    Book Description

The penultimate volume in this series chronicles the move towards modernism, covering the arts, politics, and philosophy from the end of the 1700s to the dawn of the twentieth century. Using literary and musical excerpts to illuminate discussions, Fiero addresses important events and discoveries of the nineteenth century world. Volume five begins with the art and literature of the Romantic era, and concludes with coverage of the shifting aesthetics of the late nineteenth century. As in previous volumes, Volume Five includes a range of vivid illustrations and images throughout the text to enhance the material.

A witty and sometimes surreal look at a very odd brand of terrier. His deft pen combines with a unique insight to skewer the pompous.

5 out of 5 stars Great book but maybe not for everyone.......2000-07-17

I first became acquainted with Tom Roy through his comic strip The Pitts. It was in a Detriot newspaper, and it took several strips before I started to get his odd sense of humor. Once I understood his style, the strip became quite a treat to read. I'm giving a warning, though, that many will probably not find his humor all that funny. It is very unusual. For example, one of his strips of the Pitts showed a drawing of three different sized elf-looking characters, all of whom were jumping in the air. the caption read "Large, medium, and small pixies jumping as high as they can (it will not help them)." That is it. For some reason, me and my entire family found these strips utterly hilarious.

The humor in this book is similar. the book is a series of short biographies, just a sentence or two, about different scottish terriers accompanied with a drawing of them. I think perhaps the best description of both this book and its author's sense of humor are given by a word in the title-- eccentric.

In closing, I found this book to be extremely funny. Anyone who is into a quirky, off the wall sense of humor, or who knows and loves the Pitts, should definately buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Best of the Best.......2007-09-03

I've had a copy of this book for over 10 years and still use it all the time. I'm about due for a new copy since mine is starting to get pretty beat up. I have a bunch of cassettes (tells you how long I've been using it) with about 1/3 of the songs on them so you could hear them performed. But now days I can find a lot of them on YouTube.com being performed by someone if I don't already know the melody, amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music Book.......2007-07-23

Its one of the best music books I've ever bought. It contains many old and new songs. Especially good for small acts (solos, duets & trios etc). Not for everybody but for me, a musician who plays state wide festivals as well as "the local bar scene" this is a very good one.

4 out of 5 stars Wow! A ton of titles..........2007-05-26

Bought this for sing-a-longs in the living room and at the campfire. A ton of material (almost too much)...great for all ages! Love it!

                    5 out of 5 stars Amazing Resource!.......2007-03-17

This book has an amazing collection of all kinds of folk songs. As long as you know the tune (or know someone who knows the tune), you'll have ALL the words and chords. The only surprise was that this is perfect bound (glue binding); I ordered it because a friend had one and it was spiral bound. The spiral binding lays flat when you're using it, which is a LOT easier. I'll probably end-up tearing all the pages out of the glue binding and putting them into a small 3-ring binder. But as far as it's usefulness, this book is fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars Rise Up Singing.......2007-03-08

Numerous songs from the fifties and sixties, folk type, that we enjoy singing. Have formed a song circle using this book and meet once a month with other musician type and sing and play these songs. Great Book.

If you like to sing with friends, this is the book you've always wanted. Most people actually know the tunes to hundreds of songs - but who can remember the words?

At camp or school, church or union hall, by campfire or in your own living room, you will never run out of songs to sing with this book. You'll find the songs you know easily: songs appear in alphabetical order within logical category groupings like lullabies, love songs, sea songs, and "spirituals".

From ballads to Beatles, Bob Dylan to Braodway, "Down by the Old Mill Stream" to "Down by the Riverside": here are the words [and chords], all in one place, to songs you've loved in the past - with many more to learn from friends in the future. -- from book's back cover

This book is the first to offer a global perspective on the unique contemporary media phenomenon of transnational television channels. It is also the first to compare their impact in different regions of the globe. Revealing great richness and diversity across seven key broadcasting regions, North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South and East Asia, the book examines the place of these channels in the process of globalization, their impact on the nation-state, and many more elements central to the study of international media and communications.

                            Book Description

This new reader contains a broad range of authoritative articles, including some newly commissioned pieces, and covers several key facets of family and community history. The book revolves around three central concerns: first, the need to show the historical context of various current preoccupations (for example, do families support each other more or less than in the past?); second, the need to cover the range of research already carried out (through reviews of the literature), and third, the desire to guide and help those who wish to undertake their own research. The book sets family and community history in a broad context, beyond the personal and parochial, and will develop an understanding of social and historical patterns and interactions. It includes writing not only from historians, but also from anthropologists, sociologists and geographers. It encompasses a broad range of issues, including urban and rural experiences, qualitative and quantitative techniques, nineteenth- and twentieth-century experiences, case studies and up-to-date reviews of research. As such, it will be of interest not only to a broad range of students in social history, social anthropology and sociology, but also to those wishing to undertake their own research.

                            Book Description

This is the compelling story of a former Jesuit who traveled to Ireland in order to better understand the IRA, its widespread support among Irish Catholics, and the country's continuing civil unrest. Author Douglass McFerran, an American, made many key contacts in Northern Ireland, enabling him to gain unprecedented access to republican groups. He met with members of the Orange Lodge and the heavily armed Royal Ulster Constabulary; he had tea with leaders of Sinn Fein; and he participated in the annual Internment March on the streets of Belfast. In this book he provides a history of the conflict in Northern Ireland and goes beyond the propaganda on both sides to understand the causes of today's violence and explore what would be necessary to end it. McFerran wrote this book at the suggestion of individuals within the Irish republican community. During its writing he had the cooperation of several Sinn Fein leaders and past and present members of the IRA. McFerran came to believe that the violent situation in Northern Ireland can best be explained by considering the manner in which the English government, through genocide and civil repression, attempted to eliminate Irish resistance to English rule. The failure of the Anglo-Irish War to achieve a united Irish government brought on a republican movement with a political expression in Sinn Fein and a military expression in the guerrilla activities of the Irish Republican Army. The continued failure of the English government to negotiate with Irish nationalists can be attributed to a desire to maintain the political support of predominantly Protestant unionists, who since 1913 have pledged armed resistance to any effort to allow a Catholic-led government to rule over them.

5 out of 5 stars The Truth is a Knife and it cuts Deep............2005-10-25

I picked up this book after returning from a monthlong trip to the North of Ireland. I was absolutely shocked and compelled by its accuracy and how a book written a decade ago could completely mirror what I myself observed during my stay there. The rampant racism of the Unionists and blatant media distortion of their crimes that have long been fed to the public by British and American journalists is appalling. No wonder there have been so many cover-ups. If the general public had ever gotten wind of English and Unionist crimes perpetrated on the Irish Nationalist community the IRA would have had the support to humiliate the English out of their country years ago.

If you are the type of person who is allergic to the facts and are uncomfortable with any book that might make you question your safe, fashionable and politically correct(read:English-biased) opinions about the conflict in the North of Ireland, then don't bother reading this book. The real "terrorists" are the English and the American public that so rabidly swallows their lies. The volunteers of the IRA are heroes who would have made our early American freedom fighters(Washington, Jefferson, etc.) proud.

This seems to be a book that gives excuses for murder, torture, maiming and hate.

I agree with those who found this book not very informative. McFerran talked to far too few people, wasted about a quarter of the book retelling Irish history, and frankly rathered embarrassed me with his naive viewpoint. (How impressed he was that there were well-paved roads in Ireland, for instance.) He's certainly sincere and well-intentioned, but read Toolis, Coogan, Adams, Belfrage and many others for far more thorough interviews, detail, and analysis.

5 out of 5 stars Good reference for film and fiction on Ireland.......2000-09-07

Prof. Doug McFarren's book is the travelogue of an ethics professor with an empirical bent of mind. It's not enough for him to judge the violence wrought by the IRA without learning about it first hand, first from American activists and then from as many who will talk to him in Ireland. Along the way he delivers some of the convoluted history of this troubled nation in dense, readable narrative that serves as good introduction to a complex topic. He also provides wonderful references to and discussion of recent film and fiction representing the Troubles, that make this book a fine resource for the classroom -- especially for ethics professors who might want to devote a lesson to the complex moral issues of insurrection and civil strife.

                              Book Description

“Liberals’ loyalty to the United States is off-limits as a subject of political debate. Why is the relative patriotism of the two parties the only issue that is out of bounds for rational discussion?”

In a stunning follow-up to her number one bestseller Slander, leading conservative pundit Ann Coulter contends that liberals have been wrong on every foreign policy issue, from the fight against Communism at home and abroad, the Nixon and the Clinton presidencies, and the struggle with the Soviet empire right up to today’s war on terrorism. “Liberals have a preternatural gift for always striking a position on the side of treason,” says Coulter. “Everyone says liberals love America, too. No, they don’t.” From Truman to Kennedy to Carter to Clinton, America has contained, appeased, and retreated, often sacrificing America’s best interests and security. With the fate of the world in the balance, liberals should leave the defense of the nation to conservatives.

Reexamining the sixty-year history of the Cold War and beyond—including the career of Senator Joseph McCarthy, the Whittaker Chambers–Alger Hiss affair, Ronald Reagan’s challenge to Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall,” the Gulf War, and our present war on terrorism—Coulter reveals how liberals have been horribly wrong in all their political analyses and policy prescriptions. McCarthy, exonerated by the Venona Papers if not before, was basically right about Soviet agents working for the U.S. government. Hiss turned out to be a high-ranking Soviet spy (who consulted Roosevelt at Yalta). Reagan, ridiculed throughout his presidency, ended up winning the Cold War. And George W. Bush, also an object of ridicule, has performed exceptionally in responding to America’s newest threats at home and abroad.

Coulter, who in Slander exposed a liberal bias in today’s media, also examines how history, especially in the latter half of the twentieth century, has been written by liberals and, therefore, distorted by their perspective. Far from being irrelevant today, her clearheaded and piercing view of what we’ve been through informs us perfectly for challenges today and in the future.

With Slander, Ann Coulter became the most recognized and talked-about conservative intellectual of the year. Treason, in many ways an even more controversial and prescient book, will ignite impassioned political debate at one of the most crucial moments in our history.

5 out of 5 stars Can liberal bias be this longstanding and this deep?.......2007-09-16

The most important thing for you to know is, Ann Coulter, the woman you see on tv is not necessarily the same Ann Coulter who authored this book. Depending upon where you have seen her, and what she had to say, you may have one opinion; as an author, she is something else. Now, both personas can be very funny, but Ann Coulter the writer is very precise and very careful.

I was raised a liberal and I was taught that McCarthy was some kind of a mad demagogue who was out to ruin the lives of any Democrat that he didn't like, as well as the destroyer of the lives of hundreds of people in Hollywood. It was what I was brought up to believe. When I began to read Ann's book, I must admit to being taken aback by some of the things which she said. Over and over again, I'd think to myself, "Now, can that really be true?" And then, like she read my mind, she would supply additional information to explain, justify and prove her points. In all my liberal education, it never occurred to me to ask, "Were there actual Communists in government positions during the McCarthy era?" Never occurred to me. I assumed all this time that these were simply "armchair socialists" who at most gave lip service to the party line, but had no ill will toward our government. I must admit that Ann changed my mind. After reading this book, I see things in a whole different light.

Now, you may not like Ann Coulter, her politics or her persona. However, this book will thoroughly engage you. She is funny (although I can understand how a liberal might read some passages and not find them as funny as I did). No matter which side of the aisle you are on, you will be kept interested, you will see things in a different light, and, if you are closed-minded and from the left, she will make you want to find the nearest conservative and rant for 5 minutes; and then you will go back to reading her book.

One more thing: I don't recall reading any book with this many footnotes. They don't get in your way; they do not interfere with your train of thought; but, whenever you wonder, "Can this be true?" Ann footnotes it--again and again.

Great book; I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you are uncertain whether you will like it or not, read 2 or 3 of Ann's columns; she is logical, engaging and funny...these are important attributes when reading a book of nonfiction.

Ya, the trouble with Ann is that she speaks the truth and she has fact to back it up!

                              5 out of 5 stars An eye-opener.......2007-08-21

Ann put together much information that has been buried or distorted. I've come across much of this same info in my history research but of course the media doesn't make a big deal out of it. What are they going to do, admit that not only were they wrong but that they were serial liars for over 40 years?

If you only read one conservative book this year make it this one.

                              4 out of 5 stars Ann's Best Book.......2007-08-20

Bottom Line: A fascinating reassessment of the McCarthy era.

What You Will Learn: Turns out those crazy charges about communists holding powerful offices in the Department of State and other important government agencies were... true! One can critique Ms. Coulter for her signature harsh bluntness of people's motives, but it not going to be possible to refute her careful review of now declassified documents which clearly show communist spies working on the U.S. government payroll during the cold war.

Parting Shot: Ann has written a serious book on history that makes a strong case that the conventional wisdom on the McCarthy era is largely mistaken.

                              1 out of 5 stars Who's treasonous?.......2007-07-28

According to Coulter, it's anyone who doesn't think that Joseph McCarthy was a sage and patriot, rather than the drunken demagogue that history reveals him to be. Ms Coulter oversimplifies the world into discrete black and white false dichotomies. Those who agree with her hateful, narrow-minded viewpoint are correct-thinking, upstanding citizens. Those who find her venom-spewing diatribes distasteful are terrorist-loving traitors who want nothing more than to see their nation crumble.

                              Please!

Isn't way past time that divisive voices like hers are shown up for what they truly are? How can anyone (even those with half their brain tied behind their backs) condone calling the majority of their fellow Americans traitorous? Coulter's book isn't humorous or witty. It isn't anywere in the same universe with accurate, either.

Coulter writes: "To hear them [liberals] tell it, in the forties and fifties, anyone who read the Village Voice was liable to be hauled before a congressional Star Chamber and forced to "name names" --- presumably of other Village Voice subscribers." Well, no. First, after Sen. McCarthy was censured by the Senate in 1954, his career was pretty much over. No one was being hauled into Congress on a Commie witchhunt after that. And then there is another factual problem: The Village Voice wasn't launched until 1955 --- long after McCarthy's crusade was ashes.

So, do yourself and your country a big favor: pass on this poorly written screed. Coulter offers nothing but hate, flavored with a dose of paranoia and a cupful of inaccuracy.
