Great Step by Step Instructions.......2006-08-13
I wish I had this book when I learned to paint. Although I don't consider myself a rookie at this point I still learned volumes from this book. Format is perfect for doing each exercise in the studio. This isn't a sit on the couch and read type of book. It's a working book which has a stand to make it easy to flip to the next exercise while you're painting.
Useful, Not handy!.......2006-07-13
If you saw any of Mr. Lynch's videos, you must have this Workshop Lesson Charts because this is a support and a reminder of what you saw on his videos. I gave this 3 stars because this book (calendar like) is very very heavy! It's too dificult to carry because it's very big also!
Workshop lessons.......2004-02-07
The format of this publication is very helpful and makes the book easier to read. I took the work shop and the book closely follows the design of the workshop.
Yesterday's homerun doesn't count in today's game........2003-12-11
I have Tom's other books and think they are excellent. I find this one to be of no use at all.
A Master Teacher's Workshop Charts.......2003-09-06
I agree with Verena Blackburn's review.
Many watercolorists teach workshops. Some merely demonstrate, painting a painting or 2 or 3, and lecture a little, at times the same old clues--you are supposed to learn by example but little else. On the other hand, some work at teaching as hard as they work at painting, and Tom Lynch is among the finest of these.
These 100 charts are for the intermediate-to-advanced watercolor painter. They are brief in explanation (particularly when it comes to Watercolor jargon), so it helps to know a lot of the common watercolor terminology. However, these charts represent the heart of Lynch's comprehensive teaching--he covers nearly everything--both with beautiful illustrations and reproduced paintings of his, which one can easily see accurately illustrate and clarify the text. But they are more than this. Lynch's design/composition/color approaches as well as techniques for rendering specific subject matter are insightful and often like revelations, the product of his many years of painting and teaching. He is able to capture in a few words art wisdom in a way I have not frequently found (I have about 80-90 watercolor painting books). It's obvious that Lynch has thought through and used successfully many times the techniques he captures in the charts. And, he has a way of communicating to you what you need to know to be successful. These charts contain, in concise form, watercolor knowledge that would probably take many of us years to acquire on our own.
Years ago (15 at least), I watched a number of Lynch's teaching presentations on public television (I also bought one of his first instructional books), and those few lessons did more for my understanding of watercolor and painting success than most workshops I have attended. They gave me what you might call a "quantum leap." These charts contain more. Honestly, I would have paid 10 times their retail price to own them, by the way.
One final word, if you buy these charts, it would be good to also buy his book "Watercolor Secrets," which covers some of the same points but also provides more text and explanations than the charts do. This would especially be wise if you are closer to the beginner end of the intermediate range.
Book Description
Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869)--court physician to the king of Saxony--was a naturalist, amateur painter, and theoretician of landscape painting whose Nine Letters on Landscape Painting is an important document of early German romanticism and an elegant appeal for the integration of art and
science.
Carus was inspired by and had contacts with the greatest German intellectuals of his day. Carus prefaced his work with a letter from his correspondence with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was his primary mentor in both science and art. His writings also reflect, however, the influence of the German
natural philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, especially Schelling's notion of a world soul, and the writings of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Carus played a role in the revolution in landscape painting taking place in Saxony around Caspar David Friedrich. The first
edition appears here in English for the first time.

Great visual documentation.......2006-12-10
I bought this as part of my research on Latina/o immigrants and depictions in the media, to try and see another side of the working world not really explored by most US media. This is an excellent visual portrayal of reality for the people depicted in it, and offers a stark look into the reality of the life of many neglected and marginalized communities in the US.
A Beautiful Book.......2006-06-03
Unseen America is a fantastic visual reference to the United States unseen or overlooked by us. Often we see things but don't recognize, the "little people", who keep us in our comfort zone. This book with photo's by those "little people" brings home our underlying culture. The black and white photographs are sometimes disturbing and revealing. This is the "Unseen America" we all need to see!
Important in today's world in America..........2006-04-30
It is very important in today's world in America for us to have contact with all ages, all races, and with a wide range of socio economic groups. If we remain enclosed in one homogeneous world, be it economic or cultural, we loose the full experience of our composite richness. It is not only out of our benevolence that we should reach out, but out of an awareness that we ourselves benefit from them. Their hearts and souls have much needed medicine for us. This book is a wonderful contribution to that effort.

Customer Reviews:
This book looked hilarious, but one mustn't judge a book by its cover.......2005-11-23
The illustrations were great, and I found that the one page of text was addictive (the author originally published these in their newspaper column) but apart from one or two vignettes, it didn't have the "laugh out loud" factor that I thought I was promised by the cover. I skipped through most of it because it was too tiresome to read.
Obviously I am here in New Zealand and unaware of the situation in Britain where these social stereotypes apparently exist. But this book isn't by the British version of Dorothy Parker, from what I can tell.
Why I left England.......2004-12-28
Ah, England. A country full of lovely people...with the depressing, lethal trait of wanting to feel socially superior to someone else. Enter this book of 200-word character portraits of such archetypes as the Politically Correct Vicar (pastor) or the Uninvited Weekend Guest, collected from the pages of the Telegraph newspaper.
You have to ask yourself, what is the point? Who would read this, and why? I think the answer is, people who want to feel part of a superior social group but are not. You can be sure that the real toffs feel no need to read this drivel, and the Telegraph is rarely read by what one would call 'blue-collar' workers, so that leaves a swathe of middle-class people who think that by snickering at these portraits they are somehow superior. OK, so I know it's a little bit of fun, but it just utterly depressed me.
I'm awarding this book two stars solely because of the excellent illustrations, by Sue Macartney-Snape. Otherwise, drivel.

". . . required reading for anyone interested in the great American songs."-New York Times Book Review
Many of us can sing along with Dorothy when she imagines a place "Over the Rainbow." And we all remember the Depression-era classic "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" But very few can name the man who put the words to these celebrated hallmarks of American music- Yip Harburg. Five hundred songs spanning a fifty-year career bear witness to the brilliance of this until-now obscure figure.
Plunge into this scrupulously documented volume and discover how Harburg, once a poet of light verse, played a major role in the transformation of the Broadway revue into the sophisticated musical of the 1940s and 1950s. With extensive and exclusive interviews and lyrical analysis, the authors capture Harburg's wit, distinctive voice, and creative and collaborative methods.
Inquiry into Harburg's Jewish, New York City roots, apprenticeship in his craft, and involvement in the radical politics of the 1930s- he was blacklisted in the 1950s- puts into context the seemingly irreconcilable skepticism and optimism that contoured this lyrical genius's life and work.
Harold Meyerson is Executive Editor and chief political columnist, L.A. Weekly, and is on the editorial board of Dissent. Ernie Harburg is a social psychologist and epidemiologist at the University of Michigan, coauthor (with Bernard Rosenberg) of The Broadway Musical: Collaboration in Commerce and Art, and Yip Harburg's son.

Portrait of a creative mind and passionate soul.......2000-04-30
Yip Harburg, the prodigiously talented lyricist best known for "Brother Can You Spare a Dime," and "Over the Rainbow", is the subject of this splendid biography. Harburg's gifts were uniquely his, but this book shows us how his (financially but not spiritually) impoverished father cultivate Harburg's talents by taking him regularly to the Yiddish theater on the Lower East Side and reading funny stories to him in the evening. Harburg's insights into the elements of creative writing -- a sense of passion, an eye for paradox, an intelligent plan, etc-- are recounted in loving detail. Whether you read this book for insight into this wonderful man's heart, or his craft, you will be richly rewarded.

Book Description
Privatization and policies of economic liberalization were hailed by many critics as key factors which would help lead Mexico towards a process of deeper democratization at the beginning of the 1980s. This book details the single most important privitization both in financial and political terms, the privatization of TELMEX, Mexico's national telecommunications monopoly, and the realities of the so-called democratic "new unionism" movement led by the telephone workers' union.

Excellent.......2007-04-25
A simple and matter of fact telling of a crew's perspective of the night bomber offensive against Germany. This book avoids the usual temptation to pad out the narrative with background information that wasn't available at the time.
If you are looking for a history of the air war then this isn't it. If you want to know what it was really like to fly a Lancaster into Germany on operations and to live as bomber crew in England then you should read this book.
Book Description
For nearly 50 years, facing a static enemy, American intelligence analysis was based on a hierarchical decision-making process that oftentimes insulated analysts from criticism and interaction with the ultimate consumers of their product. In countering asymmetric threats and non-state adversaries, the model is simply outmoded. A flatter, horizontal, networked solution has proven much more effective in today's world.
In his second edition, Robert Clark--former CIA analyst and executive in the Intelligence Directorate--explains how a collaborative, target-centric process both attends to the needs of the customer and promotes more effective collection. Based on feedback from users, early chapters introduce the concept of model synthesis more gradually. Recent intelligence events--with the Iraqi WMD Commission Report at center stage--illustrate the importance of target-centric analysis. This revision also includes broader treatment of collection strategies, systems analysis, and analyst-customer interaction as well as more attention to denial and deception, and to both counterterrorism and counterintelligence analysis.
This new edition contains updates of the practical information and day-to-day details from the previous book told as only an experienced intelligence hand could. Extensive descriptions of the art of target modeling and organizational analysis, as well as thoroughly detailed overviews of the quantitative and predictive techniques used in intelligence analysis make this book an essential tool for illuminating an often shadowy world.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Overview of the Intelligence Process.......2007-05-23
Most books about intelligence end up being boring discussions about the intelligence cycle or intelligence sources and never get to the heart of the process. Clark begins with a brief discussion about the intelligence process, but quickly focuses on why it is important to accurately define the problem that you are trying to assess. This step is often missed, even by seasoned intelligence analysts, who frequently leave many of their assumptions unclarified. Clark uses many references to actual historical case studies to make valid points about common failure tendencies. The real value of this book is in the area of predictions. Clark states rather emphatically that "(D)escribing a past event is not intelligence analysis; it is history. The highest form of intelligence analysis requires structured thinking that results in a prediction of what is likely to happen. True intelligence analysis is always predictive". He goes on to dedicate a sizeable share of remainder of the book to predictive techniques. Many who claim to be intelligence officers do not employ the predictive techniques describes in this book. Intelligence folks have a propensity to gravitate to current intelligence and retell what has already been told, while neglecting to take on the challenging task of predicting what is next. This is one of the best overview books on intelligence analysis. Highly recommended reading.
Intelligence Analysis: A Target-Centric Approach Review.......2005-08-12
The book was very revealing into the structure and tactics the intelligence community has to go through in the new age of terrorism. Intelligence gathering methods of the past and of our fathers and grandfathers is no longer effective in this age of technology and political ideology.
This book was very good at pointing out the problems now facing the intelligence community and revealed some really good stratagies and techniques now being explored in the world of intelligence gathering.
I would recommend this book as a good read for any educational institution looking for a suppliment to their academic requirements.
Excellent & thorough, as to both form and function..........2004-10-30
This is the best work for an account of the role of analysis and its relationship within the intelligence industry. I recommend this book as required reading prior, or in accordance with the first semester of the research methods series of courses at the graduate level.
The material is applicable across various disciplines including law enforcement and military operations, diplomacy, and business. Besides a consistent introduction to tools, arrangements, and concepts, Dr. Clark introduces novel methods such as Delphi; "A major advantage of the target-centric approach is that it formalizes the process of obtaining expert opinions. It also lends itself readily to techniques, such as Delphi... One objective of the Delphi method is the encouragement, rather than the suppression, of conflicting or divergent opinions." Pg. 116.
Much of what can be said about the need for new mechanisms to plan and coordinate U.S. national defense missions also applies to homeland security operations. Every significant policy, plan, and operation against terrorists, drug traffickers, and other criminals demands a coordinated response. Therefore, a full understanding and appreciation of intelligence analysis and the analyst's role is rudimentary for consumers of intelligence products.
Required Reading for Today's Intelligence Professional.......2004-09-22
Robert Clark's book is a most timely, welcome, and important contribution to the literature on intelligence. His target-centric approach captures how intelligence is produced today, and probably how analysis has always been performed. The importance of Dr. Clark's book is that he correctly places the analyst at the center of an effort that hinges on the precise definition of every requirement and then reaching out to the individuals and organizations possibly possessing the data. Dr. Clark's conceptual framework replaces the construct that was more appropriate to producing printed pages and an age when the threat was known well. In that era, the analyst's role as a manager of the knowledge-building effort was not as appreciated as much as the individual's mastery of the topic. Today, people are emphasizing collaboration, horizontal integration, and providing intelligence consumers with what they need, when they need it and in the desired form without any clutter. Dr. Clark gave us an approach for getting our arms around these challenges over a year ago. On an intelligence professional's bookshelf, this book should resemble a repair shop manual - its pages ought to be dog-eared and fingerprint-stained from continuous reference.
comprehensive overview of the analyst's job.......2004-07-12
I bought this book looking for a thorough explanation of the intelligence analyst's job as I am currently an applicant for an intelligence analyst position with a US Govt agency. This book provides a comprehensive and in-depth discussion of the methods used by analysts and discusses the logical interplay between analysts and information collectors, and analysts and policy-makers. The book is clearly organized and lucidly written. Almost every aspect of the analyst's job is discussed in sufficient detail that the reader should feel completely knowledgeable of how the analyst makes estimations and predictions, and the inherent difficulty in doing so. As a career design engineer I was surprised to realize how many engineering topics were discussed - (Kalman Filtering, feedback analysis, etc.). The author makes a liberal use of relevant examples to clarify his points. The sub-title of this book suggests that the central thesis is to present and propose a new method of analysis, but I think it would be more accurate to sub-title it (Intelligence Analysis: "The" Target-Centric Approach) as opposed to "A" Target-Centric Approach. The target-centric approach is an old idea used in many disciplines, and the book still serves to thoroughly discuss the analyst's job whether or not a target-centric approach is used. However, from other sources I have investigated, the intelligence community is embracing the Target-Centric approach already as indicated by the multi-agency Joint Terrorism Task Force recently created. Therefore I think this book really discusses the current state of analysis.
For anyone trying to decide on a career in intelligence analysis this is the first book you need.
The only topic that I feel Mr. Clark did not discuss is provided in another excellent book entitled "The Psychology of Intelligence Analysis" by Richard Huerer. The book is available for free online at the CIA's website. The book discusses, among other applicable things, the reasons for and the prevention of biases in making analyses. It should be the second book you read on the road to understanding how the analyst does his job.
