Book Description
From the mid-1860s to the mid-1880s two artistic legends, Paul Cazanne and Camille Pissarro, executed numerous paintings side by side as they worked in Pontoise and Auvers. This book accompanies an exhibition of 74 paintings and 8 drawings that embody the core of the two artists' collaboration and explores their artistic relationship in detail. Their dynamic interaction began with their first meeting at the Academie Suisse, Paris, circa 1861, and continued through much of their careers. To examine the techniques that Cazanne and Pissarro adopted in response to each other's work, the exhibition and book juxtapose related works by both artists, reuniting many of them for the first time since they were created. The friendship between Cazanne and Pissarro was of considerable importance within the development of early modernism. An essay by Joachim Pissarro discusses this fascinating interchange and offers new insights into both the shared and the distinctive elements of the two artists' aesthetic sensibility.

Pizzaro & Cezanne together again!.......2006-03-17
Wow! This is a book not to be missed for those who love Impressionism and the contrast between two of the greats in a way scarecely ever shown. They were friends - mentor and student - and drew inspiration from each other over the years until the student (Cezanne) finally departed South and became his own (and more famous) man. But oh the beauty of Pizarro's work!

A Fine Catalogue of an Important Exhibition: Dialogues of Cezanne and Pissarro.......2005-10-02
Though this book is a catalogue for an important exhibition traveling to the West Coast after its origin in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, it is so finely produced and contains such important information along with generous examples of the works of two significant artists that it is sure to become a major contribution to the history of art libraries around the world. It is beautiful to peruse, intelligently written and opens a window into one of the more interesting and productive friendships in art history.
Meeting in art school in the 1860's Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) and Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) continued a mutually beneficial camaraderie for twenty years, during which time they produced not only beautiful paintings but also defined an important transitional period in art. While many view Pissarro as the echt-Impressionist, and Cézanne as the pioneering Post-Impressionist, essayist Joachim Pissarro's text questions the significance of these preconceived art history monikers in codifying each artist's stance in the overall view of art history. The true significance in the development of their friendship and dialogues about art, as captured in their painting together in Pontoise and Auvers, France, lead to the development of Modernism in painting.
Wisely and elegantly designed, this book places works by each artist side by side, illuminating the interplay of the two master painters and allowing the viewer to absorb the similarities as well as the disparities that created such a powerful dialogue and relationship and explores how each artist sought new ways to express the visualized scene before him. This is a very fine monograph, vividly encouraging all art lovers to seek attendance at the exhibition wherever possible. Grady Harp, October 05

Book Description
Progress in computer animation has gained such a speed that, before long, computer-generated human faces and figures on screen will be indistinguishable from those of real humans. The potential both for scripted films and real-time interaction with users is enormous. However, in order to cope with this potential, these faces and figures must be guided by autonomous personality agents. This carefully arranged volume presents the state of the art in research and development in making synthetic actors more autonomous. The papers describe the different approaches and solutions developed by computer animation specialists, computer scientists, experts in AI, psychologists and philosophers, from leading laboratories world-wide. Finally, a bibliography comprising more than 200 entries enable further study.

An Ok Collection.......2000-12-30
Welcome to the 21st Century! We are in great luck to have achieved a massivy parallel power to enable us to create "real" figures to synthetic actors. Now all that is needed is to create personalities. Also there is a potential ability of extracting the personality of an actor. This would have a tremendous impact into all fields: 1)The actors can improve themselves by seeing themselves acting. 2)Virtual entities can be constructed to ineract with a "human" actor. The human actor will be ported into a world where these charcters exist. 2)The stunt (wo)men could instruct the computer into doing very dangerous stunts where it would be impossible to do otherwise. 3)Psychological there would be no more obsessions with actors that sell a lot with an image of a "hard to get" style. So people who are in some sense "innocent" would create the virtual actor of their dream and leave the real person alone to do some acting instead of social relationships that can be dangerous. With a guidance of a human psychologer these situations can be left into oblivion. An interactive studio that the patient can understand his obsession and get over it. 4)These belong into the next millenium of 21st century a plain reader can not understand the rest yet....
All these will be feasible into the next 25 years! Get ready...

Good Read For Any Guthrie Fan!.......1997-01-26
Woody, more than anyone, symbolizes what it takes to be an American in this folksy biography that followed his much acclaimed "Bound for Glory" in 1941. Definitely worth owning
Book Description
In 1823 Texas was opened to American settlement; over the next 12 years thousands took advantage of the opportunity. During this time the corrupt Santa Anna rose to power. A dishonest and ruthless politician, thief, compulsive gambler, opium addict and liar, he nevetheless gained a measure of popular support and set about destroying federalism. Conflict with the American settlers ('Texians') became inevitable, a conflict which included the legendary Battle of the Alamo. Philip Haythornwaite covers the story of the War of Texan Independence in a volume backed by a wealth of illustrations and photographs, including eight full page colour plates by Paul Hannon
Customer Reviews:
Good Text, but poor quality plates.......2002-06-12
Philip Haythornthwaite does a good job of condensing the Texas Revolution into the Osprey format. He covers the basic causes, then looks at the organization and equipment of both the Texians and the Mexican forces. Sad to say, the plates are poor quality.
A pot bellied James Bowie is shown wearing a fireman's red bib front shirt. Sorry, these didn't exist in 1836. Sam Houston is shown as a white haired old man. In truth, Houston was in his prime during the Texas War. Crockett is shown wearing some un-identifiable fur cap, possibly a skunk. This is another area of debate. Travis looks more like Laurence Harvey from John Wayne's film. The Mexian soldiers fare little better. At least they are not shown wearing sombreros. Hannon does a poor job depicting weapons and his research is careless. If you can ignore the plates, get this book for Haythornthwaites writing. I'd like to see this book re-issued with new plates by Mike Chappell.
Excellent source book on Texan Independence.......2001-06-21
This book, in its few pages, gives an excellent overview of the events leading up to and during the War of Texas Independence. The color plates on the uniforms are most helpful for the reenactor. While it is not the last word on the subject, it will get you off to a good start.
Excellent Quick History of the Texas Revolution.......2001-06-07
This is a 48 page primer on the Texas Revolution which features 8 full color plates of uniforms worn by both sides, black & white photos of battle sites, reenactors, drawings of historic flags, an order of battle for the Mexican Army in Texas, diagrams of fortified sites (Alamo & La Bahia), artistic representations, simplified maps, etc.
For those who visit the Alamo and want to know more, for those who have seen the classic "Alamo" movie with John Wayne and are interested in the true story, or those who need to get a fast and basic knowledge for the classroom, this book is an excellent choice.
For reenactors, military miniature modelers, non-professional historians, etc. here are some concerns: The book was published in 1986. Recent excavations & documentary discoveries make the Mexican uniform depictions incorrect. For one example, shako plates and brestplates have been found which vary greatly from those shown & Piping was not white on coats. Sources of information are largely non-Mexican. Lt.Col. Enrique de la Pena's diary and J. Hefter's works are cited for Mexican forces, but there are many more which should have been used to give greater balance.
Since this book is not intended to be a deep scholarly explanation the short-comings can be overlooked.
Read and enjoy this book!

Customer Reviews:
Must read for anyone moving to a new city or wanting to.......2007-03-17
I've been looking for a place to settle down for a few years now and it's much easier to read a book written by those who have researched every major and medium sized city in the country and Canada than to try and do it myself. This book also includes small cities but obviously not EVERY one. It is very informative and it ranks the cities in an easy to understand way. This book includes details most people trying to relocate want to know about such as - weather, crime rates, what kind of crimes occur the most, water quality, air quality, population, job growth rates, #of hospitals nearby, airports nearby, colleges, sports and culture nearby.
where should i be?.......2007-02-28
I bought this book in hopes of finding my ideal location. The book is useful but almost all statistical. Also, the real estate and economy sections are very much out of date - then again, our economy in general is always changing. I found the sections on Canada very helpful. For more stats, try the US Census website, talk about all the right tools!
Fat book of facts.......2006-02-05
I found this book a delightful conglomeration of every fact you might want to know about a city and it's livability. The catagories were population, economy& jobs, Cost of living, Climate, Education, Healthcare, Crime, transportation, Leisure, arts& culture, and quality of life. The charts, tables, and maps kept me in a sense of discovery! The info is really easy to understand and not too abstract. Peter Sander and Bert Sperling, the authors have a great background and created a very flowing publication.
Truth: its a good book for most of us.......2006-01-28
I think this book is uncannily accurate in the way it described many cities with which I am familiar. Must be accurate for the others as well, right? So I would say it is actually very useful.. Anything with a gazillion bits of information will have some errors, but on the whole, trust me, it's a good book.
A Publisher's Huge Embarassment.......2005-11-24
This book rates cities by several livability factors, then adds the ratings to determine who's #1 (it's Charlottesville, VA), who's #2 (Santa Fe, NM) . . . all the way down to who's #331 (Laredo, TX), dead last.
In doing so, the authors have inadvertently switched the ratings of cities with the same name: Columbia (Missouri and South Carolina), Columbus (Georgia and Ohio), Decatur (Alabama and Illinois), Florence (Alabama and South Carolina) Jackson (Michigan and Mississippi), Lafayette (Indiana and Louisiana) and Springfield (Illinois and Massachusetts).
For example: Florence (Alabama) gets Florence (South Carolina's) rosey score for employment, while the latter is saddled with the former's rather grim employment score. Or, Jackson (Michigan) receives Jackson (Mississippi's) milder weather rating, while the latter is stuck with the former's rotten climate rating.
Since a city's ranking depends on the rankings of other cities, these astounding errors affect the final results of every other city listed in the book. You can verify this yourself by comparing ratings summarized in the beginning of the book with ratings in each city's profile.
This book is a fraud. If this had happened in health care or financial services, the authors would have been fired and their study withdrawn.
