Waste of time and money.......2007-05-07
This idea for this book sold it, and I was intrigued. Alas, it was impossible to enjoy reading, and I did finally give up less than halfway through. Large type and flimsy wording is compounded by the need to refer to the back of the book's footnotes in almost every paragraph. This is so annoying and completely disrupts the flow of reading. The pictures are somewhat interesting, but the author states in the beginning that the paintings were done separately from the writing, therefore they have little relation to each other. The author apparently couldn't figure out his theme till after the illustrations were made! This too makes the book choppy. A waste of time and money.

A historical record of absurd arguments against equality.......2004-06-17
Cartoons are used for many things, from humor to ridicule, and in some cases the artist attempts to do both, which was the point of many of the cartoons in this book. The collection demonstrates a constant in the American political process. When a significant social change is proposed, those on both sides of the debate tend to use extremes in their arguments. Those opposed tend to be the worst, and their opposition generally begins with: "This is the first step to {fill in an outrageous/illogical consequence here}, so it must be prevented."
This approach can be seen in this collection of cartoons, where the expansion of woman's rights is depicted as the first step to a society where the males are pathetically subservient to the females. One cartoon has an all-female jury acquitting a male defendant "on account of his good looks." Of course, none of the dire consequences have happened, although it is very interesting to see the historical record of how cartoonists viewed the glacial political and social process that finally led to women getting the right to vote followed by full legal rights.
It is one of the greatest ironies that the bloodiest conflicts in the history of the human race provided the impetus for woman to achieve equal rights. When the men were off fighting world wars I & II, women entered the work force in massive numbers and proved that they could do the jobs previously thought too difficult for the "weaker sex." Once the wars were over, many women did not easily abandon their newfound freedoms.
The cartoons in this book are a history lesson in how absurd arguments were used for many years to deny women their natural rights and in that respect it is interesting. However, the absurd nature of the cartoons means that they are interesting in the historical sense, but in no way are they funny.

This is a hilarious book. Nobody that looked at the book could help but laugh. I found it difficult to go to the next page due to laughter.

At first glance this book seems as non-politically correct as one can get. In fact, it was with great hesitance that I finished reading the book to my daughter. I'm glad I did.
Given the contemporary climate of speech control and the like, broaching the subject of gender differences is a dangerous thing. David T. Greenberg does it with grace, humor, and a necessary amount of tongue and cheek. Using language a child would, he mimicks what is said on playgrounds and in school halls and in the minds of girls and boys.
From blaming flatulance on members of the opposite sex to pointing towards their lack of hygiene, Greenberg gives voice to both sides of the story. Children will laugh, grin, and agree that boys and girls are different, but they can be cool, uproarious, glorious and wondrous, too.

Terrible Book.......2002-11-26
Someone told me this was similar to Black Lace books. Nope. It's not. I couldn't get into the story, and I don't remember much of it. I just remember being disappointed because it wasn't a good read, black lace or otherwise.

Lost chapter finally written.......2006-06-15
I purchased a copy of this book soon after it was published.
Everyone knows some Southerners faught for the North. We have men like Admiral David Glasgow Faragut. We have West Virginia. But it turns out there is a lot more to the Southerners who sided with the North.
This book is their story. Comprehensively and state by state the author gives us their story. In addition to individuals serving in Northern state units except for South Carolina every single seceeding state contributed units to LIncoln's army. The South had no comperable formations. Yes, they had regiments from from the slave states that didn't seceed, Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri but no regiments from Pennsylvania, New York or New Jersey or any other.
This book also gives us a basic idea on what kind of men they were. For the most part they were hardly any different from those who faught for the South.
A most interesting read.
A curious niche.......2006-03-27
Current's book fills a little known niche within the body of knowledge of the American Civil War. It addresses union regiments and union loyalists, from Southern states, who fought for the north. Current reviews the bidding on a state-by-state basis addressing union support in each area. One outcome of this union support was the creation of the state of West Virginia, but Current also addresses the strong pro-union regions of the mountainous areas of Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Arkansas. It also reviews unionist support in Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. The book ends with a review of the loyalists' contribution (no worse, nor better than northern units).
Two things that struck me: first that there was more Union support than is popularly believed, and the Confederate authorities had to put considerable effort into controling their own populations. Second, it seems odd to have Confederate rebels become quite upset about rebels (or tories as they called them) in their own midst.
A bit unsettling to the Lost Cause diehards..........2003-04-22
After getting stationed in Georgia back in 1997, I became interested in the cause of the Southern Unionists. As a CivWar reenactor I found this subject to be on one hand totally verbotten for polite fireside conversation. On the other, some interest but little information. Thank God over the last few years several books have come out to help fill that info gap. The South vs The South(poorest of the group), Lincoln's Loyalists, and Guerillas, Unionists,& Violence On the Confederate Homefront(very good!) have done alot for these forgotten souls. The best remains Lincoln's Loyalists, my orginal was permantly borrowed by a "rebel" buddy and passed about throughout the greyback community. Finally I've found another copy! Even for hardcore seesch, this book is a must read for anyone studying this sad chapter of our nations history.
Well-Written and Surprising.......2000-03-03
Most readers will probably be astonished to learn how extensive support for the Union was among white southerners during the Civil War. The author provides a detailed, state-by-state description of organized military units from the southern states that fought for the Union. A final chapter summarizes the statistics -- something that I found particularly helpful. I hope that many southerners will read this book and be inspired to seek out their own Loyal ancestors. This chapter of southern history desperately needs to be better known.

I wouldn't say that this book was an eye opener, but I definately can not say that this is a waste. It's a very non-standard, maybe a little bit conservative, view on many everyday things.
I would reccomend to read it to lots of my friends.

For thinkers..........2007-02-27
Dennis Prager is not your typical talk radio host. His show is more about ideas than anything else. Like he says, "on my show we talk about everything in life." That is the impressive thing about this book--it covers a wide range of topics that will make you think, a second time. If you're a little burned out from all the political books out there--no matter if you are left or right, you should give this one a read.
A GREAT Book and Exercise for Your Mind.......2006-06-18
By thinking, and rethinking, the author is able to dissect issues and ideals to a very clear and understandable core. He then shows how many flaws enter into the rebuilding of those issues resulting in a society that likes to be followers, rather than thinkers.
If you think once, you will see the light. If you continue to think about issues in the manner in which the author does, all will be revealed. It is amazing how everything comes down to the same core principles, that most people would agree with if the took the time and made the effort to think.
This book should be required reading for every college student.
