I still don't have received this book. First it will arrive at the end of Februar, nov aprox April! But I already paid for it.
Her Infinite Variety.......2001-04-19
This book is one of the most interesting photographic studies of a woman that I have ever seen because it displays so many dimensions of the same person. You feel like you've moved past the external to understand the psyche of Lisa Lyon. Most books of female photography focus on one aspect of one female role, whether it be as fashion model, temptress, character etched in a face, tender of children, or as a beautiful icon. This book captures all those roles except the tender of children, plus adds quite a few others that are rarely seen. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the full potential of the photographic art.
Before going further, you should realize that this book contains much female nudity of a challenging sort that would probably cause the images to exceed an R rating if they were a motion picture.
Most of the images were taken in New York City between 1980 and 1982. Ms. Lyon had won the first World Women's Bodybuilding Championship in Los Angeles in 1979. She refused to defend her title, stating that she was a "performance artist" who acts as a "sculptor whose raw material was her own body." Seeing her posing in these images makes me realize that aspect of her talent and interests. She and Mr. Mapplethorpe collaborated on what images to shoot, and enjoyed lively wrangles along the way.
The foreword by Samuel Wagstaff nicely summarizes the results. The images "escape the shackles of womanly stereotype." As the dust cover image shows, she could sit like a "lady" while showing her "muscle" at the same time. The joint effects are fascinating. As Mr. Wasgtaff points out, it's "a new freedom of tongue-in-cheek." One image has her standing totally bare wearing only an old-fashioned gas mask.
Ms. Lyon adds her own comment. "The pictures are a little hard, like us." As a body builder, she can pose so that you see extreme muscle definition or she can relax in a dress and simply look like a fascinating fashion model. This flexibility adds greatly to the viewer's enjoyment.
In the essay by Bruce Chatwin, you can learn a lot about Mr. Mapplethorpe's work here. "His eye for a face is the eye of a novelist in search of a character . . . ." ". . . [H]is eye for a body that of a classical sculptor in search of an 'ideal.'" Mr. Mapplethorpe's female sitters "seem mesmerized . . . by his presence, and they are temporarily transported into a dream-world."
As for Ms. Lyon, she describes herself this way. "My childhood was dark." Mr. Chatwin points out the wonderful contribution she makes to the images through her "histrionics, ability to sass, spoof, impersonation, parody, caricature, and charade." He feels that Mr. Mapplethorpe and she have created a "picaresque novel." Mr. Mapplethorpe was originally attracted by her "air of an Old Testament heroine."
I found almost all of the images to be outstanding. They are not named, so I will do my best to describe a few to give you a flavor for the work.
Emerging from the water, Fire Island, New York (this is a classic Venus pose);
Framed by foliage, Jamaica (this gives a feeling of full-bodied innocence in the Garden of Eden);
In repose on a raised cement curb, Jamaica (this gives a sculptoral feeling of looking at a Greek goddess);
Lifting torso on bench, Jamaica (this is a difficult muscle stunt that displays perfect form and strength, and gives the feeling of classic sculpture);
Silhouette with knife, New York City (this looks like a French cut-out);
Sitting on edge of shower, Jamaica (this feels like a woman in deep thought and is all about the mind, even though the body is nude);
Holding hand mirror wearing corset looking out, New York City (this one raises the question of, who am I?);
Flamenco dancer with her hand holding her skirt up to one side, New York City (this is an idealisation of the female identity);
Nude lit by flaming paper, New York City (this seems like a primitive woman celebrating the religious mysteries).
I found all of the many fashion shots to be delightful because they have a campy feeling. My favorite was the one of her wearing a fedora.
For comparison, I suggest you look at Boris Vallejo's fine photograpic studies of female bodybuilders for his illustrations. That will give you the full sense of how imaginative and wonderful these photographs are.
The question this collection poses is how to get beyond stereotypes. Often these preset notions are so grounded in our thinking that we are not even aware of them. As a result, we presume, assume, and misjudge. We project our fears onto what we see, and act accordingly. I suggest that you use this work to encourage you to project your love and caring instead.
Look beyond what you see now, to imagine what could be. Then act on the potential!
The "other" Mapplethorpe.......1999-12-12
Robert Mapplethorpe is famous for his highly erotic male nudes. He also created a series of B/W photos of flowers in order to have pictures to sell that were not so erotically charged. His photos of Lisa Lyon, the first famous female bodybuilder, fall into a very different category. Mapplethorpe shot a few other muscular females in the late 1970s, but his most extensive work was with Lisa. This was a very collaborative project - Lisa Lyon was a kind of "performance artist" who was very involved in creating the images seen in this book. By modern standards, Lisa hardly looks like a bodybuilder at all (the so-called "fitness" women are more muscular) but she was very much a pioneer in the field and Mapplethorpe was one of the few photographers of the day (another being Helmut Newton) to turn his attention to the muscular female body. "Lady" is an interesting book of pictures, especially for (1) fans of Mapplethrope, (2) fans of Lisa Lyon, (3) fans of the muscular female physique - as well as those who simply like interesting collections of photographs.
View it once and feel bored, then view it again and again........1997-09-07
I am a Mapplethorpe fan and, after viewing the Lisa Lyon publication the first time, I felt somewhat disappointed. Then, days later, I became curious as to what I may have overlooked in the pictures. Indeed. Even today, when I open the book to enjoy the work of Mapplethorpe, I sometimes notice something of interest I missed the last time. By no means, is Lisa Mapplethorpe's best publication, but, most assuredly, it is a good buy and one which will gather no dust
An eye opening exploration of the beauty of a strong woman.......1997-01-31
Robert Mapplethorpe is one of our century's most misunderstood, and important artists. His skill with the camera was matched only by his genius in deciding what, and how, to photograph. These images of Lisa Lyons are at times reminiscient of the work of Edward Weston, one the the all time great photographers of history, and they reveal the true beauty of feminine strength. Sadly, Robert was one of the casualties of the AIDS crisis, but his work lives on, and will change lives for the better for many, many years to come. Customer Reviews:
There are better book on conducting........2006-08-25
Informative value: 2 out of 5
Musical excerpts help improve this otherwise over priced text.
You can easily find books that are much more helpful than this one. Brock McElheran's Conducting technique for beginners is much more relevant and informative, not to mention way cheaper. Anything by Elizabeth Green would also be great. I believe the problem with the book is that it relies too much on defining gesture. Whenever gesture rather than music is the source of information for your conducting, you will have problems. The irony is that people (conductors and performers alike) become so concerned with maintaining a clear beat pattern and that everything is 'correct' that they disregard the music.
One good thing in the book is the large number of musical examples and excerpts. Over half of the book is dedicated to excerpts of good music that present a variety of challenges. This does raise one large question, though. Why not just have the students buy the McElheran and use scores that they bought and can later use in their own classroom or with their own ensemble? It seems that many people find the collection of excerpts helpful, though. It would be ridiculous to require students to buy even half of the score that are represented in this book.
The challenge in writing a text on conducting is that it needs to be helpful to all sorts of people. Different people will need different help, and the book attempts to cater to this variety. However, Labuta's attempt to inform the least knowledgeable people brings the level of the book so far down that it looses meaning after you can conduct a six pattern.

Attorney Kevin Ring has assembled Justice Antonin Scalia's most scathing, most poignant, and most accessible opinions to date. Specific rulings and speeches are explained as Ring invites readers into the judicial world.
Customer Reviews:
Writings of the Supreme Court's Wittiest, Most Outspoken Justice.......2007-08-31
~Scalia Dissents: Writings of the Supreme Court's Wittiest, Most Outspoken Justice~ is an intriguing anthology of some of the most pivotal Supreme Court cases during the tenure of associate Justice Antonin Scalia. Scalia has been a vigorous proponent of textualism in legal statutory interpretation and originalism as it relates to construction of the Constitution. He has been a passionate critic of the idea of a Living Constitution, declaring in tongue-in-cheek fashion that, "I like my Constitution dead." Though, Scalia is considered a conservative, he takes a more favorable view of national power and may be considered a partisan of Alexander Hamilton. At a conference on federalism, Scalia urged his colleagues to embrace a positive view of federal power "as Hamilton would have urged you--to keep in mind that the federal government is not bad but good. The trick is to use it wisely." Yet on the same token, Scalia has eschewed attempts to bring every issue under the jurisdiction of the federal judiciary. Moreover, he has been a relentless advocate of judicial restraint. Scalia proclaimed defiantly, "The Court must be living in another world. Day by day, case by case, it is busy designing a Constitution for a country I do not recognize." And later, he avowed, "This Court seems incapable of admitting that some matters--any matters--are none of its business." In moments of sober-minded reflectiveness, Scalia recaptures the forgotten lineaments of the constitutional federal republic, in his thoughtful dissenting opinions. For example, he has vigorously defended the separation of powers, and protested the abuse, misuse, and creation of free-wheeling independent counsels and sentencing commissions which rob judges of their discretion in adjudicating justice. He has challenged federal absurdities relating to mandated preferential treatment for ethnic minorities and peoples with disabilities. Though, Scalia has aggravated some conservatives at the same time, such as his majority opinion in Employment Division v. Smith (1990), which religious conservatives believe struck a blow at the free exercise of religion by laying the groundwork for more devastating precedents. What makes the book funny, for any pre-law or law student who may recollect, Scalia has a witty sense of humor. Kevin Ring captures a few of those so called Scalia moments. Objecting to the judicial activism of the radical separation of church and state crowd, Scalia has protested the precedent set in the Lemon case, declaring: "Like some ghoul in a late-night horror movie that repeatedly sits up in its grave and shuffles abroad, after being repeatedly killed and buried, Lemon stalks our Establishment Clause jurisprudence once again." Overall, this is a thoughtful collection of witty dissents by the Associate Justice. Though, I am a textualist and an originalist as well, I could take issue with a few of Scalia's opinions as they relate to civil liberties, particularly his deference to the present administration admidst the wave of anti-terror legislation that came after 9/11. But still, Scalia's principled jurisprudential philosophy makes the book well worth considering nonetheless. The editor Kevin Ring offers a pensive and succinct overview of Scalia's judicial philosophy at the beginning of this splendid volume.
Judicial Insightful.......2007-06-16
This book contains a compilation of rulings by conservative Supreme Court associate justice Antonin Scalia, who was appointed to the bench in 1986. Includes his written opinions on religion, abortion, the ASA, gay rights, capital punishment, free speech, and affirmative action, referencing the U.S. Constitution and its historical interpretations. This book will give you an insightful look at our Supreme Court. What better time to read this then now, when some of our federal judges are making laws instead of interpreting and ruling on them as they should be.
Scalia dissents.......2007-05-30
a great book and a great read for anyone who is interested in what is really happening in the highest court in the land
In His Own League.......2007-01-27
Justice Scalia famously wrote that: "This Court seemed incapable of admitting that some matters - any matters, is none of its business." The Court's amateurish performance in Martin vs. PGA Tour was a case in point, where a bad law (ADA) was made worse by a muddled interpretation, where seven Justices of the highest court tried to adjudicate what is "essential" to a game of Golf!
In Morrison vs. Olson, Justice Scalia wrote a lone dissenting opinion that is long and spirited. Its brilliance only came to light when his haunting predictions came true over and over again - to the point that Congress eventually had to let the statute (of the appointment of the Independence Council) lapse. Re-reading Scalia's dissent is indeed instructional - you get to appreciate why the doctrine of separation of powers is central to the protection of freedom.
The above are just two of the many memorable opinions (both dissenting) by Scalia that are part of this book's collection. I don't always agree, in moral terms, with the legal outcome of his analyses, but I must say that he is true to his duty of protecting and defending the Constitution. His opinions are direct, persuasive and witty (which makes them fun to read), and his analyses bear an imprint of exceptionalism.
History will enshrine Scalia as perhaps the most brilliant justice who has ever served.
This book is not for everyone. It does require an intense interest in constitutional law on the part of the reader, and considerable concentration, to get the full benefit of the book. If my review here has motivated just one more person to read this fine book, I am gratified.
Partly polemic, partly disingenuous, but still partly interesting.......2006-02-17
In the dust jacket, the book purports to let "Justice Scalia speak for himself" and it sounds fairly neutral, praising his prose more than anything else.
Unfortunately, it quickly becomes clear this is more of a conservative love-fest, and at book's end, there is no longer any pretense at objectivity. Example: "In Scalia's America, freedom, democracy, and diversity would flourish...." Okaaaay.
There is no serious criticism of Scalia's opinions anywhere in the book. Which would be fine if this were truly a book that simply let Scalia speak for himself. But it isn't. Ring sings his praises at every turn, defends him against all his critics, and can seemingly find no fault with anything Scalia has ever said or written.
Many of Scalia's opinions in the book are actually very compelling, and he does have an acerbic wit. I found myself in complete agreement with Scalia in the ADA/PGA Golf Tour case, and I agreed in principle on his Affirmative Action and Death Penalty stances. So I'm not knocking this book because I dislike Scalia or his opinions. I simply think the book is operating under false pretenses.
When we get to Freedom of Speech, Ring mentions in passing that Scalia voted to uphold flag-burning as a form of speech, but doesn't explain how this passes Scalia's "originalism" test. Did Congress have flag-burning in mind when it adopted the First Amendment? If not, is there support for it in the country's legal and social traditions? If not, then how is it protected under "originalism"? Scalia avoided the question by silently joining the majority opinion. I'm guessing Ring avoided it because it didn't fit his conservative agenda.
Ring was more eager to discuss Hill v. Colorado, a case where abortion protestors were also claiming freedom of speech. Ring characterized their "speech" as nothing more than "oral protest," "counseling," and "education" on the sidewalks outside abortion clinics, neglecting to mention that some anti-abortion protestors would "yell, thrust signs in faces, and generally try to upset the patient[s] as much as possible," would surround patients and scream at them, and so on. Now, perhaps that behavior is irrelevant and should be protected the same as polite, respectful speech. But by glossing over that behavior, Ring and Scalia do a disservice to the argument.
Ring implies that Scalia is the only Justice on the Supreme Court to have a consistent judicial philosophy, that he is "unique". In fact, Ring uses the word unique so much that Scalia must be UNIQUELY unique. Does this mean that every one of the other eight Justices has no philosophy, is not unique, and is somehow less rational or less responsible, simply because they haven't publicly beaten their own drum? The answer is buried in their opinions, so until someone does a more balanced analysis, Ring's assertions need to be read with a healthy skepticism.

Must have book if you're planning a trip to see Falkland Island's wildlife.......2005-08-28
I bought this book because we are planning a trip to the Falkland Islands specifically to see the penguins. Our goal is to view all 17 species of penguins in their natural habitats. This book really identified exactly where to see which type of penguin, how many nest at each site, time of year they come on shore to breed, etc... For this purpose, I highly recommend this book. Although we admire Dr. Bingham work and support his cause, some of the text came across as an angry diatribe against the Falkland Island government which may lessen the scientific credibility of his work, eg "Firstly I discovered firearms hidden under my bed, but I was able to dispose of them prior to the Customs raid...".
