Product Description

The waning of the century-old modernist movement in the arts has called forth an astonishing array of artistic and critical responses. The twenty-five essays in Art After Modernism provide a comprehensive survey of the most provocative directions taken by recent art and criticism, exploring such topics as the decline of the ideology of modernism in the arts and the emergence of a wide range of postmodern practices; recent directions in painting, film, video and photography; visual artists' investigations of mass-media systems and imagery; and the dynamics of the social network in which art is produced and disseminated. This major collection is an indespensable guide to the ideas and issues animating this decade's art the far-reaching cultural reorientation known as postmodernism.

3 out of 5 stars Great essays, but high redundancy rate for anyone who already owns a postmodern anthology.......2007-07-08

Art After Modernism is a nice collection of postmodern/poststructural essays from some important theorists such as Barthes, Foucault, Foster, Hughes, Jameson, Mulvey, and others. My problem is that almost all (if not, indeed, everyone single one) of these essays are available elsewhere. I believe almost everything here is also represented in the far superior Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism. Now many anthologies do we need of Laura Mulvey's "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema"? It's a great essay, but it's in EVERY anthology and she DID write other essays.

It seems that every collection wants to represent the fundamental texts - the widely influential articles that everyone should know. That's great, but it's already been done and done better than this. I cannot see what is unique about this collection. While it's about half the price of the Norton anthology, it's less than a quarter of the size of the Norton and without the copious editorial comments and clarifications.

The theme is ostensibly "Art After Modernism", but isn't that just another way of saying "postmodernism"? These essays are no more specific to art than any other collection of postmodern theory and aesthetics. There are a few essays that deal with "rethinking representation", but the majority are simply the core of postmodern texts. There's really nothing unique here.

If you don't already own essays such as Baudrillard's "The procession of the simulacra" or Barthes' "From work to text", I suppose this is worth its price, but I would recommend spending a little more money and stepping up to something more comprehensive.

The essays themselves = Five Stars *****
Whoever decided we needed yet another redundant collection = Zero Stars

This book contains a good variety of projects with clear instructions and very easy to read graphs. The beaded nativity ornaments project (pages 8-15)is one of my current projects. I've not seen a similar project in any other craft book.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Spirit; Interesting Colors.......2005-02-27

Contains 13 Spirit stories, with odd coloring. Anyone used to the DC Comics "Spirit Archives" will find it different. They're not bad or anything, just recolorized. But nonetheless, it contains some good Spirit adventures, which is why to purchase it in the first place.

This is the first of three "Spirit Color Albums" from Kitchen Sink Press. The second volume contains more recognizable Spirit stories, but this one is still strong. It should be noted, the best Spirit collection is the "Spirit Casebook", even if it's in black and white.

Stories included: "The Perfect Crime", "Hangly Hollyer Mansion", "Hanzel And Gretel", "Cinderella", "Life Below", "Mr. McDool", "The Emerald Of Rajapur", "The O'Dolan", "The Guilty Gun", "Ten Minutes", "Black Gold", "Sammy And Delilah" and "The Origin Of The Spirit" (The Harvey Comics version from the 60's)

Surely there are few untold stories about Hughes, the brilliant inventor and shrewd businessman who pioneered commercial aviation, became the only individual ever to personally own a movie studio, led Trans World Airlines to become the preeminent international air carrier, womanized his way across the tabloid headlines of the 1920s and '30s, and descended into frightful paranoia and drug addiction in his old age. Authors Broeske and Brown concentrate on the womanizing in this entertaining biography, which chronicles Hughes' affair with Katharine Hepburn, among many others.

              Book Description

Howard Hughes was one of the most amazing, intriguing, and controversial figures of the twentieth century. He was the billionaire head of a giant corporation, a genius inventor, an ace pilot, a matinee-idol-handsome playboy, a major movie maker who bedded a long list of Hollywood glamour queens, a sexual sultan with a harem of teenage consorts, a political insider with intimate ties to Watergate, a Las Vegas kingpin, and ultimately a bizarre recluse whose final years and shocking death were cloaked in macabre mystery. Now he is the subject of Martin Scorsese's biopic The Aviator. Few people have been able to penetrate the wall of secrecy that enshrouded this complex man. In this fascinating, revelation-packed biography, the full story of one of the most daring, enigmatic, and reclusive power brokers America has ever known is finally told.

5 out of 5 stars I thought about this book for weeks, after reading it..........2007-08-10

After finally watching the Aviator, I wanted to know more about Howard Hughes' life but wasn't sure which book to get since there were so many out there to choose from. The Untold Story turned out to be one of the most moving books I've read. I previously only knew him according to the reputation he had in his final years: bizarre recluse, deranged, weirdo, bilionnaire.

Howard Hughes was an ace pilot. The 200 ton Spruce Goose was his personal triumph. This books brings to light his outlandish reality and his extraordinary and adventurous personal life: the many movies he produced, and his amazing influence on Hollywood censorship, purchasing the most Las Vegas resorts owned by one person, the McCarthy era, even Watergate and the fall of Nixon. It covers the many famous actresses he discovered, his womanizing and dating nearly every leading glamor queen. Jean Harlow, Ava Gardner, Giner Rogers, and Katharine Hepburn all dated this handsome playboy. It explains his passion of aviation, perilous record breaking flights as well as his three plane crashes, and his development of commercial flights (TWA). Howard Hughes was a genius inventor and head of a giant corporation which produced oil drill tools (which he inherited from his father). The book reveals his emotionally incestuous ties to his mother. his addictions, breakdowns and recoveries, disappearing acts such as when he locked himself in a studio room, didn't bathe for months, and watched the same movies 30 times in a row, eating only Hershey bars. His now-famous but then unknown obsessive-compulsive disorder produced full blown food fetishes such as counting chocolate chips in each germ-free cookie and eating his peas with a small rake. Who knows what might have happened, and how history might have changed, if doctors knew about Prozac in those days?

The circumstances of his death remain mysterious and puzzling - to this day, no one is sure about how he died. Like his life, it was covered in a wall of secrecy. A compelling, sympathetic, and well-researched story (nearly 400,000 pages of court documents, 2,000 pages of FBI reports, and 600 interviews were used) about one of the most controversial, intriguing and extraordinary people.

              3 out of 5 stars Starlets.......2007-04-02

After a while I got really tired of all of these starlets stories. I couldn't stop thinking " what a jerk" and how stupid all of these girls, and worse yet, their parents were.

              4 out of 5 stars Quite a lothario!.......2007-02-09

I had read an earlier book on Hughes, Empire: The Life, Legend, and Madness of Howard Hughes, and remembered it as a fascinating book. I purchased recently this newer book on Hughes, Howard Hughes: The Untold Story.

It, too, was fascinating in its own National Inquirer kind of way! This particular book dealt more with Hughes' womanizing more than with his business empire. We are treated with endless stories of Hughes' conquest of Hollywood actress beginning in the early 20's up until his final pursuit of women in the late 1950s.

The stories are truly fascinating to read and Brown's and Broeske's writing style certaining kept me engaged. One just has to wonder how one would have acted in Howard's place as he pursued women on a daily basis while in Hollywood. Simply amazing!

The one drawback about this book that I was not anticipating was what made it so interesting: its dedication to his lothario lifestyle. In other words, by the time the story of Jean Peters (his last wife) rolls around, along with his last attempted affair with the starlet Yvonne Shubert, one starts to tire of reading exclusively about his sexual conquests.

I found myself wondering how all of this tied in with his businesses. The authors did throw in just enough about his businesses for it all to make sense, but I don't think there was enough. In other words, this book dealt almost entirely with his sex life than anything else. There were enough tidbits about his paranoia, his germophobia, his Hollywood movie making, and his aviation exploits to keep the book moving.

I recommend this book to read about the personable side of Howard and the book, Empire, to read about the business side of Howard. Both are excellent.

              5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating man..........2006-09-07

I watched Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator" and was immediately interested in learning about the "real" Howard Hughes. This book more than satisfied my curiosity. I wasn't aware of the non-aviation contributions made by Hughes; satellites, seek and destroy missles. All very important to our national security. I had never heard of Hughes' connection to the Watergate scandal until I read this book.

This publication was a page turner about a man that we'll most likely never learn the full truth about. A great read!

              5 out of 5 stars Interesting & Entertaining.......2006-08-07

I first read this book to see what Howard Hughes was all about. I was not disappointed in the writing or information. It was well written and a page turner.

I read bio books to learn more about the personal side of people - their lives & feelings/views on matters, how they handled personal situations more than just facts of their accomplishments. So therefore, this book was a great fit for me.

A few reviews have said the book should have focused more on the specifics of how he handled his business affairs. This to me would be much more boring. There is just enough details of how and why he came up with his inventions, mechanics of flying, and drive to make profits without putting us to sleep.

Enjoy a great read and learn about a fascinating person at the same time!

More than a biography...this is a study of the breaking down of cultural norms and social taboos in the period of European history when the status of the artist was shifting from servant to an icon to be worshipped. Perenyi knows her 19th century literature and history. This bio reads like a novel spiced with colorful and controversial characters who are both flawed in their humanity...like you and I, and ingrained with genius...unlike us. Franz Liszt could be the poster child for the "Romantic" ideal. A wonderful read and hard to put down. Well done, Mrs. Perenyi!

                                        Book Description

In using case studies such as Touching the Void (2003) and the films of Nick Broomfield, this timely introduction to the growing field of documentary explores the definition and understanding of the form, as well as the relationship between documentary and drama, specifically the notion of reconstruction and reenactment. Paul Ward also discusses animated documentaries, the fertile genre of comedy, and feature-length contemporary works that have achieved widespread cinematic release.

                                        4 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2006-07-10

                                        Good overview of the subject.

Interesting chapter/discussion on Aileen Wuornos, America's most famous female serial killer, and the 4 movies made about her.

A nice primer on the subject. Only downside is the author's tendency to concentrate on BBC films and programs that aren't available for rent or purchase in most of the world.

4 out of 5 stars Guide book for everyone.......2007-02-17

This is a guide book, almost a dictionary for those interested in obtaining more information regarding drug prevention and drug use and how to deal with it.
It is an easy to read and follow book with understandable small chapters that answer your questions on drug abuse and prevention.
Even if there is not a problem at home with this issue, it should be read to hopefully prevent it from happening. The best thing is that it explains and also gives short examples so understanding is easier.
I will re-read it again and again to put its recommendations into practice at home.

4 out of 5 stars Dr Spock for the drug generation.......2004-06-21

Frank Simonelli has written the parent's handbook for preventing their kids from falling into the dark world of drugs. This is a book every parent should have and read.
Mr. Simonelli approaches the problem of drug abuse from the whole family approach. Stressing self-esteem and a positive approach to head off problems rather then a "scolding" too late reaction to a child's experimenting with drugs.

4 out of 5 stars A damn good practical manual........2004-06-21

I don't know if this Frank Simonelli Jr is a genius or what, but somehow he's managed to get right to the heart of the matter right away. This is THE book for parents who want to help their kids avert the lifestyle of addiction, rather than trying to save their kids once their knee deep in drugs and alcohol. This book spells out the concrete, hands on ways parents can help their children. This isn't all that tocuhy-feely crap theory about breast feeding written by dead doctors with names that rhyme with "annoyed", this is a practical, hands on way for parent's to get involved and PARTICIPATE in their children's' lives.

My only suggestion for improving the book is in the next round of publishing Mr. Simonelli correct all pronouns to be gender inclusive.

In this first edition, the book always refers to the "he / him" rather than the "she / her" however, daughters are just as susceptible to the ravages of drug abuse as son's. Something I'm sure can easily be changed for the second edition, as this one is sure to sell out.

Other than that I think it an insightful, powerful work, super helpful and very informative.

                                        I HIGHLY recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Resource for Parents.......2004-06-20

As a parent, I have an intense interest in making sure my two kids stay away from drug use. I saw this book advertised in a parenting magazine and thought it might have some tips I could use. The price was low enough to take the chance.

I think it's an absolutely a must-have. It's written in a "Five Minute Manager" sort of style, so you can pick out the problems and related solutions quickly. I've used three or four of the tips already -- so far, so good! It's easy to refer back to for a refresher. Highly recommended. It's definitely worth the small investment.

Fast paced and very hard to put down, this book really gets you into the WWII evasion experience. The sense of urgency and suspense really comes through...my heart was racing as I read about downed airmen stealing clothes to blend in with the locals and racing away from the scene of the crash, sometimes right through German troops. This book really highlights the efforts and risk of the collaborators, and just how dedicated they were to doing their part in the war effort. A very highly recommended read!

"Aircraft down" by Philip D. Caine, sub-titled: "Evading Capture In WWII Europe". Brassey's, Dulles, Virginia, 1997

The author is a retired Brigadier General, United States Air Force, where he was once responsible for training at the Air Force Academy for "SERE (survival, evasion, resistance, escape). This gave him a professional interest in the history of evaders in Nazi occupied Europe. Philip D. Caine has also written books on Americans serving in in the Royal Air Force, (e.g. in the "Eagle Squadron") including "American Pilots In The RAF".

In this book, "Aircraft Down", he has drawn on his training and experience to write six separate stories, of individuals and crews, shot down behind the lines in enemy held Europe. The first three stories deal with Americans who were flying in the RAF. These three were fighter pilots, who came down alone. They were not alone on the ground, however, as they all needed the help of the local populace to escape Nazi searchers.

The fifth story is different: the entire crew of a B-17 Flying Fortress comes down on the island of Corfu, off the coast of Albania/Greece. Here, again, the common thread is that he local populace has to work together to first provide refuge for the evaders and then to provide a means of escape.

In all of the stories in this book, the author has worked to put a human face on the evaders. His research has been sufficient to give a personal memoir flavor to each story, and his follow-up on post war meetings, provides a sense of closure to the story. He relates the excitement when an evader meets the same woman working in the same field as on the day he was shot down, some 40+ years ago.

The book is concluded with a very short chapter entitled, "The Art Of Evasion And Survival", which points up that the personal resourcefulness of the downed pilot is often the key to a successful escape. General Caine has avoided the usual impersonal book, often written by General Officers, dealing with statistics numbers and unit identification, all at the "higher" strategic level. Instead, happily, he has used personal interviews and much research to provide a fine book telling the stories almost as if they were all personal memoirs.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Detailed & Entertaining.......2001-11-01

I found this book gives a lot of insight to evaders and some of the less well known facts of the war. The book has a fairly fast pace but also has a lot of detail. The first three stories deal with downed flyers in France and Belgium who eventually made it to Spain and then British held Gibraltar. Spain was sympathetic to Germany, and treated evaders harshly until 1943 when it became politically necessary for them to develop a better relationship with the Allies.

The fourth story is of a later evader in Belgium who was able to meet the oncoming Allies in 1944 instead of going to Spain. The fifth story details the evasion of an entire bomber crew from the island of Corfu over to Albania. They stayed at a guerilla camp in the mountains and eventually escaped by ship to Italy after much hardship. The final story is of of a flyer who evaded through Italy. Originally captured by the Germans upon landing, he was released from jail with many others when Italy signed an armistice with the allies. He spent the rest of his time evading the Germans and travelling around Italy (with much help from Italian partisans) and finally escaping to the Allied lines after many setbacks.

One of the central themes of the book is the sacrifice made by the occupied population to feed and help the Allied fliers escape. Every story has a follow-up at the end about the later life of the evader and what happened to the people that helped them evade (if known).

                                        5 out of 5 stars Gripping.......2000-08-05

Do not start reding this book if you have important things to do because you will not be able to put it down. The book chronicles the evasion of several downed airmen in WWII Europe, how they evaded, the people that helped them and the trials and risks they endured. It is well written and informative and will make you glad that you never had to fly in combat, bail out of a plane or crash land and find yourself in a lonely and hostile land.

5 out of 5 stars gripping and terrific!.......1999-05-03

Telling the stories of 6 separate evasion episodes in Europe in WWII, General Caine writes a gripping book. I literally could not put down this book once started! Other than screaming "screenplay", the true tales are incredible and fascinating. The evasion stories are detailed enough to make sense, but not a textbook to confound you. The risks taken by the underground and resistence are as powerful as the efforts of the airmen who get back alive. This is a GREAT book; ideal for anyone with any interest in history, WWII, human courage, and escape sagas.

This is the most complete and authoritative reference book about the birds of North America -- up to date and in field-guide format.

The Birder's Handbook is the first of its kind: a portable library of fascinating information not included in your identification guide. For each of the 646 species of birds that breed in North America, The Birder's Handbook will tell you at a glance:

                                          * Where the bird nests, and which sex(es) build(s) the nest;
                                          * How many eggs the bird lays, what they look like, which patent incubates and for how long, and how the young are cared for;
                                          * Food preferences and foraging habits.

You will also find information about displays and mating, wintering, conservation status, and much more. In addition, The Birder's Handbook contains some 250 short essays covering all aspects of avian natural history.

5 out of 5 stars Odd duck, but good.......2004-07-30

Definately not for the casual reader...

This book is really two books. One is a book on details of specific birds, the other a collection of essays on a wide ranging set of subjects. Both are very interesting and usable, but the book is structured such that the bird details are always on the left page, the essay on the right. Sometimes the essays are a fit with the bird details, sometimes not. Sometimes the essay continues on for several pages...

Purchase of this books should really be combined with either the old three volume Audubon Master Guide, or older editions of Peterson (west and east), or a couple of other older field guides. You may have to hunt used books for a match. As indicated in the reviews below, the detail pages are loaded with cryptic little symbols that reference specific plates and pages in these other older guides.

There is quite a lot of detail here, it is not a thin book, so don't plan on carrying it in the field much past the interior of your car. The size raises another issue. Updating this thing is not going to be an easy task. I suspect this 1988 edition is going to be what you get for a looong time.

                                          4 out of 5 stars Birder's Handbook praise..........2003-06-23

Great reference book, though NOT portable. Because this book came out in 1988, it needs updating: bird name changes have occured and there is more information from research to add to the wealth of information it already contains. Birder's Handbook uses various editions of field guides as reference points, that is, it points to particular pages of those field guides for a bird illustration or photo as well as range maps. And because those field guides have been updated in the intervening years, the page numbers are not true.
I look forward to another edition of this book!

This is a good book but you have to get used to the format and organization. To be honest I generally use one of my other books for id and basic info then I go to this book for more details. The details are fantastic though. I'd be very sad if I didn't have this in my collection because I learn a lot each time I use it. The format/use of symbols is just a bit awkward. Shouldn't deter you though - its great to have on hand

5 out of 5 stars An essential bird watcher's guide........2000-07-03

When I'm not on the trading floor, I spend my free time watching birds. I would say that it wasn't until I picked up this essential birder's guide that I became an experienced and knowledgeable birder. This book increased my ability to identify birds, thus making bird watching infinitely more enjoyable. Since purchasing the Birder's Handbook, my weekend hobby has blossomed into an intense love for birds. I highly reccommend this to anyone with any level of interest in birding.

4 out of 5 stars Treasure Trove - and the map is appropriately cryptic.......1999-04-26

This book isn't as immediately appealing as some of its competition, and its organizational scheme, and heavy use of symbols, can put you off. Use it for a week, though. I agree with another review in being mildly frustrated with its excessive use of symbols, often when a tiny printed word would have done the same work. But it's indispensible, and I'd recommend it to everyone.

A number of unique choices set this one apart. At first I was somewhat irritated by the placing of broader essays on the right page next to the species descriptions on the left. Then, with long use, it became clear to me just how well that worked. It's the perfect browsing format - just right for when you go to learn more about the thing you just saw. Also, the essays are written above the individual species level, so you can start out reading about Cowbirds and end up understanding the issue of nest parasitism, and the human impact on birds that practice it, far more completely than you would if you'd read Kenn Kaufmann's individual species description. It works.

There are some formatting issues here that do puzzle me. I don't really see the virtue in ordering the birds to correspond with the order in the NGS guide. There are other guides, to begin with, and now that we're about to get a new NGS guide, even the page numbers are going to be wrong. In any case, I can't see how you'd easily flip from one book to the other unless you were reading them sequentially. Who does that?

But those are quibbles. This is a terrific book, quite useful as a complement to your field guide and very nice to just read through. It could use a face lift, but it's got a heart of gold.

Geared to beginning birders, the Handbook includes useful advice about selecting binoculars, looking for identification markings, even sketching birds. The presentation follows the usual Dorling Kindersley format: lots of annotated color photographs and illustrations; straightforward text penned by a recognized expert; and helpful appendices on related topics like birdwatching ethics, building a reference library, birding organizations, and taxonomy. A chapter on "Birding Hot Spots" provides maps and locations of particularly rich birding regions throughout North America, while those with a burgeoning interest will appreciate an overview on photographing and recording birds. This is not an ID guide (try National Geographic's Field Guide to the Birds of North America for that), and it's not meant to be carried in the field, but for a would-be birder looking to get started it's a fine primer.

                                                  Book Description

Until now there has been no single, comprehensive resource on the status of North America's most threatened birds and what people can do to help protect them. Birder's Conservation Handbook is the only book of its kind, written specifically to help birders and researchers understand the threats while providing actions to protect birds and their habitats. Jeffrey Wells has distilled vast amounts of essential information into a single easy-to-use volume-required reading for anyone who loves birds and wants to ensure they are protected. At-a-glance species accounts cover in detail North America's one hundred most at-risk birds; each account is beautifully illustrated by today's top bird artists. The text includes status, distribution, ecology, threats, conservation actions and needs, and references. A distribution map accompanies each entry. Chapters discuss birds as indicators of environmental health, the state of North American bird populations, major conservation issues, and initiatives now underway to improve the health of North America's birds.

Birder's Conservation Handbook is an indispensable resource for birdwatchers, researchers, naturalists, and conservationists. Reading it will inspire you to become an active steward of our birds and the habitats we share.
