Book Description
This book is about using art as an instrument of personal transformation, enabling us to move from an inherited to a chosen state of being. Peter London offers inspiration and fresh ideas to artists, art students, and art teachers—as well as to people who think they can't draw a straight line but want to explore the joys of creative expression. Inside every person, he believes, there is an original, creative self that has been covered over by secondhand ideas, borrowed beliefs, and conditioned behavior. By freeing the capacity for visual expression—a natural human language possessed by everyone—we can awaken and release the full powers of that original self. Among the topics and exercises included are: How to increase the ability to visualize, fantasize, and dream Obstacles to the creative encounter and what to do about them Experimenting with art media as true mediators between imagination and expression Making masks to reveal the hidden self Painting with "forbidden" colors Arranging found objects as metaphors for one's life

CLASS TOOL .......2005-10-29
ANOTHER ART TEACHER HAD RECOMENDED THIS BOOK TO ME. I HELP TEACH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. I LOVE THE VARIETY OF LESSONS, THE IN DEPTH TEACHING AND EXAMPLES GIVEN. (THEIR ARE A FEW LESSONS THAT ARE TOO ADVANCED FOR SOME OF THE STUDENTS, BUT I MYSELF HAVE FUN WITH THOSE.)
If you like The Artist's Way ..........2005-10-03
-this is a good companion to it. He's a bit verbose occasionally but gives you difference insights on the same material. The "creative encounters" are exercises to increase creativity and can be used alone or with a group. This is an old book, but I'd seen it cited several times. Still well worth a read if you're interested in creativity and how to open people to being creative.
No No Secon-Hand Art.......2005-02-01
This is one of the most inspiring books you can read if you are an art student or just interested in art. Peter London tells the artists to go out and find themselves, make their own art, an experiment with encounter. Encounters are excises that are designed to help you know yourself and find out maybe unknown things about you. Since, he is an art therapist, the exercises are very creative and geared to giving you incite into how you can go out and create your own art based on what you have learned from encountrs with self.
This may be a very unique approach to art-making but it's a journey through your own soul and I believe you need to make that journey to make your artwokd say what you want it to say.
London's title is roughtly based on a book by Buckmaster Fuller, who wrote "No More Second-Hand God". Fuller states that if you want to know God, go out and find him for yourself. Don't just except whar yu've been told. That is someone else's experience. Peter London also suggest that other aqartist's work is about them, not about you. Go out and find yourself , then you will be able to communicate visually your unique fellings and deepest thought. Presuasive and inspiring, would recommend you pick it up today.
"Art is a response to a call...".......2003-03-10
Having studied with Peter London over the past ten years I can assure readers that as a teacher he lives what he writes. He embodies what every teacher should bring to students: careful listening, respectful attention, thoughtful questioning. His writings have won the deserved respect of his educator and artist colleagues nationwide. Treat yourself to a fine book.
Teachers Listen.......2002-07-13
I've read this book three times from cover to cover in the past ten years; every now and again for just certain sections. I wish every teacher taught with the respect and care that comes through in the words of this book; won't you try? It is an invaluable resource for the teacher; covering subjects such as setting up classroom environments, critiques, media, and even giving art experience ideas. If you listen carefully to his words you will be given precious pieces of knowledge for your classroom and your studio, from someone who undoubtedly practices and believes in what he knows to be good. It's that real; and that important.

Book Description
Proverbs have long been humanity's sound bites. Snippets of sagacity, proverbs presumably sum up the best thinking on a subject in a terse, inspiring way.Okay, so not always. Through the years, some of our most famous wits have used and abused well-worn sayings, adapting them for their own comic purposes. Groucho Marx, Mae West, and Joan Rivers are only a few of the well-known perpetrators featured in the hilarious new book Do Unto Others . . . Then Run. Some examples:o Love thy neighbor as thyself, but choose your neighborhood. -Louise Bealo A watched pot is usually owned by someone without cable. -Philip J. Frankenfeldo History repeats itself. Historians repeat each other. -Philip GuedallaDo Unto Others is sure to appeal to everyone who enjoys wordplay, puns, twisted meanings, and quick comebacks.
Customer Reviews:
Kind of cute. Might work as a stocking-stuffer gift........2005-03-01
This palm size book contains 123 humorous (or attempting to be humorous) proverbs, many of them spin-offs of the originals. Some categories of proverbs are:
Sick - "Women: Can't live with them, can't bury them in the backyard without the neighbors seeing" - Sean Williamson
Wishful Thinking - "Time Wounds all heels" - Jane Ace
Inspirational - "He who laughs, lasts." - Mary Pettibone Poole
Funny - "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a delay of about three hours." -Milton Berle
Depressing - "Dead owls don't give a hoot." - Milton Berle
Huh? - "People who live in glass houses have to answer the door bell." - Bruce Patterson
This small volume is quite a mixed bag of what I would consider 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5-star quotes, most in the middle. It's not something I would buy, but it was a nice dumpster dive find by my roommate. :-)
A TWISTED POCKET PAL TO HELP YOU WIN (AND LOSE) PALS.......2003-05-31
This teeny tome (it measures 3.5 by 3.5 inches) is the perfect pocket-sized primer of used (and abused) proverbs and sayings, bastardized by some famous folks to suit their own applause-getting needs. Think Roseanne: "The fastest way to a man's heart is through his chest." Think Rhonda Boozer: "A bird in the hand is dead." Think John Lennon: "Beauty is in the eye of the newt and a hair of the dog." (Huh?) Think Dorothy Parker: "Don't put all your eggs into one bastard." Think Woody Allen: "TB or not TB, that is the congestion." Mae's here, as is Lenny and Groucho and W.C. It's a shame the cover is so misleading: "Do unto others ... then run" was muttered by Benny Hill, but Groucho. Here, the book ain't on the Marx.

Book Description
Sculthorpe is one of Australia's most prominent composers and is among the most important composers on the international scene. Although he is a distinguished academic and popular lecturer, Sculthorpe does not fit any ready-made category of composer or teacher. In a body of work that so far includes orchestral and chamber music in many genres and mediums, opera and other theater music, songs and choral music, and music for documentary and commercial films, radio, and television, he has established a personal musical style and public presence that have shaped the history of 20th-century music in Australia and the world. Owing to circumstances of place and time--Australia in the 20th century--he has been defining, or redefining, the role of composer for himself and his audiences. This book is a record of Sculthorpe's work and of its reception by composer colleagues, performers, critics, and audiences.

Book Description
The middle ages provide the material for mass-market films, for historical and fantasy fiction, for political propaganda and claims of legitimacy, and these in their turn exert a force well outside academia. The phenomenon is too important to be left unscrutinised: these essays show the continuing power and applicability of medieval images - and also, it must be said, their dangerousness and often their falsity. Of the ten essays in this volume, several examine modern movies, including the highly-successful A Knight's Tale (Chaucer as a PR agent) and the much-derided First Knight/ (the Round Table fights the Gulf War). Others deal with the appropriation of history and literature by a variety of interested parties: King Alfred press-ganged for the Royal Navy and the burghers of Winchester in 1901, William Langland discovered as a prophet of future Socialism, Chaucer at once venerated and tidied into New England respectability. Vikings, Normans and Saxons are claimed as forebears and disowned as losers in works as complex as Rider Haggard's Eric Brighteyes, at once neo-saga and anti-saga. Victorian melodrama provides the clichés of 'the bad baronet' who revives the droit de seigneur (but baronets are notoriously modern creations); and of the 'bony grasping hand' of the Catholic Church and its canon lawyers (an image spread in ways eerily reminiscent of the modern 'urban legend' in its Internet forms).Contributors: BRUCE BRASINGTON, WILLIAM CALIN, CARL HAMMER, JONA HAMMER, PAUL HARDWICK, NICKOLAS HAYDOCK, GWENDOLYN MORGAN, JOANNE PARKER, CLARE A. SIMMONS, WILLIAM F. WOODS. Professor TOM SHIPPEY teaches in the Department of English at the University of St Louis; Dr MARTIN ARNOLD teaches at University College, Scarborough.

Book Description
Okay, so he bit the head off a bat. But if you've seen the hit MTV show "The Osbournes" you know that Ozzy, Sharon, and the whole Osbourne clan love animals -- just not when they're tearing up the furniture and leaving little presents on the carpets...and so what if that seems to be most of the time? Here's your official guide to the Prince of Darkness's very own animal kingdom -- and it ain't all warm and fuzzy.
Minnie. Maggie. Crazy Baby. Pipi. Lulu. Lola. Chicken. Arthur. Martini Bianco. Dirty Old Gus. Puss. Tigger. Hills. Moe. There are three times as many pets in the Osbourne household as there are humans. Here's the scoop on all of them, including breed, age, how they came to join the family, and even sexual orientation! You'll also find out who likes to sit on the dinner table during meals, who loves to sleep in the kitchen sink, who joined in on one of Ozzy and Sharon's intimate moments, and how poor Moe got catnapped.
Packed with priceless photos and hilarious stories, Bark at the Moon is the ultimate pet lovers' companion to The Osbournes.
Customer Reviews:
Good companion to the series.......2003-03-28
I am a fan of the Osbournes, and I was pleased to hear that they would be releasing several books. This guide is based on their many pets. It includes photos and stories told by the family. I enjoyed this book as it has some cheerful moments, but it does leave something to be desired for readers. However, it is a good companion to the series, and is a must have for a fan.
Overpriced and not worth it.......2003-03-15
I thought-as an animal lover and a fan of the Osbournes - this book would give quirky everyday "life in the dog house" stories. Not so.
It's like a picture book for gradeschoolers. Yeah, the pets are cute, but can they interact with the family?
I can't believe I spent [$$$] on a book(let) that is reminiscent of Pat The Bunny.

Book Description
Mona Charen has a loyal following from her syndicated newspaper column (which runs in more than two hundred newspapers) and her many television and radio appearances. Her first book, Useful Idiots, was an eight-week New York Times bestseller. Now sheÂ's back, switching her focus from foreign policy to domestic issues.
Unlike some conservatives who throw verbal hand grenades, Charen never gets shrill or mean. Instead, she focuses on the facts to reveal exactly why liberals are wrongÂand how their proposals hurt the very people they claim to be fighting for, as well as the country as a whole.
Do-Gooders is a guide to the smug know-it-alls in politics, the news media, and Hollywood who think they know whatÂ's best for the poor and other needy Americans. From Marian Wright Edelman to John Kerry, Hillary Rodham Clinton to Rob Reiner, this book will skewer the liberals by name. It covers topics such as:
Education: Do-gooders send their own kids to private schools while working to deny poor children a better education through voucher programs.
Affirmative Action: Do-gooders defend racial preferences at all costs while ignoring the enormous problems they create for African Americans at all levels of achievement.
Welfare: Do-gooders thought welfare reform in the 1990s would hurt the poor, and they still refuse to admit how much it actually helped.
By collecting and exposing the most outrageous quotes and actions of the do- gooders, this book will become a must-read for conservatives across the country as they gear up for the next round of policy battles.
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-09-05
This is one of the best books I've ever read. It really shows what the subtitle says it does.
Right wing flap-doodle.......2007-08-01
It is always instructive whenever a far right "conservative"less-government-is-good-government apologist has the termerity to tell the rest of us why"liberalism"is "bad"..Mona Charen excuses the fact that there is a hugh gulf between the rich and the poor in this country by whining that ,in effect,it is not the government's job to be anything more than a turnstile for the rich and the corporations..Calvin Coolidge, one of best examples of what was and is wrong with "conservative"thinking, announced that"The business of America is business"and to that end made no effort to control the corporations of his time, had no safety net programs in place,penny-pinched at the expense of the poor while allowing the rich to live off the public dole, and much much more..Ronald Reagen, the most recent incarnation of the Coolidge do-nothing to help anyone who actually needs help philosophy of government, viewed Coolidge as a role model..Reagen's"Trickle down"economic program, historically, never trickled down, and during Reagen's eight years in office the gap between the rich and the poor became acute..Reagen,like most "conservative"thinkers views big government as only being too big when the tax dollars of the wealthy and the corporations are re-distributed,in the form of"entitlements"to the middle class and the poor..Reagan had no such reservations when "big government"bailed out corporations with tax dollars, and no president conservative or otherwise, since reagen, has had much trouble whenever corporations over-charge the government for goods or services..But these "conservatives"foam at the mouth whenever anyone suggests government financed universal healthcare.."BIG GOVERNMENT"these fakers scream, opting instead to see almost half the population of the nation either with minimal coverage or no coverage at all..These "conservatives" jump up and down over the notion that anyone no fortunate enough to have been born with a silver spoon in the mouth should be entitled to anything from the government...Thus Charon, and others like her ignore the real problems of the country mainly because,as far as they are concerned,"of the people,by the people and FOR THE PEOPLE"is an obsolete term or its application is limited to those who already own 90 per cent of this nation's wealth...
"Useful Idiots" & "Do Gooders" - Mona Charen.......2007-07-31
I was a conservative but, because of the widening income gap between CEOs and working class, Enron, etc. I became a Liberal....until, my local library pulled these books from its shelves and put them on the FOR SALE rack for $.50. I bought them...I read them, and my faith was restored. I was shaken! I reverted to being a Conservative. Now I'm wondering if there are any books out there that indict Conservatives in such a well-documented, well-researcher manner as Ms. Charen's two books. I'd like to get a quality opposing view. Seems that all the really intelligent authors and talking heads are Conservatives. Are there any Liberals that have the intelligence and professionalism a Pat Buchanan, George Will or Mona Charen? Seems like the Liberal spokesmen are all foul-mouthed entertainers like Michael Moore, Al Franken and Bill Maher. Is there anything out that that I can read that is a well-researched, well-documented, well-written answer to "Do Gooders"?
Liberal equals.....hurting America...........2007-05-31
Mona does it again...like her or not just try to argue against the facts she presents.....it is true liberals are hurting all of us in America...good reading for everyone that needs to know the other side of Liberal thinking...it has destroyed most of Europe and now is coming to America.
A must read...for the informed....
Well crafted arguments blaming liberals for everything wrong with America.......2007-05-16
Mona Charen has a simple point of view. There is nothing wrong with America that can not be blamed on liberals. This is a book of polemic, of argument. It is not an attempt at balance; it is an indictment by the District Attorney before sending the Left to Devil's Island.
That said, the book is remarkably good. Charen writes well, and she does her homework. She has a very good argument that liberals really ARE responsible for everything that has gone wrong with America since about 1959. While liberals will have trouble reading this book, they really need to do so; it is as concise a statement of what is wrong with their perspective as they are likely to find anywhere. Likewise, conservatives will enjoy this book, but they will learn from it as well; Charen has done her work so well that will be something new here for virtually everyone.
I have a few nits to pick with Charen's perspective. For example, sorry, but liberals really did get it right when they gave blacks the right to vote in the 1960s and passed the basic civil rights laws. It was shameful that the party of Lincoln opposed these very necessary reforms. Charen does not help herself when she tries to argue that Barry Goldwater was right to oppose civil rights. No, he was not. He betrayed conservative principles by supporting the suppression of equal rights. We should all be ashamed of him, on this issue. And, come on, we can be big enough to admit that the Left got one major issue right in the last 50 years; that hardly weakens the general case Charen is making.

Book Description
This comprehensive book is the first field guide to the birds of The Gambia and Senegal, an area of West Africa popular with birders for its many tropical African birds. The guide provides full accounts of over 660 bird species and depicts nearly all of these in 48 beautiful color plates.
“A first-rate book that is a fine contribution to bird literature. For the birder who has everything, this makes a great gift.”—Roy John, Canadian Field-Naturalist
"A beautiful, succinct and very useful guide to the region's bird life."—Clay E. Corbin, Quarterly Review of Biology
Customer Reviews:
Excellent guide, good detail!.......2006-11-07
I live in Senegal and this is a fabulous book for someone who is living in Senegal or the Gambia. I travel some and have been using the Princeton Illustrated Checklist for Birds of Western & Central Africa - but it is nice to have a more limited list of birds that actually live here. (Makes it easier to identify them!) The illustrations are clear and I appreciated the raptors perched and in flight illustrations. What I also have enjoyed is the detailed info. about each bird in the back of the book - mating habits, flight patterns, breeding, etc. so that I really can learn more about the bird than just its name.
Birds of The Gambia and Senegal.......2001-07-13
The authors and illustrators do a wonderful job on a field guide of the birds of two countries that are not visited very often by birders. Clive Barlow lives in The Gambia and has been the moving force behind the creation of birding conservation efforts in that country. He is the acknowledged living expert of birds of Western Africa. He is also a first-rate field birder. Shortly after the book was published in 1998, my son and I had occasion to visit both Senegal and The Gambia. In Banjul we were most fortunate to meet Clive Barlow and go birding with him for four days. He is one of those rare individuals who has both wonderful identification skills combined with the uncanny ability to locate hard-to-find birds. His obvious love for birds is clearly evident in his handy field guide.
The book is well organized and very tastefully presented. The illustrations are superbly drawn and handy maps let you see the bird's expected range. Mr. Barlow is at his peak in the birds of The Gambia and only slightly less knowledgeable about Senegalese birding--perhaps because The Gambia is generally a much better place to observe birds.
The book is one of my favorite field guides. It is, of course, a must for anyone birding in those two countries or neighboring regions. I wish every area of the world were covered by a guide of this quality. Its creators are to be commended for a very solid, readable, useful and enjoyable field guide.
Too big to fit in pocket, text is good though.......1999-02-05
I recently returned from one month in Mali, where I took the 1977 Collins guide to the birds of West Africa by Serle and Morel. That book could fit in my pocket, this book by Barlow is too wide.
I am new to birdwatching and am used to the Peterson guides with big pictures and pointers to fieldmarks and many illustrations for each species . This book crams 20 or so birds on each page, and puts all the illustrations up at front. It does give a few examples of male/female/immature differences, and it does show raptors overhead. In this it is better than the Collins guide. The pictures seem cartoonish though.
The text is quite helpful and I guess the names of the birds are more up to date. I did not buy this book because I was going to Mali, not Senegal or Gambia. But all of the 60 or so birds that I identified in Mali are also found in this book. The Collins guide did not give me enough help identifying the many small weavers I saw, so I used this Barlow book and my field notes when I returned to the US, and this Barlow book is clearly superior in this case at least.
The Collins book covers all the birds of West Africa, even though nearly half get less than 10 words and no picture. Still, it has to be my first choice for countries other than Gambia and Senegal, especially since it is more portable.
