Customer Reviews:
So modern an art critic.......2007-04-01
Either you love Robert Hughes or you hate Robert Hughes. I consider him the greatest art critic alive and his insights on XX century art are irreplaceable pieces of wit and culture.
This book is a sum of most of the author's articles published in Time Magazine and other medias and covers old masters as well as modern and contemporary artists. The articles on Warhol and Basquiat, as well as the one on the NY art scene, are brilliant. I bought this book when it came out and rereading it recently I saw how utterly modern it still is, considering today's art world.
An outspoken, but honest critique of art.......2006-03-04
An exceedingly thorough, yet entertaining, historical account of great painters of the past as well as of contemporary artists.
Hughes is candid and not influenced by traditional art critique; thus in many cases he offers a new way of looking at painters and paintings.
A Keen and Discerning Critical Eye.......2006-02-20
This collection of magazine reviews and essays, first published in 1990, serves as a short course in the development of American and European art over the last few centuries. The eye is keen, the mind is thoroughly grounded in art history and tradition, and the writing is lucid and provocative. Hughes wrote the magazine pieces while working as the art critic for Time Magazine. They tend to be triggered by major exhibitions of modern artists or major retrospectives of dead ones. Hughes always starts from the work, and deals with the constricted space of the magazine format by isolating something essential about an artist: DeKooning's draftsmanship; Hopper's despair held in abeyance; Pisarro's decency; Pollock as aesthete instead of wild cowboy; the mismatch between Rothko's intellectual aims and artistic strategies. Sandwiched between whiskey ads and the pimping of NBC's new sitcom, Hughes' magazine reviews demonstrate an admirable ability to dissect major paintings and analyze artists without talking down to Time's mass audience.
The longer essays first appeared in venues such as The New York Review of Books and The New Republic. In these pieces, Hughes lets his critical and rhetorical capabilities off the leash. The opening essay gives us Hughes' take on the 1980s New York art scene, which Hughes saw as a "low, dishonest decade," for several interrelated reasons. First, the art being produced did not serve or surpass the modernist tradition that preceded it; for Hughes, all serious art must grapple with what came before it, and figure out how to move beyond it. ("An artist's every action is judged by an unwearying tribunal of the dead.") Intelligent evaluation of the work produced by emerging artists became supplanted by hype. And it's easier to hype a work - and charge outrageous prices for it - if you unmoor it from any serious critical evaluation of what the work is actually achieving. He's right; it does seem like a very far way from Pollock and deKooning to Basquiat and Koons, and not necessarily progress.
Some of the more memorable longer pieces include his take on Warhol's affectless self-promotion, and his dismantling of Baudrillard's bombastic drivel on the essence of America. There's an informative essay on art and money that shows how escalating art prices remove art from the public because museums can't afford to bid against private collectors for major pieces, and because the insurance costs on major works make comprehensive retrospectives fiendishly difficult to assemble. Denied access to visceral experience of a sculpture or painting, aesthetic consensus is increasingly derived from reproduced rather than actual objects. This makes the art world more vulnerable to brilliant promoters like Warhol or clever packagers like Hirsch. As Hughes puts it, "the art world looks more like the fashion industry than itself. . ."
There's a wonderful essay on Goya that traces the connection between Goya's artistic output and his life experiences. Goya's career was in essence a long grapple with one of our central conundrums: do the failings of humankind derive from bad laws and bad rulers, or is there something fundamentally flawed at the core of human nature? To which Goya, having made his way up through the realms of craft, ambition, political maneuvering, fame, liberal ideals, illness and dashed dreams, would have replied, and did reply, yes. Over two centuries later, we haven't moved past where he was, which is why Goya's work still retains its immediacy and power to move us.
Hughes is an entertaining writer and a discerning critic. Some of his takes on the "contemporary" scene have been dated by events of the past three decades, but his grasp of the past is powerful and sure. His trained eye and sense of history help to ground an art world prone to drift skyward propelled only by its own hot air.
Nice reading.......1999-12-10
Short essays, most of them published in Time magazine. Hughes'keen and witty look at several artists - from great masters to contemporary ones. We don't have to agree with everything he says, but he's always objective, concise and inteligent.
THE book of art criticism to buy ..........1999-03-29
I don't know much about art and I'm not even sure I know what I like. But it's obvious that this book is intelligently - and honestly - written, and I'm writing this review mainly to recommend the book to other people who aren't terribly interested in the visual arts. Hughes has made me think more highly of painting in general and made me re-evaluate much of what I thought about the twentieth century. (Don't worry: he also confirmed much of it.) He isn't at all afraid to announce that the emperor has no clothes - so on those occasions when he confirms that the emperor is, in fact, fully dressed, I am much more inclined to believe him.
Wittily written, too.

Customer Reviews:
I found it boring.......2000-12-13
There was no description of the book when I bought it, so I did not realize that it was a dry technical read. It is not for the creative person, and offers little to nothing on the how to make dynamic layered audio in post. It's about notch filters, and VITC timecode. Very techincal, very non-creative. Maybe that's the point, but is wasn't for me.

Customer Reviews:
A great graduation gift!.......2004-12-17
Having read several post-college books and finding them depressing and/or overly pompous in their applications of general 'self-help' principles, this book was a breath of fresh air and exactly what the recent college graduate needs. Instead of boring them with psycological babble or elementary examples of growth (like 'buying a 'little dog'' to represent growth away from paterns we didn't think we would adopt) that insult their intelligence, 'Now may be a good time to panic' has created an environment where the typical self-help, post-college help (i.e. telling people what they want to hear) is not applied. Rather, Jon and Jon have established a book to lighten the atmosphere a bit and show college grads that everything changes and that nothing should be taken too seriously by using their unique blend of humor (more of a blend of Dave Berry, Steve Martin, and Douglas Adams).
My suggestion? Buy, read and enjoy!

Book Description
Michael Tippett's oratorio A Child of Our Time was written at the beginning of the second world war as an expression of "man's inhumanity to man." This Handbook discusses the significant musical and literary features of this remarkable work within its specific historical, social and stylistic context. Attention is given to the shaping of Tippett's own text as well as its musical representation. Also of importance is the initial critical reception of the work, a reception that defined certain responses that still surround the work today.

Book Description
Show parents how to help their children break free of the artificial limitations placed upon them by society's gender and cultural expectations!
This book presents both theoretical and practical ideas for integrating gender and culture into parenting. Unlike other books on the subject, this one examines interventions and activities, and suggests discussion topics that provide children with the skills to become critical consumers and thinkers. You'll learn to help children discover and celebrate who they are, while infusing the message that they should notice and challenge exaggerated stereotypes of gender and ethnicity.
From the editor: "If therapists can coach parents in helping to inoculate their children, beginning at early ages, against the negative effects of gender socialization, perhaps the work of developing equal relationships in their friendships and intimate relationships will be less taxing as they grow and mature. Additionally, as children are taught to challenge rigid gender and ethnicity messages, perhaps they will feel a greater sense of flexibility as they dream about who they want to become and how they want to live their lives."
This essential book will teach you to help children defeat the harmful media messages they're bombarded by. Integrating Gender and Culture in Parenting:
presents 20 simple ideas and 5 group activities to teach children about social justice in our everyday lives
explores parental socialization practices and the values transmitted to school-aged and young adult offspring, focusing on the way parents' teaching styles integrate race and gender
investigates the parenting practices of middle-class, dual-earner couples who feel that they are successfully balancing family and workwith a look at the specific strategies these couples use to achieve an appropriate balance
shows what family therapists should know about sexuality education, and highlights the specific roles that feminist family therapists can play with parents, children, and adolescents to help children be more sexually responsible and less likely to put themselves in sexually risky situations
examines the gender messages found in 63 articles from the top three selling parenting magazines in the United States
In addition, you'll find two revealing and insightful chapters in which interviewer Lori Lund discusses the cultural scripting that American boys and girls are subjected to, with:
Jackson Katzone of America's leading anti-sexist male activists and the creator/director of the United States Marine Corps Gender Violence Prevention Program, and Mary Pipherrespected sociologist, educator, and bestselling author of Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls and Hunger Pains

Snakes in the Cockpit: Images of Military Aviation Disasters
ASIN: 185260574X |
Book Description
Every year, a number of military aircraft ranging from single-seat fighters to fully laden cargo planes are lost in accidents. Because these disasters often occur in remote corners of the world and rarely involve members of the general public, they seldom attract the sort of media attention given to those disasters which involve civil aircraft.
In this, the first volume to systematically document and describe military aviation disasters, author David Gero has assembled a century of mishaps, beginning with the loss of a Wright flyer that was being demonstrated for the U.S. Army in 1908. In addition to the aircraft types and serial numbers, and times, places, and causes, there are copies of accident reports and previously unpublished photographs of crash sites. Also includes combat losses involving transport aircraft and gliders.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing History.......2005-04-24
Ever wonder about not wanting to fly because you're afraid of crashing into a mountain? After browsing "Military Aviation Disasters", you won't wonder any more. This book documents dozens and dozens of military planes crashing into mountains even in the "modern" age of flight technology. One can only imagine how many more civilian aviation planes have crashed into mountains during the history of flight.
David Gero defines a "Significant Loss" as those incidents where at least 20 people lost their lives, but also includes in this volume a few other incidents that were "particularly noteworthy." You'll find military accidents from countries all over the world included.
I bought this book because I'm a fan of the Lockheed Orion P-3 aircraft, and there are three P-3 incidents described here. I found it amazing how many years the military persued the use of blimps in the early 1900s despite horrific accidents occuring on a regular basis. Also included is the 1972 crash of the airplane carrying the Uruguayan rugby team over the Andes Mountains where the survivors committed canibalism (which has been made famous by a movie).
Each incident described has the date, approximate time, location, aircraft type, and the operator of the aircraft. The text of the incident describes the weather conditions and the apparent cause of the incident (when that information has been released). Almost every two-page spread has at least one photo or diagram.

Invaluable but incomplete.......2001-06-04
Gero has done the aviation safety community a great service by putting out this book. Students of the subject would be well advised to read it cover to cover. The most noteworthy content is the peek behind the veil at former Soviet accidents (which may have been the impetus for the writing of the book in the first place).
Where Gero falls short is in his failure to mention a number of well-documented, high-profile accidents with significant implications to public safety. For example, the June 1995 crash of a B-52 at Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington made international news, but is not discussed in this book. A 2002 update of both this book and his equally readable "Air Disasters", perhaps combined in a single volume, would be welcome to both add to the current content and bring attention to the final rulings on a number of high-profile accidents that occurred in the late 1990s.
Book Description
For over a decade now, the reigning consensus has held that the combination of free markets and democracy would transform the third world and sweep away the ethnic hatred and religious zealotry associated with underdevelopment. In this astute, original, and surprising investigation of the true impact of globalization, Yale Law School professor Amy Chua explains why many developing countries are in fact consumed by ethnic violence after adopting free market democracy.
Chua shows how in non-Western countries around the globe, free markets have concentrated starkly disproportionate wealth in the hands of a resented ethnic minority. These “market-dominant minorities” – Chinese in Southeast Asia, Croatians in the former Yugoslavia, whites in Latin America and South Africa, Indians in East Africa, Lebanese in West Africa, Jews in post-communist Russia – become objects of violent hatred. At the same time, democracy empowers the impoverished majority, unleashing ethnic demagoguery, confiscation, and sometimes genocidal revenge. She also argues that the United States has become the world’s most visible market-dominant minority, a fact that helps explain the rising tide of anti-Americanism around the world. Chua is a friend of globalization, but she urges us to find ways to spread its benefits and curb its most destructive aspects.

"Provocative, evocative, nuanced, and highly readable.... Amy Chua deserves our gratitude."
THE WASHINGTON POST
"Fascinating and disturbing... with an authority born of rigorous research."
BUSINESS WEEK
"World on Fire deserves to be widely read. It is a welcome antidote to the recycled mantras of the market-cheering right and the tired rhetoric of the anti-globalization left."
THE AMERICAN PROSPECT
"Superb.... Encourages us to confront the world as it is, and our actual place in it, with a humane and intellectually formidable imagination."
THE NEW YORK OBSERVER
"A riveting and original book that challenges key tenets of American political faith."
THE BALTIMORE SUN
"This hard-hitting book should be read by everyone who still imagines that free markets can solve all the world's ills. Chua's work is provocative, creative, and important; it turns conventional wisdom on its head, and no one interested in globalization can afford to ignore it."
BARBARA EHRENREICH, AUTHOR OF NICKEL AND DIMED: ON (NOT) GETTING BY IN AMERICA
"Provocative.... Shocking.... It should make Americans think twice about exporting their political culture wholesale without a thought of who dislikes whom."
SEATTLE TIMES
"[World on Fire] makes for compelling reading and sounds a sobering warning that should be heeded by all supporters and critics of globalization."
MILWAUKEE JOURNAL-SENTINEL
"A profound book, written in plain English, and challenging the very foundations of some glib -- and dangerous -- assumptions behind American foreign policy. This book should be read in the highest circles of decision-making, as well as by all those who like to consider themselves 'thinking people.' It should provoke some re-thinking -- and, for some, really thinking for the first time."

Customer Reviews:
Well Written, Interesting and Important .......2007-10-14
Amy Chua has written a book which is both interesting and important. And - hooray! - it's also reader-friendly. Unlike the works of many other university professors, Chua's writing is lively and engaging. She writes with the clarity of an excellent instructor and with the passion of a person who has lost a member of her family to ethnic violence.
Chua, a professor at the Yale Law School, explains much of the violence in the world today. She writes that, in many of the world's troubled nations, an ethnic minority holds the vast majority of the wealth while an ethnic majority lives in relative (or absolute) poverty. Naturally, this imbalance of wealth leads to hate and to periodic conflict.
And Chua goes two steps further. If you extend this argument from a single nation to a region, it's easy to see why Israel is hated by its neighbors throughout the Middle East. And if you go one more step and look at Chua's argument on a world-wide level, it's also easy to understand why the United States is hated by many of the have-not nations of the world.
Regarding the book's sub-title, "How Exporting Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability," Chua offers - The Untied States works hard to spread both capitalism and democracy around the world. Sounds good, right? But according to Chua, advancing both capitalism and democracy simultaneously actually makes matters worse. For when we spread capitalism, we enrich the already-wealthy ethnic minority. And when we spread democracy, we give votes to the have-not majority. And this combination is a formula for violence.
Required Reading for Republicans .......2007-10-10
The title of my review is meant to impress the members of the political party most in need of enlightenment on issues near and dear to their conservative hearts. Amy Chua's magnificent book clearly exposits the perils of willy nilly, incoherent application of the standard Republican mantra of free markets and democracy being the cure for all that ails mankind. She does NOT blame either for causing unrest and violence (as several of the neo-con reviwers have erroneously asserted) but she does make the case that both facilitate and emboldens majorities who have long felt oppressed by "econimically dominant minorities." In the hands of democratically elected demagogues (like Slobodan Milosevic in Serbian Yugoslavia) who use xenophobia to scare its majority constituents (sound familiar, Lou Dobbs fans?), these festering resentments frequently erupt in bloody confrontations, and Chua lists several examples (anti-Chinese attacks in post-Suharto Indonesia, Tutsi slughter by Hutus in Rwanda.) She also points out that the draconian financial austerity measures usually imposed on Third World countries by the IMF and World Bank (both US dominated) actually exacerbates the wealth inequalities by further consolidating the monopolization of economies by the resident ethnic minorities with financial acumen and established business networks. This further aggravates the spiral and cycle of resentment. She also convincingly makes the case that the US promotes a type of "democracy" and "free market economy" that we ourselves took 200 years to acquire or do not even practice today. The right to vote was only gradually granted universally to all regardless of property owning status, and the kind of laissez faire, anything-goes economic markets have been relatively restrained (well, until the corrupt GOP-led Congress further prostituted that body)by such policies as anti-trust legislation and social reduistributive programs. Expecting nations with little tradition in either area to convert overnight is simply ridiculuous and doomed to fail. Iraq will be the latest disaster in neo-con foreign policy conversion. The result of our illegal invasion will be perpetual civil war, with both sides jockeying for bigger and bigger slices of the financial handout pie, freshly baked by Joe Sucker Taxpayer. The only free markets Bush is interested in is the freedom to continue looting Iraq of its oil. Indeed, the US is very hypocritical when it comes to free market sloganeering. We protect markets all the time (ask agricultural product growers) and demand complete access for our products (increasingly becoming less and less, as the Chinese take over). Chua's book should be required reading for all neo-cons that think one size of democracy and free markets fit all.
Brilliant and mind-shifting.......2007-04-25
For someone who used to hate reading economics books, this book was a breeze. Amy Chua has cleverly and clearly explained why economic and social development in developing countries should have an inside-out approach. Western models don't always work and I've seen and experienced this, having worked for the Philippine government and dealing with consultants from international development agencies, and foreign consultants in general who come to the Philippines to recommend policies and systems that have been successfully implemented elsewhere. Each country is different, and each culture is unique. There is no one right answer to problems - so beware of consultants who have ready, packaged solutions.
Culture is the Underlying Motivation for All Decisions.......2007-02-04
I have been recommending Amy Chua's book, WORLD ON FIRM, for several years now. I think from an academic standpoint, it is far more valuable than that of THE WORLD IS FLAT by Thomas Friedman. Chua is an academic, but also the child of immigrants from another country. She has lived experience in her writings from cultural and ethnographic viewpoints, and not simply from the "gee wiz it's business" that Friedman tends to favor.
Chua's book is the first book I have seen on globalization that talks about culture in a clear and valuable sense.
I will continue to recommend her book to all of my undergraduate and MBA students and I hope she either updates this book for a future date or writes again on this topic.

A profound book.......2007-01-27
This is a very profound book. It deserves to be widely read and discussed. Chua is way before her time.
Contrary to what you may think upon reading the title, this book is not anti-free market or anti-globalization. It is a reality check. In numerous areas of the world, ethnic minorities hold disproportionate economic power. This creates resentment(envy really) among the majority group. Add democracy to the mix, and you can imagine what kinds of lunatics can be elected. For obscure reasons, this situation is virtually ignored until yet another vicious bloodbath manifests. And even then, people fail to understand what has really happened. Regardless, the problem is not going to go away by itself.

The Bible of Birds in South Asia.......2007-09-21
A must-have for anyone serious about birds in India. A monumental effort the likes of which only Ali, Ripley and TJ were capable of.
Get one, it's the ultimate reference guide.
Goes without saying this is not a field guide, for that I'd recommend Grimett, Inskip, Inskipp's guide to the birds of India.Pocket Guide to Birds of the Indian Subcontinent
Excellent Book from The Bombay Natural History Society.......2004-08-03
This is an excellent book from the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and published by the OUP. It is a book that gives the complete list of all the different species and sub-species with the modern geographical and geo-geographical boundaries. A must for any bird watcher, amatuer or prefessional, student or researcher, bird lover and traveller to the great Indian Sub-continent.
This book shall be a great value addition when read with other great titles and publications of the BNHS
Book Description
1200 species of birds, in 20 Orders and numerous Families, are known to occur in the Indian subcontinent. This Handbook describes the 1200 species by distribution, habits, breeding biology, diet, voice, and other features. Over 100 plates and systematic keys in the text aid identification. Maps show the distribution of many migratory and spatially restricted forms, and a number of line drawings illustrate diagnostic features such as bills and feet. This new Compact edition brings together the text of all ten volumes of the original Handbook, with 106 plates by the famous American bird painter John Henry Dick depicting all the bird species found in that region. The text and black-and-white text illustrations of the Handbook appear here photographically reduced by 30%, with four pages of the original occupying one page of the Compact Edition. They remain legible to the normal eye, however. The colour plates appear in the same size as in the original editions.
