    Book Description

Richly illustrated and clearly focused, this book surveys the genesis, development, and culmination of modern European/American painting, sculpture, architecture, and conceptual art—from Post-Impressionism through the most recent developments in the 1990s. It avoids the typical encyclopedic approach of surveys in favor of examining selected but highly representative works in greater depth and from an enlarged spectrum of critical discourse. Organized along chronological lines, topics explore the ideas, forms, events, artists, and works—with each chapter devoted to a style, movement, or decade—from Cézanne, Seurat, Gauguin, and Van Gogh through Minimalism and the general reaction known as Post-Modernism. Ideal for readers with a general

    Book Description

In this revised edition of The Sheep Book, Ron Parker updates many aspects of sheep stewardship—such as new or newly banned medications, progress in reproductive technology, popular new sheep breeds, and the growing dairy sheep field. Updated nutrition tables, as well as email and web addresses, further enhance the book’s sensible advice and gentle wit. The Sheep Book is organized according to the natural reproductive cycle of the ewe, leading the reader through a year in sheep’s life during which sheep and shepherd form a symbiosis. A good shepherd manages a flock so that its care and environment fits all stages of the annual journey—from breeding through pregnancy, lambing, growing of lambs, marketing of lambs and wool, and the revitalization of the ewe for another cycle. “Sheep are the ideal, useful domesticated animal,” writes Parker. “They are hardy and healthy. Except for an occasional aggressive ram or uppity ewe they are gentle and submissive. They are small enough for a good-sized child or senior citizen to handle. They give both superlative meat and a fiber that has no peer. They are the ideal animal for the homestead, small farm, place in the country, suburban backyard, or any other place where man makes his home and grass will grow.” The Sheep Book is especially valuable for small and moderate-scale sheep raisers and those interested in growing wool for fiber arts. Enhanced and updated for the internet age, this classic book is a valuable companion for anyone who wants to raise sheep that are healthy and productive, and to do so by working in harmony with the natural instincts of sheep and the rhythms of the natural world.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best book for those contemplating raising sheep!.......2007-02-22

There are a lot of sheep books out there, but for beginner shepherds, I always recommend this clasic book. Many seasoned shepherds still refer to Ron's book for his solid information. First published in 1983, Ron Parker updated "The Sheep Book" in 2001, and it is better than ever.

3 out of 5 stars Great for folks just starting out........2003-06-29

This book will tell the newcomer all the basics and touches upon the economics in a non-technical manner.

The book is a good source for adults and teens.

Ron Parker has done a good job simplifying technical jargon so the novice has a chance to avoid pestering other shepherds with strange questions.

1 out of 5 stars I hated it. So ridiculously stereotypical.......2004-12-30

I bought this book a couple years ago, and I must say I definitely agree with the reviewer who gave it one star. There were a lot of things that either seemed to be stereotypical or I just didn't get. I'd give it zero stars, but that's not an option.

                                5 out of 5 stars I loved it.......2003-08-04

I thought I knew alot of fun things about being Gay, but this really does take some beating. I especially liked the section about 'What you can do with a tied up Frazer!' and 'How to convert people called Bob and Tobyn to being gay the legal way' and 'How to convert people called Frazer to being gay the ILLEGAL way'

The book is great and can't get enough of it.....

1 out of 5 stars Not so great "Great Things" book.......2001-09-06

I should be able to say 503 great things about a book with a title like this. But in reality, I have one great thing to say: it didn't cost me an arm and a leg so I don't feel so bad tossing it on the shelf and forgetting about it. Sure, some of the "great things" were funny and I'll probably be saying "I wasn't born gay. It was sheer luck" for a long time, but much of the book is based on ridiculously outdated stereotypes. I give it one star, but only because Amazon wouldn't let me skip that question.

                                5 out of 5 stars A peek into myself....?.......2000-04-22

My mom and I were shopping and she picked up this book, opened it and started laughing away. It so happened she had opened it to the "you can always say the right words in at least one other language" and, seeing as I speak four, it fit me perfectly. We drove home laughing (even had to pull off the road once) at the really true (well, at least to me) witty aspects of Gay life. I think my favourite is surely: I didn't choose to be Gay. I just got lucky:) Though I'd probably be better described with "you look like a Ralph Lauren model" or "you can dance". Girlfriend...you'd better buy this, it's fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars Up too late.......1999-12-30

I didn't get enough sleep last night because of this book. I thought I'd read a few pages before going to sleep and ended up reading it cover to cover. Many of the 501 things rang true for me, and I laughed out loud many times (I guffawed at least twice). I love this funny little book. Now I'll let my partner read it (after all, I gave it to him for Christmas!).

                                Book Description

Theodor W. Adorno broached key questions about the role of music in contemporary society and argued that it affected consciousness and was a means of social management and control. Asserting that music sociology can be greatly enriched by returning to Adorno's focus on music as a dynamic medium of social life, this book considers cognition, the emotions and music as a management device.

While DeNora - in true Adronian style - keeps a dialectically critical distance to Adorno's writings, she pulls off a sound overture of his output, but also executes a sophisticated theoretical extrapolation of Adorno's concerns grounded in empirically interpretative case studies. Overall a purposeful book that fantastically contributes to the growing literature of music sociology.

                                      Book Description

This book shows how the labeling of children as "at-risk" actually perpetuates the inequities, racism, and discrimination facing many families in America.

"In Children and Families 'At Promise': Deconstructing the Discourse of Risk we see how deconstructing the at risk label is inextricably linked to a critical analysis of pervasive poverty and exclusionary and discriminatory educational practices within our society. Many myths have been decoded in these chapters. The 'at promise' narratives present a countertext of possiblility and action. It is clear, in reading the accounts of successful classrooms in this book, that when classrooms do become landscapes of promise, they offer children a place where their selfhood matters, where they do find acceptance and possibility, and where they can become meaningmakers within their lifeworld of school." -- from the Epilogue by Valerie Polakow, author of Lives on the Edge: Single Mothers and Their Children in the Other America

This book critiques the currently popular "at-risk" construct, drawing from historical, contextual, critical, and personal perspectives. It provides an alternative context for viewing children and their families as "at-promise." A basic premise of the book is that the generalized use of the "at-risk" label is highly problematic and often implicitly racist and classist--a 1990s version of the cultural deficit model that locates problems in individuals, families, and communities, rather than in institutional structures that create and maintain inequality. This book provides a needed interrogation and alternative context for viewing children and families caught in the extreme conditions facing many families in the United States.

                                        Book Description

By the fifteenth century the Swiss method of warfare, in which disciplined foot soldiers fought in tightly formed units, was being imitated. The Germans and Spanish took notice when in 1479 Archduke Maximilian and his victorious Flemish infantrymen used their long pikes to prevent the mounted French knights from charging. The era of modern warmaking was at hand.

In this last volume of his classic history of the art of war, Hans Delbrück considers new developments: the use of gunpowder, the invention of firearms, and the employment of noisy large cannon that shot stone and, later, iron balls. After reviewing the establishment of a European infantry, Delbrück discusses the transformation of loose confederations of knights into cavalry (well developed by the last Huguenot wars), the organization of fighting mercenaries (followed by wives and prostitutes), and the changing of mercenary bands into standing armies.

The Dawn of Modern Warfare is colored by larger-than-life personalities: Niccolo Machiavelli, the theoretician of the new art of war; Maurice of Orange, renovator of the art of drill and father of military discipline; Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, perfecter of infantry tactics; Oliver Cromwell of England, reorganizer of a citizen militia into a professional army; and Frederick the Great and Napoleon Bonaparte, military strategists par excellence.

                                        4 out of 5 stars Weak Conclusion.......2002-06-26

Delbruck's conclusion, though weak, is excellent. No one has ever done a better analysis of Renaissance warfare. On the other hand, though, his treatment of the Thirty Years War was appalling. Had he gone back to the basics and dealt with this war in the same manner he did the Punic Wars in Volume One, this could have been the best volume. Additionally, he failed to do any real analysis of the Napoleonic wars. No contemporary history of early modern warfare would completely ignore the Peninsular Wars.

Delbruck's narrow focus is offset, though, by his snubbing of both Napoleon and Wellington.

His conclusion is weak, but it should be kept in mind that, due to his interruption by WWI, he was not able to take it as far as he wanted. It is easy to sense that the German failure in WWI changed some of his views on nineteenth-century warfare, and he could not write about it.

5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Conclusion to a Monumental Series of Books.......2000-07-01

Delbruk, as a one time tutor to Kaiser Frederick's youngest son, had a unique opportunity to observe the high water mark of Prussian military achievement and also to witness its collapse in World War I. He published this last volume of his masterwork in 1919, but he ended his study of "modern" war with the wars of Napoleon and the scholarship of Clausewitz. "What followed," he wrote, "included in the phenomenal rise of Prussia and its final collapse will have to be undertaken later by others." Perhaps it was too painful, or perhaps he realized that he was too close to the events to be able to give an unbiased analysis. Whatever the reason, had he undertaken to write he would surely have made a valuable contribution to the military scholarship of World War I.

As he had done in his three previous volumes, Delbruk again gives a fresh, insightful analysis of the dawn of modern war, but in this volume he also gives good studies of some of the early practitioners and theorists of the the early modern era. (E.g., Gustavus Adolphus, Cromwell, Machiavelli, and Clausewitz).

Delbruk, having proclaimed in Volume III that cavalry didn't exist during the Middle Ages, gives a lucid account of how cavalry came to replace chivalry. Delbruk adds an interesting commentary on the matter of cavalryman versus knight when he describes knightly encounters with cavalry during the Huguenot wars. The French knights hated discipline and pistols, considering both things unchivalrous. Their enemies' lowborn cavalrymen disdained neither, and consequently the French knights repeatedly experienced the agony of defeat.

The debate over the accuracy of Delbruck's revisionist approach to historical battle accounts aside, Warfare in Antiquity is an impressive effort by a meticulous author.

First of all, it should be made clear that these volumes are not "History of War" or "the Art of War", but "History of the Art of War." That is, you must already have or be prepared to obtain a historical context for the subject matter - Delbruck spends virtually no time providing background or summaries of the subject matter. In addition, Dulbruck does not address (at least, in his initial volumes) how war ought to be waged (ala Clausewitz). Rather, the focus of his work in on the evolution of the art of war employed at key historic events.

These volumes are at their most engaging in the study of ancient warfare. The analysis of the evolution of tactics in response to weapons, fighting styles, population, and geography is fascinating.

I have two major gripes with these books (and yes, I realize the author is long dead and unable to satisfy my deficiencies): First is the serious need of editing and revision. So much information is crammed into the footnotes, addenda, and revised responses that it makes the read of each chapter something like transcendant deja-vu. It makes for a multi-tiered reading experience that is quite unique, and disconcerting. Secondly, a few diagrams, maps, or plots would have been extremely helpful. I'm afraid that I'm a product of an educational system that limits my ability to conceptually distinguish between knolls, hillocks, rises, and a plain-old hill.

As to Delbruck's penchant for demythologizing ancient battles, I can only say that he is fairly convincing, most notably with regard to Marathon.

5 out of 5 stars Delbruck's Logical approace to Military History is perfect........2002-09-20

This book and its sister volumes are a must have for any serious or amature historian. He is methodical in the extreame in fully backing up the conclusions he reaches. Some may be upset by his debunking of long held myths i.e. Barbarian numerical superiority in battles with Rome, and many people will confuse his use of terminology but he never makes a claim with out strong support. You will rarely see such research and footnoting in the commonly free-wheeling military history world. One commentor attacked his use of the term Phalanx for example. It is unfortunate that so many people have fallen into incorrect common references for such fundamental ancient battle formations. Delbruck is absolutely correct in his use of the term Phalanx since its correct usage is to reference the mass of the formed infantry in any ancient army and not individual units as so many have come to believe as a result of poor scholarship by many casual historians. This is a particular problem in the wargaming world where much terminology, phalanx among them, is incorrectly used. In fact Delbruck does one of the best jobs you will find pointing out the reasons to be skeptical regarding army size reports through out history and is very methodical in showing where these exagerations most notably occur and why. He does all this while not dismissing the core importance of the first hand accounts he is referencing. If you want to begin to understand ancient warfare this is the book you should start with and all others should be held to its high standard.

3 out of 5 stars interesting, but I would'nt take it too seriously........2002-08-23

While Delbruck does offer some interesting theories, his scheptic attitude toward Roman historians, ie Livy, while not to be taken too literally, does offer some merit. Hans simply tends to call " fable" to many Roman achievments. For instance, the punitive expedition to recover the Roman standards after the disaster of the teutoburger forest in 15 AD. by Germanicus resulting in Arminius's defeat... Hans also calls "phalanx" to caesar's formations in the battle of pharsalus?? Clearly by this time the Romans had abandoned the Phalanx! He also does not believe the Romans used manipular formations after the battle of Cannae, belittles the achievments of Marcellus after Cannae. Offers no tactical explanation on how the Romans defeated Hasdrubal at the Metarus!

If you want a revisonist view, read this book, otherwise I would'nt take it seriously.

Splitting the classical era into two separate volumes was an ingenious move. Delbruck allowed himself enough room to explore the downfall of the Roman Empire (and clear up some misconceptions about it) and the warfare of the Germanic tribes that had become the Roman armies. The bad side to this work is that it focuses exclusively on Europe, leaving aside any investigation of what was going on in the Eastern portion of the Empire -- events that led to the recruitment of the Germans. This should not dissuade you too much from reading this book. It is important to keep in mind that Delbruck was doing all of this on his own, without assistance (and often in the face of opposition) or previous scholars to rely upon. If Dlebruck's "Germanness" is disappointing, his scholarship is still amazing.

Delbruck's four volume History of the Art of War is both the first modern approach to military history and one of the best. His work is not a simple list and description of battles, but the exploration -- over all four volumes -- of a particular theme.

The first volume, Warfare in Antiquity, is the greatest of the four. It is the only one that can be read by itself, and remains the most brilliant work on classical warfare ever written.

I checked out a lot of reviews of other books before I bought this one, and I'm not disappointed. What's particularly great is that it really zeroes in on the local election with very specific ideas and tasks.

As I've worked on local elections for others, I can say that Thomas clearly knows what he's talking about, and he's taught me many things I didn't know. When it comes time to throw my hat in the ring myself, this book will be my bible.

This is probably the best $15 or so that you will spend on your campaign. There is lots of valuable advice which will come in handy as you embark on your first run for office. I ran for school board in my town and beat a 9-year incumbent with almost 60% of the vote. You could have heard a pin drop in the room when they announced the result. It was quite an upset. The book is a short read which you can rip through in a couple of days. A lot of the tactics I used in my campaign came straight from the book, especially targeting "good" voters when you have a limited budget.

Anyone running for local office for the first time would be wise to read through the book.

Robert J. Thomas is not a great writer in the conventional sense, but perhaps miraculously, this humble and unassuming 128 page mini-tome is the best book on running for office that I've ever read. Mr. Thomas gives you the information that you need to know without a lot of filler, and he gears the book to the most likely potential readership - the first-time campaigner without a lot of money, connections, or experience. No fluff, no filler, no frills. When I ran for office in 2004, I purchased five how-to-run-a-campaign books (see my other reviews), and this was the best of the bunch. Thank you, Robert J. Thomas! I only got 1.33% of the vote (Green Party candidate in five-way race), but the tips and techniques offered herein probably saved me from an even more humiliating defeat.

How To Run would most likely help an aspiring politician and I may yet reference it for a friend's campaign however, the format makes it very difficult to read and the layout is confusing. The author also repeats himself quite a bit. The book is not very interesting nor is it easy to read but, if you want a book the you can reference occasionally this will suit you just fine.

I've read quite a few books on running for office and this is the best one I've seen for running for local elections. If you are running in a County, City, Township or Village race, this book has a wealth of real, usable information. The book is easy to read, has real-life examples that you can understand and is the best book I've seen for people running in smaller, local races. I personally have given it to candidates and recommend it to all candidates. Great, useful book!
