Fell apart the first time we read it.......2007-04-02
The photos are brilliant but the book is so poorly bound that it fell apart the moment we opened it. The book should have been a hard cover. It was cheaply produced. A real let down.
If you are considering for public library purchase.......2006-08-17
This book has full frontal nudity. The binding is terrible. The whole book fell apart after a dozen circs. It does have lots of color photos in it.

* For the illiterate enthusiast *.......2006-01-05
This book is good for the tattoo enthusiast that knows NOTHING about tattoos. It shows you a glimpse into tattoo art around the world, and also gives you a bit about the history and reasoning behind them. Bottom line,if you want a great tattoo picture boo, this is NOT the book. If you know hardly anything about tattoos and want to learn more, this book is NOT for you. If you want to learn a bit more about the culture behind the art,and know little to nothing about it at this point, this book will as they say be your "bible".

Book Description
Current computer graphics hardware and software make it possible to synthesize near photo-realistic images, but the simulation of natural-looking motion of articulated figures remains a difficult
and challenging task. Skillfully rendered animation of humans, animals, and robots can delight and move us, but simulating their realistic motion holds great promise for many other applications as well, including ergonomic engineering design, clinical diagnosis of pathological movements, rehabilitation therapy, and biomechanics.
Making Them Move presents the work of leading researchers in computer graphics, psychology, robotics and mechanical engineering who were invited to attend the Workshop on the Mechanics, Control and Animation of Articulated
Figures held at the MIT Media Lab in April 1989. The book explores biological and robotic motor control, as well as state-of-the-art computer
graphics techniques for simulating human and animal figures in a natural and physically realistic manner.

Book Description
Winner of the Carnegie Medal
In the English village of Midmeddlecum, Major Palfrey asks his two daughters to behave themselves while he is off at war. Sighs Dinah, "I think that we are quite likely to be bad, however hard we try not to be," and her sister Dorinda adds helpfully, "Very often, when we think we are behaving well, some grown-up person says we are really quite bad. It's difficult to tell which is which." Sure enough, the mischievous sisters soon convince a judge that minds must be changed as often as socks, stage an escape from the local zoo (thanks to a witch's potion which turns them into kangaroos), and—in the company of a golden puma and silver falcon—set off to rescue their father from the tyrant of Bombardy. A tale of hilarity and great adventure, The Wind on the Moon is also a work of high seriousness; after all, "life without freedom," as the valiant puma makes clear, "is a poor, poor thing."
Customer Reviews:
A fun romp with two very naughty girls.......2007-09-10
"When there is wind on the moon, you must be very careful how you behave. Because if it is an ill wind and you behave badly, it will blow straight into your heart, and then you will behave badly for a long time to come." These words uttered by Major Palfrey, Dinah and Dorinda's father, is a foretelling of a year's worth of naughtiness for the two girls. With their father gone, they do their best to make mischief as when they try to do good they end up getting scolded anyway.
First the sisters eat too many pies, steaks and bread to blow themselves up into the shape of balloons. Then, after the village kids prick them with pins to see if they would burst, they cried themselves thin. Their real adventures begin with thoughts of revenge.
With the help of Mrs. Grimble, they bewitch themselves into kangaroos ("I have often wondered what I shall be when I grow up, whether a teacher of dancing, or a circus rider, or a mother of ten, but never, never, never did I expect to be a kangaroo."). With kicks, leaps and bounds they terrify the village people. But their rampage is short-lived. Lassoed by the zoo's owner and caretaker, they are caged and tended as other zoo animals. Here, they solve the mystery of lost Ostrich eggs and free two beasts who become their loyal friends.
Their appetite for naughtiness and cleverness whetted, they turn their attention to freeing their beloved dancing teacher from the county jail. All this is just preparation for the greatest escape adventure of all, rescuing their father from the castle dungeons of a far country.
Eric Linklater's humor shines and the plot zigs and zags unexpectedly. Dorinda and Dinah will be the envy of any child who yearns to take their naughtiness to a higher level.
Caution: Some sentiments in the book may be offensive to some: that fat people are ugly or a person whose face is blackened by dirt looks like a 'negro'.
Overall it is a fun romp with two very naughty girls. Just one thing boggles this reader's mind: Why doesn't their mother ever notice them missing for days or weeks at a time?
Magical.......2007-02-04
This was one of my favorite books as a child. I found it in a dusty corner of the library, and I think I was the only one to have checked in out in years. When I was a teenager, I found it in a booksale at the same library and bought it for 50 cents. I later realized it's a copy from the first printing. As such, it's in really bad shape - especially having once been a library book. I was so glad to hear it was being reprinted.
This story is just magical - I remember getting lost in it. It's one of those classics like the Narnia Chronicles and Harry Potter - a story you can literally sink into and forget where and who you are. These are the types of books that instill a love of reading in kids. I hope to one day give the Wind on the Moon to my own children.
Best book ever.......2006-06-09
As a child living temporarily with my mother in London, four books got me through: The Wind on the Moon and also The Pink Ballet Slippers by Evelyn S. Dehkes and Ballet Shoes and Theatre Shoes by Noel Streatfeild. However, as others have commented, The Wind on the Moon is the one I've reread the most. My old hardcover edition is well-loved, and it is probably no coincidence that my all-time favorite book also is about two sisters: The Old Wives' Tale by Arnold Bennett. It is wonderful to see The Wind on the Moon back in print and to give it as a gift for today's children to discover and enjoy. It is absolutely magical.
My absolute favourite book as a child...........2004-12-15
My Mum gave me this book when I was about ten. It had been given to her when she was a girl by her sunday school group for attendance. I loved it!
I lost it though, and have grieved quietly for the last 20 years. This is an unreal childrens book, and one that I look forward to reading to and with my children. I just wish I still had the original hard cover that belonged to my late Mum. It was something we shared.
My favourite bit was in the back of the specially packed lorry where they had their own house amongst the furniture. I used to rearrange our loungeroom, and Mum would help stuffing cushions and towels and draping tablecloths until I had my own little world.
I'm not going to spoil it by giving away the storyline, but it was written with real imagination and a fantastic sense of childhood adventure. An absolute must for any classic collection.

A Classic.......2006-10-21
I know nothing of the reasons why Kingsley Amis wrote this book, but I'm certainly glad he did. A primer on what to drink and how, the book is wonderfully dated by the changes in drinking habits over the past thirty years. Amis's humor stands up though to the test of time though, as does his commentary on why people drink and what drinking signifies in culture. Includes recipes too.

Really stupid sign book.......2005-12-17
I expected to find pictures of actual signs. However the book presents only a black square on each page around a printed quote of what the author presents as actual words from signs. I consider this a very cheap presentation. Don't get this book if you want pictures of actual signs at their actual locations - which is what really makes signs funny.

Product Description
The distinctive repertoire of a cappella luminaries Sweet Honey In The Rock is much sought after. At last here's a songbook that collects 20 songs and arrangements - four each by five of the current members. There are songs of hope ("Young and Positive"), love ("Stay"), protest ("Ella's Song"), contemplation ("Would You Harbor Me?") and many drawn from African ("Wodaabe Nights") and African-American heritage ("Motherless Chil"). Although SHIR is a women's group, the arrangements are scored for SATB (divisi). 190 pages, folio size (9" x 12").
Customer Reviews:
Continuum Continues Sweet Honey's Tradition.......2001-03-21
Continuum receives high marks for the quality content. It contains 4 songs from each of Sweet Honey in the Rocks five most prolific songwriters. Many of the songs are favorites of mine, and it includes chants, freedom songs, and songs of worship from several of their albums. The book is written in a friendly, easy to use style. I could get together with several of my friends, or a whole choir, and have all the information I would need to perform their music. It also includes information about Sweet Honey's members, which helped me better understand where their music comes from. This book would be extremely helpful as a resource for anyone who works or dabbles in music and wants to promote Sweet Honey's message of love and justice.

Health o Meter HDC100-01 "Grow with Me" Teddy Bear Scale for Babies and Toddlers
ASIN: 0471966258 |
Book Description
This, the first book in the Wiley Series in Culture and Professional Practice, is designed as a practical guide for professionals who work with children from differing cultural backgrounds. It relates cultural differences in development to the problems and practice of child care with a special contribution from cross-cultural psychology. The book includes the main issues which professionals are likely to encounter, for example:
- how individual differences in temperament and behaviour interact with cultural traditions
- how a sense of mixed identity develops and how this conflict affects many young people in different cultural settings
- how the anxieties and motivations of children are influenced by their cultural backgrounds
The book draws upon a theoretical and research base in cross-cultural psychology but presents the issues in practical terms leading to appropriate action. This book is unique with its focus on promoting the well-being of the children and those who care for them. Theory and practice are combined in a convenient volume intended for everyday use by professionals in the field, including pre-school teachers, child care workers and psychologists working with children and adolescents in multicultural environments. Culture and the Child concludes with a discussion of the effects of multicultural interaction and cultural change into the 21st century.

The diverse array of subjects covered include the British campaign in Egypt in 1801; the battle of Maida; Napoleon's decisive victories at Marengo and Austerlitz; the Peninsular War; the Russian Army at war in 1807 and 1812; and the retreat from Moscow. The collection spans the entire career of Dr. Chandler and demonstrates the depth of his research.
Customer Reviews:
Reassessing a Napoleonic Scholar.......2000-06-23
David Chandler is the renowned author of The Campaigns of Napoleon, a monumental work on the war Napoleon fought, both as a general in chief and as head of state. An exhaustive study, I always preferred the Esposito/Elting Atlas to it, and thought Chandler knowledgeable, but as a writer somewhat boring.
I have changed my mind after reading this volume of is collected essays. They are clear, concise, generally accurate, and completely entertaining. In this anathhology, he picks and chooses his subjects carefully, but threads his way through the period from the Revolutionary Wars to 1815.
There are some real gems in this collection, such as his thorough explanation and expose on how Napoleon, thoroughly intent on gilding the beginnings of his career, has the official history of the battle of Marengo, which he nearly lost, rewritten to reflect it going exactly as planned. His analysis of the battle, and the rewriting, is excellent, and we find out where the official, accurate version ended up.
He also reasses the Oman's much oversimplified 'column versus line' with a critical analysis of the 1806 Battle of Maida, a relatively small, obscure action in southern Italy in 1806 between the British under Stuart, and the French under Reynier.
He devotes three essays to the misery that was Russian in 1812; three to Spain and m'lord the Duke of Wellington; One to Austerlitz and one to the Marshals. He also gives us an interesting view into the life of a domestic at war in 1815.
This is an interesting, uncommon book that deserves more reading and is a definite keeper. Well-written, well-researched, and generally impartial, it, in my opinion, is Chandler's best work.

How The World Really Works

Book Description
General Smedley Butler's frank book shows how American war efforts were animated by big-business interests. This extraordinary argument against war by an unexpected proponent is relevant now more than ever.
Customer Reviews:
A truth bullet right in the forehead.......2007-09-03
The word "classic", like other words in the abused English language, is regularly misused. It is not misused in describing this book. And at the pittance required to buy this edition, it can also be described as the biggest bargain you will encounter all year. To call the book an "anti-war" classic is not as accurate as it might be, however, because Gen. Butler envisions the need for a standing army and navy to defend the nation. He is merely horrified at these forces being sent to fight other people's wars. Especially at the cost of all wars.
Gen. Butler writes between the two World Wars. Having earned an estimable reputation among the troops he led, he proceeded not to desert them after the war was over. He sided with the bonus marchers who built "Hooverville", and then he finished some thoughts he had been having about the role of the United States Marine Corps in a number of lesser American military adventures. He then wrote this pamphlet to explain why the country needed to rid itself of the conmen who keep taking it to foreign wars.
The work is divided into five sections:
1. War Is A Racket!
2. Who Makes the Profits?
3. Who Pays the Bills?
4. How to Smash This Racket!
5. To Hell with War!
As another reviewer has noted, Gen. Butler rendered even greater service to his country after leaving the Marines than while serving actively. In prose that is utterly direct and unadorned, he outlines the nature of war, the identities and profit margins of the criminals, the role of the propagandizing press, and the victims of the fiscal enterprise of war. He then suggests a practical method for removing the profit from the business of war: simply conscript every owner, manager and employee of the war-making industries into the war effort, 30 days before the troops are called up, at the same pay rate as the enlisted man. During WWI, that was $30.00 per month. It is an idea so simple and brilliant that it will never be tried, unless, of course, the entire population suddenly has the wool pulled from its eyes, and passes the requisite law. As a test of industrial patriotism, this idea has no peers.
(My idea for educating the masses would be to make every thirteen-year-old boy and girl read this book, pass an exam on it, and then administer the book and the exam to their parents. This would be an annual event, and a general election would be held as soon as the parents had passed their exams.)
It is depressing to read this book in 2007, note that it was written in 1935, and reflect that nothing has changed. It is also heartening to realize that the solution to the problem of war is to convey the meaning of one four-word sentence to the masses. That sentence is the title of this book. Even in a time of sinking literacy levels and short attention spans, I can imagine no more worthy project for our country.
A must read for American Citizens.......2007-07-25
While I don't agree with all of Butler's recommendations (among which is, never fight a war), many of his recommendations are great. His documentation of the Facist plot he exposed is very important. (BTW: Prescott Bush was a co-conspirator in these coup-plans, as documented by the BBC.)
Facism was a threat then, and given the growing corporatism in the USA, a threat now.
People never learn........2007-07-23
This small book is timeless in its message. Written before WW2, it applies to much of what has happened since. As Butler wrote, " Why don't those damned oil companies fly their own flags on their personal property - maybe a flag with a gas pump on it." Two Iraq wars prove Butler's prescience.
Read this now.......2007-05-14
One of the most important books ever written by an American military figure, General Butler explains why war is a crime fought for the financial gain of a tiny class of society. This is extremely relevant for all Americans trying struggling to end wars of conquest and profit.
What Seems Is Not Reality - Read This Pamphlet.......2007-04-24
I am torn in giving this small collection a rating. In terms of importance, I would give this booklet five stars. In terms of writing style, it would earn one star. Nevertheless, this is the kind of book you must read, for it will shatter your illusions, should you have them, about the nature of American military might. These words, from pen of the most decorated American general, Brigadier General Smedley Butler, form a well supported middle finger in the face of American hegemony and neo-colonialism.
From a literary standpoint, this is not a book. It is a collection of short essays, written as you would expect a brash general to write. "War is a Racket" is but one of a several essays in this short book. In addition to its namesake, the booklet also contains an arguments against American intervention in World War II, and a photo essay of the horrors of war.
I would recommend this booklet to anyone going off to fight yet another war based on lies and secretly intended for the profit of the ruling class. Parents, read this before considering allowing your child to join forces of evil.
