Book Description
3x an Abstraction presents the extraordinary work of three important women artists whose innovative ideas and approaches to drawing had a significant impact on the history of modern abstraction. Hilma af Klint (Sweden, 1862–1944), Emma Kunz (Switzerland, 1892–1963), and Agnes Martin (Canada, b. 1912; U.S. citizenship 1950) approached geometric abstraction not as formalism, but as a means of structuring philosophical, scientific, and spiritual ideas. Using line, geometry, and the grid, each of these artists created diagrammatic drawings of their exploration of complex belief systems and restorative practices.
Noteworthy among the 150 illustrations in the volume are a large number of works by Hilma af Klint, reproduced here for the first time in a major publication; Emma Kunz’s drawings, exhibited in the United States for the first time in 2005; and approximately 20 early works by Agnes Martin. The book also includes writings by each of the artists, an introduction by Catherine de Zegher, seven essays by distinguished contributors, and brief statements from five contemporary artists.
By considering collectively the works of these three artists anew, 3x an Abstraction highlights the artistic contributions of af Klint and Kunz and revisits the work of Martin from a new perspective.

Opening the Doors of perception.......2005-11-10
With a few notable exceptions including M.C. Escher, Dali, and a few others, I'd never really thought of drawing or painting in terms of being a means to an end other than self expression. Af Klint, Kunz, and Martin came from three different parts of the world and from three different generations. Each of them had a slightly different approach to drawing. What they had in common was that they used drawing as a means to explore the inner universe of consciousness and perception. In that regard, they were way, way, way, ahead of their time.
It might be a stretch to call Carl Jung an artist, but he did the same thing through the exploration of dreams. Likewise, Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert, and their cohorts aren't usually considered artists, yet they too explored consciousness and the nature of existence (albeit by different means)along the same lines as the three women represented here.
This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in drawing.
There's an extra reward for those who also happen to be interested in the exploration of the mind, perception, and ultimately, a quest for spirituality.
Book Description
Large-scale ceramics demand a number of considerations that dont necessarily concern most ceramicists. Questions of size of kiln needed, making over an extended period of time, designing for a specific site, assembling, weatherproofing and installation are all things that must be thought about. In this book, Jim Robison discusses all of these points as well as giving pointers as to getting and handling commissions. To work large is to accept a challenge. Pieces which reach out to meet the viewer - on his own terms of scale - create an interaction or dialogue - much more difficult to achieve in small works. To have to walk around a piece makes it difficult to ignore. All the traditional ceramic making methods are applicable to work done on a larger scale - it only requires an ability to think BIG and a bit of ingenuity.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Disney's Donald Duck.......2004-02-05
I was a bit surprised to learn that during World War II the most popular cartoon character was Donald Duck. But then it dawned on me that this would make sense since there has never been a more foul-mouthed character in animation history than Disney's famous fowl. Sure, you can never understand a single world Donald is saying once he gets going in one of his frustrated rages, but you know it has to be dirty. Otherwise, why would it be unintelligible? So, naturally Donald would appeal to American troops, who would be able to appreciate his ability to vent and it is not surprising that he appeared on over 400 insignias (supplied free of charge by Disney to the government) during the war.
"Walt Disney's Donald Duck: 50 Years of Happy Frustration" is an authorized anniversary edition celebration Donald Duck's 50th Birthday in 1984. Donald Duck first debuted on June 9, 1934 in a Disney "Silly Symphony" short called "The Wise Little Hen." Within a year of his classic performance in "The Band Concert" in 1935, what was originally intended as a supporting character was challenging Mickey Mouse as Disney's top cartoon personality and an international superstar. When this book was published Donald has starred in 128 cartoons, appeared in 432 other shorts and future, with his movies shown in 76 countries. Those cartoons have been nominated for Academy Awards a dozen times and received one Oscar. Donald Duck comic strips were published in over 100 newspapers outside the United States with his comic books distributed in 47 countries.
This book celebrates that half-century of achievement and chronicles Donald Duck's rise to fame while also trying to explain the mysteries of the phenomenon. Included are sections on: (1) Donald's origin and creators: (2) Donald's physique, character, and charisma, his relationships with family, friends, foes, and even Donna (remember her?) and Daisy; (3) Donald's animation and film career; (4) Donald's published appearances in book, comic book and strip cartoon form; and (5) "Duckmania," covering his role in product marketing. The back of the book includes a Filmography and Bibliography as well as a section on Duck Language, which consists of a list of "Practical Duck Expressions" taken from a Disney Studio's internal information sheet issued circa 1939. All of these phrases "have been tested for clarity and we know they are understandable."
This is an entertaining and informative look at the history of Donald Duck that takes time to pay attention to the details. For example, there are three different versions of how Clarence "Ducky" Nash came to be the voice of Donald Duck for a half-century. There is also a little section devoted to Donald the Patriot that covers his efforts during World War II. Additionally there are all sorts of illustrations from his career in the various media covered in the text. Whatever you know about the history of the character, "Walt Disney's Donald Duck: 50 Years of Happy Frustration" will add to your knowledge. There is an emphasize on breadth of information rather than depth, but that simply means you end up with a concise volume that comes in under 100 pages instead of a massive tome that would be hard to lift.

Customer Reviews:
Those who like this book really like it, those who don't really hate it.......2007-07-12
There's not much space, it seems, for in-betweens, but place me firmly in the "like" camp, especially since I've talked up this book favorably in reviews of several other Hollywood-gossip books here on Amazon. I will say I'm also in Parish's corner. I haven't read a _bad_ book from him yet, IMO. His "Hollywood Book Of..." series specializes in relatively short, punchy articles that are well-researched (certainly in comparison to some other books in this genre), evenhanded and crisply written. While the photos are not always anything special (his series on actresses features much better selections of pictures), they're also usually well-chosen and a lot less sensationalistic than, say, _Hollywood Babylon's_ selections.
Another reviewer questioned why Cary Grant's rooming with Randolph Scott should even be considered a scandal in 2007, which misses the point. It's not that it's not scandalous now, in 2007; the point is how it was regarded _back then_. If Parish doesn't make it clear in that particular instance, he generally does elsewhere in the book (for instance, in his analysis of the Fatty Arbuckle scandal, where it was clear both at the time and now that Arbuckle was a railroaded, innocent man; in fact, Parish explodes the myth of Virginia Rappe's innocence and demonstrates that key (false) testimony was given by a friend of Rappe's who had an axe of her own to grind).
No book is perfect, though, and my own quibble is that Parish covers some material that's already been gone over in other books in the present series, while leaving out other material that clearly deserves inclusion. Specifically, I'm thinking of his section on the Woody Allen-Mia Farrow breakup, which was already discussed at length in "The Hollywood Book of Breakups". The space devoted to that rehash could have been used, instead, to talk about - for instance - the David Begelman check-forgery scandal (where actor Robert Stack discovered his name signed to a check he didn't draw or cash, which was ultimately traced to then-studio head Begelman).
All in all, though, I have no hesitation in recommending this book.
Poor book, badly disjointed, rehashing scandals most people already know about.......2007-03-24
I found this book to be very disjointed, badly organized, and even poorly written. The list of "scandals" is the same old list of tired stories, innuendo, and might-have-beens that every movie fan and scandal fan likely knows about already. Worse, some of the occurrences Parish lists aren't really even scandals - the fact that Robert Blake was tried for his wife's murder may be a scandal, but in 2007 is the fact that Cary Grant shared a house with a fellow male star even slightly scandalous? The only scandal is in those who judged him, one way or the other.
In addition, this book could have benefited from thorough copy editing and fact-checking. There are many minor and major factual errors and, in addition, many typos and grammatical errors.
I don't recommend this book.
I read this book before because it was WRITTEN before..........2006-09-04
If you have read the Hollywood Babylon books, then there is really no need to read this one. It is a rehash of what was in those books.
The only reason you might want to read this one is to save yourself reading the other two or maybe you have no clue at all about these scandals and want to catch up.
I found the book hard to follow in general. Overall I can't tell if this was a repeat by intention or what. I like John Robert Parish too, so this is no slam on him. I just don't get the point, but he isn't the first guy to so something over.
The Hollywood Book of Scandals.......2006-07-29
The scandals themselves were interesting however I found the book hard to read. Some of the information was repetitive from chapter to chapter and it was not well written. I was looking for something that I could just pick up an read a story at a time and this was not the book for that.
Debbie Davis could only like this book........2006-06-24
Only a short bus rider like Debbie davis could love this book. This book is the second book in a row this parish character wrote and its boring an old news from the old tabloids.Unless you have lived under the dirt there is nothing new here. Just an obvious attempt to make money. This has been done much better by better writers like Bob Thomas and James bacon and Earl Wilson!!!!- Note- one reviwer wrote Don Johnston of Beach Boys wrote I write the songs. His name is Bruce dear.

I Thought We Were The Good Guys.......2002-04-07
Wow, this was a very troubling book. The stories of solders stealing wedding bands and gold teeth fillings are very painful. I thought we were the good guys. I was always taught the stealing was the work of the Nazis and Russians. I found the book well researched and documented. The book is put together in a good order and is easy to follow. If you are interested in World War Two then this is an interesting and very disappointing view of the American solder.
Book Description
This book has the color photos, diagrams, and the analysis to show that the World Trade Center towers and Building 7 were demolished with explosives that were placed in the buildings in preparation for the 9-11 attack.
This book is being used by people around the world to support the accusation that the US Government was the primary conspirator in the 9-11 attack.
For two examples, David Ray Griffin references it in his book "The New Pearl Harbor", and Andreas von Bulow, a retired German government official, is referencing it in his book published in Germany.
If you believe Osama bin Laden attacked us without our government's assistance, why not find the flaws in this book, put these accusations to rest, and help restore America's credibility?
If you already believe the attack was conducted by the U.S. government, this book will help you educate your fellow citizens on the unbelievable corruption in our world.
Customer Reviews:
Very eye opening! These questions need to be answered........2007-06-01
If you believe the line about how the towers fell due to heat, fire, impact...you need to read this book. Warning: When you present people you know with the hardcore evidence that this book presents, you will know first hand what "willfully ignorant" means. People don't want to know the truth! As the title of the book says, it's "painfull" to accept the truth sometimes.
The Author Hits It Out of the Park--Video is Spectacular.......2007-03-03
This is one of the best 9-11 books (with its own video) and I am persuaded by this author and others that 9-11 has not been properly investigated, and that there has been a major cover-up. The video is very powerful, very detailed, very thoughtfully narrated, and carries this book and this author to the very top of the list of reasoned and thus authoritative contributions.
Unlike the other 9/11 books I have reviewed, this book, which is letterhead size, is a brilliantly compelling collection of color photographs, color diagrams, thoughtful calculations, and plain text in two columns. The book and the DVD represent, in my opinion, the single best personal effort, and the single most credible case, to the effect that 9-11 was a huge scam on the American public.
The book, and the DVD, are *exhaustive*. There is no better word.
I especially like the author's discussion of the Oklahoma City bombing as a preview of a diversion (the truck bomb versus two airplanes) combined with controlled demolitions. Unexploded bombs are reported to have been found at the Federal Building, with news clippings. The author also covers the destruction of a wedding hall in Israel, and the downing of an Egyptian airplane, as rehearsals for 9-11.
I personally believe that the WTC were brought down by controlled demolitions planted by order of Larry Silverstein, but I am not certain if his action was done in partnership with Rudy Guliani and Dick Cheney, or on his own. The author does not mention the aspestos problem facing Larry Silverstein, for that I recommend viewing the DVD "Loose Change" as well as "9/11 The Press for Truth."
I also believe that the evidence strongly suggests that the Pentagon was hit by a missile fired by the US, and that there has been a massive cover-up.
I am relatively certain that 9-11 was allowed to happen, and that the majority of those who died--over 80%--died by order of Larry Silverstein, with or without the explicit protective consent of Dick Cheney.
I am quite certain that the 9-11 Commission was a deliberate cover-up, and that Controlled Demolition, all of the WTC security people, the insurance executives, and key Pentagon officials have not been properly investigated.
One day these monsters will be held to account. I have to say, on the basis of all that I have read, viewed, and thought, that it is not Bin Laden that has brought down the Republic, but rather Dick Cheney. Our most fearsome enemies are domestic, not foreign.
Bottom line: the political leadership of America can not be trusted and are almost certainly guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors (see my lists on holding Cheney accountable, and on impeachment guides for citizens).
For those skeptics that continue to believe their government, see the points made in my reivew of the below superb revisionist history:
Someone Would Have Talked: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the Conspiracy to Mislead History
compelling arguments.......2006-11-19
I am not a conspiracy theory person, in fact I've always laughed at them.
But reading this book certainly has made me question a lot of things!!!
Read it with an open mind. And then decide if the arguments hold water or not.
Steel frame buildings don't collapse due to fire alone.......2006-11-14
OK, wake up America! How did the towers free fall to the ground? What mass of energy was so strong as to pulverize the reinforced concrete to dust? Why very quickly destroy evidence by immediately shipping off all steel to China for re-cycling? Building 7 looked exactly like an everyday controlled demolition. You have to be a blind man not to see that. Why was it so, so very hot at the base of the collapsed towers for so long after? Have you never seen a magic trick before?
Overly Opinionated.......2006-10-19
I'll admit that the official story of the events on September 11 are suspect. But that's all I will conclude. The way the story unfolds in the media and the explanations for it all appear to be hiding some evidence. Why? I don't know, and frankly, after reading the author's very slanted view of events, am even less interested to find out. I was interested in reading the facts and evidence that exist, but his whole book was one big conspiracy theory strung together by edited quotes and simplified facts. And his summary about not fighting the Axis of Good was just over the top. Maybe the truth would only hurt us more than we know. Call me naive and ignorant, but I would rather live my life with a "half full" mentality. I enjoy my life and the choices I am able to make in America and since I have not the power to change the unfortunate events of Sept 11, I'll continue to live my humble life and not waste any more time worrying, fearing, and doubting the catastrophic events of that day. What will that accomplish? What I will continue to do is pay respect and remember the 2,000+ lives that were lost - people I didn't know - but sons, daughters, wives, husbands, friends, moms, etc.
