Watch for Amazon River Cows.......2006-12-29
This book takes its name from the full color fold-out centerfold showing an array of cows, many of which are rarely seen; some of which are extinct. Included in this dubious display of bovine beasts is the rare, but deadly, Amazon River Cow. Then there is the Skyscraper Suckerfoot and the Tennessee Portaford. Unfortunately, not all of these are all that funny, but some are entertaining.
Fortunately, the rest of the book contains some classic Far Side comics. Farmer MacDougal suddenly realizes that his collie Shep has gotten just a little too sociable for the good of Farmer MacDougal's sheep and beer. We learn what happens to young cowpokes who actually attempt to ride into the sunset. We also get to see brave archeologists discover the mummy's purse! Ever wonder what happens to Boot Hill when the gunfighters wear high heels?
On the down side, "The Complete Far Side 1980-1994" collects all these comics. Though that collection is quite expensive, it is cheaper to buy that collection than to buy all the individual Far Side collections. On the other hand, the paperback books, such as this one, are certainly easier to handle and read.
I have always enjoyed Gary Larson's Far Side cartoons. I am only sorry that he retired from the strip. Perhaps one day he will regal us again with stories of the animal and human kingdom.
Enjoy!
Funny and profound cartoons from one of the best .......2006-06-01
These cartoons are hysterical; my particular favorites are those that involve puns or wordplay. For example, on page 62 the illustration features clowns and flying pies. The caption reads, "In the corridors of Clowngress." On page 43, there is an illustration of Moray eels at a cocktail party and the caption reads, "Social morays." No topic is beyond Larson's reach. There is Mike Wallace's interview with the devil, Acts of God as a vaudeville production, the devil giving an updated weather forecast where the predicted cold front never appeared and the inside tour of the Acme Fake Vomit Company.
The best cartoonists are geniuses and Larson is one of the best. I enjoyed every cartoon in this collection; they are funny and profound at the same time.

Book Description
Poet, critic, impresario, gadfly, visionary, tastemaker: more than anyone, Guillaume Apollinaire embodies the frenzied art world of Paris in the early 20th century. His rampant enthusiasms and antipathies, and his remarkable acumen, make him still today the most evocative commentator on the intellectual ferment of the time. In 1905 he championed Picasso and in 1907 he promoted Braque in reviews that were amazingly sharp and prescient. He first identified the importance of Delaunay, Duchamp, and Rousseau, coined the word "Surrealism," and almost singlehandedly pushed Cubism into the mainstream. With a new preface by Roger Shattuck, this edition of Apollinaire on Art is the only collection in English of these seminal and ever fresh writings.

ASIN: 1567961258 |
Book Description
A charming guide to finding elegance in every aspect of life, featuring rarely seen photographs and revelations about the actress who perfected gracious living.
Propelled by popular titles such as Swell: A Girl's Guide to the Good Life and Three Black Skirts: All You Need to Survive, the decorum category touts plenty of trendy advice. But no one has demonstrated the power of poise as memorably as Audrey Hepburn, whose enchanting essence on and off the screen has easily withstood the test of time.
Inspired by a beloved icon who balanced sensibility and sex appeal, celebrity and humanitarian efforts with evident ease, How to Be Lovely examines the art of being a woman. More philosophy than biography, Hepburn fans will uncover the deeply thinking, deeply feeling woman who found success on the silver screen, in her own home and in the world at large. Through Hepburn's own words from interviews, what her friends said and behind-the-scenes stories, readers will develop a new outlook on their own careers, love lives, families, wardrobes, finances, health concerns, friendships, and the world at large.
Published to coincide with Audrey Hepburn's would be 75th birthday, How to Be Lovely features an elegant design worthy of the book's namesake. For the millions who continue to delight in Breakfast at Tiffany's, Roman Holiday, and the woman behind them all, this is the guide to living genuinely with glamour and grace.
Customer Reviews:
I just love this book!!.......2006-11-04
This is such a wonderful book and a staple for how to deal with everyday things that life brings on. Audrey Hepburn was not only beautiful...but very wise. There is so many great quotes in this book...definitely a must read!!
Where have all the LADIES gone?.......2006-05-27
If pop star Pink sings "Where oh where have all the smart people gone, where oh where could they be?"... then this book cries "Where oh where have all the LADIES gone? Where oh where could they be?" If ever there is a role model for a renaissance in being a lady (not to be confused with a bombshell)... it is Audrey. Her grace, aristocratic sophistication, refinement, depth, humanitarian spirit, and genuine posh-like glamour was real as much as it was regal. In a world of cheap bombshell images the statement: that which is least seen is most beautiful is truer than ever. Audrey was an archetype of an era where being a lady was respected and advocated.
The Ultimate Guide to Loveliness, Both Inside and Out........2006-01-11
A lot of people misuse the term "hero." Lots of people think it's an athlete, an actor, or a singer. I regard Audrey Hepburn as my hero and a great role model. She was a rare and unusually timeless beauty with her gamine looks and a gorgeous accent, often mistaken as British, that also belied part of her time in Nazi occupied Holland. With the grace of a dancer and a princess to add to her intoxicating manner of speech, she had consistently excellent taste in clothes, impeccable hairstyles, and an approach to living that more people in this world would do well to adhere to.
Hepburn isn't a hero because of her time on screen; that's just an admirable sort of glamorous display. She fought the resistance as a brave young girl with her mother during WWII, helping the allies escape to freedom. Later in her life, when her career as an actress had more or less played itself out, she took her fame and used it to help give aid to children of third world countries who were starving as she and her fellow Dutchmen had all those years earlier. She was generous, humble, uncomplicated, and beautiful beyond the physical sense. Sure, she chain smoked and was insecure, she had that one crooked tooth and insisted she had a square face, but her physical beauty came from the simple brightness inside of her that was often illuminated by those large, exotic brown eyes. Je ne sais quoi, indeed! Audrey was a woman who knew how to be the consummate woman by keeping her approach to life simple and uncomplicated, yet managing to make people place her on a pedestal of goddess-like status. That is a gift few people possess, but she was able to utilize it with seemingly little work. Melissa Hellstern's book takes several quotes by Hepburn and friends, lots of great b&w photos, and turns them into something of a positive handbook to help women, regardless of any age, learn to possess simple, optimistic, life-affirming class.

An entertaining and informative new guidebook to the creation of the musical show, filled with anecdotes, practical advice, and sparkling commentary from the biggest Broadway insiders.
Customer Reviews:
A Hugely Useful Handbook.......2003-01-26
Stephen Citron has written the bees-knees of musical theatre, in a unique, detailed yet highly entertaining and easy-to-read book. Sections are easily identified and will be a bible to composers, librettists, lyricists, directors and producers of musicals, or those wishing to enter this field.
"The musical: from the inside out" explores every step of the creation process of a musical, from the first idea to the creation to the auditions to it's closing night.
It's extremely fascinating and explores length, composition techniques, orchestration, writing a book, to the title and format and, best of all, includes real, often detailed quotes and explanations from creators such as Steven Sondheim to Hal Prince, Andrew Lloyd Webber - amongst many others.
The bible of all bibles for musical theatre workers. Well done!
Fun and Informative.......2002-02-12
An excellent text for the neophyte wishing to try his hand at the creation of a musical or for the amateur (like me) who is curious to know exactly how a musical is made. Full of quotes from famous pros and always readable. Highly recommended.
Sloppy and inaccurate throughout.......2000-04-30
Although the author has some degree of insight into the process of creating musicals, it is mostly very basic information. And apart from that, this book is so filled with factual errors as to almost completely invalidate from serious consideration as a text on musical theatre. I hate to think of the amount of misinformation that anyone who doesn't know much about musicals would come away with as a result of reading this book.
A Very Thorough Exploration.......2000-02-14
Citron's book is one to have on technique when it comes to working on creating new musical theatre. I will not work without it!

My Wife is Pregnant or the End of the World as I Know It is about: A man's wondrous harrowing journey through first time pregnancy. Sex-or lack of sex-depending on your point of view. Exhaustion, food cravings, inexplicable shopping sprees and a four-foot pregnancy pillow named Mister Fluffy. Birthing classes and the unsettling realization that school prepares us for everything except parenting. If you've had enough of the joke books and the "How-To" manuals, then My Wife is Pregnant or the End of the World as I Know It is for you. Told in a unique narrative that reads like a novel, the book offers men a candid account of an expectant father's journey. It also offers pregnant women the chance to discover what their husbands are really thinking.

Hilarity and Guidance for all future Dads.......2005-05-12
My Wife is Pregnant reads like a page-turning mystery, yet packs plenty of helpful guidance for the expectant Dad. You'll find yourself smiling or laughing out loud nearly every page. Mr. Herman tells it like it is, revealing even the most private details of his life affected by his wife's pregnancy. Forget about How To Manuals or Joke Books on pregnancy, this book makes the nine months easier, more predictable, and more understandable: not a bad foundation for the upcoming eighteen years. I couldn't put it down and my wife's not due for seven months.

Excellent.......2006-01-24
John Selby, a Sandhurst alum and Englishman, analyzes Stonewall as a military commander. He takes apart and critiques Jackson's strategy, tactics and decisions in the pivotal sites and conducts a post mortem on those decisions through the eyes of a trained military strategist. The book is totally absorbing and readable but immensely valuable as well because it features 15 maps and a plethora of pictures and drawings of battlefields and locations to provide additional perspective. If you are interested in Jackson's decision making from a battlefield standpoint then consult this book. Political and personal dynamics are not absent but not the focus of this work.
Solid Military Biography of the illustrious Confederate General.......2006-01-11
~Stonewall Jackson as Military Commander~ is candid tale of the military career of the late Confederate General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson. At First Manassas, Jackson defiantly held his ground, and led a climatic charge through Union lines. At that battle, he earned his name "Stonewall" from General Bee: "Look there is Jackson standing like a Stonewall." Jackson was a devout Christian, a West Point graduate, and a veteran of the Mexican War. He briefly taught at the Virginia Military Institute before the war began. John Selby has sketched a terse military biography of Jackson's career during the War Between the States. This book follows the legendary general from "first blood" to the campaigns in the Valley, the Seven Days campaign outside of Richmond, the Maryland campaign, Second Manassas and Fredericksburg. The book climaxes with Jackson's daring sneak attack on the western flank of Union lines at Chancellorsville. At twilight Jackson was tragically shot by his own men and died a few days later. Jackson was a brilliant strategist, and his military genius continues to be studied throughout the world. Jackson was a potent weapon, because of his dramatic flank marches and surprise attacks, he confounded the Union forces. Jackson had stung the Union forces psychologically, as Union commanders were overly cautious. Many have speculated that Jackson's death completely dashed southern hopes of victory.
John Selby astutely and succinctly captures the military genius of the late Confederate General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson with amazing clarity. Overall, this is a fairly good military biography. The strength is its brevity perhaps. Though, it neglects Jackson's role in the Mexican War, and focuses entirely on the War Between the States. If you want a more comprehensive biography of Jackson then perhaps James I. Robertson's biography is what you are looking for. I've never quite finished Robertson's book, but it is definitely the standard bearer.
Book Description
A searing portrait of a country in disarray, and of the man at its helm, from “the bravest of journalists” (The New York Times)
Hailed as “a lone voice crying out in a moral wilderness” (New Statesman), Anna Politkovskaya made her name with her fearless reporting on the war in Chechnya. Now she turns her steely gaze on the multiple threats to Russian stability, among them President Putin himself.
Putin’s Russia depicts a far-reaching state of decay. Politkovskaya describes an army in which soldiers die from malnutrition, parents must pay bribes to recover their dead sons’ bodies, and conscripts are even hired out as slaves. She exposes rampant corruption in business, government, and the judiciary, where everything from store permits to bus routes to court appointments is for sale. And she offers a scathing condemnation of the ongoing war in Chechnya, where kidnappings, extrajudicial killings, rape, and torture are begetting terrorism rather than fighting it.
Sounding an urgent alarm, Putin’s Russia is both a gripping portrayal of a country in crisis and the testament of a great and intrepid reporter.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent! True to Life..........2007-10-01
A must read for all those contemplating on working, investing, living, or visiting Russia and before more authoritarian restrictions are implemented (or should I say the "New Soviet Russia" is completed?).
Ana Politkovskaya's book is a fast read, but the truthful descriptions may be shocking to some. For me, it brought back dark memories from my years working and living there. There is so much increadible [underlined] poverty outside the major cities (e.g., Moscow, St. Petersburg, etc.) and so much more she could have continued writing about... unfortunately, because there is no real free press anymore (& as far as I know, her books have never been published or sold in Russia) the majority of Russian citizens are misinformed and uninformed.
On the other hand, Russia is a vast and beautiful country and it's people (the "real" people) amiable, warm, and very hospitable (once they get to know you). The citizens want so much more for their country, but are afraid to make concrete changes in a unified manner, may not know how to move forward due to conditioning and oppression from the old and new regimes, or are terrified of reprisals. Thus, the current leadership is dismantling Russia's constitution, eliminating the opportunity for real democracy, and is building a "New Iron Curtain" behind the old one.
Again, a must read!
Good book. Great point. But it falls a bit short........2007-09-06
The AUTHOR'S NOTE states: "... this book is not an examination of Putin's policies. I am not a political analyst. I am just a person among many, a face in the crowd, like so many.... These are my immediate reactions, jotted down in the margins of life as it is lived in Russia today."
Well, Politkovskaya doesn't all together stick with this decree, but touches upon Putin's "policies" by way of presenting his lack of policy in helping his people.
There are many events detailed in this book: soldiers being beaten and tormented by their commanding officers. Family members trying to find out the truth about their loved one's death, or murder. Corruption plaguing the Russian judicial system. Yury Budanov's kidnapping of a young Chechen girl, her rape and murder trial. Examples of friends the author has known and how their lives (good and bad) have been affected by the changes in the wake of the New Russia. The gangster life being rife throughout Russia, given in the example of Pavel Anatolievich Fedulev. The storming of the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow during the "Nord-Ost" musical by Chechen terrorists wishing to end the war, and how the government unleashed an unknown gas that ended up killing 200 hostages. The waging of "Antiterrorist Operation Whirlwind" that caused the Chechen people living in Russia to be harassed, framed, and forced to sign confessions that they plotted the attack; many were sent to prison or lost their jobs. According to Politkovskaya it was "Putin's belief that an entire people must shoulder collective responsibility for the crimes committed by a few" pg 224. The hostage situation in the town of Beslan on the day of "Lineyka," the celebration of the beginning of school when many families were at the school. 100 people went missing and the government said that they fled with the terrorists (hu?).
One can't deny that something is happening in Russia. But I can't say I was won over with Politkovskaya's argument that Putin is entirely to blame for it's current state. This is partly due to the author's writing style, which must have been affected by the translation process (there are many words and phrases that come off sounding disjointed), which make for weak arguments. The stories Politkovskaya's shares with us are stories we outsiders have heard for a number of years under the old Soviet Union. Just because one has a new government everything cannot be expected to change quickly. It takes time. It does sound like Russia has reverted to old habits either because that's all its' leader's know, or it's their intentions to align themselves with communist ways in order to gain more power for themselves. The truth is, I don't know what progress has been made under Putin, and certainly you wont find any in Politkovskaya's book. The problem is that politics usually attract power and corruption. Place people with this tendency in a government rife with corruption and things are bound to fail. Unless Russia can find someone courageous enough to stand up to it, willing to put their life on the line, I fail to see how things will ever change.
One things for sure, I'm always amazed by the resilience of the Russian people. I always get a strong sense that they love their country dearly and want nothing more than to live in a free society where the rules are fair. Hopefully one day they will have this. Unfortunately the fact that Politkovskaya died for writing stories like this shows how far Russia still has to go in acheiving freedom.

Not Afraid to Speak the Truth.......2007-08-09
Choosing journalism as an occupation in modern day Russia can result in dangerous and often deadly consequences. Anna Politkovskaya was a Russian journalist who chose such a career in spite of these potential risks. Fearless and honest, she refused to compromise her integrity as a journalist by writing nothing but the truth.
Working for one of the last liberal Moscow newspapers, "Novaya Gazeta", Politkovskaya committed herself to writing the truth about the war in Chechnya (which she openly and vehemently opposed), and the blatantly corrupt Russsian government.
In her third book, "Putin's Russia...", Politkovskaya exposes the instability of today's Russia due to the above mentioned corruption that infiltrates everything from business to politics to the military and to the court systems. Bribes are simply accepted as a way of life by bureaucrats and ordinary citizens alike. Although corruption and other forms of political and governmental "ugliness" exist in all countries, none exist to the extent witnessed in today's Russia. And for all of this Politkovskaya blames one man, Vladimir Putin (though she also places some blame on the western countries that have "bought into" the mask of democracy Putin wears during public appearances). Politkovskaya however, seeing through the guise, accurately defines Putin as a throwback from the past, as a ruthless, Soviet-style dictator.
All of Politkovskaya's "accusations" are supported by incontrovertible facts and examples. If nothing else, she was thorough in her research. She had no hidden agenda or score to settle in writing this or any of her books - she merely wanted to truth to be told.
Sadly, for telling the truth Anna Politkovskaya paid the ultimate price. On a Saturday afternoon in October 2006 she was shot twice in the head in the elevator of her apartment building while returning from grocery shopping. The shooting was, without a doubt, a contract killing and was probably approved, if not ordered, by Putin himself.
Though disturbing and sometimes difficult to stomach (as the truth often is), this book is a must read for all Russophiles and/or those just interested in the truth about modern day Russia. In addition, I highly recommend her three other books as well - "A Dirty War: A Russian Reporter in Chechnya", "A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya" (neither of which were ever allowed to be published in Russia), and "A Russian Diary: A Journalist's Final Account of Life, Corruption, and Death in Putin's Russia".

A modern Solshenitzyn.......2007-08-09
The book is listing case after case of atrocities of the russian army in Chechnia and the governments cover ups. The book displays systematic abuse of power and documents, that Russia is not a de facto democracy. This is tough reading and seamingly good journalism too. We cannot verify the reliability of the sources.
In the long run, the monotone listing of cases renders a numbness to the situation. But it is with out doubt interesting and a must read.
