Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, but I liked previous editions ..........2007-01-15

I have an older version of this book. I found this most recent version good because of the color pictures. The CD that comes with it is also a nice edition as it walks you through the principles presented in the book using Flash. However, the older version seems more clear in the area of writing and vocabulary. I'm not sure why you need to change an edition by making it wordier, but that seems to be the case here.

So, overall, it's a good book because of its pictures and CD. If you don't have earlier versions of the book you won't be missing anything so I'd recommend it wholeheartedly. If you do own an earlier copy and want this one as well, try to find it cheaper on another site.

5 out of 5 stars Art Fundamentals.......2006-02-27

This book was exactly what the teacher wanted and it got to me in a timely manner!! Thank you so much.

5 out of 5 stars The Standard Text Now Greatly Improved.......2005-09-14

This new tenth edition of this classic book has been expanded and changed in two significant ways.

First the CD-ROM that comes with the book has been extensively enhanced under the direction of Bonnie Mitchell of Bowling Green State University. The CD-ROM now opens with a menu of five major areas:

Elements and Principles of Art
Art Techniques
Chapter Resources, reviewing each chapter in the book.
Study Skills Primer
Internet Resources (aimed at those new to the web).

The book itself has been brought up to date with a broader array of media and represents more diverse artists than previously. New sections have been added on video art, contemporary photography, and global art. In addition the entire text has been reviewed and changed to increase the readability.

Finally the book has been integrated with the publishers Online Learning Center which has quite a bit of additional material including trial quizzes, flash cards, crossword puzzles (to assist in the vocabulary development), and a link to McGraw-Hills Art Supersite with additional more general information.

This book has long been a standard text in the field. The new edition brings it completely up to date.

Book Description

The Zuni Indians of western New Mexico have been making beautiful pottery for over a century. In this intimate and personal book fourteen contemporary Zuni potters tell us in their own words about the traditions and techniques of their craft—how they collect and handle clay, how they fire and decorate pots, and how they learn, develop, teach, and adapt their art. Some of these potters have learned in the traditional way from their mothers, but many have also taken advantage of modern mobility and education to learn at school and by visiting museum collections of pueblo pottery. Their work and their lives combine tradition and innovation.

Pottery is a traditional female art among the pueblos, but five of the potters included in this book are men. One potter uses an electric kiln at home but travels to workshops in the midwest with sheep manure so that she can demonstrate traditional firing techniques. All of them are as generous in sharing their stories in this book as they are in working cooperatively to develop their craft.

An intimate, personal look at contemporary Zuni potters who tell in their own words the traditions and techniques of their craft.

VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever 1998 is the most comprehensive single-volume film guide you can buy. It contains capsule reviews of more than 22,000 movies, written with wit and good humor; the films are rated in a range from "four bones" to "WOOF!" Each entry notes the year the film was released; its running time; its availability on videocassette, laserdisc, and DVD; its chief credits; and whether the film was made in black and white or color. Unlike many rival guides, the Retriever includes made-for-television movies, straight-to-video releases, miniseries, and television shows that are currently available on video. But that's not all: the second half of the volume is an enormous book of lists, making it a valuable film encyclopedia as well. The award index covers not only the Oscars, the BAFTA Awards, and the Cannes Film Festival winners, but also the Golden Globe, the Canadian Genie, the Independent Spirit, and the MTV Movie Awards. VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever 1998 categorizes films by their country of origin and by director, star, writer, cinematographer, and composer. If you want to find information on the World Wide Web, check out the directory of the best film Web sites. Best of all is the category index, which catalogues movies according to conventional genres ("Comedy," "Film Noir," "Romance") and also under topics as wild and diverse as "Murderous Children," "Flatulence," "Satire and Parody," "Cyberpunk," "Marriage," "L.A." and "Nuns with Guns." VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever 1998is a lively and entertaining guide that will point you toward new experiences in film and strengthen your cinematic expertise.

      Book Description

VideoHound returns this year, in its 15th edition, with nearly 1,000 new reviews, more information and more complete indexes - including VideoHound's fans' favorite category index with new, unconventional additions: Brainwashed, New Jersey, Midlife Crisis and Organ Transplants. "The 2006 VideoHound builds on its legacy of playful, yet dead-on reviews," said Jim Craddock, editor. "Insightful reviews, extensive cross-referencing and a tone that is never too serious but always right on, makes this the movie guide fans ask for by name… and size." In this year's VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever, readers can see comprehensive, clever reviews of some of last year's most popular movies such as Ray, Million Dollar Baby, Sideways and Finding Neverland. VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever offers several unique features, including 9 indexes, birth dates in all personal indexes (death dates are included when applicable) and more than 27,000 reviews. Entries are arranged alphabetically and provide: title, bone rating (Four bones to Woof!), year released, MPAA Rating, synopsis/review, songs, run time, black and white or color, format, country of origin, cast, director, writer, cinematographer, composer/lyricist, awards and made for TV, cable or video identification.

The 2006 edition offers the same reliable, friendly information to help people in their quest to find the perfect movie, solve a crossword puzzle, win a bet, or just curl up and have some quality "you" time.

4 out of 5 stars Video hound book.......2007-02-02

If this one had a separate listing of the top rated movies available, I'd give this a 5 star rating. Except for that, it's very good. I concur with all of the ratings in it; they eliminate the usual dogs and cut down the choices to the better movies on DVD or videotape.

The Extraordinary World Of Yes celebrates the stunning achievements of Yes as one of the greatest bands in the history of rock and places some important sign posts along the road towards a better understanding of the mastery behind its amazing music. The central theme in The Extraordinary World Of Yes is to address the implicit question: What makes Yes so outstanding and what is it that is truly significant about the band and its music?

One of the aims along the way is to highlight the positive and often profound messages to be found in the substantial musical output of Yes over a career that has lasted more than thirty-five years and is still flourishing. What are great Yes songs such as "Roundabout", "Yours Is No Disgrace" and "Close To The Edge" really about? How did Yes go about creating such classic music and what are the keys to appreciating and understanding it?

These questions and many more are answered in The Extraordinary World Of Yes, backed up with quotes from the members of Yes themselves in an unfolding sequence focusing on the exceptional Yes musicians, the fascinating Yes history, the remarkable Yes music and the brilliant Yes concerts.

3 out of 5 stars More ordinary than extraordinary.......2006-02-28

An okay read, but no new ground covered. Reads like a fairly well-documented listing of a fan's opinions...of which plenty may be found in various Internet locations.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Hisstory of YES.......2006-02-01

This book was fantastic. It covered the band from the very beginning up to the Magnification tour. A great deal of insight into song creation, production, and peppered with some nice tidbits on song meaning.

Definitely a recommended source for any real Yes fan.

5 out of 5 stars The Word Is YES!.......2006-01-11

There are other books written about Yes but this one exceeded my expectations. It is a logically ordered account that has some great quotes from the band members over the years. Alan Farley has given a thorough review of the extraordinary history and music of Yes. Read it to be informed.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover.......2006-01-09

Having just finished my first and last reading of this book, I must voice my disappointment. If the book had been titled My Opinions On The Works of Yes or Previously Published Interviews and Reviews of Yes Albums, I probably wouldn't have felt as if I had been ripped off by Mr. Farley and the book publishers. However, the title as it now stands really misrepresents the content. This is not a book on the individuals who make up Yes. Unlike the books I've read regarding such luminaries as Paul McCartney, Wayne Shorter, John Lennon, etc. this book could have been written by anyone of we Yes fans. One gets the idea that the members of Yes really had nothing to do with this book. I say that because it seems that any comments from the band came from previously published magazines and fanzines. The bulk of the content is simply the author's opinions about every Yes album ever made! I could have done without his opinions as I have my own already. Quite simply, this book is a boring read. I would not recommend it to anyone. Even a complete novice to Yes' music would fare better by listening to their albums and forming their own opinions.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read For Long Time Yes Fans! .......2006-01-03

I've been an avid listener of Yes music since my high school days in 1978, and finally decided to order a book convering the history of the band and insight into their music. The book is well organized and a very interesting read. I am very happy with the content, and it only has stimulated my desire to read more books on this favorite band of mine!

              Book Description

Resiliency in Native American and Immigrant Families brings a fresh and welcome perspective to the study of American minority families. The editors seek to identify and appreciate the strengths and capabilities of families from Hawaiian, Native American, Asian American, and Latino/Hispanic American cultures in an effort to share knowledge that will result in ethnically and culturally sensitive family services and treatment programs. Part I addresses theoretical issues related to multiple ethnic groups. Part II focuses on issues of resiliency in a range of life situations facing families of Native American descent. Part III is about the resilient factors specific to racial and ethnic immigrant families, including Asian Americans and Latino/Hispanic Americans. The authors these chapters explore intergenerational social support and transmission of cultural identity among Asian Americans as well as the effect of cultural beliefs and values on attitudes toward work roles and educational attainment. Other chapters apply a resiliency perspective to discussions of caregiving, coping with hardship and discrimination, and the availability of community and social support to Latino/Hispanic families. Social workers, clinical practitioners, and scholars in ethnic studies, family studies, sociology, counseling, and psychology will find this material valuable.

"Dawn's first light crested the eastern hills and gave the earth a rosy glow. Flying on such a day was pure joy. Smooth, dense, misty morning air slowly released its grip as light emerged from the countryside, fulfilling the promise of another day. Our fears vanished as we soared above the sleeping ground. We were immortal. From our perch above the commotion, we watched the world come to life to begin another day of killing."

Normally I'm turned off by the High Literary Style, but the way that passage ends with the knife-twist--"another day of killing"--redeems it with room to spare. Time and again in Schultz's book, he and his collaborator pull off that neat trick: loving memories entangled with the ordinariness of war.

(Like the time Schultz lands Janey in a vineyard that turns out to be a German minefield. He's full of morning coffee, and one of his great hopes on landing was to empty his bladder. There's nothing for it! He just has to piss his pants.)

Schultz and Janey fly and fight with the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division through North Africa, Sicily, the Anzio beachhead and the advance to Rome, and finally the invasion of southern France. They both survive--quite an accomplishment, not only for the pilot but especially for the Piper Cub. Among other tricks, they take off from an LST "aircraft carrier" whose tiny plywood deck is greatly supplemented by 24 knots of wind over the bow:

Of course I am sappy about Piper Cubs. But I really enjoyed this book, and I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for children of WW2 veterans........1999-07-10

My father was an infantry man in WW2, and never had the war seemed so real to me as when I read this book. The characters are young and sometimes cocky, brave, funny and touching. Schultz makes you see battles from a whole different perpective--the skies above the action. He takes you from beautiful contrysides to the stench of battle. All the time you realize how vulnerable he was in a plane made of wood and canvas. As he says, "You never see the one that gets you." I laughed many times and cried more, but I couldn't put it down. It woke up all my senses!

5 out of 5 stars Fast paced story of uncommon bravery........1999-01-05

Little did I realize that the plane "Janey" was featured in an exciting book. Imagine my delight when I put a picture of my Dad, Combat Photographer, S/Sgt. Bill Heller, standing beside the Piper Cub "Janey" on my website [World War II Memoirs-3rd Infantry Division]. The bravery described in the book is understated but richly deserved. I recently saw a replica of the plane "Janey" which was built by Harold Miller and his son at Leland, Illinois. One doesn't realize the fraility and size of the plane until standing next to it. "Dutch" Schultz weaves a spellbinding and fantastic story!

5 out of 5 stars Exciting WW II stories of a Artillery pilot in a Piper Cub........1998-12-08

Schultz has written of his escapades in WWII with a sense of humor and leaves the reader eager for the next chapter. A variety of experiences; flight behind enemy lines, duel with an ME 109, rescue of Italian boy with land mine wounds, and spinning with General Patton kept me awake.

When you're out under the summer sky attempting to discern Leo on the western horizon, less is more. Try to juggle an astronomy tome and a flashlight and you'll end up with more mosquito bites than star sightings. A star dial is what's needed, a lightweight paper contraption that can be manipulated to show the sky as you see it, whatever the month and time of night. Accurate for the middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, there is also a chart showing where to expect Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, month by month, through the year 2000. The stars are rated by magnitude; there's a zodiac dial identifying each zodiac constellation, showing how it appears in the sky; and most helpful of all, the stars are coated with a luminous treatment that causes them to glow in the dark, so you can see what you're looking for without ruining your night vision with bright lights. It's a superbly simple yet elegantly constructed stargazer aid. --Stephanie Gold

1 out of 5 stars Wasn't worth the postage !.......2002-02-02

I was hoping for something that offered more to look at as a teaching device. What I got was a flimsy piece of thin cardboard or pressed paper that wasn't worth the postage and handling much less its actual cost.
Unless the lights are out you can't really see the constellations and then you can't read which ones are which. With the lights on the images are so miniscule it is pointless to try and see anything on it.

4 out of 5 stars A fun way to explore the night sky........1999-01-13

This star finder is perfect for beginners and casual observers. Just take it outside, set the dial for the correct month and time and, voila! - you have a map of tonight's sky! Not only that, its stars glow in the dark, so you'll spend less time fumbling with a flashlight. I've found it easy to use for finding stars and constellations in the North, East and West. The southern horizon is on the outer edge of the dial, so it gets kind of distorted. There is also a planet finder on the back. It goes through the year 2000. I'm hoping Rand McNally will come out with an updated version soon. Overall, this is one of the most "user-friendly" ways to begin learning about the night sky.

2 out of 5 stars Good star finder on front; incorrect zodiac dial on back.......1998-08-28

The Rand McNally "Glow-in-the-Dark Star Finder with Zodiac Dial" has both good and bad features. On the positive side, the Star Finder is large and easily readable. On the negative side, it contains text that says, "...the ecliptic...is divided into twelve months," and presents a "Zodiac Dial" assigning a constellation to each month. This is wrong for two reasons: (1) The zodiacal constellations are not actually in synch with the calendar months as depicted on the Zodiac Dial. For example, according to the Zodiac Dial, the sun is in Scorpius in December. In fact, the sun is in Scorpius only for a week at the end of November. (2) The sun actually appears in 13 constellations as it moves along the ecliptic (not just the 12 that astrology is based on). The zodiacal constellation of Ophiuchus has been left out. Finally, there is a table showing where to find the planets for a period of six years. Unfortunately, the Star Finder that I looked at had a copyright date of 1995, and gave the planets' positions for 1995 to 2000. The tables for the years prior to the current year are useless. It would be good if Rand McNally would update the planet tables every year or two so that the tables would be useful for a longer time after the Star Finder is purchased. In short, if all you need is a star finder, this one will work just fine. But, pay no attention to the incorrect zodiac dial.
