What ever happened to beauty? Since the late 1960s she seems to have been in exile. Postmodern artists traded her in for flirtations with truth, strength, and purity of form. It was then that women started stripping off their heavy makeup and Barbie doll clothing in an effort to gain equal footing with men. And men, anxious too to break some of society's molds, shed their business suits and leisurewear--then the paragons of male beauty. But as art critic Dave Hickey unwittingly predicted during the '80s, that quality--which Plato believed to be eternal and absolute--is the "issue of the '90s."

After three decades of playing wallflower because she was thought by many artists to be frivolous, easy, tired, and even shallow, beauty is dancing again. Uncontrollable Beauty is filled with exciting essays by artists, critics, curators, and philosophers whose definitions of this elusive quality are often at odds with the Platonic ideal. When beauty besets critic Peter Schjeldahl, his mind is "hyperalert," his body eases, and he is often aware of his "shoulders coming down as unconscious muscular tension lets go." Renowned sculptor Louise Bourgeois also experiences beauty as opposed to encountering it: "Beauty is a series of experiences. It is not a noun ... beauty in and of itself does not exist." Artist and coeditor Bill Beckley blames beauty's banishment on Wittgenstein--who, in a 1938 lecture at Cambridge, said that beauty is most often meant as an interjection "similar to Wow! or rubbing one's stomach"--and his undue influence on conceptual artists of the '60s and '70s. Each essay collected here is rigorous in its definition of this elusive yet powerful force in art and aesthetics. Taken together, the writings are an invigorating read for artists and viewers alike.

Book Description

In 1998, a prestigious group of artists, critics, and literati offered in a single collection their incisive reflections on the question of beauty—past, present, and future. This esteemed collection of essays, entitled Uncontrollable Beauty, provoked debates about beauty in art and culture, arousing widespread curiosity and stimulating passionate discussion that helped to usher in a new era of appreciation for beauty in art. In response to the enduring popularity and acclaim for this anthology, Allworth Press has just published a paperback edition of Uncontrollable Beauty, edited by Bill Beckley and David Shapiro.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2005-07-25

The role of beauty in contemporary art has become a hot topic and this compilation of writings and interviews presents a group of well written and well considered perspectives. I've just finished it and am re-reading many of the essays, as I consider them cogent and inspirational.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing antidote to the dilemna of today.......2001-05-02

UNCONTROLLABLE BEAUTY: Toward a New Aesthetic is easily some of the most beautiful writing I've ever encountered. Editor Beckley ( who also writes well) has selected poets, critics, painters, sculptors, philosophers to write about where we place Beauty on the scale of art importance in the past thirty years. The very fact that this issue is being addressed bodes well for those of us who have been concerned about recent past trends in art of all forms. Being ugly, controversial, in your face, violent, frivolous, mocking, sadistic has been the criteria for what gets press and thus what the public is spoon-fed as what is "in". So many of us tire of these stale and selfish agendas which don't seem to have a life much past the opening of the show that features them. But why did we get that way? Is there a possibility that we have become so overinformed as to how to see that that most sacred aspect of creativity - beauty - has become a dinosaur? Accordingly to lyrically beautiful essays the answer is a decided "No!". Almost every way of describing beauty, feeling beauty, thinking beauty, seeking beauty is given in this eloquent book. This is not always easy reading.....but there is beauty in making the effort, too. Bravo and welcome back to the age of hope!

5 out of 5 stars Great for gifted kids.......2007-08-06

I used the ideas in this book with my gifted students, age K thru 3. They loved it and really came up with some wonderful pictures. It is a good art project that also brings in math.

This is a wonderful book for the kindergarten class I am currently student teaching in. We made the spring flowers while teaching circles, half circles, and quarter circles. It also made a bright spring bulletin board.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the time........2007-01-16

If you know someone who likes to do art, this is a great book. You need to have the time to organize the necessary pieces to create these pictures. The end result is always successful for children.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2007-01-10

I was not familiar with this book before I bought it; however, it was recommended by the teachers of the students for which this and several other Ed Emberley books were purchased. From the thank yous I have received, this book was a real hit! It is used in a Native American Mission School with great enthusiasm and even better results. What more could you ask for?

5 out of 5 stars Fun for all ages!.......2002-11-22

This is a fun book for toddlers and up! Ed Emberley provides lots of ideas / directions for making flowers, insects, animals, borders etc. using only circles! To make it easier, we bought some circle punches in a variety of sizes. Add some paper and glue and you're set to make all sorts of pretty things! My 4 and 6 yr olds both love it. We also own Picture Pie 2, but find this is the easier book to use just because we can use punches instead of tracing and cutting. Lots of fun!

          Book Description

The comic book publishing event of 2000 is coming to your bookstore.

Ultimate Spider-Man received extensive press coverage and was the highest selling comics launch of the year. It is the reinterpretation of Spider-Man's origin, updated for today's tweens and teens. Starting over at the beginning, the story of how a tortured teen is imbued with startling powers, has been completely re-imagined to appeal to the hi-tech, media savvy youth of today.

In the process, great steps were taken to make the unfolding saga reader-friendly to the non-comics reader. "Our characters have been around for almost 40 years," explained Bill Jemas, Marvel`s President of Publishing and New Media, explaining the reasoning behind Ultimate Spider-Man. "It's great that our comics are so rich that storylines run forever, but we want the Ultimate books to be accessible to the first-time reader. Someone will be able to pick up an issue of Ultimate Spider-Man and have enough information to understand and appreciate it."

An outsider even amongst his own peers, high school student Peter Parker is a young man at the crossroads of destiny. Orphaned as a youth and raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May, Peter finds himself the target of a constant barrage of pranks perpetrated by school jock Flash Thompson and his burly bud, nicknamed Kong. After Peter is bitten by an experimental spider from the laboratory of Osborn Industries, industrialist Norman Osborn takes a deadly interest in this development. Will Peter be able to avoid a violent case of corporate downsizing? When backed into a corner, will our hero learn that with great power there must come great responsibility?

A Spider-Man reboot. A young Spidey gains his powers by being bitten by an enhanced Spider on a tour of Osborn Industries.

Otherwise, this is mostly the same, except for Peter has a girlfriend to start with who thinks he is hot, and Norman Osborn, trying the process that made Peter Spider-Man, turns himself into a monster.

          5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Spider-Man.......2007-08-06

This is great book. I recently got interested in comics, and I thought I might give this one a try. I read through it and by the end I knew I needed to get vol. 2 Learning Curve. Although it's not my favorite Ultimate Spider-Man, it's definitely a ggreat start. I would reccemend this book to new comic book readers who are looking for a place to start.

3 out of 5 stars fun, diverting update of the story: nothing revolutionary.......2007-07-17

This isn't exactly your parents' Spider-man: no radioactive spider, yes internet, Uncle Ben has a ponytail. But in general, it's the basic Spider-man origin story: bitten by Mr. Osborne's experimental spider, Peter Parker develops the skills. Mr. Osborne injects himself with something and turns into a Goblin. Fight.

Even though this isn't going to turn your ideas of Spider-man upside down (like Batman: The Dark Knight Returns did), the art is good and the story is engaging. I haven't read the original Spider-man, but the story here largely parallels that of the Tobey Maguire movie. I totally look forward to reading Volume 2.

          5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-05-13

If you love The Amazing Spider-Man, or you are just looking to get into spiderman comics, then you will love this. I couldn't help but read it in one sitting, and once i finished it, i wanted the second volume right away. Im not really a big, buy every issue of a comic book, thats why these volumes work extremely well.

          4 out of 5 stars good spider-man collection..........2007-01-21

          1. i don't like the ultimate universe idea at all. i dislike the infinite earths dc junk also. when you have iconic characters i don't think it's good to confuse the average non-comics fan (or even the average comics fan) with earth-2 superman, superboy prime, ultimates nick fury, etc. they water down the legacy and the impact of the great classic storylines and characters.
          2. despite the above, this is a pretty nice comics collection. it's a good read, but just don't confuse the alternative ultimate universe with the real 616 universe.

Happy fifteenth birthday to me! The perfect gift for a Simpsons-loving, band nerd like myself: The Simpsons Songbook! As soon as I opened it (And after some practicing, of course!) by entire family soon became a chorus; singing along to the famous melodies from the show. I highly recommend the sheet music and lyric combo for any musician! :-)

Bodily Knowledge is a story of how four adolescent girls constructed the meanings of their bodies. It is a story of oppression and resistance, voice and silence. It is a story of how our culture shapes girls' desires and distracts girls from becoming healthy people who pursue significant goals. Lastly, it is an expression of the girls' hopefulness-of their collective belief in the value of efforts to create a better world in which all children might have opportunities to grow up healthy and respected. We tell these stories in terms of the girls' analyses of fashion, their desires to be noticed and accepted by others, their concerns about issues of race and racism, and our own commitments to nurturing critique and agency through curriculum and activist research.

                                Book Description

As a minister, counselor, and teacher, Mary Manin Morrissey has inspired tens of thousands of people to reach higher in life than they ever believed possible. Her message is revolutionary: God has designed each one of us for greatness. And her warmth, candor, and conviction bring this message alive in the heart and mind of everyone who hears her.

As children we instinctively know that we are destined to live great lives. As adults we recognize that our true greatness is expressed in our relationships: in deep, fulfilling partnership, vibrant marriage, abiding closeness with children, parents, and friends. Yet fostering such bonds — even with those we cherish most — can be one of the greatest challenges we will ever face.

In No Less Than Greatness Mary affirms that love is our birthright — and learning to love well is life’s greatest lesson. She shows that we are not alone in our search. When we learn to ask for and listen to divine guidance, we access a different kind of wisdom, a new kind of hope.

Beginning with her own surprising story, Mary shows how ordinary, struggling, or even estranged relationships are a curriculum for learning love, and how our relationships — and we ourselves — can be transformed.

Within these pages Mary provides a step-by-step guide to the spiritual principles that bring love into our lives. Her powerful affirmations, meditations, and exercises are designed to help you:

                                • reveal your true self — your most precious gift to others
                                • consciously design the relationships you most want
                                • open yourself to partnering with God
                                • discover the power of unreasonable giving
                                • achieve intimacy by speaking from your heart
                                • heal the hurt in difficult relationships
                                • awaken your love through simple daily acts

Let Mary Manin Morrissey show you that you already have what it takes to create what you desire most — and how, with God’s help, even imperfect relationships can lead to perfect love.

5 out of 5 stars Greatness is self-introspection & to be totally naked.......2004-12-11

I applaud Manin (author's middle name is 'man in') for at least being PARTIALLY NAKED to her feelings with examples from her own life as on p.257 when she saw a bumper sticker that read: "We come into the world naked, wet and hungry, and it goes downhill from there."

On p.18 (my number again) "I'm a person who discourages foul language and lackadaisical hygiene in my children...Pretending to be someone other than yourself only broadens the distance between the person you are and the one with whom you're trying to establish closeness." The former part of her quote, although a suggestion from Manin, is really conditions she imposed on her children. Thus Not Unconditional Love.

Manin chose to have a soulmate named Ed whose courtship on p.175 of "cards...flowers...fabulous visions he spun for our future (began backing off)...I on the other hand, had our future planned. I wanted a committed relationship, I wanted marriage, to build a family life together" That last statement is full of Conditions and Wants. To be truly naked is to tell about one's own life including naturally sex. As if Manin had no sex with Ed before and after their mutual second marriage.

No wonder on p.202 Manin has an excellent story of an ex-wife selling her ex-husband's brand-new Jaguar for $50 to snub him.

On p.226 Manin gives the only example of her unconditional love. She took in a bag lady to live-in with her family for 6 months and for the only time was rewarded with an inner whisper: "Well done, good and faithful servant." That story by itself is worth reading the book.

Manin quotes on p.132 a story about Mother Teresa about her relationship with God.
"So, when you're praying, what do you say?" Mother Teresa replied, "I don't say anything to God. I listen."
"And what does God say to you?" Mother Teresa answered: "He doesn't say anything to me. He listens."

In the book's epilogue, Manin quotes from a Sufi mystic who posed a puzzle to mankind:

"...man has come into the world for a particular task, and that is his purpose. If he doesn't perform it, he will have done nothing."

So please listen everybody, the puzzle has been solved and it's every one's own "fall from heaven story" as described in 'all my reviews' for The Book of EST (or The BEST). So let me give 3 more examples of that.

The "fall from heaven story" of my ex-wife Annie. When she was a kid, her school bus had a new driver and he had a hard time finding where to drop off Annie and the driver got lost and she was the last one to be dropped off.

In retrospection, Annie chooses to live a life of accumulated knowledge and believes in methodology and that almost every one else is below her because of their unpreparedness and she's proud to be a member of MENSA. One of the reason she divorced me was that she didn't want to give up her materialistic pursuit. So even after she received more than $1 million by selling her condo loft this year and working at her 6 figures paying job, Annie still can't find happiness and is constantly worried by preparing about her unknown future that she's missing completely the present as a present.

At the same time, Annie is not really materialistic since she lives in a mess of an apartment & never asked for any superfluous jewelry or dead flowers & she even borrowed her wedding gown from one of her best girl friend Hope. Hope was the 2nd couple who divulged their fall from heaven stories in front of me. Hope's story is that she was 2nd born. She explained it as 2nd class citizen, e.g. as 2nd born she inherited all her elder sister's clothes. Between 11-17 year-old Hope's life was a blank.

Hope decided to stay overnight at our house & toward midnight she told me what she did when 11-17. As she said she did all the things others did in their fall from heaven, such as stealing things from classmates and lying and playing pranks on them, etc...

On the 2nd day, in the afternoon when I asked again "What would you do, if you knew you are going to die tomorrow?" I noticed that Hope's answer shifted & she finally said that she experienced ENLIGHTENMENT by letting her past go & realized what it is to become UNFIXED or TOTAL FREEDOM. In the morning I noticed she was very pensive.

On the other hand her husband left on the 1st day after dumping his own fall from heaven story. He said that when he was a kid one day he noticed a limousine in his alley & he promised himself to be rich. Hope mentioned that her husband is the only male descendant from 3 generations. In other word, unlike Hope who felt as a 2nd class citizen, her husband had the love of 3 generations and still wanted more of something else.

As every one can see, like the 1st couple's stories in my The BEST review, "fall from heaven story" not only shows the particular task or experience one is born for, it also shows the karmic compatibility of any growing couple. E.g. if the role were reversed, Hope will be on her knees thanking Almighty or heaven for all the loves she received from 3 generations.

In a future review, I will present 2 "fall from heaven stories" where one can't find what one did wrong as PRE-incarnation. Since time doesn't exit & is a result of our own limited & a biased perspective, notice I never use the word RE-incarnation which is a linear & an incorrect perspective inherent in Buddhist sacred texts and the original unedited old & new Christian testaments/bibles. In reality all incarnations exist in parallel only in the present. Past & future is an illusion to facilitate us to experience cause & effect. The only way to break out of that is to be unconditional love and be the creator and cause of everything and let others experience and display the effects.

Manin ends her epilogue with "Go in love."

When Manin can proclaim "BE in LOVE" by finding her own "fall from heaven story" and sink with it all the way, then she will understand the meaning of "BELOVE" everything unconditionally, and "BE UNCONDITIONAL love", instead so can every body else who reads 'All My Reviews'.

3 out of 5 stars LIFE AND LOVE ARE WHATEVER WE CHOOSE TO MAKE IT........2001-08-02

When I first read this book, it seemed much like my own biography would read except I did not find the ministry, but Buddhism. I came to the conclusion many years ago that if life was ever going to get any better, I alone would have to make it happen. By working from sunup to sundown, I raised three daughters entirely on my own without financial help from any other source, now hold three diplomas (business, education and psychology) and have found someone to share my life with who makes all the hard work, pain, sorrow and loss of the past worth while. As the author so poignantly points out, each of us truly does have within us, the power to change our lives; all it takes is courage, perserverance and a lot of hard work to make it happen.

The author does not, however, factor into the equation of relationships, such obstacles as alcoholism or abuse, which occurred not only in my first marriage but are factors in the break-down of many other relationships. From a professional point of view and from first-hand experience, I can attest that factors such as these make it virtually impossible to find "perfect love in an imperfect relationship" particularly if the other party is unwilling to admit there is a problem in the first place, or is completely unwilling to change. For this reason, this book lost a couple of stars in the rating.

As this book reminds us, there is no question that from the day we are born we are all destined to live great lives. For the author, God seems to have been the guiding light; however, I believe we must each find our own guiding light and take strength from whatever "Power" it is we, personally, believe in. The book is worth reading and readers will likely find it quite inspirational.

5 out of 5 stars Having Meaningful Relationships.......2001-08-01

Since reading "Building Your Field of Dreams" four years ago my life has changed tremendously. I rediscovered my lost dreams, and my life's purpose. Without that book, I am not sure where I would be in my life today.

So it was with great excitement that I started reading Mary's new book. For the first time in my life I read a book in one sitting! I thought I was going to receive tools that I could give my brother so that we could have the relationship I have been yearning for. But instead, what the book is about is me, and what I can do from within to create better, more intimate relationships.

One of the things I appreciate the most about "No Less Than Greatness" is how it is written. Often when I read a book of this stature, the concepts presented are heavy and require deep consideration. The concepts Mary offer, though no less important, are written in a way that are understandable and do-able. It is refreshing to read a book that is concise and written simply so that I can start immediately putting into practice the lessons I am being offered. Mary gives practical 'exercises' at the end of each chapter, making it easy for the reader to refer back to. She also offers very helpful examples and ideas on how I can make small changes in my actions that will make a big difference in my relationships, and also how I feel about myself.

Thank you, Mary, for your consistent endeavor in learning so that others, like myself, may learn from you. The people in my life are what I value the most, and now I have something practical and easy, but meaningful to refer to so that I can make a difference in all of my relationships, and therefore, have a richer and more rewarding life. I will refer to this book on a regular basis when I need an idea on how to change a circumstance in my life, or if I just need to be reminded that I am walking alone in my journey.

                                Book Description

This book examines the decision of the Revolutionary leadership to create a gentlemanly officer corps and the effects of the decision as the Continental Army's ranks came to be made up of society's poorest men. The differing standard of physical treatment for soldiers and officers in punishment, sickness, and death is the prism through which Caroline Cox studies social relations both within the army and between it and the larger society. The army was an organization that both reinforced order and rank but also offered some social mobility.

Dr. Cox has written a very well-researched account of the differing lifestyles, and attitudes towards, officers and enlisted person during the American War of Independence. Without the historical background, it is nearly impossible for people with today's sensibilities to understand the dichotomy. We have long left behind the life when a "commoner" was expected to doff a cap in the presence of a gentleman, or the fact that such individuals were really not held to be as "equal" as some of our documents from the periods would seem to indicate. "All men are created equal" clearly did not apply to everyone. In fact, the breaking down of the the distinction between the gentry and "the common herd" was something that many revolutionary leaders neither anticipated nor advocated (see S. Gordon Wood's The Radicalism of the American Revolution or Revolutionary Characters, for example). Washington himself, as Cox notes, was a huge proponent of the distinction and believed that the accepted superiority of the character and intelligence of "gentlemen" was necessary for military order. Cox makes this accepted distinction crystal clear and shows the implications for how the troops were treated and were considered by the population at large. To our eyes, the distinctions between how officers and enlisted persons were treated seems arbitrary and most unfair. Cox's careful historical analysis allows us to understand this better by understanding the thinking of the day regarding the make-up of the people involed. I would recommend Freeman's Affairs of Honor as excellent supplemental reading.

A Hatred That Lasted 4000 Years...

Best Selling author Hal Lindsey explains how, on September 11, an ancient fight-to-the-death conflict exploded on the shores of the U.S. Though most Americans didn't realize it, we were already involved in this struggle. A struggle driven by a hatred that goes back over 4000 years. Islamic fundamentalism's purpose is to replace the Judeo-Christian world order with an Islamic world order. Every American needs to understand the enormity of the threat we face -- and why.

In the aftermath of 9/11 most Americans are asking:

                                * Why do most Muslims hate Jews?
                                * Why do Islamic fundamentalists hate the United States and call it "The Great Satan?"
                                * Why did Islamic terrorists sacrifice their own lives to kill Americans?
                                * Do Islamic fundamentalists have access to weapons of mass destruction?
                                * Could Islamic terrorists imperil the survival of the United States?
                                * What light does Bible prophecy shed on this?
                                * Does the Koran call for violence and conquest?
                                * Are the Islamic fundamentalists an aberration of the Muslim religion, or are they - as they claim - the "True followers of Mohammad?"

This book will answer these questions with both Biblical and secular history. It will also bring new hope to the coming "perilous times."

This book provides a very good background for the Islamic Fundamentalist problems of today. Mr. Lindsey has obviously researched this subject well. Unfortunately, there do not seem to be solutions short of all out warfare. It is only a matter of time.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting read from cover to cover .......2007-04-30

So much of what we read today has an agenda which stems FROM or leads UNTO the left-wing mentality. And the undercurrent behind it all is anti-semetic offerings of elbow room to BASH Christianity going all the way back to the crusades. At the very least, this irritates right-wingers such as myself.
Lindsey does a nice job at explaining the "ROOTS" of so much of this HATRED in this book. The reader is SWARMED with interpretations of scripture, historical reasoning & biblical facts throughout (I almost wore out a highlighter reading this book).
I can however, see how a Muslim reader may be offended by some of his views. (As a matter of fact I recall showing a few pages to a Muslim friend of mine & he was incensed at the "absurdity" of what he read.)
I liked the book though, regardless of my friends' take on it!

5 out of 5 stars Islam and Bible prophecy.......2007-02-07

What I like about Lindsay's writings is he gets right to the point without wasting my time. The Bible is very clear about the tension that has arisen between the Muslims and the Christians and Jews. To truly understand the roots of the hatred in the Middle East one has to be familiar with the history behind the rise of these religions. Unfortunately, our leaders will never be able to deal effectively with the tensions there until they investigate the religious roots of the tensions. As Lindsay points out, we are headed for war and our leaders are helpless to stop it because of the political correctness that has come to rule our foreign policy. What I like about this book is that Hal presents the prophetic case rather clearly. If anyone is really honest in trying to find whether God really exists, all they have to do is investigate the validity of Bible prophecy. We are headed for a situation in which everyone will have to make a decision. Everyone will either bow to Jesus or to Islam. Your eternal destiny is involved and it is worth your time to investigate whether Bible prophecy is true. Lindsay does a great job of presenting the historical validity of Bible prophecy in relation to the rise of Islam. No one will have an excuse for not knowing the truth. I highly encourage anyone that really wants to know what the issues are behind the hatred in the Middle East to read this book. I also use it as a tract to give to people so they can learn about the validity of Bible prophecy in relation to current events. This is a great tool to give to a loved one so they can investiate the validity of Bible prophecy for themselves.

Hal Lindsey does a better than adequate job of exploring the roots of the Arab-Israel conflict.***Clearly anyone who believes in the Bible, should realize, that we as a nation must stand firm as a nation in defense of Israel, stand firm against 'ture' terrorism; yet the final outcome will only ocurr when Jesus Christ the RIGHTEUOS returns!!! 4 out of 5 stars Western pride, simply packaged.......2006-09-22

THis book might be better as an example of what the west is capable of rather than as a historical book. It is in affect a book that is full of pride and distate for the other. THere is no accepting of the other, no idea that his values or his ideas must be understood, no excusing him, no moral relativism saying that 'well it is his culture so its is ok'. Yes this book is sort of like what is read in every classroom in the Muslim world, except reversed, it is a book that likes the west, likes not having to pray five times a day, likes not having to have a women's testimony be worth half a mans, and a likes to adit that, ys the Bible does guide some people.

So it may seem simplistic and 'racist' and 'evil' but that is merely the judging voices of those who appreciate it when other cultures have pride but hate to have any pride or anger in defense of their own.
