The worst Manga Mania book yet!.......2005-11-20
Yes millions of anime fans hate his Manga Mania because he can't do the art right and they hate his books because he hires people to do the art for him but........THIS IS THE WORST YET! Last year one of my friends showed me this book. I felt like laughing Chistopher Hart really doesn't know what anime is! He hired the worst people yet! There is like only two or three good artist (one was the one the one that did the front)and the rest of them were terrible.Most of the book is terrible mabye like ten pages are good but the rest how sad! Even if this books cover looks good don't judge a book by its cover.

I think people are forgetting that this book is suppose to be a stepping stone to designing your original characters.
This book is supposed inspire the reader and user not teach them how to draw Goku or Sailor Moon.
I'm well aware of the book's flaws.
I recommend the book based on your learning style though.
If you're quick learner get this book if not forget it.
Very "Westernized"!.......2004-12-27
When I bought this book, I was expecting a good "step-by-step" & "how-to" book. This book REALLY disappointed me! >.< I found that the drawings in the book were VERY "cartoony" & "western" looking. The drawings were all very generic & simple. Looking back at certain illustrations, I can hardly say that it looks like anime! I'm sure that this book will be promising for younger readers, but a failure to hardcore otakus! o.O
I own many manga comics & "how-to's", & I recommend the "HOW TO DRAW MANGA" series. They will give you a good start to manga drawing. Looking for a first manga series to read?? Try "Fruits Basket", by Natsuki Takaya. ^_^
A Disgrace.......2004-10-10
I would never recommend this book to anyone who takes the Animee/Manga world seriously. This book is a joke. How can I possibly learn to draw these objects with such a confusing format?
If you buy this book you will be sorry. This book is a disgrace to the art of Anime/Manga cartooning.
Not for Serious Learners.......2004-09-19
This book isn't for people who seriously want to learn how to draw animé and manga. It's obvious it was made with that in mind, but somewhere in the jumble of publication, Mr. Hart forgot that he was trying to teach the reader- not show them pretty pictures.
The book covers basic character concepts, but ones that should come intuitively to any one that has watched TV and/or gone to highschool, like the cheerleader, troublemaker, outcast, entrepeneur, farmer, and a fantasy and scifi fighters' squad. It doesn't really teach you anything you couldn't learn by going 'underground' and just buying some manga comics and teaching yourself by looking through them.
Pretty much all this book does is designate a (very general) character concept, give a brief paragraph on the type of character despite the obvious fact that all of us already understand what kind of person that character is, and then provide us with a figure and complete sketch.
I was not impressed by the main content.
On the other hand, the interviews and how-to's on working in Japan are interesting, things like equipment you may find in an animation studio and different phrases you might need to start off with if you plan to work as an artist in Japan (a rough venture).
In all, I'd say it would be best to buy a book on human anatomy and detailed character concepts, this book doesn't really make itself worth the twenty.

Although this book is a parody of the Mars and Venus trilogy, it is one I could not put down and sat on a stool in the book store laughing out loud. I had to buy it in order to finish it without being thrown out of the store on my ear. It is well worth reading, especially if you need a good laugh concerning the ongoing saga of dating. What a find!

There are serious critiscms of aspects of the Firefly 'verse in this book. But for the intelligent discerning reader, this is just what you've been looking for--people who love Firefly but are willing to critically discuss it. You may not agree with the authors of the various essays but you will share their loss and enjoy their intelligent commentary on the show.
Not for Everybody.......2007-02-07
This book is great for those who wanted to dig a little deeper into the short-lived cult show, Firefly. It's primarily made up of brief essays based on the show by various writers. Some of the essays range from thought-provoking ("Who Killed Firefly?") to humorous ("Firefly vs. The Tick") to quite useful ("Unofficial Glossary of Firefly Chinese").
A few of the contributing writers seem to miss the point of the show, but it's sometimes worth hearing their point-of-view regardless.
So basically, the book works for those fans who rewatch the episodes for fun and would like to get another fix but definitely not for the uninitiated.

If you really loved the series, then you HAVE to get this book! It gives you several different views of the characters, plots, history and imangination of this stunning and highly entertaining show. I bought it for my brother, but I ended up keeping it for myself!

Death is not a mere possibility but a certainty for all of us. Yet, today's society unrealistically portrays childhood as a time of unremittant joy and freedom. Beyond the Innocence of Childhood is a collection of forty chapters which are divided into three separate volumes. The first part of the second volume of Beyond the Innocence of Childhood focuses on the difficulties and challenges that children and adolescents must face as they try to cope with life-threatening illness or attempted suicide. Among the most popular and ubiquitous sculptures in nineteenth-century America were the ship's figurehead and the cigar-store Indian. The vast majority of these engaging human figures were created by shipcarvers-highly skilled artists celebrated for their masterful figureheads but who collectively made tens of thousands of shop figures as well, from fanciful representations of American Indians to firemen, baseball players, and fashionable women.
Shaped by nineteenth-century Anglo-American values, this artwork reflects the tenor of the times, including racial and gender stereotyping, America's emerging popular culture, and the birth of modern advertising techniques.
The Shipcarvers' Art is the first book to assess the artistry and history of these two closely related genres in a single volume. Richly illustrated and elegantly written, it reveals the intertwining of art, commerce, and shipcarving in nineteenth-century America. On March 22, 1856, for example, only four months after Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem Hiawatha was first published, the clipper Minehaha was launched at an East Boston shipyard. Its figurehead depicted a renowned English actress in her role as Hiawatha's wife, Minehaha. Central to the festivities surrounding the event were poet, actress, and shipbuilder--and a fictional image of the Native American.
Ralph Sessions not only highlights the work of shipcarvers throughout the eastern United States and Canada but also presents new information on carving workshops in New York City, America's key shipbuilding center from around 1820 until after the Civil War.
Just as they were vanishing from the bows of ships and city streets around the turn of the twentieth century, figureheads and shop figures began to experience renewed interest as museum pieces and collector's items. Welcome addition to the canon.......2005-04-22
I collect figures. I have read the books that are used for reference. I have seen the exhibit that was chaperoned by Mr. Sessions (Sandwich,MA., NYC,NY & Baltimore,MD). I am a student of the art he describes! I was impressed by his scholarship, his easy east coast art scene style of writing, his photography/graphics, his hommage to Ms. Sanburn, Mr. Pendergast & Mr. Fried (I knew him). This is not a picture atlas. This is not a coffee table book. I would have liked to seen/read more especially regarding the social relevance of color race &c.(the folly of the time theirs & ours) but this is another matter! I RECOMMEND this book to all who treasure american sculpture. The vulgar artist is finally getting his place(WELL DONE Mr Sessions! What is next?).

A Book Mostly of the Time of Sail.......2006-04-12
There was a time before ships became totally functional constructions of steel when individuality brought a soul to the vessel. And often at the bow of the ship was a bit of art that helped to define that soul.
This book is on the art and the history of figureheads and other carvings that decorated and personalized ships of the time. It is a magnificant set of photographs and descriptions that give the history of decorations applied to vessels of all kinds. It begins with drawings found of ships in times as far back as the fourth century BC and continues through the present as although the ships they graced are gone, their figureheads remain in museums, monuments in cemetaries, and otherwise preserved.
It's easy to imagine the sailing ships of yore with their figureheads as it is impossible to imagine one on the Jahre Viking, a 1,503 foot long oil tanker, or on the modern ships of the navies of the world.

carving figureheads & other nautical designs.......2002-09-07
I am quite torn on this book. It has some good ideas, and the project sections in the beginning of the book are very complete. However, the second half of the book is a different story. As you are rushed through the carvings, critical details and views are left out, some of the directions become unclear and confusing due to a poor flow in writing and bad use of verbiage, and the authors even contradict themselves on their woodcarving techniques. If you are a beginning woodcarver, be wary, you might end up a bit lost. Even though the book is a bit lacking, it may still be worth it as a reference book if you are interested in nautical carving.

Frank, a dedicated raptor enthusiast who kept fine records........1998-11-22
The late Saul Frank was dedicated to the study and preservation of peregrines in New York City. He climbed into bridge towers, overhangs of various skyscrapers, and bell towers of City churches. His friend, Ted LeViness, accompanied him on these frequent field trips, and together these men shared in the work of preserving nesting sites by advising those living or working in these areas to leave the peregrines undisturbed. Their work is most commendable and it is a pity that Mr. Saul died before his book could be widely read and praised. His work with the peregrines is a legacy for raptor lovers to continue.
