Making Marks: Discovering the Ceramic Surface
ASIN: 0802838707 |
Book Description
This lovely book presents essays and recent works in porcelain by Brother Thomas Bezanson, praised as "one of the greatest artists in the Western pottery world" by well-known Japanese ceramicist Tatsuzo Shimaoka. Brother Thomas explores his faith and the process of creation side by side with illustrations of the celebrated porcelain vases, plates, and tea bowls that are his life's work. The book also contains a nineteen-page photo essay on Brother Thomas at work in his studio by Bill Aron of Los Angeles, an introduction by Joan Chittister, and an illustrated index of the works of Brother Thomas now held in more than fifty museum collections around the world.
Customer Reviews:
Brother Thomas' "Creation Out of Clay".......2007-02-08
Brother Thomas' is a beautiful work of inspiration. While he makes pots, he also writes of his philosophy, partly based in his faith, partly based in his talents for creation. His works are subtle, masterful, and demonstrate a love of clay. Lavishly illustrated, this work has been an inspiration for me. I find myself reaching for my sketchbook and pencil as I am turning the pages.
This is not so much a "technique" book as it is a "this is how I make pots." But, it's a wonderful source of inspiration and ideas. I recommend this one to everyone who is in any way interested in the art and craft of pottery.
a beautiful book.......2001-03-23
Brother Thomas Bezanson ,originally from Nova Scotia, is one of the great potters working in cermaics today. His work is notable in its use of color, resembling texture and color used in both China and Japan. He works in porcelin, and now lives and works in Erie, Pa.,not a noted hotbed of the arts. He was formely assocaited with the celebrated Monks of Weston Priory in Vermont. His work is easily accesible, and is on display in the Boston museum, among other places. This book, with its luxurious photos show the depth of the color that Brother Thomas achieves, the deep blends that have become his signature .Tea bowls, plates, vases all are lovingly illustated in beautiful full 4 color photographs. In this volume,he shows his deep indebtedness to the japanese and chinese artist who have preceeded him. Also his story is told along with his progress as an artist, and one can see, as a man. This is a beautiful book, lavishly illustarted which tells Br Thomas history along with the history of the pieces. Excellent, worth the cost and effort.
Creation Out of Clay.......2000-02-12
I found this book very enjoyable and uplifting. The writings of Brother Thomas and the photographs of his art work are exceptional. This is a book I recommend to any artist or anyone who enjoys man at his creative best.

Book Description
Now fully and extensively revised, updated, and expanded, this well-written, legalese-free guide provides filmmakers with essential advice on almost every conceivable rights issue they might encounter: from the initial acquisition of material through the rights situations that arise in preproduction, production, postproduction, and final release. Armed with this book, filmmakers can protect themselves and their work from disastrous legal actions and save thousands of dollars in legal fees. CLEARANCE AND COPYRIGHT, the first book devoted to the clearance and copyright issues that affect the film and video community, is a must read for all filmmakers - producers, directors, screenwriters - whether they make features, shorts, documentaries, or music videos.
Customer Reviews:
Invaluable resource for film makers.......2007-06-29
This book gets constant use in my library. As a documentary film maker and owner of a production company, Donaldson's sound advice gives us security knowing that we have completed the proper steps to secure our rights and the rights for "borrowed" film clips used within our documentaries.
It is written in clear everyday language so no need to fear the legal-ease. Clearance and Copyright is an invaluable resource for production companies and film makers alike.
clear language and discussion - may have some factual errors.......2004-11-09
Clearance and Copyright is a clear language guide to copyright issues as they affect filmmakers and to how to clear copyrighted work so that you can use them in your film. It has sections on clearing the script, any music that can be heard in you film, clips from other movies, sculptures etc which may appear in the background and just about any issue that could come up. At the end of each section Donaldson includes sample contracts which might be used to clear that particular item.
Overall this was a good introduction to copyright and how to clear copyrighted materials for independent filmakers. It was easy to understand, practical and helpfull. ..except for the glaring error that I noticed and presumably others that I didn't:
I read the 2nd edition released in 2003. In a discussion on what is in the public domain (in my book this was on page 46) Donaldson states, "Very old works for which the copyright has expired are in the public domain. How old? Take the current year and subtract 75." I am certain that this is false. In 1998 the Sony Bono Copyright Extension Act leangthened all copyrights by 20 years. So really work made before 1998-75 years (1923) are in public domain until 2018 at which point works made 95 years before the current year will be in public domain. I am not an expert on copyright law and I noticed this error which makes me wonder what errors I didn't notice. I am assuming that this error is a throwover from the first edition that nobody caught. That doesn't keep Disney from sueing you if you rerelease Mickey Mouse's Steamboat Willie (published in 1928 and so according to Donaldson free for the taking today in 2004).
I don't recommend this book, only because of the glaring inaccuracy that I found. If you have to double check information then you are wasting your time. What this book is good for is a clear language book to get you thinking about the issues. You will be thinking about the issues, but you may also be mislead about the details. And as Copyright and Clearance makes clear you need to be very picky with clearance issues.
Must Have for Indy Filmmakers.......2004-02-11
If you are serious about making films and in particular documentaries, this is a great book and valuable resource. I can't count the number of times I've consulted it.
It clears up a great deal of the myths surrounding 'fair use' and 'pubic domain'. Many filmmakers wrongly consider a wide variety of things as 'fair use' or 'public domain' and would be well advised to read this book before rolling a frame of film or video on anything bigger than a home movie.
It covers privacy rights, music rights (yes, you must pay/clear ALL music that you use except under the most rarest of circumstances. Even a couple of notes from a popular song could result in an expensive injunction against your film.), clearances and issues related to copyright.
The 20 buck you'll spend on this book will save you thousands in legal fees down the road when it comes time to actually show your film outside of your house, be it a film festival, TV distribution, or theatrically. The mistakes you avoid could well mean the difference between acquiring E&O insurance and having your film sit on the shelf due to clearance problems.
The writing is simple and straight forward and is an easy read for those who might shy away from books on legal issues. While not as in-depth as a Westlaw book or other scholarly legal tome, it provides relevant citations to important cases. It assumes the reader is intelligent but not trained in law.

The Trouser Press Guide to 90's Rock (Trouser Press Record Guide)
ASIN: 0679755748
Release Date: 1995-10-10 |
Amazon.com
A guide to the world of alternative music in all its variety and weirdness, from the earliest influences to the latest bands. Provides in-depth and informative record reviews and discussions of such phenomena as the New Zealand sound, alternative hip-hop, and the secret history of women in punk. The book also includes a sure-to-be controversial listing of what they consider to be the top 100 alternative albums of all time, and top-ten lists from such artists as Joey Ramone and Kurt Bloch. Despite some questionable additions (Cindi Lauper?) and glaring omissions (where is Game Theory?), it remains an indispensable guide.
Book Description
America's premiere alternative music magazine presents a book of outrageously opinionated reviews of the essential albums of punk, new wave, indie rock, grunge, and rap. National ads/media.
Customer Reviews:
Quite good actually.......2006-10-19
Ok this came out a while ago. Ok it is incomplete but at least teh reviews are quite complete and tend to be well written. It actually speaks well for the magazine that was not that good that they could provide such a tome as this. OK some bands have been omitted but the overall quuality of the writing allows you to get a good idea of alternative music 10 years ago.
a *great* resource; needs a new edition.......2001-11-27
This book is a wonderful guide to bands and artists deemed "alternative" by the editors of Spin magazine--The book's forward provides the best definition I've read/heard of the alternative genre, and it includes such diverse acts as Abba and Kronos Quartet. My high school library had a copy of it, and I think I had it checked out for the majority of my four years there. The library at my college doesn't have it, and I've considered buying it, but it's already become pretty dated since its publication in 1995. There is no mention of Tricky, Portishead, or Radiohead; Debut is the only one of Bjork's solo albums in the book; they even say something like "What will Natalie Merchant be doing now that 10,000 Maniacs have broken up?" It's a wonderful authority on musicians like Neil Young and David Bowie, whose discographies can be intimidating to a relative young 'un like me. There's also a great piece on PJ Harvey, whom I will consider underrated until there are VH1 tribute concerts in her honor. Anyway, if you're interested, check out the Northfield High School library.
Spin Alternative Record Guide.......2000-12-29
Probably the best and quickest way to become a record trainspotter. brilliant book only let down by its (massive) american bias: singles going steady by the buzzcocks at number 17 in its top 100 albums of all time is the hirest ranked british record and the sex pistols are at number 100 - will this bitter jealousy ever end?
Good Resource of Obscure Material.......2000-12-23
I found the book to be informative in listing a majority of artists and bands whose songs you will never hear on "commercial" radio. These include the Modern Lovers, Pere Ubu, Replacements, the Shaggs, and much much more. Without this book, I would not have known about them.
One thing I found unnecessary was that the book included AC/DC, ABBA, Cheap Trick, Black Sabbath and the Police; They were hardly alternative in my view. In spite of that, a majority of obscure bands grace the pages of the book, so it's not a total disappointment.
Despite most of the critics' snootiness and know-it-all style of writing, some lists songs as they critique the albums of the bands. The listing of the songs was really helpful and allowed me to listen to each band's unique musical style. After all, you are your own critic.
If you can bypass the faux literal pretensions of the critics, you will find the book to be a good guide to "alternative"/non-commercial music.
Well..........2000-12-09
Well I WAS going to give this book a really good chance, but after reading what they said about Weezer in the Kiss reviews I just threw the damn thing in the fireplace.

Customer Reviews:
HOLY YIKES, CAPTAIN!.......2002-10-01
Mike Hertenstein is the KING OF NEGATIVITY! If one were to tell him that the glass was half empty-he would loudly declare that the glass was COMPLETLY EMPTY! Does every corner have to be dark? Does everything have to make perfect sense. Its a series. Its entertainment. Its not real life. Calm down.
Enlightening.......2002-03-23
I loved this book all the way through. Hertenstein brought up a lot of questions in this book, and when he answered them, he answered them from a Christian point of view. I, too, am a Christian, though my views differ a good deal from those of Mister Hertenstein. Nonetheless, I didn't think his views were at all pushy or preachy as some writers can get. Rather, he offered his view and left the reader to discern his own. And I came away from the book with more than a few insights---not from any conclusions he'd drawn, but rather from the questions brought up. I do so enjoy the Trek books focusing on science, especially the works of Mr. Krauss, but it's also nice to have one from a religious point of view. I do not think the two are mutually exclusive. In any case, don't pick up this book expecting to agree with everything (or even most of) what the author writes, but be prepared to have your mind opened by the material. It is a thinking person's book.
Trek as a way of life? Read this book first.......1999-10-31
Hertenstein's examination of the Star Trek "philosophy" and its internal contradictions is vastly entertaining and informative. You don't have to be a Christian (as Hertenstein is, and I am) to notice a certain discontinuity between IDIC and resisting the Borg.
Make no mistake--my own worldview owes a lot to Star Trek, and the crew of the Enterprise helped give me my fascination for things technical. But a consistent, grand vision of the universe it isn't, Roddenberry's grandiose dreams not withstanding. (Read Solow and Justman's book if you don't believe me.)
Philosophy for non-philosophers.......1999-08-19
Thoughtful reading for sci-fi fans. As a pick and choose Star Trek spectator, (I prefer TNG) I found it a great oops-it's-one-thirty-in-the-morning read. It may be a bit deep for some, and downright offensive to the religious intolerant and those who worship Roddenberry and his philosophies, but a view I've never seen before of the Trek Universe.
Half-humans? More like half-baked ..........1999-04-18
Though it's not marketed as such, this book comes across as a Christian counter-rant to some of Roddenberry's humanist ravings while neglecting its ostensible subject - Star Trek. The philosophical arguments often develop with promise but eventually end up shallow and unsatisfying. Title and other reference errors are rampant and distracting (actress Jane *Wyatt* played Spock's mother, not Jane *Wyman*), and a few episodes are whipped to death while neglecting the lion's share of Trek material. Though a few points are provocative the first time one reads them, by the third or fourth pass the luster has gone and as a result the book is about a hundred pages too heavy. It could have used a good editor to tighten it up, preferably someone familiar with the material. (Surprisingly, Phil Farrand - Trek nitpicker supreme - has a blurb on the back. Must have been a bad day when he reviewed it to let some of the screamers through!) The wearisome tirade about some "anti-religious bias" the author invents could be quickly dissolved with a few episodic references the author neglected either from carelessness or perhaps desperation to grind an axe. That struck me - as a long time Star Trekker who "finds the One, quite sufficient"
- as a disappointing shame.
Anyway, what starts out as a promising effort soon peters out into tepid Christian apologetics and inexplicable reviews of CS Lewis. If you've read other meta-Trek books you've seen the highlights before - save your money for Krauss' work, or the cast biographies instead.

Customer Reviews:
what are the causes and effects?.......2006-06-01
The book is a collection of papers analysing the problem of homeless children in the US. Topics include looking at public shelters for mothers and children in Atlanta, and how homelessness can impact the mental development and schooling of children. One prominent cause of homelessness cited is the high cost of rental housing in a city or suburb. Keep in mind that the book was written in 1990. In real terms, for a large American city, housing costs might well have risen considerably since then. Exacerbated by a lack of sufficient well-paying jobs in some localities.
One chapter goes outside the US. It compares the situations in Bogota and Guatemala City. In both cases, the poverty is far more dire than in the US.
Book Description
Here is an unprecendented collection of the unique art that graced military aircraft in World War II and the Korean War. Applied by amateurs or professional artists like Vargas and Brinkman, the art typically featured alluring women whose charms belied the deadly cargo the crew hoped to deliver to its targets. Hundreds of examples are shown in a combination of archival photos from the wars and current photos of artwork in museum collections. Fully captioned with aircraft type and unit assignment.
Customer Reviews:
Made the perfect gift for a history buff........2007-09-12
This book gave great photos of airplane pin-up girls, would recommend for any historic airplane buff.
Loved this book.......2007-07-20
Great buy...this is the only book I have found that includes Ice Cold Katy in it....very hard nose art to find...buy it, you will love it.
Nice book.......2006-08-24
Great pictures here, a pitty that the most of them are in B/W but in general they're great.
This book is very similar to "Aircraft Nose Art: From World War I to Today (Motorbooks Classics) by Jeffrey Ethell" that in fact is better, but the couple would be the perfect buying!
:D
Vintage Aircraft Nose Art.......2005-08-31
Excelent monarge of vintage photos of aircraft & crews with jackets displaying art of the times. Full color photos.
One great book.......2003-08-21
I have always had a great interest in WWII bombers and fighters. In addition to this my, step-uncle was a 1st Lt. Co-pilot on a B-17 stationed in Deenethorpe, England and flew 30 missions between 6/44 & 11/44 in the 615th B.S. of the 401stBG (H). I purchased this book after reading the good reviews it had. I was very impressed with the book. There are B&W pictures of nose art on B-17's, B-24's, B-29's, B-26's, B-25's, A-26's, P-51's, C-47's, C-87's, P-38's, P-47's, P-61's. There are also some color pictures and also there are some pictures of the back of a few flight jackets. The pictures are 99% bombers. This is a picture book with info below the pictures if available.

Book Description
One of the most fascinating features of classic warbirds is the colourful art that often adorned their noses and cowlings. Usually improvised by crews and pilots during their downtime, such imagery reflected their personalities, temperaments, and frames of mind. Each month, an image depicting the art on a well-known restored fighter or bomber is featured.

Book Description
The author of the best-selling Terror and Liberalism on the rise to power of the generation of 1968.
The student uprisings of 1968 erupted not only in America but also across Europe, expressing a distinct generational attitude about politics, the corrupt nature of democratic capitalism, and the evil of military interventions. Yet, thirty-five years later, many in that radical generation had come into conventional positions of power: among them Bill Clinton (who reportedly stayed up all night reading this book) and Joschka Fischer, foreign minister of Germany. During a 1970s street protest, Fischer was photographed beating a cop to the ground; during the 1990s, he was supporting Clinton in a NATO-led military intervention in the Balkans.
Here Paul Berman, "one of America's best exponents of recent intellectual history" (The Economist), masterfully traces the intellectual and moral evolution of an impassioned generationand gives an acute analysis of what it means to go to war in the name of democracy and human rights.
Customer Reviews:
Who were the generation of '68? .......2006-12-06
In Berman's lucid and wonderfully written account, they were people who were animated by the burning question: Would they have been collaborators or resisters in Nazi Germany and Occupied Europe? They were a generation for whom the question of totalitarianism (be it the totalitarianism that "had survived Nazism" in Western society or the totalitarianism that threatened to murder the Vietnamese Boat People) was a real issue; an issue of foreign policy. A Big Issue, rather than a rhetorical gesture to show that our cause is just. It is not an accident that Jimmy Carter (influenced by the 68ers) established the office of the Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights; that Jimmy Carter "sent the Sixth Fleet into action scooping up the [Vietnamese] Boat People" (who were called such because a `68er who founded Doctors without Borders, Bernard Kouchner, rented a Boat for Vietnam to rescue the Vietnamese who were fleeing the Communists. Nor is it an accident that this same Kouchner became, under Mitterand, France's secretary of State for Humanitarian Action. A title that allowed him to send "humanitarian actions under the tricolor of France" into Africa.
For this generation then, the question of Yugoslavia, was not a question of real politik, not a sideline question but a question of central importance. And it is not an accident that this generation (of people who were leaders of the world by then) united (finally and too late some might say but united) and chose to intervene in Yugoslavia on humanitarian grounds. Because "everyone had the right to D-Day".
But it was also this generation that, by and large, failed to ask the right questions about Iraq. For no matter how one feels about the Iraq war (and Berman points out some of the more lucid arguments for and against military intervention in Iraq) it is hard to deny that the generation of '68 did not make the humanitarian argument for war against Saddam as it had done for war against Milosevic. It was this generation that kept silent while the "bad US government" went to war for the wrong reasons (with disastrous results for this generation and perhaps the world).
It is a generation not without its flaws then; a genuinely human generation. And this is the beautifully-written story about who they were and are and what, in the end, it was all about.
I strongly recommend this book.
The Maturation of a Generation of Naive Idealists........2006-03-23
Paul Berman is an unusually fair minded observer of the world political scene. That allows him to do justice both to the idealism of the generation that made the 1968 student "revolutions" and its failings. He charts the development of 1968 street fighter Joschka Fischer to becoming the first Green to be a Minister in the German government. Fischer endorsed NATO's intervention in Kosovo against all his earlier principles. Yet he refused to endorse the intervention in Iraq.
Dr.Bernard Kouchner, founder of Doctors Without Borders and another of the '68 radicals, did approve the Iraq intervention, although not how it was carried out. Why did they differ?
Berman tells us about many of the characters of the generation of '68, with the whole history of those times and subsequent developments converging on the Iraq question. I wish Fischer's warning that Iraq was a terrorist trap for America had received more consideration from the author.
For all those who were young in '68 this book is a must-read. And for other generations too it is highly instructive. Warm, witty and with plenty of narrative, it's compulsive reading whether you agree with its implications or not.
Excellent intellectual history; par for course for Berman.......2005-11-10
Paul Berman has written two interesting books in recent years. The first was the excellent TERROR AND LIBERALISM which looked at jihadic violence, its underpinnings in Islamic and Western philosophy and history, and the possibility of a humane, hawkish, antitotalitarian, liberal response to it. POWER AND THE IDEALISTS is an equally engrossing read that looks at the generation of 1968 (anti-Vietnam, anti-authority, anti-capitalist, very often anti-American protesters) and their evolution over time, especially in reaction to Entebbe, Kosovo, and 9/11. Suprisingly, many 1968ers evolved quite far. The emphasis here is on Germany, as the central figure under consideration is former German foreign minister and Green leader Joshka Fischer. This is an excellent, journalistic account of many arguments very pressing in today's political environment. All arguments are treated fairly and in more than just a single dimension.
An interesting book about the idealism of the Left.......2005-09-18
This book is about idealists on the political Left, with a focus on Germany's Joschka Fischer. In the first chapter, Berman shows that the late 1970s brought home to many people just what the New Left had become: it had supported what became genocide in Cambodia and (roughly speaking) National Socialist policies by Arabs in the Levant. These were exactly the policies the Left had opposed so strongly in the 1930s and 1940s.
Of course, in the case of Zionism, the Left had switched sides in the past, supporting it in the early part of the twentieth century, opposing it in the 1920s and 1930s, supporting it in the 1940s, and opposing it once again in the 1950s and 1960s. But that's not the point. The Left had generally been against right-wing irredentism, racism, and genocide in the past. And some of it clearly went over to it in the 1970s.
In the next chapter, the author discusses some of the ideas of the European Left that "crossed the ocean," such as the Kyoto Protocols and the International Criminal Court. During the Clinton administration, Berman explains that there was an appearance of cooperation between the United States and Europe on these issues. But that fell apart in the present Bush administration. Next, Berman discusses a little about the American Left and the Muslim world. Do those who plead for human rights in the Muslim world get support from American Left? Not all that much.
We also discover how much support such rights get in Europe, and in France. How many on the Left in France preferred an American victory over Saddam Hussein to an American defeat?
Berman indicates that the ideas of the "generation of 1968," which opposed the Vietnam war and intended to be activists in supporting human rights are not those of this generation. The activists of 1968 wanted to be interventionists. They wanted to oppose oppression. But the ideas of today, on both the Left and Right, are a little different.
I think this is a fascinating book, and I recommend it.

Book Description
Regional/Nature
A handsomely illustrated account, now in paperback for the first time.
Florence Page Jaques and her husband, Francis Lee Jaques, who illustrates this classic with beautiful black-and-white nature drawings, experience an unusually thrilling winter vacation following the waterfowl migration. Beginning with a duck-hunting trip in Minnesota, Florence writes a lively and detailed account of their trip down the Mississippi flyway, through the White River bottom swamps in Arkansas, and around the Rainey Wildlife Sanctuary in the marshlands of Louisiana.
"Mrs. Jaques' text, like her observation, is artless and fresh. She observes in an instant, never coolly, and with like spontaneity sets both her observation and her reaction to it." Saturday Review
"It is a hearty, outdoors book, full of wind and sky color, full of feeling for things and places." New York Herald Tribune
A poet and nature writer, Florence Page Jaques (1890-1972) collaborated with her husband on eight books, including Canoe Country and Snowshoe Country, reissued by the University of Minnesota Press in 1999.
Francis Lee Jaques (1887-1969) spent his childhood in Aitkin, Minnesota. His art is world renowned, with major collections housed in the American Museum of Natural History and the James Ford Bell Museum of Natural History in Minneapolis.
