informative overview of ancient Greek art.......2004-12-16
This is great as a nice introductory survey of artwork, some myth, and some history of ancient Greece. Carpenter divides the book into chapters and sections according to important characters (heroes, Olympian gods) and events (Trojan War and its aftermath). In each, he provides a good overview, brings in historical and contextual information to provide narratives to the relevant artworks he provides at the end of the section (which is rather inconvenient to have to keep flipping the pages if you don't know what he's referring to). Themes, characterization, attributes, trajectories etc etc can all found in this book which is quite compact for the amount of information it provides.
Good basic introduction.......2000-05-15
A good undergraduate source of the visual images that are one survival form of the classical myths. Basic information about ancient art gives the reader just enough knowledge to understand technically why certain traits appear, such as the different "color" of males and females. Packed with pictures, it is an excellent source for both classical studies and art history at the undergraduate level.

A Beautiful Read of A Guilty Pleasure.......2007-08-08
I just received my copy of Crystal Lake Memories as of yesterday. Since opening up the box that it was packaged in (packaged beautifully by Amazon..Thanks Guys! You're the best!!!!) I was not able to put it down. This is truly a definitive book on one of the most storied franchises in the history of american film making. From the beautiful cover, to the foreward and preface by Sean Cunningham and Peter Bracke, a tapestry woven in beautiful shades of crimson red begins to take shape. I have been a film of classic "horror" films since I was a teen, and yes, Friday the 13th has been and always will be one of the hallmark pictures within the genre that was so much a part of my youth. One should not take these films too seriously, and I have certainly gained a new perspective of these films since reading through the this beautiful book.
One reviewer stated so appropriately that it was a "bloody" shame (sorry guys) that such a book was not available for films such as "Alien" or "Halloween". Although I do reserve hope that such volumes will be written and rendered for devotees of those particular film franchises. They are certainly deserving. In short, my purchase of Crystal Lake Memories is one that I am happy to have made. It is beautifully rendered in every way, shape and form. Beyond the shade of crimson red, lyes a deeper and more sentimental look at everyone involved with this franchise. From the veteran filmmakers, to the effervescent actors and adoring fans, this book documents it all with tremendous detail and devotion. Kudos Mr. Bracke for bringing us such a fun and informative read.
Fan of the Films? BUY THIS BOOK!.......2007-08-07
As a huge "Friday the 13th" fan I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. It's the most indepth look at each of the films, and the TV series out there. Peter Bracke culled together interviews with almost everyone in Hollywood who was associated with one of the films. There are countless stories by the cast and crew of each film. You are presented the good, the bad and the ugly details of each production. The book is broken into sections by movie title, and almost everyone involved in that particular movie gets to speak about their experience, most do so without pulling any punches. I can't recommend this book highly enough to fans of the series.

Book Description
This riveting exposé of Yoko Ono covers her early life growing up as the eldest daughter of a wealthy Japanese family and her personal experience as a result of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima at the end of the World War II. Detailed are her move to New York for schooling during the 1950s, her first marriage to a composer, and her early days as an experimental artist in London during the early 1960s. New light is shed on her initial meeting with John Lennon and their 13-year relationship, and the rebuilding of her life after his tragic murder. Her life as artist, musician, businesswoman, and mother are explored from her youth to the present.
Customer Reviews:
Boring.......2007-08-17
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning anything new about Yoko Ono and her marriage to John Lennon. While it did explore some of Yoko's early years, there wasn't very much detail about her life since the death of Lennon.
A mixed bag (one bad apple).......2007-08-07
I was really enjoying this book until I came to the 'After John' section authored by Mr. Clayson. Until then, I found it to be a very balanced and informative account of Ms. Ono's life, with intelligent critical analysis of her work and her place in cultural history.
Then suddenly (snark) I found myself in the presence of a (snark) "personality", a writer who seemed to believe (snark) that I was as interested in him (snark) and his snarky little prose as I was in her. ("Who is this jerk?" I found myself saying aloud just two paragraphs into Clayson's piece). Ugh. Ugh. One could almost sense the hand of an editor on his shoulder, occasionally injecting a sentence of bare fact into the (snark) narrative.
That said, I'm happy to be proceeding to what appears to be a return to the good form of the earlier chapters, with the final chapter on her art and music, happily not authored by (snark) Mr. Clayson. Ugh.
Overall: I'd recommend it at the price it's selling for here used. Just hold your nose through the third section, and then look for a source that treats Ms. Ono's 'post-John' biography with a little more seriousness.
Please, don't waste your money!.......2007-04-02
Many passages were written in an overtly hostile manner and saddled with the same tired cliches one has come to expect when reading about Yoko Ono. If that is not enough, this book is riddled with inaccurate facts from beginning to end...For instance, I'm no astrologer, but it's pretty well-accepted knowledge that like Yoko, those born on February 18 are born under the sign of Aquarius, not "Pices," as the book tells us. And contrary to what the book states, the Dakota apartment building where Ono resides is not on the Upper East side, but located on the Upper West Side. Even more disconcerting though, is the butchering of quotes previously put forth in other publications. For example, the authors write that Ringo Starr (when going to the Dakota shortly following Lennon's death) "muttered 'It was her who started all this'," as to imply....well, frankly, I'm not sure what! Regardless, what Ringo ACTUALLY said in an early 1980's interview when describing how he gently tried to quell Yoko's initial reluctance to meet his fiance during that difficult time was, "Remember, you started all this..." In other words, he was acknowledging that it was John and Yoko -- with their insistance upon being acknowledged as "a cohesive unit" despite protestations from those around them -- set the bar for recognizing importance of this type of togetherness. Basically, if one purchases this book, they are paying for 207 pages of junk.
A great biography for a remarkable woman.......2007-01-11
This is the first accomplished and serious book about one of the greatest artists of the 20th century: Yoko Ono. Villified and misunderstood, Ono now is getting some acknowledgement for her impressive works in music, arts and her political activism. This book is definitely a must.
Horrible.......2006-08-19
I bought this book at Powell's in Portland, Oregon, after hearing about it for several years. What a disappointment. Not only is it horribly written, but it includes sections by several different writers, most of which repeat the same ignorant and negative prejudices spewed against Yoko for years. If you are looking for a well written, objective, intelligent, indepth biography of this intriquing woman, you will not find it here. Sad...Save your money.

Lost in Space: Shifres' s Contrived Story.......2001-02-25
While there are some similarities between Ib Melchior's Space Family Robinson and Irwin Allen's Lost in Space, similar comparisons can be drawn between Melchior's idea, Allen's series and Johann Wyss's books.
Since Ed Shifres also brings to light that another party also had a Space Family Robinson Concept, he briefly states that this other treatment has no similarities... I would like to see that treatment.
Shifres brings to light the struggle of a screenwriter and his failure to sell a story. As Melchior was told 30 years ago, and again at the on-set of Lost in Space the movie, he has no case that would stand in court. It didn't seem to me that Melchior exhausted every avenue to pursue CBS and Irwin Allen, and gave up all to quickly.
Shifres all but says Allen stole Melchior's work, but Shrifes does a better job at suggesting Melchior is nothing more than an opportunist seeing a chance to profit from litigation.
Shrifes also taints his own credibility by stating that Melchior's first choice to play the mother of the space family was June Lockhart, yet on page 266 where Melchior lists his casting suggestions, June Lockhart is noticeably not on the list.
Melchior and Allen had their connections. In the race to see their respective projects to fruition, Allen came in first because his treatment of the concept is far superior than Melchior's. Melchior couldn't sell his product for one reason. IT IS TERRIBLE.
As a budding author on a subject of local history, I know for fact that I have competition. We're all racing to be first to complete the project, sell it, and publish it. If I'm not first at the finish line, I won't be looking for Mr. Shifres to do a story on me.
Shifres sings Melchior's sour grapes.
The True Oxymoron.......2000-05-25
As a devoted fan of Irwin Allen's "Lost In Space" tv series, I read Shrifts book "Lost In Space, the True Story" with about as much as an open mind as I could. I believe that Shrifts were able to prove through his research that Ib Melchior's Space Family Robinson concept was not the same concept as Dell Publishing's Space Family Robinson comic book series, that said comic book series had nothing to do with any never produced Disney version of Space Family Robinson or that Ib Melchior had absolutely nothing to do with either the comic book or the alleged Disney film. Furthermore, why would even Disney be interested in producing such a film after their hugely successful and very faithful adaption of Johann Wyse's original story? However, when it comes to Mr. Allen's Lost In Space concept and Mr. Melchior's, Shrifts' just manages to stir up quite a controversy over said property, and while not directly accusing Mr. Allen of plagiarism, does quite a good job of implying it and therby tarnishing the good name and reputation of Irwin Allen. I read Ib Melchior's screenplay for his Space Family Robinson, and I found nothing similar between his and Allen's Lost In Space pilot script, "No Place to Hide".
1.)One family, named Robinson is leaving the Earth in a saucer shaped spacecraft to begin the massive colonization effort of a planet in the Alpha Centauri star system. Meteors damage their ship and they crash land on an alien planet and struggle to survive there.
2.) Another family, also named Robinson, is in deep space when their ship is struck by asteroids and they abandon it via the escape craft and crash land on an alien planet and learn to struggle to survive there.
That there is where the similarities end. Both families are quite different.
3.)Allen's script has a father named John Robinson who is a professor of astrophysicists. Melchior's father is named David Robinson who is an astro-scientist. 4.)Allen has a mother named Maureen Robinson who holds a doctorate in biochemistry. Melchior's mother is named Elisabeth Robinson who does not hold a doctorate in biochemistry. 5.) Allen's eldest child is named Judy who is aged 19 and whose interest is in musical comedy and has no interest in science. Melchior's eldest child is a male named Mark Robinson whose interest is in laser surgery. 6.) Allen's middle child is named Penny Robinson whose interest is in zoology. The middle child in Melchior's script is also another male named Frank Robinson who has a strong scientific interest in a number of fields. 7.) Allen's youngest child is a 10-year-old boy whose name is Will Robinson whose interest is in electronics and has no pet companion other than a strange ostrich (and his favorite companion later becomes Dr Smith and or the Robot). Melchior's script has a child who is another ten-year-old boy who's a lover of animals and is a lover of experimenting and exploration and whose favorite companion is a dog named Scout. 8.) In Allen's script last member is the Robinson's friend and co-pilot, Dr Donald West who holds a degree in Geology. (This character is later changed to that of a pilot in the United States Space Corps.) The last member in Melchior's script is the Robinson's voyage is named Crewman Tate who does not hold any sort of degree in geology, nor is he the pilot of the ship. 9.)Also, Allen's ship is named "Gemini 12" and later becomes the "Jupiter 2". Melchior's ship is named the "Alpha" and is not a colonization vessel.
And yet, despite these key differences, Shrifts still goes on to say in his book that Allen ripped off Ib Melchior and by also furthering his claim that it was his concept and his characters and he should be entitled to justice and the credit due him. It's clear that despite the charges outlines in Shrifts' book, Allen's Lost In Space concept was distinctly simillar to Melchior's. When Allen was told informed of Melchior's concept, he probably had examined his script analyzed so that there were no similarities and if there were, to greatly change them, such as the title. But Shrifts' doesn't state that in his book, nor do he have detail all of the key differences that I have outlined in from his book, "Lost In Space, The True Story." between Allen's and Melchior's concepts. I believe if Shrifts had done this, he would not have had a reason for writing a book nor would he have made a tidy profit off of it. As far as I'm concerned, Ib Melchior's cannot be credited with creating with the "Lost in Space" that was seen on the CBS television network. His concept and his characters were quite different from Allen's concept and characters and that I believe is the true reason why he did not and could not pursue legal litigation. And as a result, he was not entitled to any of the credit or monetary compensation allegedly due him. Shrfits said it himself in his own book; a name and title cannot be copyrighted. I believe that Allen did have Melchior's script. After Melchior's attorney, Don Leon informed him, he got a copy of Melchior's script and closely examined it for the sole purpose of eliminating any similarities such as the title, concept and format for the TV series. If Allen had stolen Melchior's idea, than the characters would have been exactly the same, which they were not. The whole purpose of the spaceflight was different, as well as the story. I also believe that Melchior's attorney believed that the real purpose he advised his client not to pursue the matter was that he would not have won. Irwin Allen's Lost In Space aptly sabotaged Melchior's Space Family Robinson movie, which is unfortunate, but it's a fact of life.
I also believe that the world is not any worse off without Melchior's other "neo-classics" such as his "Columbus of the Stars," "Gulliver's Space Travels," etc. "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" was a pretty dull movie and I hardly impressed with it especially with the more exciting, and original science fiction movies that were yet to come.
Ed Shifres wouldn't know the truth if it hit him over the head. His bias towards Ib Melchior is obvious.
Get your facts straight, mister!.......2000-05-12
Ed Shifres' book is the kind of lurid tell-all that frustrated filmmaker wanna-bes just love. Why? Because it justifies why they just can't seem to make it in tinseltown. (See: "The Rat Race" by Ed Wood, equally delicious!) Originally published as "Space Family Robinson: The True Story" -- and then re-titled "Lost in Space: The True Story" because Shifres and his co-conspiriatorial publisher wanted to "cash in" on New Line's mega-budget motion picture -- the book provides a series of shrill and largely unsubstantiated claims that Irwin Allen ripped-off the concept for "Lost in Space" from Ib Melchior (a modestly successful producer/director during the early 1960s). Unfortunately, Shifres only details Melchior's side of the story. The fact that a comic book called "Space Family Robinson" pre-existed both Melchior's AND Allen's screen treatments is barely examined. Equally suspect, is the failure of the author to mention that, minus the general premise of a "Swiss Family Robinson" in space, the television series called "Lost in Space" ultimately bore little or no resemblence to either the Melchior OR the Irwin Allen/Shimon Wincelberg treatments. (Doctor Smith and the Robot -- easily the series' most popular and identifiable characters -- are not in Melchior's treatment at all!) In any event, a case of coincidence is treated as a smoking gun. (Not very convincingly, I'm afraid.) Worse is the fact that Melchior's "revelations" come out of hiding -- not when Irwin Allen is around to defend himself -- but when New Line is producing a big-budget motion picture. Since legal threats are rampant in Mr. Shifres' book, perhaps the Irwin Allen Estate should take notice. I believe they have grounds for a libel suit.
Not only true story of Lost in Space, same with "Star Trek"!.......1999-01-25
AMAZING! The truth of another stolen intellectual property in Hollywood, and others continue;
Lostin Space was really Space Family Robinson by Ib Melchior.......1997-01-04
Edward Shifres's book is a painstakingly documented examination of one of the most egregious instances of plagiarism in the history of American entertainment. Line by line, plot point by plot point, Mr. Shifres demonstrates that the television program, LOST IN SPACE, was really SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON, created by Ib Melchior, and that Irwin Allen, who grabbed the credit and millions of dollars, was just another Hollywood hustler who knew how to make the system work for him. This is a true crime story in which the bad guy got away with it - until now.

Book Description
As early education and very early child care increase, parents and professionals face many difficult questions. What are the effects of early education on children? Are parents fulfilling their roles? What should teachers' roles be? Seldom asked are more basic questions: What are the fundamental needs of young children? Or parents? Or professionals? How can these differing sets of needs be met? Margaret Henry provides practical suggestions here for professionals and parents interested in enhancing their relationships with one another and the outcomes for young children.

A fitting tribute.......2007-01-04
Gives feeling and perspective with great logistical insights and intense battle descriptions, allowing for a respectful look at this monumental operation, one of America's last major combat operations of the war in southeast Asia. Good non fiction read.

Author, populist, and radio commentator Jim Hightower is nothing if not direct. In Thieves in High Places, Hightower lambastes the current American power structure and exhorts his readers to fight against it. Hightower's indignation runs deep in this "us versus them" exposé of corporate malfeasance, governmental abuse, the militarization of American society, and the Bush administration's empire building. In the first part of the book, Hightower illustrates how the Bush administration and Congress work with major corporations (including our nation's vast media conglomerates) to add to their obscene wealth at the expense of America's working class, our environment, and (most lamentably) our rights and liberties. "The elites have pulled off a slow-motion coup, radically wrenching America's power balance from a people's democracy to Kleptocrat Nation." Hightower defines "Kleptocrat Nation" as "a body of people ruled by thieves...a government characterized by the practice of transferring money and power from the many to the few...[and] a ruling class of moneyed elites that usurps liberty, justice, sovereignty, and other, democratic rights from the people." His catalogue of corporate greed and governmental complicity is breathtaking in scope, and though he admits that the fusion of business and government is not new, he persuasively states that "never have so few done so much for so few." Unfortunately, Hightower's serious message is delivered in such a "down home" style, it may lose its impact on the more brainy among us. Also, one wishes there were more documentation for the copious examples and facts in the book. Still, Hightower's call to action is sincere, and his descriptions of the triumphs of average people over corporate power might give some fledgling activists some hope. Thieves in High Places urges Americans to reclaim control of our government--Hightower thinks we can with community organization and grass-roots movements. However, judging from his description of the current power structure, we are going to need all the help we can get. -- Silvana Tropea

"America listens to Jim Hightower. More than eighty thousand people subscribe to The Hightower Lowdown Newsletter while his radio show is aired on more than sixty public and commercial radio stations. In Thieves in High Places, he takes on the Bushites, the Wobblycrats, and the corporate Kleptocrats, digging up behind-the-scenes dirt that the corporate media overlooks-like BushCo's ""Friday Night Massacres,"" what's happened to our food, and the Bush plan for empire. But the book also offers grassroots solutions, drawing on Hightower's Rolling Thunder Down-Home Democracy Tour, a traveling festival of rebellion against every tentacle of the corporate-politico power grab. At kitchen tables all over America, Hightower has tapped into the thriving activist networks that are our country's grassroots muscle, and his book tells their uplifting stories of retaking control of their communities. This is the real America that the rest of the world doesn't get to see. With his unique blend of wit and outrage, Jim Hightower ""lights a prairie fire""-and it's just the spark that his growing national audience craves."

Lots of Complaining, but some good points.......2007-07-28
In the first 100 Pages of this book there is nothing but complaining. Too much complaining. The second half, he actually starts giving some interesting criticism, and ways to change. The first part of the book is 2 stars the second is 4-5 stars.
We've Been Sold and Don't Even Know It.......2007-07-27
Rarely does a political book hit the shelf that is valid for more than a year or two after it is released. On very rare occasions, a political book is so well written, and so on target that it can be used for years before it becomes obsolete and this is just such a book.
The author doesn't have a bone to pick with any one particular party, but rather with the way corporations have taken over the political system and are running the country for their own gain. He attacks BushCo, the Wobblycrats and the Kleptocrats with equal zeal and exposes how we are paying the price. In addition to exposing how they are stealing us blind, he also names the names of corporations who are the biggest of the thieves.
Finally, in addition, Hightower does what few authors bother to do. He gives us solutions that are practical and can be put into everyday use. As he points out so vividly, corporations used money to steal the system, and we can use our money to take it back.
Overall, a well written book, with funny passages, that will make you think about who is running the country and how you want to spend your next paycheck. I highly recommend this book!
A Good Job Showing How Corrupt the U.S. Government Is.......2006-07-09
Tho the book does a good job showing how bad the U.S. Government is, but it also advocated overthrowing it in clever ways, like by referring to the Revolutionary War. Iit falls short in that it gives no solution as to how to make the government better in the long run, but rather how to make short term changes and is vague about how to do that as well. The main problem is that the author seems to leave out God as the best solution.
It's the Corporations Stupid.......2005-09-19
Though no one will just come out and call it what it is, Jim Hightower comes the closest to saying, "Our government is being corrupted by public corporations and these corporations must be regulated." "Thieves in High Places" is written in Hightower's humorous, down-home Texas voice, but the book is deadly serious and Hightower exposes the destructiveness of unregulated corporate greed better than anyone I have read yet. There are the usual exposés of corporate and governmental corruption, they spew one after another like soot from an SUV's exhaust pipe, bringing on anger and then rage and then a feeling of helplessness, but Hightower includes stories of everyday people who have challenged and defeated the corporations, how they did it, where they did it, and how you can join up to do it yourself. This is refreshing; it's good to know that people can-and do-still win. And then there's the humor, that essential Texasness that was endearing before our current president grabbed his carpet bag and moved to Washington (note: our president is from Connecticut, not Texas, so, historically, this metaphor is accurate).
Here's the bottom line: public corporations have only one goal-to make money. Nothing wrong with that except that corporations are not people and cannot be threatened with jail time if they transgress. Are you a noble CEO? Do you want to do right in the world? Well, if Wal-Mart tells you to close all of your American factories and move your production to the sweatshops of China, and you refuse, and your stock falls because Wal-Mart won't buy your products anymore, and your shareholders ask for your termination, so you close all of your American factories and move your production to the sweatshops of China, are you a bad person? Well yeah, but it's the system that led you to it, like the poverty that makes some poor people steal. Laws haven't stopped poor people from stealing, and laws, even if enforced, won't stop CEOs from stealing either. What we have to do is manage poverty through government programs and manage corporate theft through government regulation.
"We the People", conservatives. Our government was created before you were born, so just suck it up.
