Got Index?.......2007-06-26
I LOVE this book! I love how it makes me look at art, and all the fun hidden stories that are woven into the canvas. The only thing that frustrated me about this two volume work is that there is NO index! So.....on my own I took a week or so and compiled several indices of the two volume set and tucked it on the inside front cover of each volumes for quick reference, which indices I would be more than happy to share free of charge with any one who's interested. I indexed the books three ways: by title, by artist and by current location of the works of art. Just send me an email request and I'll forward you the pages so that you can print the booklet out for yourself, and spend happy hours exploring the various artist's genius at your leisure.
Looking at Paintings and Seeing History.......2003-12-10
Rose-Marie and Rainer Hagen have done their research in examining paintings throughout time and have created two extraordinary volumes that invite us into the Art Appreciation Theater of an honored university of learning. Their biographies are strangely missing from these books: we can only surmise that these two fine art historians have spent countless hours in the museums of the world. The fruit of their labor is a world of revealed details secreted within the masterpieces we 'thought' we knew.
The technique: Introduce a complete painting, give a thorough background about the time in which it was created and the artist who created it, and then from isolated windows, fill the remaining pages about that painting with details that not only address the painter's technique but also make commentary on the social mores, theological and philosophical concepts often at odds with the casual audience perceptual skills, and in general open vistas of enjoyment and insight to even the most experienced viewer. The Hagens have managed to gossip a bit, chide and joke a bit, and in the end offer us insights into exactly 'what great paintings say!.'
Most of the paintings scrutinized are the large panoramas of, for example, Rembrandt ('The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Tulp', 'Balshazzar's Feast'), Rubens ('The Love Garden' with the foggy details of Venus milking her breats as fountains!) van Eyck ('Adoration of the Lamb') Poussin, Goya, etc. In addition to famous masters, the Hagens bring to light such lesser known greats as Francisco Pradilla y Ortiz, a "Netherlandish master," Johannes Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, and Ilya Repin to mention only a few.
One of the marvels of this collection is the consummate attention paid Courbet's 1855 "The Studio" which depicts a painter at easel, his model, the commissioners of the painting, royalty and peasants - all painted with adoring detail. It definitely is a statement of the artist's political standpoint!
Technically the books are rich in color, creatively designed and close to color-correct. There is much to be enjoyed here and even more to advance the understanding and appreciation of art. A true gift!
Outstanding - provides social and historical contexts.......2003-11-27
This is a great book on art. So many times when I look at art books, what I find are commentaries on the "artistic" qualities of the paintings. You know, books gushing over an artist's use of colors and light effects.
Instead, the authors of this book analyze the social and historical contexts of the paintings. Great paintings are rarely purely decorative objects, but instead have some sort of message embedded within them. Objects within paintings typically have symbolic significance, and this book really helps the viewer understand the "message" in a painting, rather than concentrate upon technical aspects of artistic methods.
Ideal museum guide.......2003-09-20
It would appear that Taschen is issuing the Hagens' work in two fat(ter) volumes. I have this one (vol.1) and the one with the teat-tweaking sisters on the cover (vol.2) If so, so much the better. The authors are generous to call all the paintings collected here for discussion 'great' but what sour soul would fault someone for being too generous? Without quibbling over the adjective then, I would say that just about all the paintings discussed here definitely become more 'great' than they may have been before the reading. Chronologically ordered, the choice of paintings reflect the authors' preference. As well as their prejudice. Some of the really humongously important paintings are left out, while some of the more obscure ones -- so obscure that it is usually attributed to some Netherlandish Master -- are described lovingly. With every painting, we get the big picture of the whole world into which it was born. Then-current language of symbols, now lost on us moderns, is as fascinating as the social practices of those times: For example, Europeans in the Middle Ages thought nothing of exposing their genitals, especially to warm themselves by the fire, and there is a picture to prove it. What's really nice about this way of presenting works of art is that you get the whole package (historical, social, symbolic, technical, biographical, etc) strictly within the context of one painting that is right in front of you. This book is one art book that is finally done right. No pretentiousness, no supercilious or careless assumption on the part of the author that you know what you ought to know about "masterpieces." Each description is done with real affection for every -- I mean, every -- part of the painting, rather than doing a sweeping thematic summary of the concept. The descriptions read more like stories rather like academic analyses, so they are good to read before going to bed, too. And after each story, you get to feel a little more affection, not awe, for the paintings -- and the people who painted them. Worth every cent.

Pencil notes.......1999-12-21
If you have long, thin scraps of wood left over from other carving projects, now you have a book that will let you make use of those scraps. These patterns were designed to fit on thin scraps of wood. They are exxagerations of various caricatures such as pirates, cowboys, etc. Plenty of information is provided as to carving tools and paint required.

Book Description
Sapphic Modernities marks the first attempt to examine the representation of the lesbian in modernity from the multiple perspectives of literary, visual, and cultural studies, seeking collectively to answer: What range of "sapphisms" circulated during the interwar period, and what forms of cultural production enabled the lesbian's emergence and self-definition? This exciting collection's aim is to show how the sapphic figure, in her multiple and contradictory guises, refigures the relation between public and private space, interrogates the category of nationality, and redefines what it means to be a modern citizen in the early decades of the twentieth century.

About 2.5 stars, but they won't let you vote with half stars.......2004-06-30
This book is a collection of steps on conducting a MOOTW campaign, both at the tactical and strategic level. It is written by two retired military members, with input from many more, and it shows, because the book is written very much in the style of a Army Field manual, along with few diagrams and no photographs. Which is a problem, because the book also reads as dry and boring as an FM or Army Regulation. Which begs the question: what does this book have to add over military FMs? It does consolidate a lot of army doctrine in one convenient package, and it has a section listing details about various NGOs and GOs that may be encountered during MOOTW (although by no means an exhaustive listing) so it is a useful tool. But part of the reason for buying a civilian book is that it can give fresher perspectives to issues that Army FMs do not address. For example, along with listing the proper procedures for Humanitarian Assistance, Interagency Coordination, and performing a Cordon and Search, the book could illustrate with actual examples of past MOOTW operations, where those procedures suceeded or failed, and how they could have been done differently.
Overall, this book is packed with information and sound advice. However, it is not an easy read, and it is also incomplete. It is good as part of a military library, but it cannot stand by itself as the definitive guide to MOOTW.

This book is very helpful, especially for Officers like me. It provides guidelines that will help you to be a great Officers in oreder to lead your troops.

Bob Woodward's secret man is no longer a secret, now that former FBI assistant director W. Mark Felt and his family have revealed that he was Deep Throat, Woodward's legendary anonymous source for his Watergate reporting. Soon after Felt made his identity known, Woodward, who "is prone to complete his homework before it is due or even assigned," according to the afterword by his reporting partner Carl Bernstein, himself revealed that he had been working on a manuscript in preparation for that moment, one that would after 30 years tell the inside story of their mysterious, and history-changing, relationship.
Certainly you get in The Secret Man the cloak-and-dagger details you'd expect--and are likely already familiar with from both the book and the superb movie of All the President's Men: the late-night garage meetings, the red flag in the flower pot, the whispered warning that lives were in danger. Woodward retells the still-riveting story of his and Bernstein's unearthing of the scandal with efficiency and with the last puzzle piece in place. And he is able both to explain some of Felt's motivations, as an FBI loyalist disgusted by Nixon staffers trying to run roughshod over his agency, and to trace some of his remarkable bureaucratic tactics, including commissioning an FBI leak inquiry and deflecting it away from himself. Most fascinatingly, he gives a warts-and-all account of his shameless youthful cultivation of Felt, beginning with their first encounter when Woodward was a bored Navy lieutenant on the make, just three years before being assigned to cover the arraignment of five men in business suits arrested in the offices of the Democratic National Committee. But in a crucial way this doesn't seem to be the book that Woodward had wanted to write, for Felt remains a mystery. A shadowy father figure during the Watergate period, Felt soon distanced himself from Woodward after running into legal trouble of his own, and they fell out of touch in the intervening years. When Woodward finally reestablished contact in 2000, Felt had lost most of his memory, and any understanding with his former source, with whom he was so closely tied in both his private and public lives, remained poignantly but frustratingly unreachable. --Tom Nissley
Book Description
In Washington, D.C., where little stays secret for long, the identity of Deep Throat -- the mysterious source who helped Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein break open the Watergate scandal in 1972 -- remained hidden for 33 years. Now, Woodward tells the story of his long, complex relationship with W. Mark Felt, the enigmatic former No. 2 man in the Federal Bureau of Investigation who helped end the presidency of Richard Nixon.
The Secret Man chronicles the story in intimate detail, from Woodward's first, chance encounter with Felt in the Nixon White House, to their covert, middle-of-the-night meetings in an underground parking garage, to the aftermath of Watergate and decades beyond, until Felt finally stepped forward at age 91 to unmask himself as Deep Throat.
The Secret Man reveals the struggles of a patriotic career FBI man, an admirer of J. Edgar Hoover, the Bureau's legendary director. After Hoover's death, Mark Felt found himself in the cross fire of one of Washington's historic contests, as Nixon and his men tried to dominate the Bureau and cover up the crimes of the administration. This book illuminates the ongoing clash between temporary political power and the permanent bureaucracy of government. Woodward explores Felt's conflicts and motives as he became Deep Throat, not only secretly confirming Woodward and Bernstein's findings from dozens of other sources, but giving a sense of the staggering sweep of Nixon's criminal abuses.
In this volume, part memoir, part morality tale, part political and journalistic history, Woodward provides context and detail about The Washington Post's expose of Watergate. He examines his later, tense relationship with Felt, when the FBI man stood charged with authorizing FBI burglaries. (Not knowing Felt's secret role in the demise of his own presidency, Nixon testified at Felt's trial, and Ronald Reagan later pardoned him.) Woodward lays bare his own personal struggles as he tries to define his relationship, his obligations, and his gratitude to this extraordinary confidential source.
The Secret Man is an intense, 33-year journey, providing a one-of-a-kind study of trust, deception, pressures, alliances, doubts and a lifetime of secrets. Woodward has spent more than three decades asking himself why Mark Felt became Deep Throat. Now the world can see what happened and why, bringing to a close one of the last chapters of Watergate.
Customer Reviews:
Mark Felt and his secret life........2007-09-17
So Woodward and Berstein used Felt's advice and guidance to unmask the Watergate cover up in the White House. Since this book was written by Woodward, I often wonder what portion of the feelings/viewpoints can truly be attributed to Mark Felt and what can be attributed to Bob Woodward. Felt had a ax to grind with Nixon for politicizing the FBI and being jumped over twice for FBI Director. Felt is also praiseworthy of Hoover's efforts at the FBI. That in a nutshell tells that Felt has his own agenda for the agency. The tapes reveal that Nixon also probably knows Felt is feeding information to Woodward and Berstein. Yet despite that, former President Nixon testifies in defense of Felt/Miller at their felony trials in the eighties. Nixon sure did turn the other cheek for Felt when the going got tough.
There is a lot of information in this book. I am not sure all of it is praiseworthy of W. Mark Felt. It does show the atmosphere this country was in following the sixties, and the breakdown in trust of the political leadership of the country. I find it unusual that Felt could justify his own authorization of illegal breakins on Weathermen families, when this was what got Nixon in trouble.
Bland at Best.......2007-09-01
It's hard to believe that this book was spawned by a "book length draft of the Deep Throat story" that Woodward had prepared in advance. It reads like a Memorandum of Findings, with scattered episodes thrown in that contribute incidents of minimal revelation or all too lengthy confirmations of Felt's later senility.
One would expect more of a co-author of "All The President's Men." Woodward seems bored, writing obligatorily so as to rush something out at the time of the announcement. While he tries to force in some emotion, he fails to convey it to the reader. Woodward would have done history a favor by taking some time with this to reveal the real intensity and drama that took place, rather than rushing and doing it so superficially.
Surprisingly Good.......2007-06-27
This is a surprisingly good book. Woodward is honest and reflective about whether he met the high standards Deep Throat set for him, and that he set for himself. And he grapples with whether Deep Throat was a hero or villain or a little of both -- and concludes, convincingly, that Deep Throat was more hero than villain.
Deep Throat's identity sheds entirely new light on the Watergate scandal. That he was the number 2 man in the FBI whose motive was to protect the agency from Nixon's politicization and subversion of law enforcement goes a long way in explaining Nixon's downfall. Yet, Woodward does not shy away from the sordid doings of Hoover and others, including Deep Throat himself. There is a curious resonance between the FBI and the White House plumbers. Is Deep Throat protecting some idealized view of his agency or just his beloved turf?
Woodward is reflective and self-critical. This is the best book he has written and is quite moving.
Everything explained once and for all.......2007-03-28
The Secret Man is the final unveiling of the identity of Deep Throat, the invaluable inside source during the Watergate Scandal. W. Mark Felt, the Number 2 man at the FBI during the Nixon Administration, is now revealed as the confidential source for so much of the information that the famous reporters, Woodward and Bernstein, wrote on for the Washington Post. Years of speculation surrounded the mysterious identity, but here Woodward chronicles the path that led to his confirmation of Felt's identity.
At first the book makes an effort to summarize the on goings of the Watergate investigation. While somewhat necessary, it initially gave the impression that Woodward was simply trying to relive the heyday of his career. The reader was left hoping that he would "hurry up and get to the juicy stuff." But then he does. He describes the events that led up to the Felt disclosure as well as the turmoil he went through in agonizing over when disclosure was appropriate. Should he let Felt, now suffering from bouts of dementia, decide? Should he wait until Felt's death? Should the confidentiality of a source remain that way even after death?
This book also makes clear how much of an impact Felt had on exposing the underpinnings of the Nixon administration and how much of a personal impact Felt made on Woodward. It is obvious from the narration how deeply Woodward admires Felt and how, above all, he protected him from anything that might tarnish his reputation and career.
The Secret Man is fascinating in its historical viewpoint as its human perspective. It seems a bit self promoting at times as Woodward never fails to mention the names of the many books he has written, but overall is the icing on one of history's most intriguing cakes.
History's loss, not fully explained.......2006-11-25
Woodward has written a moderately interesting book about Mark Felt, aka Deep Throat. No doubt the book is indispensable for providing Woodward's side of this two-person-only relationship. But Woodward spends a lot of time trying to excuse himself. Why didn't he press Felt earlier to write down his reasons for being Deep Throat? That is the story we all want to know--why did Mark Felt, 2nd in power at the FBI, risk potential treason charges in an effort that eventually took down a president. The bottom line is that Woodward waited too long, and allowed the story to be lost in old age and memory loss. People that want to know more about Deep Throat, and more of the story behind All The President's Men and Watergate, will want to read this book. But don't expect great revelations or exciting storytelling. Woodward allowed the main story to pass to history untold.

The mysterious source who helped Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein break open the Watergate scandal in 1972 remained hidden for thirty-three years. In The Secret Man, Woodward tells the story of his long, complex relationship with W. Mark Felt, the enigmatic former No. 2 man in the FBI who helped end the presidency of Richard Nixon. Customer Reviews:
Excellent writing, dull reading.......2006-02-19
I began reading Bob Woodward a couple years ago with "Bush at War", and last fall read "All the President's Men". I very much enjoyed the impartial, objective view presented in these works, and especially enjoyed the insight into the process of journalism. When I decided to begin listening to audiobooks in my daily commute, found "The Secret Man".
The book is essentially a retelling of "All the President's Men" (and perhaps "The Final Days", which I have not yet read) but with more direct focus on Woodward, Mark Felt (now known as informant "Deep Throat"), and their long-term relationship which began even before the Watergate scandal. It gives a much deeper insight into the character and motivation of Felt, the frustration and interference he encountered from the Nixon administration (beginning with the ITT/Dita Beard investigation, which Woodward describes as "a dress rehearsal for Watergate"), and the effect that Felt's role as Deep Throat may have played in his later years.
While I very much enjoyed the authorship of Woodward, I disliked the narration by Boyd Gaines. His delivery is dry, slow and deliberate, almost monotone, which very little intonation. I often found myself inadvertantly "tuning out" for a few seconds or almost a minute, which caused me to have to rewind in order to pick up on important points. This was in stark contrast to "My Life" by Bill Clinton, whose narration I found very engaging, or Tom Wolfe's "A man in Full", narrated by David Ogden Stiers, whose vivid narration makes each word and character come alive before me.
In short, regarding "The Secret Man" - Get the text version, but pass on the audiobook (or indeed, ANY audiobook narrated by Boyd Gaines, including "State of War" by James Risen).
