Customer Reviews:
Sweet little sketch book from a master.......2005-08-09
This is a copy of a sketchbook of Cezanne's pencil sketches. It has a good introduction and explanation followed by a listing of the sketches and then finally all the sketches. Interesting to see if you like to draw, and especially to see if you enjoy Cezanne's paintings.
A delightful sketchbook.......2001-04-18
"A Cezanne Sketchbook: Figures, Portraits, Landscapes and Still Lifes" is a reproduction of the informal drawings of the artist Paul Cezanne. These are all black-and-white sketches, accompanied by an informative introduction by Carl O. Schniewind. The sketchbook captures Cezanne's monumental human figures, haunting faces, and lyrical landscapes.
The really wonderful surprise in the sketchbook is the fact that the artist allowed his young son Paul (b. 1872) to also draw in the sketchbook. Thus we see these charming childish sketches alongside the work of a master artist. When you also consider the many portraits of little Paul by his father in this volume, the "Cezanne Sketchbook" becomes a moving testament to the love that binds a father to his son.

Book Description
Exploring how science, religion and the media shape consciousness, Michael Joo's artworks knit together the physical and the metaphysical. Matter and subject matter, energy and waste, the visible and that which cannot be seen--this is the stuff of Joo's sculptures. His densely layered works are accretions of meaning brought about by succinctly-handled conjunctions and disjunctions in a space. This publication is the first monograph on the artist and will feature the first compilation of his own writings.

a modern masterwork of new journalism.......2006-06-14
this is a great book. gilden has gone into an unknown territory here, away from his overcomfortable new york and into the streets and underground clubs of japan. this is a perfect example of the kind of new photojournalism that is the best of what the once great magnum still has to offer. (see luc delahaye for other examples, although he left the agency a few years ago)
Yakusa or your life.......2001-03-16
This (Coffee table Style Photo) Book documents various Characters from the "Yakusa" - The Japanese Mafia-style gangster community in their habitat of the Streets of Japan. Bruce Gilden has captured the kind of lifestyle these people lead in his gritty, at times disturbing (and sometimes quite bizarre) book. The photos tell a story in a single frame, and leave you with a different view of a Japan that we normally see as Hi-Tech and Prosperous. My only criticsm of the book would be, having met Bruce (at the book launch) it would have been good to include a few comments about the pictures from him, as he has a VERY dry and critical sense of humour. His Pictures convey so much truth and visual style, I think a few words would have been the icing on a very Bittersweet cake.
A Beautifully bound, Well designed Photojournalistic Book.

Book Description
How is watching a movie similar to dreaming? What goes on in our minds when we become absorbed in a movie? How does looking “into” a movie screen allow us to experience the thoughts and feelings of a movie’s characters? These and related questions are at the heart of The Power of Movies, a thoughtful, invigorating, and remarkably accessible book about a phenomenon seemingly beyond reach of our understanding. Colin McGinn–“an ingenious philosopher who thinks like a laser and writes like a dream,” according to Steven Pinker–enhances our understanding of both movies and ourselves in this book of rare and refreshing insight.
Customer Reviews:
The power of the Power Of Movies.......2007-08-23
I'll get straight to the point: this book changed the way I look at movies. And what's more important, it changed the way I look at the mind. I've read a number of books on philosophy of mind, and they are pretty much dry, abstract, and repetitious; but this book is great because it examines how the mind works, but in an oblique way--by looking at an externalized analogy of mental processes.
This book is highly recommended because it deals with important and complex topics in a way that is simple and very enoyable. A very rare combination. What more could you ask for?
McGinn's P.O.M = Clear-Eyed Reason and A Fascinating Hypothesis.......2006-07-04
What a marvelous guy is Colin McGinn. He recently appeared with Bill Moyers on the 'Faith & Reason' series and is ever more apparently the closest thing we have in our culture to a modern-day rennaisance man. In 'The Power of Movies' we come to understand how it is that movies are capable of affecting us and what is unique about the movie-viewing experience - as opposed to perceiving other forms of art such as painting, live theater, etc. Personally, I am a huge fan of the way Colin McGinn thinks, what he thinks about, and the lucid, cogent way his thoughts are regurgitated which makes for easy ingestion and assimilation.
How screen images elicit emotional reactions.......2006-04-20
Fans of movies and movie history will appreciate this college-level discussion by a philosophy professor who takes a different look at the entertainment industry and its appeal. His analysis considers how movies affect the mind, fire the imagination, and cause viewers to relate to events on screen. Considerations of how screen images pair with emotional reactions and how dreams and narrative work together to create atmosphere create an intriguing blend of philosophical and psychological reflection.

Book Description
This classic manual to the phenomenon that is Phish continues to grow and improve in this sixth edition, which contains an exhaustively thorough account of the musical group's 17-year careerfrom cult band whose loyal fans followed them from one college gymnasium to another, to the most phenomenal touring machine in music, grossing $39 million last year alone. The band now has two flavors of Ben and Jerry's ice cream bearing its name, members of the Grateful Dead and Little Feat covering its songs, such legends as Willie Nelson and Los Lobos participating in a Phish tribute album, and a feature film about the band, Bittersweet Hotel, in theaters across the countryall without a platinum album. Celebrating the band and an ever-growing fan base that encourages change and despises mainstream acceptance, this book features every song ever performed live and the stories behind it, setlists and reviews for every show since 1983, and a reader's survey. Also included are venues and set times, folklore, special guests, Phish-inspired bands, a hometown tour of Vermont, and interviews with Phish-related musicians, friends, and family. Intimate stories from the band and photos and stories from fans cap off this tribute to the offbeat band from Vermont.

Goofy, but not good.......2004-06-03
Amateurish layout, inaccurate data, and a sour ethical history. Maybe check out an alternative?
helping friendly almanac.......2002-06-07
Forget every other book about phish. This is the only one you'll ever need. This book has everthing you could ever want to know about them and is a great reference tool if you have a large tape or mp3 collection. There are enough statistics, stories, reviews and setlists in here to keep any phan busy for months. If you just can't get enough phish, you need to have this book.
Underground-style printing makes this book special.......2001-04-17
It's no secret in the Phish world that the authors of the Almanac crafted this book without any help from publishers, agents, or reps, and put out the single most informative book in the Phish community. Everything you could imagine and more is in this book, and it's homegrown feel will make everyone feel like part of the team
You must own this book!.......2001-04-17
The Pharmer's Almanac makes me proud to be a Phish fan. This book, if you've never seen it, is a wonderful combination of the factual and the creative. It has a zillion setlists and song tables, and also has a detailed and well-written history of the band (something no other book really has, even the Phish Book). But the gems of the Almanac can be found in the little slices of wit, insight and humor that pop up on every page. This book was written by, designed and published by Phish fans. It's gone through several editors over the years and is as strong as ever. That our scene could produce such sustained excellence is something we should all take pride in.
Not so special.......2001-04-12
The printing is pretty poor. Paper is thin. Images are blurry. Text is crazy.

Gives Perspectives & Predictions.......2003-09-04
Ray Browne is one of the most influential (if not THE most influential) "founding fathers" in the field of popular culture. Contributors from various institutions offer a beginning of the 21st century tribute to him, his work, and the discipline. Although retired from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, he continues to turn out publications. Frequently he reviews books in academic journals. I found the complilation of his works by Maryan Wherry to be inspiring. Her list of his works include: books, articles, reviews, and translations. Browne made his mark on his discipline. As a role model of scholarship he sets a high standard for productivity.

Book Description
Placing a focus on the spiritual needs of death and dying, the theme of this book is that the focus of counselling with people who are dying should be on the psychospiritual aspects of death and dying. It is based on two assumptions - that death and anxiety, not pain, are the most critical issues for the dying, and that the time of dying is an opportunity for growth and transformation. The author believes that it is imperative for counselling professionals to realize that at this time understanding and caring are primary.

Book Description
The idea that suicide may be an acceptable, rational option is rarely presented in professional literature. However, recent events and developments forcefully demonstrate that mental health professionals can no longer ignore the possibility that people can make a rational decision to die.
After introducing the concept of rational suicide, the book explores the changing views of suicide over the centuries. Common arguments against rational suicide are examined and rebutted.

Book Description
In December 1944, the German Army launched an attack through the Ardennes forest that aimed to seize the port of Antwerp and cut the Allied supply lines, hoping to force the Western Allies either to delay their advance or agree to a peace settlement. The Battle of the Bulge: Hitler's Last Hope is a comprehensive history of Hitler's last offensive in the West, the failure of which undoubtedly hastened the end of the war.
The book begins with a study of the background to the battle, and a description of events in the West leading up to the offensive. The strategic importance of Antwerp as a major port close to the Allied lines is explained, as are the factors which led Hitler to believe an attack could be successful. The poor state of the Allies' defenses and the low readiness of the American troops on the front line in the Ardennes are covered in depth, as are the special tactics used by the Germans for the attack, most notably Jochen Peiper's commandos dressed in American uniforms. The book shows how, after initial German success, a bitter struggle developed between the German and American forces for the key town of Bastogne. It details how the offensive lost momentum and thus any chance of success, particularly once the skies cleared and the Allies were able to bring the full weight of their airpower to bear. The book's authoritative text is complemented with detailed maps explaining the troop movements, which took place during the battle. It also includes appendices with information on orders of battle, losses and equipment. The Battle of the Bulge: Hitler's Last Hope is a comprehensive account of the battle that saw a German attempt to relive the successes of 1940, but one that was effectively doomed from the beginning, and the consequences of that failure for Hitler's Third Reich.
Book Description
Based on Michel Foucault's 1978 and 1979 lectures at the Collège de France on governmental rationalities and his 1977 interview regarding his work on imprisonment, this volume is the long-awaited sequel to Power/Knowledge. In these lectures, Foucault examines the art or activity of government both in its present form and within a historical perspective as well as the different ways governmentality has been made thinkable and practicable.
Foucault's thoughts on political discourse and governmentality are supplemented by the essays of internationally renowned scholars. United by the common influence of Foucault's approach, they explore the many modern manifestations of government: the reason of state, police, liberalism, security, social economy, insurance, solidarity, welfare, risk management, and more. The central theme is that the object and the activity of government are not instinctive and natural things, but things that have been invented and learned.
The Foucault Effect analyzes the thought behind practices of government and argues that criticism represents a true force for change in attitudes and actions, and that extending the limits of some practices allows the invention of others. This unique and extraordinarily useful collection of articles and primary materials will open the way for a whole new set of discussions of the work of Michel Foucault as well as the status of liberalism, social policy, and insurance.
Customer Reviews:
Foucault and clarity.......2000-07-21
This is a key text for any of us wrestling with the epistemological change which Foucault created in his own, earlier writing. The work on "governmentality",for example, expanded here into intelligible and practical context allows each researcher to use Foucault's vision to generate the methodological tools which he had deliberately avoided.Castel's analysis of 'normal' by itself makes this book worth owning because it is both a guide to Foucault's own philosophical progress and a set of practical extensions of his unrolling vision.
