Customer Reviews:
Great Replacement for our old book.......2007-01-17
I managed to have this book added as an alternate after fighting for years to teach another text, Humanities Through the Arts. That text had a very bad habit of talking in circles and I spent more time trying to explain the book than I did teaching the course. Our students normally have little to no exposure to the Arts and are easily discouraged. Not only is this little book half the price of the other but it is very straight forward in its approach. If you want a book that offers lots of chapters for testing purposes this isn't it. If you want a book that nails down the basics, especially if you do a lot of group work and use projects rather than test, this text nails down the basics..
Pretty good book.......2005-01-02
I have taught a course on the Humanities using this book, and found it mostly spot on in its specific contents. How to present all of the Humanities using one paperback? But - with just a few exceptions - this presents a good first look and useful rules of thumb in approaching the various disciplines. In areas that are underserved, such as Landscape Art, it actually fills a void. I recommend it and will use it again.
Informative.......2004-01-05
I used this book for my introduction to fine arts class and thought it was very good. Easy to understand and follow, and gave good information straight out without haveing to search for defintions or other stuff.
If it were possible...........2003-11-17
If it were possible to describe this book in stars it would be 0 stars. Here are just a few of the problems found within the text. 1) Writing is boring. 2) Some of the pictures are repeated in the black & white sections. 3) The usage of webpages instead of having illustrations & pictures makes the text boring. 4) No companion website for the web addresses noted.
In other words - it can bore a student to death!

Book Description
A collection of the best and most durable humor columns by St. Petersburg Times editorial cartoonist/humorist Don Addis, whose gift for writing humor has been recognized and exploited by his happy employers for over a quarter of a century. Politics, government, love, social habits, fads, foolish behaviors, news events whose silliness grow more comical with time, rhapsodizations on the wacky way we are—all seen through the uniquely warped vision of a professional comic artist who knows absurdity when he sees it and knows how to put a point on it.
Book Description
As the blackface minstrel show evolved from its beginnings in the American Revolution to its peak during the late 1800s, its frenetic dances, low-brow humor, and lively music provided more than mere entertainment. Indeed, these imitations and parodies shaped society's perceptions of African Americans-and of women-as well as made their mark on national identity, policymaking decisions, and other entertainment forms such as vaudeville, burlesque, the revue, and, eventually, film, radio, and television. Gathered here are rare primary materials-including firsthand accounts of minstrel shows, minstrelsy guides, jokes, sketches, and sheet music-and the best of contemporary scholarship on minstrelsy.

History of Minstrelsy with Commentary.......2007-01-11
I reccommend Inside the Minstrel Mask. A fascinating survey of the minstrel show, including some of the songs and skits that were popular.
Also includes some astute analysis.

Book Description
In Creating Cooperation, Pepper D. Culpepper explains the successes and failures of human capital reforms adopted by the French and German governments in the 1990s. Employers and employees both stand to gain from corporate investment in worker skills, but uncertainty and mutual distrust among companies doom many policy initiatives to failure. Higher skills benefit society as a whole, so national governments want to foster them. However, business firms often will not invest in training that makes their workers more attractive to other employers, even though they would prefer having better-skilled workers.
Culpepper sees in European training programs a challenge typical of contemporary problems of public policy: success increasingly depends on the ability of governments to convince private actors to cooperate with each other. In the United States as in Europe, he argues, policy-makers can achieve this goal only by incorporating the insights of private information into public policy. Culpepper demonstrates that the lessons of decentralized cooperation extend to industrial and environmental policies. In the final chapter, he examines regional innovation programs in the United Kingdom and the clean-up of the Chesapeake Bay in the United States-a domestic problem that required the coordination of disparate agencies and stakeholders.

A Good Text Is Hard To Find.......2007-05-15
All About Early Care and Education is written by a handful of field experts in a clean and simple format. Make no mistake, the simplicity of this text has not sacrificed quality or content. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned professional, you will enjoy reading this text because of the practical approach to childcare. The black and white soft cover book is advertised as a self-study text and it would be nice to see a review section for each chapter, which this text does not have.
Fine, fine text for the associate arts student.......2006-10-10
I would recommend this book for use in a vocational school course or program directed at students seeking early childhood certificates or associate of arts degrees in early care and development.
As the cover tells us, it covers all of the CDA (Child Development Associate) competencies. It's easy to read, yet covers theory and application with integrity.
I would definitely get it!
Book Description
'We must all fight for Holy Russia!' declared the Russian officers at the outbreak of the Crimean War. Despite the immensity of the Russian forces that fought in this conflict, however, their dispersion over vast distances, along with poor roads and contrary weather, contributed to their defeat. Still, many regiments won much-deserved battle honours; from the navy emerged a number of heroes, including Admirals Kornilov, Nakhimov and Istomin. This book details the forces that served the Tsar in the defence of the Crimea, with chapters on Army organization, the Army of the Caucasus, the Imperial Navy, army life, tactics and Russian heroes.
Book Description
In the halls of Congress and on the front pages of a growing number of mainstream periodicals, impeachment is being discussed more and more widely. And many leading constitutional scholars agree: There has never been so strong a case for impeachment since Richard Nixon.
In this gripping new book, one of our nation's leading institutions of constitutional scholarship, the Center for Constitutional Rights, sets out the legal arguments for impeachment detailing four separate charges: warrantless surveillance, misleading Congress on the reasons for the Iraq war, violating laws against torture, and subverting the Constitution's separation of powers. It is, say the CCR attorneys, a case of black letter law, with abundant evidence.
The book also contains the relevant laws and legal precedents. It explains what the Constitution says about impeachment and gives a brief history of impeachment, its procedures, and previous articles of impeachment against presidents Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton.

A Critical Look at a National Crisis.......2007-04-21
When I first began the book, I didn't think it would be able to change my mind that Bush, while incompetent, had done anything that would rise to the level of impeachable offense. This book, however, with its succinct style did change my mind. I am not sure we actually should impeach him, but I do, now, believe his behavior rises to a level where he could be impeached.
The book, written by a team of lawyers, is written as the articles of impeachment would be laid out against the President. It is well written, and contains explanations of why each item is an impeachable offense. In addition, the appendix holds a wealth of information, including the articles of impeachment that were written for Johnson, Nixon and Clinton.
I would recommend that this book be read by anyone who thinks that Bush should not be impeached, as well as anyone interested in how it could be done. I cannot guarantee it will change your mind, but it certainly will make you think.
impeachment myth.......2007-03-14
There are certainly many books revolving around impeachment. The problem, none of them hold up. Take this books acertion that there were warrantless surveillance. First the govt can investigate under the war powers of the president. Lets assume the constitution clause for warrants applies. Well the constitution states "unreasonable". 911 certainly gives the govt reason to investigate possible terrorist activites without a warrant. All acusations can be dismissed as easily. Besides if the iraq war is an impeachable offense than you would have to chage congress as well. After all they paid for it. Mrs Bill Clinton would have to be charges as well. I wonder if that will make it into and leftest book.
read it NOW!.......2007-01-14
The Center for Constitutional Rights, a non-profit organization (founded in 1966 by civil rights attorneys working in the South) dedicated to protecting the citizen rights guaranteed by the Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, has produced a vital, easy-to-read compendium of the dereliction of George W Bush, including a trenchant four-page introduction by William Goodman, legal director of CCR. By the formulating of four articles of impeachment, Bush's crimes come quickly into full relief, even to the basest kind of awareness of the daily events we are living through, providing along the way a surprisingly broad picture of the degredation of a nation brought low by an ignorant, bullying president, complicit corporate media, and the pathetic, even terrifying, witlessness of a society near-mystically obsessed by acquisition and consumption. Other reviews here have adequately detailed the impeachment articles. Nearly fifty pages of appendices include excerpts from the Constitution on impeachment, a useful history of impeachment, the Articles of Impeachment against Andrew Johnson, Nixon and Clinton, and pertinent notes on procedure. Finally, the book offers an extremely useful one-page webliography with links to information germane to a deeper understanding of the book's thesis. Recommended to every fellow citizen. Stop consuming! Wake up! Start reading, start thinking! Take action! WE are the nation, a power greater than any thug president, and certainly a people capable of repudiating the gross bandit who seeks day by day to diminish our birthright. The time is NOW! Also recommended is Elizabeth Holtzman's excellent 'The Impeachment of George W Bush: A Practical Guide for Concerned Citizens'.
A strong case for impeachment.......2006-11-04
Even if there were enough time left to impeach the head of the current regime in Washington, it would probably not make any lasting changes in the conduct of the U.S. government nor change the minds of the many people who support it. To speak of impeachment is therefore more of a catharsis to those who dislike the current regime. However, the fact remains that there has been much discussion in the legal community, especially in the area of constitutional law, concerning the evidence for impeachment of G.W. Bush. A few books have appeared that address the case, this one being one of the shortest on the market. It is interesting reading and avoids the temptation to engage in the negative diatribe that frequently surrounds discussion of the legality of the actions and of the morality of the current regime. It is doubtful that G.W. Bush will be impeached in the next two years, but the book could still serve as a didactic tool that illustrates how constitutional scholars put together a case for impeachment. It could also serve as a framework for evaluating the actions of a future administration, and possibly help to avert illegalities in such an administration.
Careful observations of Bush's demeanor in the time after 9/11 and before the beginning of the brutal invasion of Iraq reveals (with a fair level of confidence) that he was being deceptive in his justification for that invasion and for NSA spying programs. But such an analysis would not satisfy the needs of constitutional law. To prove lying in the legal sense requires one to show intent, and this is very difficult. The Center for Constitutional Rights however argues in this book that such a proof may not be necessary, at least for the case of NSA spying, since it was "blatantly illegal." The section "Article 1" in the book discusses the Center's reasoning in more detail. Noticeably absent in the discussion are any names of U.S. citizens who were actually spied upon by the NSA. This apparently is not required in developing a constitutional case for impeachment. An admission by the president that such spying occurred is sufficient. The Center states in the article that administration officials have admitted this, but the names of these officials and the names of the citizens subjected to this intrusion are not given.
The strongest case for impeachment discussed in the book concerns the willful violation of the United Nations Charter, which as the Center argues, is a treaty of the United States signed by the president and was ratified by the Senate. The president is therefore constitutionally obligated to respect this treaty, which prohibits the initiation of force against another country unless authorized by the UN Security Council or in self-defense. The Center reminds the reader that the UN Charter does not hold a "preventive" attack, i.e. an attack against a country with the belief that doing so may prohibit a future attack from that country, to be justified from the standpoint of self-defense. The war against Iraq was therefore a violation of the president's oath of office, and this warrants impeachment. It is the opinion of this reviewer that this article of impeachment is sufficient grounds to impeach G.W. Bush, and no other justification is needed. Again, actual impeachment hearings will not happen, due to the short amount of time left for this regime to be in office, but the fact that this book was written indicates that there are some people that are willing to stand up to the current regime and not engage in the blind sycophancy, the unquestioned loyalty, that is expressed by so many of its supporters.
PROJECT CENSORED calls this movement one of its most under-reported stories.......2006-10-16
Yet several substantial books available here on amazon call for Bush's impeachment upon solid constitutional legal standing.
Even though this may appear physically the briefest of the bunch in its reasons for impeachment, its authors are practiced lawyers and scholars of American jurisprudence who cull those articles of impeachment which have the greatest standing in a court of law.
Indeed, the fact it is written by lawyers in a manner so clear even the layperson can understand it speaks wonders for this book and for the lawyers involved, ordinarily masters of the purposefully obscure.
The fact this slim treatise is compelling and convincing reading speaks volumes to the validity of its articles and to the fine technical ability of its writers.
Book Description
The classical and most accurate guide on Argentine birds.
Customer Reviews:
Hopelessly amateuristic.......2007-08-02
This book is depressingly poor, especially considering its price. Some are touting it because the descriptions, images (paintings) and range maps for each species appear together. Bravo! That would be lovely if they were useful, but the maps are too small, the descriptions too brief and vague, and the paintings are (I'm tempted to say "hopelessly") amateuristic. Quality of the illustrations not withstanding, all good modern field guides depict similar (e.g., congenric) species in the same pose so key differences are conspicuous. This field guide seems to go out of its way to do the opposite, featuring as many poses as species, making it essentially impossible to determine essential field marks. There must be something better. If not, avoid Argentina and bird Afghanistan! The result is bound to be more positive.
"THE" Field Guide.......2001-08-05
It's an excellent field guide. The little maps with each bird showing the distribution area makes the identification fast and easy. Drawings are very good and so are id clues. I think that due to printing problems sometimes the colors are not so accurate (few cases). If you are coming to Argentina to watch birds, is a must (I'm not the author cousin).
Book Description
South America, though home to about one-third of the world's bird species and twice as many endemic families of birds as any other continent, has the world's sparsest population of birdwatchers. Birds of Southern South America and Antarctica illustrates and describes all the known species--more than 1,000 of them--in a vast swath of this underexplored birder's paradise, from Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, southern Brazil, and Uruguay to parts of Antarctica. Just some of the birds it covers are teals, tinamous, chachalacas, conebills, cuckoos, macaws, parakeets, parrots, penguins, nightjars, hummingbirds, ovenbirds, tyrants, and tanagers. The habitats range from torrid rainforests and cloudforests to grasslands, the world's driest desert, second highest mountain range, and ice caps.
The 97 color plates depict each species' male in breeding plumage, with the female and young often shown as well. On the facing page are concise textual descriptions of each species, highlighting not only salient physical features and behavioral patterns but the calls or songs of each. Casual birders and ornithologists contemplating a journey to the region, or simply interested in a one-volume overview of its bird life, will not want to miss this book.
Customer Reviews:
Weak.......2007-08-09
I don't believe there is a good choice at this time. We are headed to Brazil on a birding trip soon. Of about 720 birds that we might reasonably see in the areas we are to visit according to various compiled trip reports, this book only covered 60%. In addition, the pictures on the facing page from the text, were in almost random order. I used the Clements book on Peru to fill in 3/4 of the missing birds.
Consider an alternative guide!!.......2007-02-25
This guide book covers a wide range of habitats: from the jungle tropics to the southern tip of the continent and even Antactica. If you are going to be traveling widely, this guide might well be your best bet. The illustrations are good and the descriptions on the facing page are quite useful. The major drawback is that the distribution maps are at the back and that's annoying. (Once you've found an illustration that seems to identify the bird you're seeing, you need to note both the plate and illustration number before heading back to the range maps to see if it's likely to be found in your present location. All too often I found that wasn't the case!)
If you're going to do your birdwatching in or near the mountains or along the southern coast, I'd suggest that you carefully consider, instead, Birds of Chile by Jaramillo et al, a Princeton Guide. It's a superb field guide with many illustrations of the birds in flight, as well as sitting still; its descriptions are excellent and the range maps are on the facing page. I bought a copy of it on my return from Patagonia and it's definitely the guide I'll take next time -- not only to Chile, but to southern Argentina, as well!
Very Portable and Useful Little Guide.......2007-01-18
I am going birding in Bolivia -- which does not yet have it's own field guide -- later this year. So instead of carrying one guide I need to figure out which combination of books will strike a balance between usefulness and space/weight. I have a feeling this is going to be one of my main resources. It is very portable and so far about 85 percent of the birds I may potentially see are in here. In no way is this book intended to replace a full scale field guide such as "Birds of Columbia" by Hilty or "Birds of the High Andes" but then again it is less than one quarter the size and weight. Also, FYI -- it is quite a bit more than merely an illustrated checklist: you do get a small one paragraph description for each bird, a range map at the back which is a little inconvenient but many full size guides use this format also. The book is probably a little out of date as far as some of the finer points of taxonomy -- but many of the recent arguments are at least explained. All in all -- I feel this will be a very useful book to have along, though it will definitely not be the only book I'll have along.
Southern South America Field Guide.......2007-01-11
This appears to be a compact but comprehensive field guide to the birds of southern South America. The art work is adequate, but the plates are crowded and disorganized, and it is sometimes difficult to find the specific number you are looking for to coordinate with the printed information. The other drawback is that the range maps are at the back of the book, a failing common to many older guides. In the absence of anything better, this should serve the purpose well.
A better guide for Argentina..........2006-07-06
I found this guide to be occasionally inaccurate and lacking much needed info for any serious birding, though it is useful as a backup/reference for other area guides. Instead of this book, I recommend you consider "Birds of Argentina & Uruguay" by Tito Narosky and Dario Yzurieta. If not easy to find on Amazon, try Birdlife International, or just pick up a copy in Buenos Aires.
