Origami Foil Paper.......2005-06-05
Origami foil paper
First of all, this is not a book, it's a collection of 18 sheets of foil backed with white paper, for use in folding origami models. The foil is reasonably good quality and does not crack when you make a sharp fold as some do. The range of colours is quite good though as always in a multi pack like this there are some you may not want to use. The sheets are cut very accurately and the papers work well for folding complex models as the foil is very thin.
I regard the cost as being the one thing against this product, there is no need for all the extra packaging and the paper could easily have been sold in its cellophane wrapping only with just a tab at the top or a cardboard insert with the publisher information, and then it could have cost far less. However it's difficult to find good quality origami foil, this is similar in feel to Japan foil so seasoned folders will be pleased to have an easily available supply.

The World's Greatest Comic Magazine!.......2003-05-31
These are the stories that started the "Marvel Age of Comics". Really good stuff. Lee and Kirby changed the way superheroes were presented. Before this, superheroes didn't have personal problems, or ever argue with each other. Great characters here, in entertaining stories. Highly recommended.
Jack Kirby Made them Fantastic!.......2000-04-05
This book has beautifully reprinted the first ten issues of the Fantastic Four. Credit is given to Jack Kirby but not enough. Though the book is a beautiful reprinting of classic MARVEL, it should tell the fans how the Fantastic Four really came to be. After all the concept of the super team was nothing new to Jack Kirby when he first penned the first issue of the Fantastic Four. Really the Fantastic Four are recycled characters of Jack Kirby's "Challengers of the unknown" comic book done for the D.C. Comics before Jack Kirby returned to Marvel. This book brings back the memories of the early Fantastic Four adventures. My favorite issue is the introduction of Dr. Doom. There's always something exciting going on in every Panel. Jack Kirby's artwork was and still is to this day awesome! The fact that the first ten issues are all compiled in this book is really something because if you were to go out and try to buy issue one to ten, you'd be in the poor house. If you don't own a copy of this book, What are you waiting for ? Kirby's comic book creations will clobber you. Jack Kirby really created something special when he re-worked the challengers of the unknown. Jack Kirby single handedly saved Marvel comics with this super team. This book is really worth your time. When you pick it up, you can't put it down. The Price is just right to. If you love comics, this book has to be in your collection. Thank's for the Fantastic Four Jack Kirby.
Wonderful reprinting of Marvel's Fantastic Four!.......1998-01-04
The latest printing (5th, just released 1/98) is a beautiful reprinting of the first ten issues of the Fanastic Four. While the introduction is in the typical Stan Lee manner (which I happen to like), ample credit is given to Jack Kirby's contributions without whom there may not have been a continuing and successful series.
If you are a fan of Marvel Comics, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four, comics, the 1960's, etc., then this would make a great addition to your collection or library.

FF debut.......2006-08-20
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the FF in answer to DC's Justice League but the similarity ends there. Unless you have been off-planet for the last 40+ years you already know the players so I won't bore you.
The only drawback here is the fact that Stan and Jack are still finding their way. They are winding down a decade-long partnership creating mediocre monster stories and the style and content of those stories bleeds over a bit.
HOWEVER, In these gems we first meet Dr. Doom, the returning Golden Age anti-hero Sub-Mariner, the Skrulls and so much more. The sheer volume of creativity here is staggering...and it doesn't even peak for 5 years! This ain't the best but this is where it starts. Right here, on these very pages, is the beginnings of what Stan rightfully dubbed the Marvel Age of Comics.

Book Description
Swan River is a compelling and nostalgic family memoir that explores themes of love, loss, and discovery. As a child, David Reynolds developed a fascination with the story of his grandfather, who had mysteriously disappeared from London decades earlier. Reynolds consulted relatives, read diaries, and slowly pieced together a spellbinding story. Family members from four generations are beautifully drawn — from his great-aunt who could walk on her hands while playing the violin with her feet, to Reynolds’s own father, a warm-hearted man of great complexity.

The Cambodian Holocaust.......2002-07-22
When I was younger I heard bits and pieces about Cambodia and Pol Pot in the news, but didn't really know what it was about. Through "Destroy You" I finally know about the horrendous and evil history that was being made in that country during the 70's and 80's. This biography follows the story of one particular educated Cambodian family who was exiled from Phnom Penh, along with the entire city full of inhabitants. The Khmer Rouge was doing its job of "cleansing" the city of anything of western influence. Most of the educated populace, including doctors, teachers, lawyers, etc., were murdered, leaving a population of mostly uneducated slaves whose job was to work in the rice fields all day long. Music, laughter, and play were not allowed. The people were taught that everyone was of equal value and equally dispensable, and everyone should work hard to contribute to the good of all with the meekness, acceptance, and fortitude of the water buffalo.
Meanwhile, entire villages were massacred if complaint about the government was overheard. Life was incredibly miserable, especially knowing of friends and relatives that had been killed or had disappeared. When Viet Nam invaded Cambodia tens of thousands of Cambodians attempted escape to Thailand, but Thailand did not want them all, and forced many back at gunpoint, killing anyone, including children, who refused to climb down the treacherous, land mine-studded cliff back into Cambodia. Throughout this book I was grieving about the incredible evil that humans can perpetrate against other humans, and amazed at the endurance and determination of this family and others that managed to survive all this horror.
A story like this can yank us out of any tendency towards self-pity or complaining about the minor difficulties in our lives. I have also read the follow-up book, "Bamboos and Butterflies", about this family after they immigrated to the U.S. Their will to survive is carried on as they integrate into a new culture, and reminds us of why so many seek refuge in the U.S.
A frightening, moving and important story.......2002-01-05
Joan Criddle has woven a gripping account of the personal experience of one young woman, Teeda Butt Mam, and her family under the oppression of the Khymer Rouge. Although I knew a little about Cambodia's killing fields, this book reveals in considerable detail the brutality and horror of Pol Pot's regime. Yet, it's an inspiring tale of survival, courage, and family loyalty under the most extreme conditions of deprivation, fear and suffering. I couldn't help but wonder if I would have had the strength, ingenuity and willpower to survive such horror. The book also includes many interesting details about traditional Cambodian life and culture.
I highly recommend this book. It's an amazing story!

Book Description
Sixty years ago, the United States and Great Britain spearheaded efforts to create a new world order based on international rules. Today these two nations are leading the charge to disregard the very global safeguards they once fought to establish. In this eye-opening book, international lawyer Philippe Sands explains why this radical policy shift has occurred and how it will affect twenty-first-century world politics.
Using the events of September 11 and the subsequent Âwar on terror as justification, the Bush administration has turned its back on many international agreements governing basic human rights, war, torture, the environment, and free trade, with Tony Blair often colluding. Focusing on watershed events such as the repudiation of the Kyoto Protocol and the abuses at Guantánamo Bay and Abu Ghraib, Sands argues that the United States and Britain are undermining international law at the precise moment when it has become most essential.
Crisp, impassioned, and hard hitting, Lawless World is at once an exposé and an indictment of a catastrophic realignment of the laws that govern international affairs.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Analysis of Current Events vis-a-vis International Law.......2007-07-23
This in-depth analysis of today's new world order through the lens of international law provides great information and research especially on international trade--with really interesting implications related to global warming--and the Iraq war and its 'torturous' aftermath. International law is being thoroughly abused, which is concerning considering it represents a minimum standards of acceptable behavior.
Why should George Bush be impeached? Read this book. If President Bush or Vice President Cheney are complicit or participate in torture, which they are, they could be tried as a criminal under a plethora of international and domestic laws. Why is international law important? Read the global warming chapter.
This is a great book for anyone regardless of ones familiarity or professional interest in law. It would be a great addition to a university's introductory international law course.
Makes a horribly complex and convoluted subject understandable.......2007-06-09
I found Sands' book to be a very readable and enlightening work. I do not have any experience with law and knew almost nothing of international law but still found the information in this book to be very accessible and easy to understand. Usually whenever I read anything on law my biggest battle is trying to stay conscious.
The main thing I took away from this work is just how tenuous the rule of international law is in today's volatile world. The amount of influence that the United States wields as the world's only remaining super power is out of proportion with the needs of the world. International laws unsupported by the U.S. are useless, and if the UN and the other mechanisms (such as the ICC) created to impose law, order, human rights and protect the environment continue to be opposed or actively obstructed by the U.S. there will never be any peace based on world consensus. The U.S. must stop seeking to extend its hegemony into further areas and allow its power and influence to recede so that there can be more equality.
The opposition to international law in the U.S. is not confined to one political party or the other because both parties have attempted to extend the U.S. dominance in the world. One nation cannot be above all others if any type of international system is to be affective.
This book is an easy to read eye opener. If you are looking for an accessible guide to what is happening in international law then this is the book for you.
Fascinating, though provocative look at America's (mis)use of International Law.......2006-11-25
Philippe Sands book is a sort-of introduction to International Law. He definitely has a bias and an agenda, namely to point out America's, particularly the Bush administration's, arbitrary use of International law and its vitriolic disdain for International law. This is shown as especially ironic in light of the fact that America, together with the UK, brought about the modern International legal order, including human rights, trade, environmental, and other stuff that's hated by many in the USA. This book will prove stimulating to both lawyers and non-lawyers. It will make most feel a deep distress over America's current attitute towards international law and international institutions.
For college-level collections strong in human rights issues and global politics........2006-04-28
The 'war on terror' is misconceived and bound to fail, says lawyer Philippe Sands in LAWLESS WORLD: AMERICA AND THE MAKING AND BREAKING OF GLOBAL RULES FROM FDR'S ATLANTIC CHARTER TO GEORGE BUSH'S ILLEGAL WAR. He describes how in the process of conducting its war the Bush administration ignored or broke the rules on many international agreements governing basic human rights, war, and free trade; and he provides a survey of similar international events and international rules governing trade, finances, human rights and the use of force. Especially recommended for college-level collections strong in human rights issues and global politics.
Wait for the update, or order from AMAZON.UK.......2006-04-06
Regarding the reviewer that bemoaned AMAZOM's failure to send him the latest edition, please note that I saw Philippe Sands being interviewed a couple of weeks ago, and he'd mentioned that the latest revision (with latest revelations and insights) was indeed already available in the United Kingdom, but _not_ yet in the USA. If you check Barnes & Noble and Buy.com, they are also still carrying the October 2005 edition. You will want the February 3, 2006 edition (ISBN: 0141017996), which you can order now from the AMAZON.UK website, or wait until it comes out in the USA (which will have therefore a later publication date than Feb. 3rd). Note, if you contact any of the sustomer service reps at these online booksellers, they can promise you the latest edition, but only to the best of their knowledge, and since they rarely have info on future release dates of many books (high-anticipation books like Harry Potter and the latest Stephen King being the exception) they are going to send you the latest edition that they actually have, which in this instance is the October 2005 edition. I face this regularly with one of my favorite authors (Paul Watkins), whose works come out in the U.K. many months prior to their USA releases.
