Customer Reviews:
Well-written Reference Work.......2007-01-11
My spouse is an avid quilt enthusiast that has for some time wanted to delve more into fabrics, their manufacture and individual characteristics. My gift to her of this standard reference work gives her the long awaited opportunity to really understand the materials before she designs a new quilt. She can now also select new and different fabrics for their inherent characteristics rather than only select "off the shelf" fabrics usually found at most fabric shops.
A must for anyone who needs to understand textile basics.......2004-05-22
The Fabric Reference, along with the Fabric Glossary provides the best comprehensive reference of basic textiles that you can obtain anywhere in today's market. To make it a perfect reference set, you can purchase the Fabric Glossary Swatch Set directly from Ms. Humphries, which provides fabric samples to be taped into the Fabric Glossary while giving the history, manufacturing (weave, knit, lace, etc.) description and fabric content for each swatch allowing for a realistic study of fabrics. This Fabric Glossary can be continually added to as you find new fibers and fabrics - keeping an updated reference at your finger tips.
These boks are a must for fabric designers, interior designers, pattern drafters and anyone interested in fabrics or textiles, this is a three part set, which when purchased becomes all inclusive. It is rare to find any books on textiles where you can actually touch the fabrics, providing a realistic knowledge of specific make-up and texture of the fabrics. I searched for years to find a book which I could use to give a compressive overview of the textile industry, before I found Ms. Humphries set of books, and I have been using it for the past three years as the foundation of my college course. Please note that in the fall of 2003, the third revision came out and it provides a wealth of information about the new micro-fibers that are found in today's market.
This three part set (2 parts you can purchase from this company and the swatch set you need to purchase separately - information to do this, is in each book) is the best reference of textiles available.

Book Description
The entertainment industry is one of the largest sectors of the United States economy and fast becoming one of the most prominent globally. In this fully revised book, Harold L. Vogel examines the business economics of the major entertainment enterprises: movies, television, and cable programming, music, broadcasting, casino wagering and gambling, sports, publishing, performing arts, theme parks, and toys. He has also added a new section pertaining to recent theoretical work explaining box office performance. He offers new material that links the concept of cultural capital to the organizational aspects shared by all creative industries, expands the coverage of deal elements in the music industry, and provides additions to the sports economics chapter. The result is a comprehensive, up-to-date reference guide on the economics, financing, production, and marketing of entertainment in the U.S. and overseas. Investors, business executives, accountants, lawyers, arts administrators, and general readers will find that the book offers an invaluable guide to how entertainment industries operate. Harold L. Vogel has been selected as a top leisure industry analyst nine times by Industrial Investor. He is a member of the New York State Governor's Advisory Board for Motion Pictures and Television. Vogel was a senior analyst with Merrill Lynch for seventeen years and is an adjunct professor at the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University. He is also the author of Travel Industry Economics (Cambridge, 2000). Previous Edition Hb (2001): 0-521-79264-9
Customer Reviews:
Great Information.......2006-08-02
The book is rather dry, although it does offer great pieces of information for referencing covering virtually every facet of the ent. industry.
Entertainment Industry Economics.......2005-07-28
A very clear explanation of the history, issues, rationale and economic flows of the entertainment industry. The book includes a comprehensive list of sources of information as well as details the sources for every bit of information it provides. This is very useful as it familiarizes the reader with the gathering of information in relation with the industry and the relative authority of the sources.
Insightful!.......2004-10-25
Author and entertainment industry analyst Harold L. Vogel sheds valuable light on the growing importance of fun in the American economy. His book shows surprising versatility, sometimes reading like an economics textbook, and other times providing an engaging and easily readable overview of the entertainment business. Vogel provides exhaustive sources and an authoritative perspective, linking the entertainment industry's technology-driven increase in productivity to the public's increased expenditures on music, movies, sports, games, theme parks and other forms of entertainment. The relatively modest attention he pays to the performing arts reflects their unfortunate status as a poor stepchild we find this book's breadth and depth impressive, and strongly recommends it to analysts, scholars and students who seek a clear picture of the economic role of entertainment.
Want a book to Put you to Sleep????.......2004-09-14
Then I'd recommend this book. It wouldn't be that bad if it were to exclude devoting a lot of time to basic principles of Macro and Microeconomics. If I wanted to study Macro or Microconomics, then I would have just bought a textbook on that subject. The author seems more inclined to impress us with his knowledge of economics in general than to focus on the entertainment industry. Very dry book.
Best used as a reference.......2002-10-03
This book is the most complete available dealing with the various industries that make up "entertainment " in our society. It has many nice figures and tables that can be used to illustrate a point if you're a student doing a report, or a teacher covering this area in a lecture. But, it is a very dry read otherwise. It works best for me as a reference text to be used in companion to other texts on the various subjects. It'll have to be updated anually to be a valid reference in this age of the internet... it could use a website to go along with it maybe? Good book to keep on the shelf and refer to when you need a stat.

Book Description
In countries traditionally supportive of cultural programs, government funding for the arts has come under fire like never before. Conservative cut-and-slash governments and even more benign administrations have identified the cultural sector as an area where ruthless downsizing can be exercised with minimal resistance. Politically motivated orchestration of public reaction to 'obscene art' has put artists and art institutions on the defensive. Globalization, as embodied by the WTO, has placed national cultures in a perilous position. In the growing body of provocative writing on the benefits and risks of government funding the fundamental issues of money and value have not been addressed. These original essays do so with a mix of theory, critique, humour and compelling visuals. Contributors include Andy Fabo, Bill Burns, Barbara Godard, Robin Pacific and Rinaldo Walcott. Essays include: In the Bedrooms of the Nation: State Security and the Funding of Dirty Art ; Mixed Funding, Mixed Markets, Little Pictures ; The Bio-Politics of Globalization ; Public Operations: Art Theory, Cultural Methodology and Social Change ; Initiatives in Cultural Democracy. A Canadian perspective on a global problem.

This is the second volume in a comprehensive study of military weapons and equipment in the Middle Ages.
Customer Reviews:
Monumental work, if you know the subject.......2000-08-12
David Nicolle tends to be biased towards the Mid-East (ie: all good things in the Middle Ages come from Asia), but he manages to mostly leave his biases out in this monumental work. If you are looking for a pretty picture book, or an introduction to the topic, like various Osprey books, this ain't it. What it is a look at surviving pieces, iconography, statuary, and literary referrances to present a comprehensive look at what arms and armour of the period are recorded. Definately more for the serious enthousiast than the casual reader.
A giant book of drawings with brief info.......2000-04-17
Upon opening this book you find that it is not really a book but a giant catalog of drawings of archealogical pieces many of which have nothing to do with arms or armour. Each has a brief description and if you wish to see the line drawing of the item described you must continually flip to the back of the book. Besides these short descriptions, actual text amounts to probably only 15 pages throughout the book. Not very informative overall.
Book Description
This collection of biting essays written by William Blum includes some previously published ones and several written exclusively for this book. Among them:
"The Bombing of PanAm Flight 103: Case Not Closed"
"Cuban Political Prisoners . . . in the United States"
"What do the Imperial Mafia Want in Iraq?"
"Myth and Denial in the War Against Iraq."
"Hiroshima: Needless Slaughter, Useful Terror"
"Hostages in Peru: Their Terrorists, our Freedom Fighters"
"The Myth of America's Booming Economy"
"A New Yorker Trapped in Los Angeles"
"Treason: None Dare Call it Nothing"
William Blum is the author of the monumental reference work, Killing Hope: CIA and Military Intervention since World War II and Rogue State, a Guide to the World's Only Superpower.
Customer Reviews:
Why Are They Shooting at Us?.......2006-04-05
For the last 40 years, American soldiers have been trading potshots with locals from Vietnam to Lebanon to Somalia to Iraq and wondering why. Since our troops have, of course, been sent to liberate these folks from one tyranny or another, shouldn't we be greeted with flowers and kisses like those old films from WWII. So why don't these locals at least recognize our good intentions, and stop shooting at us.
Blum's small volume won't furnish a definitive answer, but it will point the reader in the right direction. A collection of scatter-shot essays from one of empire's chief critics, the chapters are simply too brief and casual to have scholarly impact. I'm sure that critics, lacking better arguments, will dismiss the book as anti-American. Although the 26 chapters may be wide-ranging and impossible to organize, they add up to a damning glimpse at several of Washington's most cherished pieties-- 1) Our government respects democracy, 2) We're fighting terrorism everywhere, and 3) Our interventions are humanitarian. Washington expects us to swallow these truisms since everyone in authority keeps repeating them. Besides, "unAmerican" ideas like the author's aren't taught in school, read in newspapers, and are never, never seen on tv. No wonder, as Blum points out, 27% of adult Americans believe the sun revolves around the earth! For a culture that appears to equate critical thinking with a lack of patriotism, Blum's caustic aspersions on our popular mind-set seem a reasonable response.
Despite the book's mediocre quality, the author remains one of the most clear-eyed observers of America's far-flung and aggressive empire-- the 800 lb. gorilla no one wants to admit is in the room. Readers made curious by this loose collection should pick up Blum's master-work, Killing Hope, for a definitive look at how the empire operates. My one real complaint-- Why does the book conclude with a self indulgent cheap-shot at reality-challenged Angelenos? Mr. Blum should know that I, for one, live in Los Angeles and can assure him that I do not consult my astrological chart or any other psychic source for daily advice. No sir-ee, my wife does it for me.
Explains why we are not as loved as we think we are.......2006-03-06
This collection of essays authoritatively challenges American foreign policy. In a very bad and long-standing case of personal projection, America charges other nations with 'terrorism' while ignoring it's own actions.
Our double standard transcends presidents and parties, but Blum believes national conduct is most transparent under George W. Bush. Foreign policy is either done our way or else we invade and bomb the living daylights out of everything we can get a hold of.
It's not at all surprising this approach fails to convince countries that America is `good' and is actually shrinking our global status.
Blum's written other (more comprehensive) books providing a badly-needed perspective on American foreign policy. However, collections are useful 'intro' gifts.
Awesome Book ~ ENDORSED BY OSAMA!.......2006-01-20
This was a fantastic read on how BUSH SUCKS!!
Osama Bin Laden even reccommends the book for reading:

Brilliant essays on US state's violence and aggression.......2005-11-17
This is a brilliant collection of essays, extraordinarily acute, containing some fascinating information. Blum is the author of two of the very best books on US foreign policy - Rogue state: a guide to the world's only superpower (Common Courage, 3rd edition, October 2005) and Killing hope: US military and civil interventions since World War II (Zed Press, 2003).
This book includes a selection from his Anti-Empire Reports, available at www.killinghope.org; studies of some US interventions; an overview of the Cold War, showing how Cold Warriors have consistently used Goebbels' biggest and most-repeated lie about communist aggression and violence; and studies of the unemployment and poverty inflicted on American workers, exposing the myth, peddled by Gordon Brown among others, of the USA's booming economy.
Blum exposes the US state's current political violence against Cuba, Venezuela, Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan. Charles Clarke should perhaps readdress to George Bush and wormtongue Blair his remarks about how political violence is so unnecessary nowadays.
Contrary to Blair, the war on Iraq has not made us safer. Blum cites the US State Department as witness: "Tensions remaining from the recent events in Iraq may increase the potential threat to US citizens and interests abroad, including by terrorist groups." (Voice of America News, 21 April 2003.)
Blum quotes a leading member of Al Qa'ida who threatened that they will bomb people in Britain "until the people of the country themselves recognise that this is going to go on until they get the leadership changed." Oh, no, sorry, that was Britain's Admiral Sir Michael Boyce threatening to keep bombing people in Afghanistan.
Strangely enough, people the world over tend to react hostilely to aggression and violence. Colin Powell wrote of the 1983 US assault on Lebanon, "The U.S.S. New Jersey started hurling 16-inch shells into the mountains above Beirut, in World War II style, as if we were softening up the beaches on some Pacific atoll prior to an invasion. What we tend to overlook in such situations is that other people will react much as we would." Was he glorifying terrorism?
A fair critique.......2005-02-21
William Blum offers a selected view on America and her foreign policy though very thorough research. While this book paints a rather negative and red picture of the US, it does remain as a very factual source. The book is written with much sarcasm and despite the heavy opinionated writing it is humorous and the facts are entertainingly presented. Yet it is important to understand that the issues at hand and discussed in this literature rarely is looked upon as amusing and while presented so, they are very serious. This book may not me compared to that of Michael Moore who to many appears as childish and biased. Take this book with an open mind and try to understand the mechanisms that make this great nation run. When you read the quote below, you will know if you would like it or not.
"If I were the president, I could stop terrorist attacks against the United States in a few days. Permanently. I would first apologize to all the widows and orphans, the tortured and impoverished, and all the many millions of other victims of American imperialism. Then I would announce, in all sincerity, to every corner of the world, that America's global interventions have come to an end, and inform Israel that it is no longer the 51st state of the USA but now -- oddly enough -- a foreign country. I would then reduce the military budget by at least 90% and use the savings to pay reparations to the victims. There would be more than enough money. One year's military budget of 330 billion dollars is equal to more than $18,000 an hour for every hour since Jesus Christ was born. That's what I'd do on my first three days in the White House. On the fourth day, I'd be assassinated."
- William Blum
Book Description
One of the most comprehensive single-volume reference works on birds ever produced.
With photographs and descriptions of over 1,300 species, plus a full listing of every bird species in the world, this outstanding reference is an up-to-date portrait of the world birds. An international team of ornithologists provides concise descriptions and reveals the latest science in bird evolution, behavior, ecology, classification and identification. Organized by region and habitat rather than species, the book allows for a more instinctive understanding of birds and their relationships with each other and the environment.
The opening section on bird evolution and anatomy explains species classification and identification, showing how DNA research is causing a re-evaluation of the known science.
The directory makes up the bulk of the book. It is divided into six sections on the Earth's zoogeographical regions. Each section is written by a recognized authority and includes a thorough review of species, habitat and threats, and conservation organizations. Along with specially commissioned artwork, each species description includes:
- Scientific and common names
- Physical characteristics, behavior, habitat and distribution
- Conservation status
- Similar species, with cross-references.
This superb reference closes with an up-to-date list of the more than 9,800 species of birds recognized by ornithologists.
