Don't let the title fool you.......2004-04-22
This book provides a tremendous amount of information on sketching in nature but don't let the title fool you- this is a terrific general sketching and drawing book. Johnson covers topics that are rarely covered in other books. The use of pens, watercolors, pencils and colored pencils (both water soluble and not) are covered. This is an invaluable book and is an asset to both the beginner and more advanced student. I'm on Amazon right now trying to find other books by Cathy Johnson- I'm that impressed.
Cathy keeps it simple...and affordable........2001-08-30
This is a very refreshing book. Cathy Johnson not only makes it look easy to draw and paint loose, yet accurate, watercolor sketches outdoors, but she tells you everything you need to know. This book will actually teach you how to draw and paint what you see, without making things overly complicated. Best of all, her supply list is well within the means of most people. I really enjoyed this book, and learned a great deal from it. This summer, I caught Lyme disease. It's nasty. For months, I could hardly walk, let alone hike and garden and do stuff I used to love. But Cathy's book has helped draw me back outside, and I'm learning to love nature all over again, one leaf, flower, and bug at a time. This book would make a great gift.
Fine for the Arteest on the Go.......2000-04-14
This is a pretty complete little volume. When you get it, you really do have to assume some knowledge and practice of making art and the media, however, she goes over materials and techniques, which can serve as a good refresher or initial exposure.
The best part is a discussion early on about how to pack all the materials so you don't keel over from exhaustion, hauling too much art gear, along with the usual standard hiking goodies. (I especially needed help with that, given my childlike adoration of way too many pretty colors.)
The emphasis is on SKETCHING, not doing the Mona Lisa. This is important in outdoor work as light changes and speed can be of the essence. I sometimes pick up this book so that I can just relax my techniques a bit.
The examples in the book, in many media and in monochrome or color are a delight to view. Sometimes, it's just fun to sit down with a cuppa and flip through the nice drawings of objects and scenes in nature.

Gardens in Pastels.......2001-06-26
If you are a beginner, this would be the book for you. It is simply written. The book covers the basics of pastel and limited information on perspective, color theory, and atmospheric distance. I was disappointed in the book because for the money spent, I expected an adult book. The book is a thin soft cover paperback. It would be great for a 12-15 year old. Any other pastel book would cover the same basics and more. Gardens in Pastel would be a good checklist/reminder for painting on location.

This is one of the worst art books I have ever purchased. I thought it would be a mixed medium method or a way to combine watercolor and pastels. Each medium was handled separately. The pastel portion was a disgrace. It was very childlike. I am a pastel and watercolorist. Any other book on beginning pastel would be better. The watercolor would be informative to anyone who new nothing about watercolor. Shame on the publisher for allowing this book to even use the word pastel. I feel I was robbed.

Alison Hobylyn completely opens her worldliness of artistic skills in a delightful commensense manner covering both watercolour and pastel materials, composition, drawing, perspective, and creating mood in a painting. The uniqueness of Hobyn's teaching approach is her ability to use examples of her sensitive painting style and vision to demonstrate the ideas she presents. Anyone searching for the window into the heart, soul, and expertise of a talented watercolour and pastel artist should most definitely read this excellent book.

Karl French has written a decent book about ABBA. He does analysize the tracks on each of ABBA's albums and has an overview of the plot to Mama Mia. However, this book has very little new information about ABBA. In fact, on his source page, he cites more than 20 websites. If you want a definite ABBA book, I would recommend Bright Lights, Dark Shadows.

Fun reading for a baby boomer that grew up there..........2000-04-13
This is a definite fun read. If you grew up in Portland in the 50's and 60's, like I did, it's a wonderful stroll down memory lane as well as a good refresher on what's been going on since. Seems very close to the truth, at least on the topics I'm in a position to judge. Only knock is it's a little too Seattle oriented for my blood!

I'm a native Southerner, so reading this book about the Pacific Northwest was a lot of fun. The writers have a unique voice that makes this book much more than a mere compendium of facts. Each piece is written with a lot of humor and insight. Anyone interested in pop culture should own this book!
