Book Description
Recent radical changes in timecode technology, location shooting and post-production working practices have been brought about by the fragmentation of the television programme making industry and by a dramatic increase in affordable digital transmission and editing equipment and systems.
With the expansion of non-traditional television service producers (cable, satellite and video-on-demand) almost anything hoes as far as shooting and editing formats are concerned.
Timecode: A User's Guide is an indispensable reference for anyone needing to get to grips with the many aspects of timecode, whether in-house or on location.
Taking into account these changes this book has now been brought completely up to date to include:
* timecode and DVD, LTC & VITC in HANC packets in the serial digital TV interfaces
* timecode in IEEE1395 (Firewire)
* timecode and digital video cassettes
* new recording formats of DVD, DV mini cassettes and D6 are included
* 4:3 scanning for wide-screen films - standards updated
* new material to cover new working practices
* new appendices to cover the global LF time data transmissions and time data embedded in BBC transmissions
Advice is also given on avoiding and remedying faults and errors.
Comprehensive technical coverage of timecode provides a complete overview of the technology
Have the most up to date information on working practices at your fingertips
Benefit from the expertise and inside knowledge of the author
Customer Reviews:
Not much written about timecode.......2007-06-18
I professionally work in the field of computer based digital video and know that there simply isn't much written about timecode. This book is a great reference, I have used it to successfully implement VITC and LTC encoders/decoders in software, timecode math libraries and the like. This is the book I refer to and recommend when these often confusing topics arise. I have used the first two editions but have not seen the third. I hope it adds more information about digital production.

Book Description
Wired for Sound is the first anthology to address the role of sound engineering technologies in the shaping of contemporary global music. Wired sound is at the basis of digital audio editing, multi-track recording, and other studio practices that have powerfully impacted the world's music. Distinctions between musicians and engineers increasingly blur, making it possible for people around the globe to imagine new sounds and construct new musical aesthetics. This collection of 11 essays employs primarily ethnographical, but also historical and psychological, approaches to examine a range of new, technology-intensive musics and musical practices such as: fusions of Indian film-song rhythms, heavy metal, and gamelan in Jakarta; urban Nepali pop which juxtaposes heavy metal, Tibetan Buddhist ritual chant, rap, and Himalayan folksongs; collaborations between Australian aboriginals and sound engineers; the production of "heaviness" in heavy metal music; and the production of the "Austin sound." This anthology is must reading for anyone interested in the global character of contemporary music technology.
CONTRIBUTORS: Harris M. Berger, Beverley Diamond, Cornelia Fales, Ingemar Grandin, Louise Meintjes, Frederick J. Moehn, Karl Neunfeldt, Timothy D. Taylor, Jeremy Wallach.

A better description - haven't read the book - ignore rating.......2005-02-25
From the publisher:
An anthology of 11 essays is the first to address the role of the sound engineering technologies and practices that shape contemporary world music. The essays look at technologies invented in the west and how they are incorporated by world cultures. It can be argued that new technologies extend western influence and bring about a homogenization of the world musical practices, but such technologies also have the potential to open up new directions for musical expression, empowering people to express their own cultural values.
Wired for Sound challenges assumptions about the use of technology, seeking to move beyond the false dichotomy of "creative" musicians and "mechanical" sound engineers. The essays demonstrate how technologies create new possibilities for responding to a popular audience, for fulfilling artistic aims, and recreating traditional music.
Topics covered in the book include fusions of Indian film-song rhythms; heavy metal and gamelan in Jakarta; urban Nepali pop, which juxtaposes heavy metal, Tibetan Buddhist ritual chant, rap, and Himalayan folksongs; collaborations between Australian aboriginals and sound engineers; the production of "heaviness" in heavy metal music; and the production of the "Austin sound."

There are great music books, great books about music and this. This book is THE bible of music and technology. It is an instant classic. I picked this book up not knowing anything about Paul Greene or hearing any buzz. After an afternoon of reading, I am going to a create a course so that I can use this book.
Really, it is THAT good!

Book Description
The representation of organizations and working life in popular media signifies--but also helps shape-- contemporary practice and institutions. The studies presented in Organization/Representation unravel the complex social relationship between organization and its representation, offering new insights into the interaction between the popular images we create and receive and the power relations that govern society, working life, and culture. The volume shows how the boundaries between each of the categories are blurred to the extent that it is misleading to make assumptions about where "representation" begins and "organization" ends. Rich insights are offered into the relations between gender, power and work, and how the popular media--in which they are represented--may function as a two-way mirror. The different media of cinema, documentary film, childrenÆs literature, and even the cyber-world of computerized image, replicate the power structures they are supposed to describe and may help create or at least shape contemporary realities. Several of the contributors to the volume end by questioning some of the basic ontological distinctions between "fiction" and "reality." Critical analysis of the relationship between popular culture and organizational life enhances our understanding of both. Scholars, researchers and students of organizational theory, sociology of organization, cultural studies, and gender and organization will find a rich source of case examples and illustration, together with the challenging perspective of a new frame of inquiry.

Book Description
This fascinating book demonstrates how popular culture is a compelling arena for the critique of organizational life, one that plays out the complex and contradictory relations that people have with the organizations in which they work.
Given the ubiquity of representations of organizations in popular culture, Rhodes and Westwood examine those cultural narratives that provide a critical interrogation of the experience of work and organizations in contemporary society. Overall, the book opens up new possibilities for how to understand organizations and their relationship with society by articulating critical management with the critique in culture. Focusing specifically on the media of cinema, television and music, Rhodes and Westwood approach popular culture in the spirit of its resistance, carnivalization, critique and rebellion.

Book Description
Military and defense-related procurement has been an important source of technology development across a broad spectrum of industries that account for an important share of United States industrial production. In this book, the author focuses on six general-purpose technologies: interchangeable parts and mass production; military and commercial aircraft; nuclear energy and electric power; computers and semiconductors; the INTERNET; and the space industries. In each of these industries, technology development would have occurred more slowly, and in some case much more slowly or not at all, in the absence of military and defense-related procurement. The book addresses three questions that have significant implications for the future growth of the United States economy. One is whether changes in the structure of the United States economy and of the defense-industrial base preclude military and defense-related procurement from playing the role in the development of advanced technology in the future, comparable to the role it has played in the past. A second question is whether public support for commercially oriented research and development will become an important source of new general-purpose technologies. A third and more disturbing question is whether a major war, or the threat of major war, will be necessary to mobilize the scientific, technical, and financial resources necessary to induce the development of new general-purpose technologies. When the history of United States technology development in the next half century is written, it will focus on incremental rather than revolutionary changes in both military and commercial technology. It will also be written within the context of slower productivity growth than of the relatively high rates that prevailed in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s or during the information technology bubble that began in the early 1990s. These will impose severe constraints on the capacity of the United States to sustain a global-class military posture and a position of leadership in the global economy.
Customer Reviews:
mythology debunked: The military and technological innovation.......2006-05-22
This book is about military R&D and procurement and technology development (forget the first title chosen by the publisher's marketing department; rather use the author's subtitle that tells you exactly what to expect).
It is an important, thorough, dispassionate, and easy to read book all in one.
Vernon Ruttan, distinguished economist of technological change has struck again and addressed a topic that is as explored little by scholars as it is ideologically and politically laden. Proponents try to justify any military expenditures with the (uncertain) promise of civilian "spin-offs" (in addition to ex ante declared military requirements --remember "star wars"?), and critics always highlight failures (remember nuclear powered aircrafts?) as well as excessive costs of military technologies ignoring their early life cycle nature of almost one-of-a-kind technology and the indeed substantial (even if often unplanned or unintended) civilian application potentials.
Vernon Ruttan reviews through seven careful case studies of socalled general purpose technologies the history and the economic implications of a number of military technologies that have yielded far reaching civilian applications with enormous economic and social significance: interchangeable parts in rifle manufacturing that give birth to the socalled American "system of manufacturing" (and invented in Army armories rather than in Eli Whitney's "lab"), military aircraft and propulsion systems (jet engines in particular), nuclear power (reactors), computers and semiconductors, the internet (in case you did not know, it all started with military R&D money), and finally the space industries (satellites).
What makes this book so eminently readable is its succinct and dispassionate review of all what we know about these technologies: their origins, the role of the military R&D and procurement in its development as well as how they spread out to civilian applications and the economic significance of their applications. Few succeed as formidably as Vernon Ruttan in condensing voluminous literature into a clear and understandable summary within less than 200 pages (a formidable achievement in itself in our present times of 600 plus pages monographs). Throughout his analysis he remains objective, clear headed and with analytical rigor, at times even with candor. There is no better book than this one to dispel any one-sided claim about the importance/usefulness of military R&D and procurement.
My personal principal take-away from Ruttan's analysis (from his highly original counterfactual history for computers, semiconductors and the internet) is that despite the enormous importance and significance of the military in the development of all the technologies reviewed, we would have gotten them anyway even without the military - even if substantially later and perhaps less highly developed. The only exception seems to be nuclear power, which in all likelihood would not be around without the military (and which many would agree is a mixed blessing at best). But judge for yourself. The reading is easy and fun, and the analysis worth every of your minutes!

Book Description
A searing account of life in the underclass and why it persists as it does, written by a British psychiatrist.
Customer Reviews:
If only every person in America would read this.......2007-10-17
The American system of government was never meant to be a system whereby people had to consider themselves to be at the bottom of society. No matter how many programs the politicians try to add to "even things out", they will only be perpetuating a life at the bottom of society. In fact, it will only get worse. Everyone should read this book.
The Consequences of Not Knowing how to Live.......2007-10-03
This collection of essays based on Dalrymple's 30 years as a doctor in a British slum describes the murderer who *had* to kill his wife, or else he didn't know what he might have done; the patient whose occupation is "just normal burglaries"; the woman who goes to live with a violent boyfriend, saying Dalrymple's advice not to do so is "sexist" (for implying men are physically stronger than women); the man who joined a religious cult as the only place for love (or some faximile of it) in a world of self-centered egoists.
Is poverty and discrimination the cause of such misery? No, says Dalrymple. Most of it is caused by "not knowing how to live": by seeing gratification of one's immediate desires as the only good worth pursuing. Marriage, obeying the law, getting an education, or showing common decency to others are all "out", as they all often require denying one's immediate desires in favor of some greater good. The result is a recreation of Hobbes' "state of nature"--a war of all against all--in the British lower class.
After giving us horrific, yet fascinating, examples of what not knowing how to live does to an individual and to his society, Dalrymple wonders who is to blame? He claims the blame lies with "progressive" pieties favored by intellectuals: e.g., that marriage is "sexist" and "opressive"; that "self-expression" is the highest good; that "breaking social taboo" is in itself worthwhile; that criminals are "victims" of the "unfair capitalist system"; and so on. Such ideas percolated into the lower class and became dogma, whose popularity is due to its self-serving nature.
You will not soon forget this book. It is fascianting, well written, and shocking. While you may not agree with Dalrymple's exact reasons for the collapse of civil society among the poor, it will blow away what might be left of the juvenile "it's because society is unfair" nonsense.
Poverty in all its Dimensions.......2007-09-28
Dalrymple believes that poverty as demonstrated in the 'underclass' is caused in great part by the world view and policies of uninformed liberal thinking and actions. He ably describes poverty in spiritual, emotional, rational and financial terms as seen through the lens of his profession. As a doctor who has worked for many years in hospitals serving the underclass and in prisons in a large English city and, earlier in life, in Africa, he describes what he has observed in a series of essays comprising this book.
Many readers will not agree with his conclusions because they (erroneously) believe that having too little money is the root cause of poverty. Dalrymple thinks that the modern liberal thinking is the root cause of the mess that poor people experience. He makes a strong case against the common belief that lack of money is the root cause of poverty.
Dalrymple believes that 'values neutrality,' multi-culturalism, among other beliefs and ideologies espoused by academics and policy makers, have created a kind of nihilism. He posits these trends have been part of the general debasement of culture. This replacement of more positive values such as education, family, hard work, sacrifice, deferred gratification, etc., in the culture, he believes, is the prime cause of poverty in all its forms. It produces bad choices and actions by people and fosters their continued poverty.
Worth a read for those who care about culture, and the gradual erosion of positive values.
Life at the Bottom.......2007-09-11
Great book on the perils of Government running your life. Should be a must in every Sociology dept in Universities and Colleges.
We will have them with us always.......2007-08-31
This is a collection of essays written by a British psychologist over a number years. His profession led him to the dregs of humanity and the penal system. His ideas are provocative, but offer little hope for the future. As a Emergency Room physician I have had to deal extensively with the pathos of the underclass, and the fact that it is largely of their own making and poor decisions. I enjoyed the book, but could find little reason for hope for a change.

Book Description
Description Feather and Brush traces the 300-year history of bird art in Australia, from the crudely illustrated records of the earliest European voyages of discovery to the diversity of artwork available today. It is a history inseparable from the development of Australian ornithology. Against a background of establishment of the country itself, naval draftsmen, convicts, officers, settlers, naturalists, artists and scientists alike contributed both to the art and to science.
Driven by the excitement of discovery and description of new and exotic birds, the illustration of Australian birds flourished in the late 18th and 19th centuries, then fell into neglect. In recent decades, increasing interest in the environment has led to a revitalisation of the art. A wealth of contemporary Australian artists has turned their attention to birds and never before has wildlife illustration been so varied and accessible.
Stunningly illustrated, Feather and Brush contains over 250 images representing 94 artists. Some are well-known, others are published for the first time. All have been carefully selected for their merit, be it ornithological, historical or artistic. The book links the greats of yesterday - including Ferdinand Bauer, Edward Lear, George Raper, John Lewin, the Goulds and the mysterious Port Jackson Painter - with some of the finest wildlife artists working in Australia today, many with an intimate knowledge of the birds in the field.
