Book Description

The central argument of Chromophobia is that a chromophobic impulse - a fear of corruption or contamination through color - lurks within much Western cultural and intellectual thought. This is apparent in the many and varied attempts to purge color, either by making it the property of some "foreign body" - the oriental, the feminine, the infantile, the vulgar, or the pathological - or by relegating it to the realm of the superficial, the supplementary, the inessential, or the cosmetic.

Chromophobia has been a cultural phenomenon since ancient Greek times; this book is concerned with forms of resistance to it. Writers have tended to look no further than the end of the nineteenth century. David Batchelor seeks to go beyond the limits of earlier studies, analyzing the motivations behind chromophobia and considering the work of writers and artists who have been prepared to look at color as a positive value. Exploring a wide range of imagery including Melville's "great white whale", Huxley's reflections on mescaline, and Le Corbusier's "journey to the East", Batchelor also discusses the use of color in Pop, Minimal, and more recent art.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars brilliant and brevitous.......2005-12-12

I picked up this book from a list of gotta-haves for a class on aesthetics and I gotta say this enormously eccentric work of journalism/philosophy/strange-spooky, kaleidoscopic-microscopic assorted collection (loosely connected?) on art and its psychological reception is worthy of many, many more clauses weighed down with much, much praise.

Anyone with a theoretical interest in aesthetics will find this book packed with gems begging to be peeked at.

A quirky and compelling read. And short too (+).

4 out of 5 stars one of few worthwhile books on color, not just for its cover.......2003-01-29

Fascinating and readably well-written argument that western civilization has a long-held prejudice (though not one shared by the author) against color, especially bright color.

Batchelor is highly literate and informed, plus has an impressive knowledge of contemporary art. His suggestion that color tends to be seen as frivolous/minor/feminine/or even evil is backed up with wide-ranging references to culture (contemporary and earlier), art history, lit., and more. (Including an unexpectedly timely observation that historically, evidence of the decadence of Islam included its profusion of color and pattern.)

Just a few other examples:
--the white space as sign of seriousness and quality in the modern gallery or collector's home
--the art historical ranking of disegno as superior to colore
--in French lit, the symbolic association of rich hues and precious materials with decadence
And much more.

As for me, I almost had to buy this book for its hot pink cover alone

5 out of 5 stars Color in all its problematic glory.......2002-03-05

Batchelor's own take on color theory is not only a well-researched overview of color in art, architecture, cinema, and literature; it is also a call to action of sorts for artists to reclaim color from its minimalist bastardization in art and its commercial bastardization within the market culture. Batchelor uses the terms "chromophobic" and "chromophilic" to characterize to what extent this bastardization takes place and cites examples from (mainly contemporary) art history as to where the shift from color-as-representation to color-as-color took place.

That discussions of color as secondary to drawing (or design) are neither prevelant in the industry nor in academia proves how engrained into art theory the secondary status of color is. Also of interest is the chapter on the role of semantics and color interpetation. How for example some colors in the abstract such as green-yellows are univerally more difficult to convey than others.

Every serious artist should read this book to reintroduce the importance of color to his/her concerns and to adress contemporary concerns over the loss of color by its oversaturation in less artistic settings.

        5 out of 5 stars Anecdotes & Antidotes.......2003-11-21

Reminiscences, short-short stories, and reminders of how our lives are connected to and defined by so many others. Antidotes for the blues, heart-warming memories, and laugh-out-loud tales for all occasions. Despite the southern flavor and lore, this collection is universal in its wisdom and appeal. Everyone has their favorite but "Drunk And Disorderly" has been mine ever since I first heard it on the radio. Pam's account of her dog's ill conceived pub crawl, complete with a late night phone call from the police, is still a hoot! The book is actually 159 pages, despite the listing above, but it's still small enough to fit in a Christmas stocking or gift basket. A great present for any occasion!

5 out of 5 stars Essential resource for ritualists.......2003-03-13

As a Pagan and musician, I love this book! But you certainly don't have to be Pagan to use and enjoy this extensive collection of spiritual songs -- Many faiths are included here. The book is decidedly geared toward honoring the earth, the elements, the Spirit, and the Spirit within, and is essential for anyone following an Earth religion or who wishes to recognize their spiritual connection to both the Earth and Spirit in their worship. If you organize and/or write rituals for your religious group, you should not be without Circle of Song. The book is well organized, includes notations and sheet music for every song, and even suggests dances that can go along with some songs. Whether you honor Yemaya or Yahweh, God or the Goddess, you will be delighted with this valuable collection of songs and chants.

            Book Description

This book is a series of vignettes on the importance of the siesta in paintings, literature, and sculpture. In "Preliminary," we hear of the rhythm of sleep, including the fear babies have of going to sleep. In "The Midday Demon," death in life and erotic dreams take form. The last vignette, "The Siesta Fights Back," shows how the economic necessities of Western society are conquering the siesta. This is a translation from the French of a book that reinstates the value of sleep in waking hours. From mosques, where guards sleep under the protection of Allah, to "slow-food" restaurants in Berlin in 2001, it explores the part sleep plays in human life.

This careful examination of key strategies, events, and personalities in the conflict sheds fresh light on the high points of the Vietnam experience and punctures the enduring mythologies of the war. A model of lucid writing and fair judgement. --Thomas Powers

                              4 out of 5 stars good history.......2007-04-11

A collection of essays of varying quality, but with a high 'signal to noise' ratio. Prados is a serious historian, and is fair-minded on the disputes of the Vietnam War, thus avoiding some of the ideological fights which mar the subject.

It's not a 'history' per se, but sheds some light on some of the issues.

                                  Book Description

Brigadier General George Wear once noted, "When the ARVN troops were well led they fought as well as anyone's soldiers. They simply needed commanders who would support them properly and who could win their confidence and make them believe that their cause was worth risking their lives for." General Hieu had been one of such commanders. Colonel John Hayes, 5th ARVN Division senior advisor remarked in 1970, "General Hieu is an above average commander. Good qualities include dedication, experience as a combat leader, ability to stimulate and maintain morale, and ability to control those in his command. He is quite religious and patriotic, and demands high standards of conduct and discipline. He is methodical but decisive. He is rated better than the average US Division commander in overall performance."

American Veterans who had served in Vietnam might be interested in knowing that General Hieu had collaborated closely with the following American units: USMC HMM-364, 52nd Combat Aviation Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, 173rd Airborne Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, 174th Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Battalion/50th Mechanized Infantry, 7/15th Field Artillery Battalion, 19th Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade/82nd Airborne Division, 12th Aviation Group and 3rd Squadron/17th Air Cavalry.

                                  * General Hieu was obviously a great soldier who put his country and his people foremost. (General Fred C. Weyand)

                                  * Biography of a South Vietnam general officer who has been likened to Patton, Rommel, Montgomery, and LeClerc. He was much admired by Vietnamese civilians and respected by his American advisors. (Douglas Pike)

                                  * This book sheds light on the ARVN Forces never before told. (Darryl Nelson)

                                  * I do not see how anyone studying the Vietnam War on the ARVN side can neglect your book at all. (James Miguez)

The Unexplored Connections Between Two of History’s Greatest Leaders

Ronald Reagan and Winston Churchill were true giants of the twentieth century, but somehow historians have failed to notice the many similarities between these extraordinary leaders. Until now.

In Greatness, Steven F. Hayward–who has written acclaimed studies of both Reagan and Churchill–goes beneath superficial differences to uncover the remarkable parallels between the two statesmen. In exploring these connections, Hayward shines a light on the nature of political genius and the timeless aspects of statesmanship–critical lessons in this or any age.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but not too relevant.......2007-03-16

Steven Hayward extends his research of Churchill and Reagan to look at comparisons of leadership skills, styles and effectiveness. While the comparisons are interesting, I found it difficult to see the relevance. As a specific comparative analysis, the book brings forward otherwise obscure parallels in the life and times of these two great leaders. The title is misleading in that I found no insights on "the making" of an extraordinary leader. As a book on leadership, Mr. Hayward's work gives examples of Churchill and Reagan leadership, but the work doesn't analyze the leadership examples in a way that the reader could learn leadership tips.

Overall, I found the book interesting, but not terribly relevant.

Hayward does a wonderful job in only 170 short pages of describing the similarites between Churchill and Reagan. It is a very quick read and will leave you feeling good about these two men and the accomplishments they achieved while in office.

Hayward makes this statement, "Greatness is ultimately a question of character: Good character does not change with the times: it has eternal qualities." Are there any great leaders with character today? As in the lives of Churchill and Reagan, history will tell.

4 out of 5 stars Two great leaders of a surprisingly similar mind.......2006-06-29

I found this book to be quite interesting but not at all what I had anticipated. Based on the title, I expected to see an erudite tome analyzing the lives of Ronald Reagan and Winston Churchill culminating in a discussion of how great leaders, such as these, are "made." I was, of course, being rather naïve, for if anyone knew how great leaders are produced they wouldn't be so rare in human history. What I found, instead, was a side-by-side comparison of two great men with emphasis on the parallels in their careers; the manner in which they were viewed by their contemporaries and the media in their own times; their visionary natures; the constancy of their actions; and the many connections between them which can be drawn when their characters, actions, writings, speeches, and strangely enough their educations are closely examined.

This latter point, their educations, may have come the closest to telling us how great leaders are created. Both men, it would seem, were rather poor students in their early years, but both men spent most of the remainder of their lifetimes reading and writing and, in effect, educating themselves without any presumed experts to tell them that this or that theory or manner of thinking was incorrect. In their solitude, much like Abraham Lincoln, they were left to decide for themselves what was right and what was wrong. As a consequence, neither Reagan nor Churchill ended up conforming to the conventional wisdom of his time, with the result that neither one was fully understood nor appreciated during his political lifetime.

This is an excellent book filled with little known, or at least little remembered, facts, anecdotes, quotes, and excerpts concerning two great statesmen. The comparisons are many, with surprising similarities that do both men great honor. Bottom line - This is a book well worth reading. I highly recommend it, but don't expect what the title offers but the book fails to deliver.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and thought-provoking.......2006-04-24

This is a short, fascinating, and thought-provoking read -- something that's always hard to find!

Fascinating, even eerie parallels between Churchill and Reagan: well, everyone will have his own favorites. Here are mine.

First, public speaking. They both wrote their own speeches and slaved over them. Churchill wrote on 4" x 8" paper, Reagan on 4" x 6" cards. They both practiced their speeches almost to the point of memorization, with the same result: they sounded spontaneous and convincing to their audiences. They both made speeches which changed men's minds. Carter, Johnson, and Nixon were incapable of such a thing.

Second, their marriages. Churchill's first marriage, Reagan's second -- both were Total Love Relationships, with absolute loyalty on both sides, the kind of love Walt Disney teaches us to dream about.

There are many other fascinating parallels (and non-parallels) between these two great leaders, but I'll leave them for you to discover as you read this VERY stimulating book!

I have not read this but I'm tired of theses instead of reviews. I think many potential buyers would prefer a "reviewer" such as Ms. Burke justify her unusual rating of 3.5 stars, rather then give us paragraphs of her own impressions of Churchill before an actual review of 2 positive sentences. (Please note: My stars are based strictly on a 10 minute browsing and that someone finally did a work comparing the first and last of the West's Cold War leaders -- what should have long been an obvious and great subject.)
