Book Description
"Art" has always been contested terrain, whether the object in question is a medieval tapestry or Duchamp's Fountain. But questions about the categories of "art" and "art history" acquired increased urgency during the 1970s, when new developments in critical theory and other intellectual projects dramatically transformed the discipline. The first edition of Critical Terms for Art History both mapped and contributed to those transformations, offering a spirited reassessment of the field's methods and terminology.
Art history as a field has kept pace with debates over globalization and other social and political issues in recent years, making a second edition of this book not just timely, but crucial. Like its predecessor, this new edition consists of essays that cover a wide variety of "loaded" terms in the history of art, from sign to meaning, ritual to commodity. Each essay explains and comments on a single term, discussing the issues the term raises and putting the term into practice as an interpretive framework for a specific work of art. For example, Richard Shiff discusses "Originality" in Vija Celmins's To Fix the Image in Memory, a work made of eleven pairs of stones, each consisting of one "original" stone and one painted bronze replica.
In addition to the twenty-two original essays, this edition includes nine new ones—performance, style, memory/monument, body, beauty, ugliness, identity, visual culture/visual studies, and social history of art—as well as new introductory material. All help expand the book's scope while retaining its central goal of stimulating discussion of theoretical issues in art history and making that discussion accessible to both beginning students and senior scholars.

where art history and philosophy intersect,.......2007-07-18
you will find books such as this one. A Ph.D. is not required to understand it, but it will give you an intellectual workout, as it is not a beginner's handbook. You need to have read some art history (beyond the "what, where, when, who" level), and some art criticism, to see the rationale behind its chapter headings. It is also not a book about works of art as such, but about the special terms and concepts used in current interpretive writing on the "fine" arts (primarily arts of Western European derivation, but the contributors are sensitive in handling the cultural bias of their sources). ALL of the authors are distinguished authorities on the topics they discuss. I think it is a strength of this book that they do not share a homogeneous intellectual background, or ideological bias, and also that they are not all the same age, but made their greatest contributions at different points in the recent (roughly, between 1970 and 1990) "crisis" of art historical writing. The most useful feature of this book, to my mind, is that it provides carefully argued contextual analysis of critical terms which either 1) have a long history of use (and therefore need unpacking before we can grasp the "unconscious"--sometimes contradictory--values they impose on the works to which they're applied), or 2) have been recently introduced to enable an informed critique of traditional art history. The cumulative effect of the various essays is to demistify some of our more cherished assumptions about the value of art: its timeless messages, its inspired origins, its spiritual uplift, its higher expressiveness/beauty/perfections. In other words, if you hope for a "feel-good" treatment of art critical standards, this is not your book. And yet, if you can accept that making and using works of art are social activities, and like the other products and customs of human societies, are constantly in flux even as they depend for their existence on inherited techniques, formulas, and ideals, then this book will provide a wonderful "relief map" of the intellectual foundations of current art history/art criticism.
Learning the rules of the game.......2003-07-23
Most of these essays are written by extremely prominent art historians and critics, such as WJT Mitchell, Homi Bhaba, the late Michael Camille, Jas' Elsner, and Nina Kallmyer. Each writer explores a "charged" term currently used in art criticism, such as "representation," "social art history," "ugliness," and "beauty." In each essay, the writer explores the meaning of the term by applying it to a single work of art. Though the essays vary in difficulty, each is ultimately very rewarding. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of art criticism. An absolute must for journalists, art critics, and students.
Beginners Beware.......2002-11-04
This book does present scholarship that uses and (sometimes) defines a variety of themes and approaches to art criticism, but most of the writings are highly esoteric, randomly selected, and not always focused on the visual arts. If you don't already have a solid understanding of concepts like "Post Modernism" and "Commodity" don't expect any clear answers here. This is less of an explanatory textbook-type work, and more of a compilation of modern critical writing. Pre-requisite: PhD.
Good book for exploring criticism topics.......2000-09-25
If you interested in reading about particular themes in contemporary art. This book covers a whole slew of art crit terms.
Each individual term is explored by its own essay. Each essay is written by a different author (mostly in the 80s and 90s). These essays are around 14 pages long, so these terms are explored rather in depth. The writing is so thick in this book it takes a good chainsaw to hack through 'em. But the effort is well worth it.
Here's the terms explored: Representation, Sign, Simulacrum, Word and Image, Narrative, Context, Meaning/Interpretation, Originality, Appropriation, Art History, Modernism, Avant-Garde, Primitive, Ritual, Fetish, Gaze, Gender, Modes of Production, Commodity, Collecting/Museums, Value, Postmodernism/Postcolonialism, and Figuration
My favorite essay so far is the one on Simulacrum.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in art criticism. It provides some interesing viewpoints.

Up To The Challenge.......2005-08-06
"The Blood of wolves flowed through ten generations of Wolfrider Chiefs and their Tribefolk...It tied them beyond all untying to the world and it's cycle of life. And if the price was mortality then no one knew it, for rare indeed was the Wolfrider who died peacefully of old age." Once again, the Pini's proved that Cutter was the exception to that rule! The Son Ten Chiefs carried his tribe into a future they were never meant to see, in the name of love. Elf Quest is a classic story, well told and immensly inspiring, proving noone is truly bound to a single fate. I hope Elf Quest will never really go away. I hope Cutter and the Wolfriders will continue and beat the odds and carry us along with them on their incredible journey!
It was great :).......2000-10-16
I love it when the characters, plot and storyline all flow as nicely as this one did. Great Job!!!!
Wendy Pini does it again.......2000-09-03
Yet another masterpiece by Wendy Pini. I had only just finished "Forevergreen" (I constantly read them out of order), and to see the crisp, smooth drawings was like a breath of fresh air. This is in no way an insult to Barry Blair, or any other Elfquest artist; I merely mean that Wendy knows best what her elves look like, and captures the essense of each personality. The artwork looks three-dimensional, so that it seems to have a depth that some of the other Reader's Collections lack. I look at each page, marveling "That's how Shenshen and Cutter look like!"
Dreamtime's story wasn't skimped on, either. The dreams add new insights and facets to each Wolfriders' personality, and were told in an inventive way. In favorites, i'm torn between Pike's story and "Dreamtime - Pt?" I don't want to give too much of the story away, though, so I won't tell you too much about it: Just that it's terrific!
It was very imaginative and fancifull........1999-06-03
I thought that it was a wonderful story full of our favorite characters. It was one of the best of the elfquest books that I've read in a while.
The best art!.......1999-04-21
The plot of this story was great! The art was great! It was Wendy's best work!!!!!!!! Buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Book Description
We?re entering a new era. Mini-DV filmmaking is the new folk, the new punk rock, the new medium where anyone can tell his story. "$30 Film School" is an alternative to spending four years and a hundred thousand dollars to learn the trade. It is influenced by punk rock?s Do-It-Yourself spirit of just learning the basics and then jumping up on a stage and making a point, and by the American work ethic back when it was pure, before it became all about corporations crushing the little guy. Throw in the hacker idea that information wants to be free (or at least very cheap) and you?ve got our deal. Inside you?ll find many interviews from insightful independent filmmakers and artists, as well as a host of practical advice, knowledge, and resources.

more than just a film book.......2007-02-24
I got this for my boyfriend, he's starting out in filmmaking. He's upset because I keep borrowing it from him to read, even though I'm not a filmmaker. This is an amazing book, with lots of advice on dealing with people and living life....FAR more than just a book on making video. there's even stuff on computer use that helped me with writing...but mainly, it's a GUIDE FOR LIVING, somehow hidden inside a flimmaking book.
Read it. Buy it. Share it. And if you're not a filmmaker, I'd recommend starting with the last chapter. "Closing Arguments."

Exspected much more! .......2007-02-20
I bough this book and though that it will be much exiting then it was. It was nothing special for me. This book is written by not professional film maker he is not seemed to be very successful. He didn't even finished the film school and makes ugly films. I didn't like them at all. This man has no talent. How can you learn from such a person?
Buy This Book!!!.......2006-11-16
$30 Film School is an absolute jewel of a book to have in your possession , as is covers every aspect of filmmaking from conception to distribution in a writing style that that is as straight forward and plebian as it is witty and concise. Michael Dean takes an approach to instructional writing that makes it seem like you are in the same room with him having a conversation. I read it straight through the first day I bought it out of sheer enjoyment and I have been referring to it on various projects ever since. Every question I have had about filmmaking has been answered and utilized in this book. I have used Dean's sage advice to attain fiscal sponsorship, to totally master my camera, to find cheap and professional ways around lighting and sound.
As I have read all of the reviews posted here, let me just state, if anyone has an issue spending 30$ on this book, they are not reading it the way it was intended. There are no quick fixes in like and you could read a whole library of books and never achieve what you want to. You have to get off your behind and do it. That is what Michael Dean is saying. If your intent is to become Michael Bey, I guess you should save your money. This is not a how to guide to becoming a Hollywood Mogul. If your intent is to figure out a feasible way to do what you love, to make art, this book will show you the way. I own at least twenty different books on the subject. THIS ONE IS THE BEST!
Wow..........2006-11-06
I bought this book...for...30 dollars and now i want it back! Dean really isnt that great of a writer...
Not to mention the simple fact that if Hollywood never excisted we wouldnt like films...I dont understand why everything has to be so Hollywood Bashing these days. Dean is a prime example of one of these types, if he wasnt lauding himself for his "DIY" tactics he was talking about about how "Punk Rock" he is or even "Those Hollywood rats...". i honestly think that Hollywood rejected him...so now he vents his anger through the book.
Sad.
i'll never get those minutes back..........2006-10-15
and not to waste too many more minutes on it, suffice to say this book left me unimpressed; poorly written and poorly executed. there was nothing of value in this book to me. do not waste your money.

Book Description
Dad's Army is quite simply the most successful British TV sitcom of all time. Eighty episodes were made and are constantly repeated. The first black-and-white series, re-shown for the first time in 1999, attracted 4.6 million viewers, outperforming Have I got News for You and almost outstripping Channel Four's most popular programme, Friends. When the second series was shown on Saturday nights in 1998 it took 7 million viewers and 40% of the audience. Almost every comedy writer from Ben Elton and Richard Curtis to John Sullivan and David Renwick pay homage to this `the perfect sitcom'. When BBC centre was blacked out on Tuesday 20 June for the first time in 40 years by a power cut Dad's Army was drafted in to save us from blank screens. Dad's Army is simply an icon in TV comedy. For the first time the complete illustrated scripts with introductions to each episode by the authors.

Book Description
On 4 May 1471 the forces of Lancaster under the Duke of Somerset and those of York under Edward IV clashed at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire in one of the decisive battles of the Wars of the Roses. Edward's overwhelming victory secured for him the throne of England and led to the near ruin of the Lancastrian cause. Steve Goodchild's gripping account of the fighting, and of the politics and intrigue that led to it, is the first to take fully into account the landscape of the West Country over which the opposing armies marched and the terrain on which they fought.
Book Description
Written in the intense political and intellectual tumult of the early years of the Weimar Republic, Political Theology develops the distinctive theory of sovereignty that made Carl Schmitt one of the most significant and controversial political theorists of the twentieth century.
Focusing on the relationships among political leadership, the norms of the legal order, and the state of political emergency, Schmitt argues in Political Theology that legal order ultimately rests upon the decisions of the sovereign. According to Schmitt, only the sovereign can meet the needs of an "exceptional" time and transcend legal order so that order can then be reestablished. Convinced that the state is governed by the ever-present possibility of conflict, Schmitt theorizes that the state exists only to maintain its integrity in order to ensure order and stability. Suggesting that all concepts of modern political thought are secularized theological concepts, Schmitt concludes Political Theology with a critique of liberalism and its attempt to depoliticize political thought by avoiding fundamental political decisions.

Taking Exception .......2006-10-02
This book was becoming too influential to remain out of print for long, and its first sentence alone --"sovereign is he who decides on the exception"-- has likely been cited by more scholars than have ever actually read the second sentence. Still, though influenced by second-hand readings of Schmitt, most scholars manage to get quite a bit right about Schmitt's thesis, if only because it is simple, aphoristic and open-ended. Whatever its merits-- and there are many-- there is much to take exception with in Schmitt's book and in the concepts it has influenced. The notion of "the exception" requires particularly rigorous clarification because it has too often been elevated to the political-theological realm, been imbued with a fierce alterity or normless negativity, and sometime de-secularized as an equivalent of a miracle. Part of this is conflation of two senses of "exceptional": (1) "Norm vs. exception", which is a juridical distinction; and (2) the notion of "ordinary vs. extraordinary," which is more of a cultural or aesthetic distinction. The first of these-- the more banal definition-- is the one that is relevant to legal issues [OED: "The action of excepting (a person or thing, a particular case) from the scope of a proposition, rule, etc.; the state or fact of being so excepted. Something abnormal or unusual; contrasted with the rule"]. In political-theological terms, however, "The exception in jurisprudence is analogous the miracle in theology." Carl Schmitt, Political Theology: Four Chapters On The Concept Of Sovereignty (Cambridge: MIT Press, 1985), 36. This is fine as an analogy, but Schmitt-- elsewhere rigorous about separating politics, aesthetics, economics, etc.-- here drags "the miracle" back into the juridical realm. In this way Schmitt's theory that "Sovereign is he who decides [in and upon] the state of exception" can be rephrased in Weberian terms as the "charismatic" exceptional: a "certain quality" "not accessible to the ordinary person." The personal qualities unique also claim that this person, in extraordinary times will be revealed to be the true sovereign. This lends itself to the unreflective conflation of the two senses of the word "exception" and inflects sovereignty with the cult of charisma.
Insightful, Well-translated.......2006-07-15
After many years, Carl Schmitt's works have finally reached the shores of the English-speaking world. Having been isolated by much of the scholarly community due to his complicity and support for Nazi Germany, it is only in recent decades that his works have garnered interest.
Ideas
Political Theology, like many of his most famous works, was written during a prolific period of his life in Weimar Germany. Indeed, this book bears the marks and concerns of the fragile political system in which he lived. Disenchanted with parliamentary democracy and the legal reasoning of his time, Schmitt develops in this book a devastatingly sharp critique of liberal democracy and legal normativism--a critque which has become very pertinent to our current political climate (2006).
In place of this, Schmitt probes into the historical and ideological framework of the state and politics so as to discover its essential characteristics, which he argues is defined and circumscribed by the exception. In short, the exception is a moment of true decision by a soveriegn, by which the legal norm is created. For, as the famous opening lines of the book proclaim, "Sovereign is he who decides on the exception."
Translation and Introduction
Now, George Schwab has done an excellent translation of this work so as to make it clear and readable. As such, I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Carl Schmitt, early 20th century political theory, Weimar Germany, or recent political works by Giorgio Agamben and Chantal Mouffe. Moreover, I also recommend reading the foreword and introduction, which provide a clear and succint overview of Schmitt's political theory.
Lastly, Schmitt's works are not very accessible to a quick reading. I recommend going over this book very carefully and thoroughly--best not before bedtime. I would also recommend his other works. I have found Schmitt to be terribly and sometimes frightfully insightful and believe that his ideas are essential to understanding modern political institutions, practices, and ideology.
Swede thru the back door.......2000-06-12
The boring and obvious meaning of the title is that the modern conceptions of sovereignty--for instance, in the us constitution, where the sole individual is the executive and the collective of representatives is the legislative-is the legacy or secularization (however that occurs) of formerly religious. The simpler argument obscures a paradox: the sovereign himself stands outside the legal order (Ordnung) that he creates. Hence: the sovereign decides on the exception, ie, what stands outside the legal order. The problem of repetition, and the state as machine (machina machinarum) is solved by the heroic creation ex nihilo of the sovereign. In Hegel's conception, the sovereign is a living, breathing human being (if only as a figurehead) because there exists always the possibility of a life and death struggle.

Book Description
This original ethnography brings indigenous peopleâs stories into conversations around troubling questions of social justice and environmental care. Deborah Bird Rose lived for two years with the Yarralin community in the Northern Territoryâs remote Victoria River Valley. Her engagement with the peopleâs stories and their action in the world leads her to this analysis of a multi-centred poetics of life and land. The book speaks to issues that are of immediate and broad concern today: traditional ecological knowledge, kinship between humans and other living things, colonising history, environmental history, and sacred geography. Now in paperback, this award-winning exploration of the Yarralin people is available to a whole new readership. The boldly direct and personal approach will be illuminating and accessible to general readers, while also of great value to experienced anthropologists.
Customer Reviews:
Best of breed.......1998-09-14
There are very few writers who have been able to respectfully penetrate the aboriginal culture and still preserve what is sacred. Rose's book immerses the reader into another reality, and she does so without superficial glorification or gratuitous pandering. Much better known in Australia than in the US (where the number of the books available about aboriginals is limited), this book is the best I've found. I recommend it to the reader who wants to get past the tour guide/New Age fare and into a much more authentic point of view.

PARROTS.......2007-01-11
BOOK IS VERY DESCRIPTIVE AND INFORMATIVE .... A MUST FOR ANYONE INVOLVED WITH BIRDS.
Book Description
This fascinating species of parakeet is thoroughly profiled, including detailed information on cages, aviaries, plus feeding and maintaining a healthy and happy bird. Over 45 brilliant full-color photos reveal the different varieties of this attractive bird.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2007-02-17
I recently got my first Red Rump parakeet. Ordered this book to get good basic information on care and such. Felt it was a good basis all around book for all Australian parakeets. Went into many types of the Australian keets.
Good book but ordered for someone else.......2006-08-22
The only reason I gave this book 3 stars is because I simply looked through it briefly. I ordered it for a friend of mine who has a Pale-headed Rosella. I assume she finds it helpful. Sorry I couldn't be more specific!
Field guide for broad-tailed parakeets.... .......2005-01-09
THE NEW AUSTRALIAN PARAKEET HANDBOOK by Matthew Vriends, is a relatively technical volume covering "everything about purchase, housing, care, nutrition, behavior, breeding and disease' and a special chapter on `understanding the Australian Parakeet'
Ever wonder where that blue or yellow budgie you own fits into the larger scheme of the Parakeet world? This book won't tell you. NAPH describes the whereabouts of selected parakeets native to Australia, not `Melopsittacus undulatus. You won't find `Budgies' in the index either, and the `Grass Parakeet is not the Budgie according to this book.
Vriends book covers the so-called `broad tailed parakeets' ornamental birds you might encounter on a field trip and want to breed yourself, could you catch a pair. Vriends Includes descriptions of Nymphicus hollandicus known to most of us as the`Cockatiel' and he also writes about lesser known species such as Rosellas, Ring-necks and Red-rumped Parakeets, as well as the Yellow-vented Blue Bonnet parakeet which must be a sight to see in the wild. Vriends book is really a breeding and "birding" book comparable to those published by the Smithsonian on captive breeding programs for `threatened' birds held in captivity and/or finding them in their threatened habitats, and would make a good companion on your next trip through Australia to search the bush and back roads. In fact, one great shot shows an old guy with camper in the background, feeding a wild flock of Australian King Parrots with bright red heads (could this be the author?). The book includes many photos with poor captions and plenty of black and white drawings which I find offputting when trying to determine which species might be lurking on the fence post yonder.
The New Australian Parakeet Handbook.......2002-08-07
This was one of the very few books that covered to any degree the rare species of bird that I recently purchased.
I have also seen this title in a highly respected local bird farm library.
Highly recommended for not extensive information on each breed, but short summaries on about every breed of Australian parakeet you need to know about.
Excellent resource book.......2001-04-30
Dr. Vriends is one of the formost authorities on birds, and this book is an excellent example of his knowledge in unusual species. It covers all Australian parakeets that are usually kept, and is currently the most comprehensive guide to these interesting beauties. Highly recommend this book for all who own or are considering owning Australian broad and long tailed parakeets.
Book Description
Laughing Kookaburras are the largest kingfishers in the world, and Blue-winged Kookaburras are not far behind. Their size and distinctive shape and posture make them easily recognisable; their comical and personable characters make them readily memorable. They are able to live in a wide variety of habitats, and adapt to living around humans relatively well. This cheerful familiarity has caused them to figure prominently in the psyches and folklores of all peoples who have inhabited Australia.
Kookaburras live in family groups marked by the extremes of social behaviour. Whilst in the nest, chicks fight their siblings for dominance and food so aggressively that the smallest chick is often killed. In complete contrast, many adult kookaburras delay their own breeding in order to help their relatives raise young.
Kookaburra: King of the Bush provides a complete overview of kookaburras and their unique place in Australian culture and natural history.
Book Description
Revised and updated edition of the classic Slater's Field Guide to Australian Birds. Now a household name among birdwatchers it is the book to which both beginners turn to and experienced birdwatchers rely on. Designed for field use it describes and illustrates approx 775 species recorded to date in Australia, nearby islands and seas of the continental shelf.

Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
A really nice bird book. This is designed to be small enough to take around with you, and big enough that the pictures used for identification are actually usable for most people. In general, this field guide has struck a happy medium, and is quite a useful book to have for the bird fancier. A very handy publication.
Awesome Guide to Australian Birds!!.......2003-11-30
I just returned from Australia and used this guide exclusively for bird watching in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne! It is easy to use, both logical and very informative. The paintings of each and every bird are exquisite and very, very accurate!
If you want a comprehensive and user friendly bird guide, this is THE ONE to get...It's lightweight, sturdy and an overall excellent source while out and about either in the city or in the Outback bush! FIVE STARS for this one...you will love it!!!

Customer Reviews:
Great PP patterns for a baby quilt ..........2005-09-20
But not good for people who are new at paper piecing. This book does include basic instructions, but the patterns all need to be cut apart, which is not the usual practice. If you've succeeded at PPing before, you will do just fine - but if you just want to try it out, I'd recommend starting with a Carol Doak book until you feel confident.
On a way postitive note, this book was ordered so that I can make a baby quilt for my SIL and BIL. They spent some time in Australia and had a blast trying to decide on just 12 animals out of this book for the quilt.
