Book Description
In this famous work by a pioneer in the movement to free art from the bonds of tradition — a work long considered essential to understanding the evolution of 20th-century art — Kandinsky explores the role of the line, point, and other key elements of non-objective painting. 127 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
this book shows how you can assign meaning to many aspects of art.......2007-07-11
I think this book is useful for understanding Kandinsky's art but I think it is most useful for artists trying to form their own ideas about art. The reason for this is that in ascribing characteristics to many aspects of art for example lines curves and planes, the author makes us as artists think about how we use these aspects of art in our work. So, in other words, he gets you thinking about the meaning of all those marks on paper we make. I think most artists will find their own explanations of the various types of line, curve, color and plane, what this book does is give you the idea for doing so in the first place.

Kandinsky Reveals Secrets of the Drawing Universe.......2001-05-30
Reading this book is like entering the sanctum sanctorum of mark making. It is a first class journey through the thought processes of a major 20th century innovator as he introduces, evaluates and places in relationship the elements of drawing and composition. While not for the faint of heart, Kandinsky writes with such endearing specificity about the exact function of each component (point, line, plane) the marks take on lives of their own. His simultaneous portrayal of the function of marks through words and the distillation of words through marks offers insights into the creative process for artists at every stage of development. The organization of the material is logical, as expected from a man who started out as a lawyer, as well as magical, coming from a man who ascribed to the spiritual in art. For all its apparent simplicity it is well worth the time to savor in small portions. I particularly like the layers of meaning to be found in his concepts. There is a cascading effect to reading a description, applying the principle to an art process and then revisiting the text to have further meaning reveal itself. He literally views drawing from the inside out.

Book Description
Jahrhunderts in seinen Aufnahmen dokumentiert, u.a.

Deliciously, deliriously zany.......2007-09-19
"The first thing you notice about hell is all the poodles that are there." Didn't you just KNOW it!
It's hard to say just how funny this wonderful little book is. The authors invent a tour through the afterlife, the past, and the future, with the help of their narrator and his ghostly cartoonist-correspondent -- marvelously silly drawings. It's a journey full of improbable juxtapositions and bellylaughs. Even if you're reading alone, you'll be laughing out loud.
Get this little gem. It should never have been allowed to go out of print. It's a great little gift for your friends with an irreverent sense of humor.
Unless you're some humorless fundamentalist, you're in for a treat.

A great book for all boyzone fans!.......1998-09-18
This is a book that tells the boyzone story through the eyes of author (BP Fallon) who is a friend of the band so there are some prive moments as well in the book. When you read this book you understand all the stress and work there is in this business and how hard the five Irish boys have worked till now. After all it's not easy having so many hits and raeching every corner of the world. The book is really honest and you can see that the boys told exctly what they had to say- about each other (it seems that Keith and Mikey aren't so close), the business and the world. The pictures of the boys are from the far east and are amazing. So if you wanted to them sleeping, partying, singing, having a laugh or sad (there are some pics of them afre Diana's daeth) that's the book! You'll enjoy the book!!!

Book Description
Over the last twenty years, fifteen Western European nations have removed most barriers to trade and migration, as well as most forms of national discrimination in economic and social exchange. Some have also given up their national currency and their ability to conduct independent monetary and fiscal policy. Opinion on the future of structural reform in the European Union tends to fall into two camps. One side argues that the single market and monetary union will make it more difficult to carry out badly needed structural reforms. The other side contends that, as monetary policy is decided elsewhere, countries will have more resources to concentrate on structural concerns.
Welfare and Employment in a United Europe takes a nuanced approach to the issues. Unusual for an edited volume, it consists of two long studies--each written by a group of economists working in four different countries of the European Union--followed by commentary. The first study suggests that social reform can be achieved without strengthening European Union institutions and should entail limited international redistribution. The second suggests that, although liberalization of product and labor markets offers substantial benefits, there is no guarantee that the European Monetary Union will result in fewer product market restrictions or less employment protection.

Excellent Account of a Pivotal Battle.......2007-03-23
Many books have covered the WWII struggle for Guadalcanal, and with good reason. The campaign marked the Allies' shift from defense to offense in the Pacific theater.
Though the US Navy had turned back a grave threat by sinking four Japanese carriers at Midway in June, 1942, the Americans remained on the defensive in the Pacific until the enemy began building an airstrip on an obscure island in the Solomon chain. This "unsinkable aircraft carrier" threatened to cut off re-supply of Australia.
This peril compelled the US to act. On August 7, 1942, American forces landed on Guadalcanal and took the new airstrip, which they dubbed Henderson Field. The landing was easy, but the fight for control of the island proved to be anything but. Each side, realizing the stakes and refusing to fold, alternately raised the ante.
Gaining control of the island depended on reinforcement and re-supply by sea, so control of the surrounding waters was crucial. Those waters were the scene of many naval clashes, but Hammel concentrates on the three-day span which turned the tide and doomed Japan's effort to recapture Guadalcanal.
That span included the hellish melee of Friday the 13th, in which a Japanese bombardment and resupply force and a pick-up flotilla of US cruisers and destroyers nearly collide in the dark; the daytime defense of the island by the Henderson-based "Cactus Air Force" and fliers from the carrier Enterprise against warships and transports; and the climactic clash of battleships off Savo Island.
These events have been described in many histories but often misunderstood. The surface battles were fought in the dark, among multiple ships operating almost independently. Many ships, and more commanders, were lost. Misidentification of friend and foe occurred from the start, and much confusion has survived to this day.
Hammel's great contribution is his orderly depiction of chaos. While it is both horrifying and thrilling to consider the spectacle of dozens of warships blazing away at one another at point-blank range, it's impossible to understand. Through both review of records and interviews with dwindling survivors, Hammel has put together a time-line. He lets us see what happened to each ship in turn, dividing the free-for-all into fairly comprehensible bites.
The US Navy's achievement here was heroic, and the principals have been lionized. But Hammel does not shrink from showing the heroes' weaknesses. US commanders' failure--and its tragic results--to understand their ships' new technology is depicted frankly. The Americans could have overcome the Japanese' superior night-vision capability by putting ships with the best radar in the lead. But commanders squandered a potential advantage by disposing their ships without regard to radar.
If Hammel has a weakness, it's the characters. Many men figure in the story; we learn what they do, but not who they are. They character who leaves the strongest imprint is US Admiral William F. Halsey, whose aggressive fighting spirit set the tone for the US offensive.
This quibble and the occasional awkward turn of phrase are amply compensated by Hammel's organizational and descriptive skills. He includes a helpful glossary and an array of maps up front, adds a description of participating ships in an appendix, and a good complement of photos in between.
Hammel matter-of-factly describes the deaths of many seamen: blown to bits, drowned, burned, scalded, concussed, torn by shrapnel, run down by ships, shredded by propellers, convulsed by depth charges, machine-gunned in the water, eaten by sharks. Despite the dispassionate tone, the sacrifices of our fighting men assume a cumulative, awesome power. Hammel indulges our senses; his painterly descriptions of the equatorial heat, the conical shadow of Savo, and the sickly-sweet smell of tropical plants linger in the memory as long as images of the horrors of war.
Guadalcanal was a contest of wills. After November 15, The Japanese retained the will to fight, but not to win. The Americans went on the attack and never looked back. The turning point deserves a close examination; this book does it justice.
Habitual reading at its highest.......2004-01-25
This is the first book that I have ever read by Eric Hammel. Originally I had checked it out from my local library, but it was so outstanding and difficult to put down, that I purchased this book just to have my own copy. I want to read this book again and again. In fact this book has led me to purchase the Guadalcanal triology authored by Mr. Hammel. All books are now in my possession and a reading adventure that I will enjoy for years to come. Mr. Hammel's writing style and the amount of detail he includes will keep you on the edge of your reading chair late into the night.
Important Book ABout an Important Battle.......2002-08-18
November 13, 1942 was the turning point of the Pacific war, yet few historians have written extensively about it. Previous writers have merely described that combat as a general melee in which it is impossible to reconstruct the tracts of individual ships. That may be true due to the loss of records, logs, and witnesses, but Hammel has done a credible job of reconstructing plausible positions for the various ships as the battle progressed.
Copyrighted in 1988, Hammel suggests in his Afterward that his reconstructions may be controversial. For example many writers agree that friendly fire from the US cruiser San Francisco hit the US cruiser Atlanta; Hammel is the first that I know of that says unequivocally that Atlanta was actually targeted. Other writers have said that Atlanta drifted into the line of fire. Interestingly enough, subsequent writers have reached the same conclusion as Hammel, or perhaps they have merely accepted Hammel's conclusion.
Most of this book concerns itself with the battle of the night of Nov 13-14. There is also material on the battles of the next two nights that assured the result.
Although this is an excellent book, I penalize it one star because it has only a single track-diagram of the first battle and there is no chronology. I especially miss the latter, because it appears that Hammel actually created a credible chronology yet did not share it. One hopes for a future release of that information.
The book I read was from the library, but I will probably buy a copy for myself.
One of the best depictions of surface battle ever written.......2001-07-28
Hammel does an absolutely amazing job of depicting the surface battles, better than any I've read anywhere before. Has a very intense, vivid writing style that makes the battle very clear to the reader. His descriptions of American destroyers pumping five-inch shell after five-inch shell into the crumbling bridgework of the battleship Hiei are really impressive stuff.
wrong book.......2000-11-05
these reviews don't refer to the mentioned book " The carrier battles" , but to " Guadalcanal decision at sea" from the same writer Eric Hammel. Please check out.
Book Description
In Education Myths, Jay Greene takes on the conventional wisdom and closely examines eighteen myths advanced by the special interest groups dominating public education. In addition to the money myth, the class size myth, and the teacher pay myth, Greene debunks the special education myth (special ed programs burden public schools), the certification myth (certified or more experienced teachers are more effective in the classroom), the graduation myth (nearly all students graduate from high school), the draining myth (choice harms public schools), the segregation myth (private schools are more racially segregated), and several more.
Customer Reviews:
its about freedom stupid.......2007-06-02
I don't need lengthy intellectual arguments to understand that it is better to have parents decide where their children go to school, what they are taught, and how resources are distributed. This country was founded upon the concept of individual liberty and the "public" schools(they are government schools, not public schools) have taken this portion of our liberty away.
Thank you Mr. Greene.......2006-07-15
Jay P. Greene has an agenda: the beginning of a modern system of public education. Wake up America, we need change in Public Education and Greene is right on point. Some of his points can be offensive (to teachers), but sometimes the truth hurts. Everyone agrees there exists a problem, and when Greene asks the reader to look at the facts that lead to the roots in order to get to the solution, I am inspired that there is hope.
We all have agendas in life that govern the decisions we make from the time we wake to the time we sleep. Some of the agendas we choose in life are selfish and regressive for our great country. We can only hope that more are interested in progress. Greene is a true American who has put the progress of his country at the front of his agenda. "Education Myths" is clearly written from the hearts and minds of men who care and I look forward to reading more from Greene and others from his school of thought.
A book with a clear agenda, yet no real solutions.......2006-07-14
It has become common for those with political agendas to try to obscure those agendas by presenting them in books that appear to be a combination of scholarship and plain old common sense. The authors of such texts have clear agendas, yet want to distance themselves from "special interest groups" and appear as a neutral, disinterested parties who are just being helpful. This is one such effort. The author has a clear anti-public education, pro-voucher, anti-funding agenda that shows up in discussions of a broad range of issues.
The real problem with this book is that the author relies on scant evidence and weak analysis, including hypotheticals, to try to refute what he portrays as "myths." His review of the Star project on class size (which ignores other collaborating studies) is an excellent example. His critique of the issue of small class size is extremely poor and can only have one motivation - to oppose increased funding for public schools.
Throughout the book, Mr. Greene selectively picks through data, presenting it in charts and graphs in an attempt to give the book an objective, scholarly feel, while repeating the theme that teachers do not need more pay, schools are not underfunded, vouchers are a form of school reform, and private schools outperform public schools. In doing so, he actually perpetuates several myths, such as the myth that, as a group nationwide private schools outperform public schools.
I tend to dislike books that lump common perceptions and research-based concepts together as "myths," but I dislike them even more when the "myths" are "debunked" by opinionated statements posing as scholarly conclusions. For example, in the chapter on vouchers, the author states that the evidence conclusively shows vouchers are successful. This is not a factual statement, it is an opinion. Mr. Greene, don't present opinions as facts, your readers are smarter than that.
This book will not shed any new light on these issues to anyone who works in the field of education. It is a poor choice for someone wishing to understand current educational policy issues due to the author attempted to hide his clear bias. There are no alternative solutions offered. Mr. Greene's interpretation of the research ranges from simply repeating what is well known to highly opinionated statements presented as facts to being simply incorrect. His analysis of current research is flawed and incompetent. I do not recommend this book and wish I had not wasted my money.
The Myth Beneath All Education Myths.......2006-05-01
Jay P. Greene has made a name for himself as a prolific writer and researcher whose work is guaranteed to provoke controversy. "Education Myths: What Special-Interest Groups Want You To Believe About Our Schools And Why It Isn't So" continues in this tradition. It comes at a time when debate over public education in this country is generating more heat than light. Which side Greene's book is in will itself be the subject of a fierce duel.
Greene identifies 18 myths about public schools, and attempts to demolish each one through selective evidence. Readers without a background in education will likely come away believing that everything he says is true because he makes a highly plausible case. A closer look, however, reveals that not all he says is without opposing credible evidence.
The meta-myth undergirding most of the 18 myths is the contention that education is different from any other human endeavor in terms of what motivates its practitioners. Greene makes his case this way: "It is the belief that education is different from other policy areas in that the types of incentives that normally shape human behavior do not shape educational behavior."
The evidence flatly contradicts the essential foundation of Greene's book. Exit surveys of teachers who leave the profession early in their careers consistently show that frustration over not being able to teach their subject as they were hired to do is the No. 1 reason for bailing out. Salary and other incentives that Greene argues equally apply to teaching are never high on the list. It's not that teachers are aliens from another planet, but that they go into the field with a completely different set of attitudes and values than those who choose other professions. Of course, teachers want higher salaries, but not at the price of everything else.
If Greene had spent any time in front of a class of young people from K-12 and in faculty lounges, he would soon understand how off the mark his comments about the meth-myth are. Being savvy enough to anticipate this criticism, however, Greene deflects it by maintaining that education practitioners are "not necessarily reliable judges of an education policy's merits." He goes on to explain that "people with direct experience often lack the proper perspective to assess questions of policy." If teachers are not able to be objective, then their professional organizations are even less able to do so, in his mind.
This cavalier attitude not only insults teachers but retards the process of improving education. As a sophisticated investigator, Greene should know that no organization can ever be effectively remade without the input and cooperation of those who are on the front line on a daily basis. As a result, his book serves more as a heuristic than as a prescription.
Walt Gardner taught for 28 years in the Los Angeles Unified School District and was a lecturer in the UCLA Graduate School of Education. He writes exclusively on education for major newspapers and magazines, as well as for peer-reviewed journals.
A good discussion, but with bad logic.......2006-04-30
This book hosts an interesting debate on the major issues in public education. It brings out some very good points, but also uses poor logic and one sided arguments.
For example, the author proposes to debunk the myth that teachers need to be paid more by stating that they only work 7 hours a day, 9 months of the year. He claims that teachers make an average of $40,000+ a year and are thus making over $30 an hour. He claims that accountants and other professionals don't make nearly that, thus implying that teacher should be happy they are getting paid as much as they are for the little they are doing.
The truth is that some teachers who have 15 years seniority and a masters degree can make $40,000, but starting teachers make closer to $28,000. I also don't know a single teacher who works only seven hours a day five days a week. If they did it would mean they came to school right when the students did, and left when they did, and did nothing outside of school. Most teachers arrive well in advance and go home long after the students, often supervising multiple activities, sports, clubs, and other programs for which they may get a couple hundred dollars a year. So, what is the real hourly wage? For a teacher who really works from 7:30 to 5:30, plus an hour of prep at home to grade papers, write lessons plans, and prep for the next day, plus time on the weekends to grade more papers a real teacher works closer to 57 hours a week instead of the authors suggested 35. Also, school is in secession nine months out of the year, but that doesn't mean teachers only work for nine months. Over the summers they are attending workshops, taking additional college classes to try and jump to the next pay scale so they can take care of their families. They also come back to school and start working as much as a month before students arrive to set up the next year and revise curriculum. Many do work part time jobs during the summer, but their hours and pay are limited by the time commitment of the classes they are taking, and by the problems associated with jobs that will let you work for three months (did somebody say McDonalds?) With these new factors taken in, what is the wage of a college graduate teacher? The hourly wage for a teacher in their first several years is closer to $12 an hour, a far cry from the authors distorted number of $30 which can only be achieved in reality by someone with 30 years experience and a Ph.D. Unfortunately this lapse in logic is typical of most arguments in the book.
With all the distortions the author does make good points concerning what to do about those teachers who are only putting seven hours in and are getting paid the same. The book is an interesting read, but check the facts on both sides before you believe all the propaganda from either side of this debate.

Book Description
The subject of the book, the ubiquitous circumstellar disks around very young stars and the corresponding jets of outflowing matter, has recently become one of the hottest areas in astrophysics. The disks are thought to be precursors to planetary systems, and the outflows are thought to be a necessary phase in the formation of a young star, helping the star to get rid of angular momentum and energy as it makes its way onto the main sequence. The possible connections to planetary systems and stellar astrophysics makes these topics especially broad, appealing to generalists and specialists alike. The CD not only contains papers that could not be printed in the book but allows the authors to include a fair amount of data, often displayed as color images.
