Book Description
This first comprehensive publication on the influential contemporary artist focuses on the experimental nature of Andrea Zittel's signature objects, inhabitable sculptures, and other projects.
In her work as an artist, Zittel investigates domestic and urban life in Western societies. Exploring the various aspects of living, the artist designs her own household settings to serve as a test case for her experimental living structures. Her work has provoked debates about the changed meaning of domestic and collective space and the possibilities for new adaptations to urban conditions today. Richly illustrated, Andrea Zittel: Critical Space includes nearly two hundred reproductions of Zittel's works of art, many of which are published here for the first time. The book includes over one hundred sculptures and drawings, documentation of early work, and recent site-specific work in the Mojave Desert of California. With essays that touch upon urbanism, architecture, design and consumer culture, this catalog offers an extensive analysis of Zittel's contribution to contemporary trends in art and architecture.
Customer Reviews:
Great retrospective on youngish artist.......2006-10-29
This is a high quality print art book, is well edited, with the artist's career and thoughts organized into chapters, somewhat chronologically. Zittel is only in her late 30s and is super prolific so this book is really like an early mid life summary and not a true retrospective.
Zittel's lists of ideas are handy. When I am feeling down about the messiness, the lack of space, urban decay, and my relative poverty, I just need to look at one of her lists to get cheered up (e.g., matte surfaces hide dirt, how much space does one need, anyway?) She has such a sense of humor about stuff that most people get too serious about (today, everyone wants more space, more clothes, more variety.... Zittel makes you laugh and question, why? And to recognize that too much choice, too much stuff becomes oppressive).
I predict that Zittel will be as recognized one day as a Knoll, a Perriand, a Schindler-type epoch-maker, a messiah, a visionary for modernist design. Under the terms of our mass consumer culture, she cannot become really popular, but she has the right critical outsider attitude, and with such a happy, cheerful twist. I wish Target or some mass market producer would adopt some of her ideas and sell them to the masses (the bowl-in-the-table, the carpets made to look like furniture, the "uniform" outfit, the A-Z living unit, etc.).
Zittel has the vision to improve the average person's life through simple changes, and even allow people to spend less money for fewer, but better designed, "re-thought" products.

From The Inside Flap:.......2005-10-03
The English Gardening School at the famed Chelsea Physic Garden, London, is highly regarded for its courses in amateur and professional landscape gardening. Now, for the first time, this course is available, fully adapted for the American climate, conditions and indigenous plantings, for the american gardener.
This book is a distillation of the courses, and as such is a complete master class in planning and realizing the perfect garden. Its principles and approach are fully applicable to garden planning virtually anywhere in the western world. The essence of the course is to start from the basics of the site, soil, and climatic conditions before designing the structure of the garden and its planting schemes. Other sections of the book deal with construction and practical gardening. Finally the principles of design are applied to special projects such as conservatories, roof gardens, and water gardens.
The text is profusely illustrated with diagrams, line artwork, and full color photography, accompanied by easy-to-follow plans. In providing a comprehensive course in garden design this book, employing the professional expertise of the school, is different from any other for it treats the concept and realization of a garden in its totality.

Interesting Format and Content.......2007-07-27
This is an odd little book, but a very good one, filled with hundreds of ink drawings and with handwritten explanations of their meanings. It essentially describes architecture with a anthropologist's understanding of human motivations to build. It describes problems humans have had across cultures with their environment, and what they have built to solve these problems. I picked it up to learn some about basic architecture, and ended up learning a good deal more about...well, everything!
Book Description
In one volume, the screenplays to two contemporary classics, directed by Richard Linklater, and starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, about the immediate and life-altering attraction between two strangers.
On a train from Budapest to Vienna, Jesse, a young American student, at the end of a romance and his European trip, meets Celine, a young French woman. They are immediately attracted. Despite knowing this may be the only time they will see each other, in the next few hours in the city of Vienna, they share everything and promise to meet again. Nearly a decade later, Jesse, now a novelist on a publicity tour, sees Celine in a bnookstore in Paris. Again their time is short, and they spend it reestablishing the connection they experienced on their first meeting. Romantic, poignant, understated, and often profound, these two screenplays are sure to become classics in their own right.
Customer Reviews:
Instant Classic! Romantic Comedy at its finest .......2006-06-11
Isn't it every true Romantic's dream to meet the man or woman of your dreams, and spend at least one perfect night with your perfect mate? If so, then these screenplays are for you. Before Sunrise and Before Sunset have long been an inspiration to me, as a writer and a dreamer and a hoper, and I'm positive, if you are a writer or just a dreamer and hoper, then you too will love these nearly perfect editions of two nearly perfect love stories.
For fans, fascinating!.......2005-05-11
While it has no photos or interviews or anything, luckily this book is NOT a simple transcript of the two films as released. The book offers the original shooting scripts, and as such, it is a really interesting document for those who dig the films -- there are some deleted scenes and many extended dialogue sequences and things that were ultimately done differently when filmed, especially with SUNRISE (we learn what Jesse's job is on the train, there is a non-verbal scene at a hot dog stand, etc.). There is nothing shocking about this, but it is interesting to see what materials were deleted, shifted, and how the actors add their own bent to the written dialoge, SUNSET has no deleted scenes, but there are many deleted/ altered dialogue passages (apparently, Jesse was thinking of basing his song-based novel on the "Long and Winding Road" in the original draft, although this passage is excised from the film).
Of course, the edits were all the artists choices, whether for pacing or aesthetic reasons, so if you just want to stick with the films, fine. But for fans of these two films, I would likely say that the book will really be enjoyable, as it offers what the movies have, just more of the same!

I recently had an opportunity to glance at this book. The title makes it sound like a coffee-table book, but in fact it consists of hundereds of mini-investigations into the sources of very well-known pieces of music. Footnotes include references to other works and to primary sources. Recommend to anyone with an eclectic desire for information on music.

Book Description
In this fascinating study, an interdisciplinary team of scholars reflect on the complex conceptions, creation, and consumption of leisure in African cities from the nineteenth century to the present. Collectively, they bring together often unconnected modes of analysis, research, and debate on leisure in African studies and draw intriguing comparisons with leisure studies in Western Europe and North America.
Combining sophisticated theoretical critiques, masterly historiographical surveys, and rich empirical analyses, the various chapters poignantly capture the meanings, styles and symbols of leisure, as it is molded and marked by the spatial, temporal, and social particularities of place, time and society, of geography, history, and social structure, including the inscriptions of class, status, gender, and other social markers. Leisure is both about the ordinariness and extraordinariness of daily life, poetry and prose to the pleasures and pressures, pain and pathos, promises and possibilities of effective and affective living.
Covering leisure activities from football to music and dance, to making and watching films, videos and television in cities from Cairo to Cape Town, Dakar to Nairobi, and the traffic of cosmopolitan and transnational leisure from abroad, including from the African diaspora, the book opens a new chapter in African social and cultural studies.

Book Description
Dennis Swanberg is well-known for his humorous take on life. Ahilarious storyteller, "Dr. Swan" always has the prescription for what is ailing you. In this new book, Dr. Swan reveals his heart for the family.
"Parent-itis: a condition that results from the job of being a loving, caring parent; symptoms may include: sleepless nights, worried minds, dwindling bank accounts, messy houses, unmade beds, smudgy carpets, empty gas tanks, sticky tabletops, unfolded laundry, frequent visits to the pediatrician, full grocery carts, and empty refrigerators . . . those who contract parent-itis also receive massive quantities of love, appreciation, admiration, affirmation, and satisfaction. In summary, parentitis is both an obligation and a gift, with the value of the gift far outweighing the cost of the obligation."
Book Description
Glory Enough For All is the groundbreaking story of the Civil War cavalry battle that took place at Trevilian Station, Virginia, in June 1864, as well as the ordeal of Sheridan's second cavalry raid. After the ferocious fighting at Cold Harbor, Virginia, Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant ordered his cavalry, commanded by Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, to distract the Confederate forces opposing the Army of the Potomac. Author Eric Wittenberg chronicles the battle that resulted when Confederate cavalry pursued and caught their Federal foes at Trevilian Station, which was, perhaps, the only truly decisive cavalry battle of the Civil War. Wittenberg tells the stories of the men who fought there, including eight Union Medal of Honor winners and one Confederate whose death at Trevilian Station made him the third of three brothers to die in the service of Company A of the 4th Virginia Cavalry. It also addresses the little-known but critical cavalry battle at Samaria (St. Mary's) Church on June 24, 1864, where Union Brig. Gen. David M. Gregg's division was nearly destroyed. This well-researched study features appendixes that outline the order of battle, strengths, and losses on both sides. The only modern strategic analysis of the battle, it challenges prevailing interpretations of the Union cavalry and of General Sheridan. Eric Wittenberg shows that the outcome of Trevilian Station ultimately prolonged Grant's efforts to end the Civil War.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Campaign Study.......2005-03-25
Mr. Wittenberg makes a convincing case for the decisiveness of this cavalry battle and campaign, and his evaluations of Sheridan, Hampton, Fitz Lee, and others are fair and incisive. He did not need to prove his stature as an authority on the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac, but clearly has done so with this volume and with his subsequent works.
I had the chance to visit the Trevilian battlefield recently, and used this book as a guide. In spite of the paucity of markers (maybe that's a good thing!), it was easy to follow the action using the author's excellent endnotes, maps, and descriptions of terrain.
A local preservation group recently purchased a large portion of the June 11 battlefield, which is a very good sign. Anyone interested in the Civil War's eastern theater should not miss this book.
Just Excellent!.......2004-09-27
Mr. Wittenberg is the author of several books on cavalry operations in the Eastern Theater, all well documented, informative and very readable. This book is my personal favorite. He hits the "sweet spot", balancing a solid battlefield history with personal experiences of the participants. The history set up an experience, which amplifies and explains the history bridging the story to the next incident. The result is an informative history of Sheridan's cavalry raid in June 1864 with an in the saddle feel rarely found in nonfiction books.
The heart of the book is the battles of Trevilian Station on June 11 & 12, 1864 and Samaria Church on June 24, 1862. Trevilian Station is Sheridan's attempt to cut the vital Virginia Central Railroad and Samaria Church is Hampton's attempt to capture Sheridan's wagon train. The two battles do not stand-alone but exist in Sheridan's cavalry raid, with the raid firmly placed in Grant's Overland Campaign. This means that the reader never forgets the total operation and the war. Very often, battle histories do not include or spend very little time on the larger issues causing us to miss this vital information.
This raid contains a who's who of Eastern cavalry personalities: Philip Sheridan, Wade Hampton, Fitzhugh Lee and George Custer are well known, Thomas Rosser, Matthew Butler, Alfred Torbert, Wesley Merritt and David Gregg much less so. Each man has an interesting word portrait with a detailed account of his role. Mr. Wittenberg draws some interesting conclusions about the battle and the men. As always, his conclusions are well supported and thought provoking, making for a book that is both an introduction with something for the more knowledgeable too.
Gory Enough for All.......2002-09-25
A useful and vivid study of the largest all-cavalry battle in the Civil War. The author's trenchant criticism of Sheridan is especially interesting as he does most of his work on Michigan cavalry--thus can't be accused of Southern partisanship. It's a long and detailed account, including plenty of quotes for human interest as well as an assessment of the battle's tactical and strategic import. In a larger context, it works well to fill a gap--cavalry actions get less scholarship than I think they should--and to offer a perspective on Sheridan that differs slightly from the norm.
IT IS ABOUT TIME.......2001-10-16
It is about time that a true scholarly description of this long neglected but fascinating battle has been written. It destroys quite a number of myths! Sheridan was not invincible. The Confederate Cavalry did not die at Yellow Tavern with J.E.B. Stuart (it died at Appomattox with the rest of the ANVa). That Wade Hampton was a capable and perhaps more suitable cavalry commander for that period of the war. I bet that with even numbers that Hampton would have trounced Sheridan. As it was, outnumbered he stopped Sheridan cold and hurt him bad.
The battle is exciting, complex and had Hampton had just a little more strength Sheridan would have been in bad trouble; as it was he was hard pressed to claim any real results.
It is also hoped that this draws more attention to the preservation of this battlefield, which is in pretty good shape- but the bull dozers will come eventually.
This is a book for learning Civil War personalities, style of command, how cavalry fought in the civil war and documents this battle superbly. Well done and well worth the price od admission. I'll be on the outlook for more by Messr Wittenburg.
Outstanding Coverage of Trevillian Station Fight.......2001-08-27
Phil Sheridan's battle against the Confederates at Trevillian Station is covered in 391 pages with maps, photos, orders of battle, statistics on loses, an excellent bibliography, and index. Author Eric Wittenberg has done an outstanding job of narration, explanation, and interpretation of the battle. (Wittenberg's knowledge of the Union cavalry adds to the book immensely, as does his keen appreciation of the landscape.) This text is a treat for Civil War buffs and would be a great addition to the library of descendants of those on both sides who were participants.
Book Description
Olson turns her razor sharp vision on the Clintons' shocking excesses in their final days of office: the outrageous pardons to political cronies and friends, the looting of the White House, the executive orders that were sheer abuses of presidential power, the presidential library that is becoming a massive boondoogle of vanity more appropriate for a Third World dictator, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
What politicians will do to cling onto power.......2006-12-10
Conservative commentator Barbara Olson, who perished when the hijacked Flight 77 dove into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, reminds us with "The Final Days" precisely what sort of leeching parasites politicians can be. This is not a strict "Republican" or "Democrat" kind of thing, nor is it an issue pertaining to just "conservatives" or just "liberals." The book is not biased just because it reports only the Clinton wrongdoings, even though the author is a self-proclaimed conservative. In fact, the flip side to Olson's coin is the recently released "State of Denial" by Bob Woodward, who similarly documents the slime coursing through the current Bush administration and the ongoing war in Iraq. No, "The Final Days: The Last, Desperate Abuses of Power by the Clinton White House" merely reiterates a well-worn fact of life dominant in today's world: Power corrupts.
Olson's final account about the closing of doors in the Clinton administration should send alarm bells screeching through the minds of the American electorate, especially in a time where a Hillary Clinton run for the presidency seems almost inevitable. Olson reveals with painstaking accuracy the core tenets of Clintonism: Deny the accusations, play the helpless victim, and attack the enemy with relentless savagery. And, of course, it is permissible to lie whenever the chance arrives. When many liberal Democrats pressured him truthfully to explain everything behind the pardon of Marc Rich and his associates, President Clinton acknowledged that those he pardoned, who evaded millions in taxes and maintained connections with the Castro and Gaddafi regimes, simply had been wrongfully persecuted by the Justice Department. It is a classic example of the `victim hood' phenomenon so popularly paraded by the Clintons. Everyone seems to be a poor, pitiable victim, especially if their names end with "Clinton" and the persecutor is that dang "right-wing conspiracy." I'm afraid the term you're looking for, Mr. and Mrs. President, is "vast critical-thinking conspiracy." Or perhaps the "concerned American citizen conspiracy."
Like "State of Denial," "The Final Days" wields sharp facts to counter the myths surrounding popular politicians. Clinton may have presided over the largest economic expansion in U.S. history, but the shameless "For Sale" sign dangling around his neck during the closing days of his administration calls into question his serious character and moral flaws. Similarly, Bush may have stated "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq, but the fact that we are still there waging a failing campaign at the expense of American and Iraqi blood does not make his acts justifiable. I highly recommend both books to spark in your head the idea that maybe we need to rethink seriously the decision of putting these kinds of people in power.
A book about two topics: pardon and donation........2006-05-26
I listened to the audio version of this book. While most of the things said in this book may be true, it appears a bit biased. In addition to facts, the author uses some adjectives which show her personal dislike of the famous couple.
In the end, I had an impression that this book grew out of author's frustration upon Mark Rich pardon. Many chapters are dedicated to that case.
A disproportionately large portion of the book is devoted to two topics: pardon and donations. At one point the audio book spends a large amount of time only listing names of who donated what item. It goes on and on and on with names that make no sense and contribute nothing much to the story. That could have been moved to the appendix to keep the flow going.
I was hoping to find details about mischievious behavior by Clinton staff during the last days. There was no mention of that.
FAILING TO CROSSOVER.......2006-04-15
"The much talked about Marc Rich pardon has become an appropriate symbol of the entire eight years, but Mrs. Olson does a commendable service by clearly detailing the effrontery of his (Rich's) misdeeds, and an even more skillful demonstration of the President's specious and insulting attempt to justify this shocking act. To add fuel to her raging fire, she quotes former President Jimmy Carter who openly stated "I don't think there is any doubt that some of the factors in his pardon were attributable to his large gifts. In my opinion that was disgraceful."
Naturally, given her neo-con bent, Ms. Olsen failed to mention the extremely salient point that the attorney representing Marc Rich's pardon application was none other than Scooter Libby, Dick Cheney's aide.
Excellent and bloody right!.......2006-03-18
All of you Clinton lovers should actually learn to not turn the blind eye on many of these things Clinton did during his presidency. The last few minutes before he was impeached.
I can admit George Bush is a bad president himself but I can also admit what Bill clinton stood for. Corruption!
See the pardons such as the nationalistic terrorist group from Puerto Rico plus the tax cheat and a whole list of other losers that Clinton pardoned.
A Catalogue of Iniquities. .......2004-07-28
The last days of the Clintons were an occasion for the country to witness just how corrupt this two for the price of one team actually was. They took furniture and gifts that were not their's for the taking, and appeared to be granting pardons on the basis of what law breakers held the most influence within their circle of friends and family. From arsenic to Mark Rich, the whole squalid tale is recounted by the superlative Barbara Olso, who sadly is no longer with us.
