Formal issues such as the depiction of light, color, form, and detail are discussed.
Altoon Sultan's paintings are in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and other fine institutions. Represented by the Marlborough Gallery, she lives in Groton, Vermont.
Customer Reviews:
Good Introductory Text.......2002-12-03
This book is an excellent modern alternative to Daniel V. Thompson's useful, but dated book, which I find mired in 'thirties philosophy and art theory. Ms. Sultan lays out the materials and techniques well, not only her own preferences but also other possibilities. I was pleased to see a small but handy section in the back where a number of diverse egg tempera painters with widely varying styles spoke briefly about their own approaches. This is a very good introductory text.
The Only Current 'How-To' for Egg Tempera Painting.......2001-10-17
While I own and have read Daniel V. Thompson, Jr.'s book The Practice of Tempera Painting I'm glad I have Sultan's book as well. I don't know how hatching and cross-hatching can be construed as "uninspired" since this is the traditional method egg tempera artists employ to create paintings. Neither is Sultan's book a "dumbed-down" instruction manual of Thompson's book. The Luminous Brush is a complete book on egg tempera painting itself. The one main technique Thompson's book covers which The Luminous Brush doesn't is gilding.
The Luminous Brush will appeal to people who appreciate the many step-by-step photos showing how to prepare your own grounds, the amount of pigment paste to egg yolk to water ratios, etc. The author provides exercises for the reader using ink and/or gouache for practicing egg tempera painting techniques so the transition to egg tempera itself will be easy. There are chapters on painting landscapes, skies, rough and smooth textures as well as a chapter showing new experimental approaches to egg tempera painting by guest artists. There is a bibliography and sources selling pigments, grounds or other materials for use in egg tempera painting.
Unless you are planning to employ gold gilding in your egg tempera paintings or want to read chapters on which paint pigments to buy that were current as of 1936 (some now known to present health risks and made obsolete by safer, lightfast alternatives) The Luminous Brush will be just fine for anyone wanting to get started.
Keep Looking!.......2000-07-18
This book by Altoon Sultan is basically a dumbed-down version of Daniel V. Thompson, Jr.'s excellent introduction to the medium in his book The Practice of Tempera Painting. While photographs abound, they are most useful in displaying Sultan's uninspired use of hatching and cross-hatching. If your looking at acquiring this book because you are a Sultan fan, it might be just the thing to help you understand how her images are made. If you want a good instructional book on egg tempera, keep looking!
A Luminous Book on Egg Tempera.......1999-12-22
In this luminous and exquisitely presented book Altoon Sultan vividly conveys a sense of the richness inherent in this ancient medium. Sultan eschews the pitfalls of most art instruction books that purvey pat formulas, which lead merely to a hobbyist's superficial and empty technique. Rather, while providing a rigorously detailed and clearly delineated process--each step accompanied by lush, illustrative photographs and a very directly written text--Sultan encourages and leaves room for individual adaptation; which is precisely one of this work's greatest strengths. The text is further amplified by a rich array of the author's own masterful works, as well as samples ranging from the first century A.D. to the present. She includes abstract work that is predicated on spontaneity and improvisation, properties not generally associated with this medium. This is in fact a large and generous work that conveys the author's articulately expressed sense of excitement at the possibilities she has discovered in tempera and eloquently invites us to explore.
A Long Neglected Topic, and a great medium.......1999-12-22
As a teacher and painter who works in different mediums including egg tempera, I implore others teaching to acquire this book for the classroom as well as private study. I have long been a fan of Tooker and Wyeth, and I'm pleased to see Altoon Sultan spreading the word via work and intelligent instruction. It is wonderfully economical as well!

Book Description
Meet the out crowd that's really "in" -- the gay and lesbian stand-up comics who've come out of the closet and stormed the mainstream with the hippest and wittiest comedy acts of the last three decades.
In A Funny Time to Be Gay, Ed Karvoski Jr. traces the evolution of gay and lesbian comedy from Robin Tyler in the seventies and mavericks who played San Francisco's famed Valencia Rose in the eighties to the latest comics in development for their own sitcoms.
With short introductions that reveal the performers' approaches to both their sexual and professional identities, over thirty hilarious monologues capture the diversity of the gay and lesbian comic community, including Lynda Montgomery on being white trailer trash ("I was raised in a paneled hallway"); Barry Steiger on Prozac ("I think antidepressants should come in a Pez dispenser"); Bob Smith on being a gay kid ("(My parents) once gave me a chemistry set -- I used it to make my own line of skin care products"); and Suzanne Westenhoefer on the distinctions in lesbian culture (.".. the butch is the one that holds the remote control, and the femme is the one that sits beside her going, 'change it ... change it ... change it ... '"). From cabaret performers, late-night regulars, and rising stars, these pieces carry a message of joyful celebration: "We're here, we're queer -- get used to laughing along with us!"

Laugh all the way through.......1998-09-27
"This is one of the few books I've been able to read and laugh all the way through. Get it!" -- Bill Kaiser, ON THE PURPLE CIRCUIT
Entertaining and informational.......1998-09-27
"Gay stand-up comedy is not just alive and well these days but flourishing in a big way, as Ed Karvoski Jr. proves in his recent book, A FUNNY TIME TO BE GAY. ... The interviews that precede the monologues are not only entertaining, but informational. ... There are no closets in Karvoski's book, just page after page of humor and a very good read." -- Lester Strong, BALTIMORE GAY PAPER
Historical perspective.......1998-09-27
"What sets A FUNNY TIME TO BE GAY apart from the ever-increasing number of gay comedy books out there is that it chronicles the rise of gay stand-up and gives it some historical perspective." -- J.S. Hall, BAY WINDOWS
Informative, welll thought-out.......1998-09-27
"For the most part, Karvoski lets these hilarious comics speak for themselves, but his introductions are informative, well thought-out, and actually trace a telling line through the relatively new phenomenon of gay stand-up comedy." -- Jim Gifford, THE PINK PAGES
Funny and fun.......1998-09-27
"A FUNNY TIME TO BE GAY is as funny as it is fun to read." -- Gregg Shapiro, OUTLINES

Great for the hard-core Yes fans!.......2005-06-17
I had been seaching all over the Internet for a decent Yes book until I came across this one. When I did, I knew instantly that I had to buy it. This book includes best of the band's earlier classics (Yes through Yesshows). Being a hard core Yes fan for years, as well as a devoted piano player, I simply had to pick this up (mainly for Six Sives of Henry VIII). I would recommend this to any Yes fan or rather to any pianist who just wants to try something different. However, don't be fooled by the size of the book that Amazon shows it as. When the book arrived at my house yesterday, it was at least twice as big as I had envisioned it! It wouldn't even fit on my keyboard stand, so I had to dust off my old metal music stand and stick it behind my keyboard just to keep the book from falling off the thing every time I tried to play something! But overall, if you're a fan of Yes and you enjoy piano, this book has all of the band's songs that are worth learning and will provide you with hours of fun.
Don't bother unless you are a hardcore prog rocker.......2003-08-03
This book has almost all the Yes songs worth learning, unless, of course, you like 90125. The book doesn't include songs from any albums after YesShows. Other than that, it is really thorough, if you don't play bass, drums, lead guitar, or sing backup. A couple years ago I bought a complete Beatles book. I remember being really impressed by the layout. It is written like a score and has every part that is played--not excluding anything. This is what I thought the COMPLETE Yes book would be, but this book has all parts dumbed down so that they can all be played on piano, and as a bassist, this isn't particularly helpful. It does, however, have all the chord changes so it gives one a better understanding of what is going on.
Overall, I would say that I don't regret buying this book. It will be helpful in learning Yes songs. The piano bass parts are still very similar to what Squire is playing, and with a half decent ear for music, sounding out the rest should prove simple. It is worth the [the money] to a real Yes fan. WARNING: Don't buy this book if you can't read music. There is no tab.
So-So.......2002-11-15
Do not be decieved by the title of this book. If you are like me and are still looking for the definitive Yes guitar tablature book, I can promise you that this isn't it... and that such a definitive tab book doesn't exist, either. Understandably, though, it seems that such a book would be very difficult to compile (unless the band did it themselves) since pieces like "The Gates of Delirium" feature large, full band improvisational sections while many are never played exactly the same way (the intro to "Close to the Edge," for example) and differ with the whim of each individual player at different times. There is a book called "Yes: Classic Yes- Selections from Yesyears" that features tablatures for every guitar movement. The notable songs on this are "All Good People," "Roundabout" and "Long Distance Run Around" and some of the other significantly less adventurous pieces (those are the only songs with Wakeman and Howe, I believe). In this book, what we have here are just the chords on guitar (with suspect voicings) and melody lines arranged for piano (just like any other fakebook). *Note, this does not necessarily give you the keyboard parts* To some this may be useful if your intention is to study rock, to others who hope this provides everything necessary for your Yes cover-band- this will give you the tonalities and many of the musical structures, but will still require quite a bit of fleshing out on your part.

Making sense of popular folk song.......2001-04-04
Although Professor Bluestein establishes a new area of study called poplore, this book is not new. Rather it reflects the author's many years of study and work as a modern folklorist. His efforts to bridge the gap between committed folksinging activists and folklore should inspire considerable scholarship although I have read that the book went unnoticed by the academic folklore circles in the states. It's a shame because by reconsidering the life and work of artists such as Pete Seeger and Jean Ritchie, Bluestein reacquaints with the essence of people's song in the US context. Just as Huddie Ledbetter's opus, both in prison and beyond, served to establish an American genre in Lomax, the work of Bluestein's "poplorists" shows us how Leadbelly's legacy will live on. The introductory section on Herder, Whitman and Emerson is fascinating. This is very interesting study and I found it invaluable for my own PhD dissertation research at a Spanish university.

Book Description
To Serve With Honor is the first book by an American to focus on the validity of current standards of military ethics in more than a century. This thoughtful study begins with the premise that the military profession is qualitatively different from any other profession. Author Richard Gabriel uses this assumption to address such vital questions as "What are the limits of military obedience?" and "When does a soldier have an obligation to resist the orders of his superiors?"
Customer Reviews:
To Serve with Honor.......2000-04-08
This book argues that the permeation of business and civilian standards into the military services of the United States, have and will severely compromise its capabilities. Beliefs such as, that the lack of a promotion to a supervisory position should be equated with incompetence and failure, that physically comfortable administrative positions are more prestigious and require more competence than field positions, and the so-called "team spirit" entailing that everything, including ethics, be subordinate to the achievement of the goal, are thoroughly analyzed and criticized as incompatible with the fundamental purposes and responsibilities of a military serving a Western democracy, and the honor demanded for these responsibilities. All involved with, and interested in the capabilities of, the U.S. military will find this book both highly readable and uniquely thought provoking.
Book Description
The judicial confirmation process is in a state of chaos. America's culture war has set the stage for a power struggle reaching to the highest court in the landthe Supreme Court. Integrity and ability are no longer the criteria for evaluating the caliber of a judge. Rather it is one's position on hot-button social issues. Without control of the White House, the House, or the Senate, the Left looks to liberal activist judges rather than to the American voters or their elected representatives to create new rights. Americans who believe in the rule of law must understand and challenge the liberal notion of a "living Constitution," which has politicized the judiciary and provoked today's confirmation battles. We are witnessing not only the testing of the judicial nomination system but a downward spiral in civility within the U.S. Senate.
Nominees endure partisan conflict rather than a dignified and respectful legislative process. Liberal special-interest groups degrade confirmation proceedings into bitter character assassinations that malign the reputations of nominees. During his confirmation process, Judge Charles Pickering waited years to be confirmed and was ultimately forced into retirement by a Democrat minority unwilling to give him the decency of an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor.
In Supreme Chaos, Judge Pickering, who faced unprecedented use of the filibuster by Senate Democrats, provides an insightful assessment of the situation and argues that we must find a way out of the quagmire for the sake of the judiciary, our children and grandchildren, and the rights of all Americans. Pickering's vision of a repaired confirmation process offers hope that order can be restored from the chaosthat justice under the rule of law as established in the Constitution will prevail.

A follow up to Supreme Chaos is coming out in June and it is better than the first. "A Price Too High: the Judiciary in Jeopardy."
Changed Judicial Confirmation Procedures.......2006-11-13
Judge Pickering clearly articulated how Congress has changed the judicial confirmation process over time and increased the Legislative branch's influence over the Judicual branch of governement. Very educational!
Great expose of influence of far left in US.......2006-03-29
I hope millions of Americans read this great book by a fine man who was drug through the mud by the far left in US Senate and media and other leftist groups.
This Book Was Good!.......2006-03-26
Um, like I said, this book was good. Much better than several of the bad books I've read.
