton, argues that pure democracy is dangerous and that there is such a thing as a the "Tyranny of a Majority."
Ultimately, Fareed Zakaria's book was incredibly illuminating. It is not an exhaustive source on the topic of democracy nor does it stick to one theory and ride it all the way to the end. Zakaria changes gears throughout, but stays true to the notion that human liberty should not be sacrificaed at the "alter of democracy" either at home or as it applies to newly democratizing countries. The book is especially relevant in light of current U.S. foreign policy towards both Iraq and Afghanistanand the rest of the developing world for that matter.
CORE VALUES.......2007-05-13
The Future of Freedom always works at the core issues. NO political correctness here. It treats topics from our Constitution to terror, to the economic issues of Africa. This is a book about global economic politics. If you believe thal all politics is local, and it is about getting trash picked up and the street cleaned, you will not enjoy this book. However, if you are interested, you can learn why a Marshall Plan for the Islamic world is a bad idea.
Cheers,
how to get there from here.......2007-02-09
Mr. Zakaria's key insight is to distinguish between democracy as a process to elect governments, and constitutional liberalism (i.e. the rule of law where individual rights are protected) as a resulting government which citizens want. He then reviews efforts to introduce democracy before consitutional liberalism and the reverse.
This book is very insightful, particularly as we grapple with how to extend the benefits of open societies to other cultures. He also has insights about how to improve our own government, which might be suffering from the ills of democracy sliding into demagoguery. Solution? Like Madison said in the Federalist Papers, get the checks and balances right so tyranny of the majority of the moment doesn't destroy the whole system. Read this one, and I guarantee you will start giving it to your friends.
