Book Description
Fashioning Kimono focuses on 150 Japanese garments dating from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries, taken from the renowned Montgomery Collection, which includes informal kimonos for both women and men, haori jackets, under-garments, ceremonial and formal clothes, and children's robes. Some of the designs reflect historical continuity, but many others demonstrate a radical break from the traditional. Themes and designs from Western art predominate over historical Japanese references, illustrating the modernization and Westernization of Japan at this time.
The range of the collection represents one of the most dynamic periods in Japan's national costume. It encompasses the final phase of the "living" kimono, when the kimono was still the daily wear of most Japanese people. After Japan's defeat in the Pacific War and the destruction of virtually all its major urban centres, Western clothes quickly came to replace the kimono, being considered more affordable and conducive to the new post-war lifestyle. It eventually took on a purely ceremonial or formal role, and today, except for the few fashionably daring, the kimono is worn mainly for the tea ceremony, funerals, and weddings.

Wanting more.......2007-04-11
The first fourth of the book contains a lot of valuable information about styles and techniques, then the rest is page after page of photos. Beautiful photos, but I wish there was more discussion about cultural significance of the designs depicted.
Kimono.......2006-11-10
This is a beautiful book. As a maker of Kimono, I am always searching for reference books and this is one of the best.
A VIRTUAL PANOPLY OF COLOR, ART, AND HISTORY.......2005-11-16
"Fashioning Kimono" is a virtual panoply of color, art, and history focusing on kimono from the vast collection of Jeffrey Montgomery. Among the 1200 rare objects in Montgomery's enviable collection are these 150 kimono dating from the late nineteenth to the mid twentieth centuries. It is an array comprehensive in scope with kimono and haori jackets worn by men, women and children.
The almost 200 photographs of the textiles by Stefano Ember are stunning - bold, aresting in hue, delicate as a butterfly's wing in design. Publication of this volume accompanies an exhibition of the same name at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which runs from mid October of this year through May 1, 2006.
Annie Van Assche, the editor and primary author, presents a history of the kimono, while additional essays include such topics as new styles based on Art Nouveau and Art Deco designs, the kimono's influence on Parisian fashion, and the fascinating memoir of a Japanese girl growing up in the 1930s and 1940s.
As Van Assche notes silk is at the very heart of the Japanese kimono culture. It's strength, sheen and adaptability to dyes make it the ideal material. The inspired use of color, we learn, may be due in part to the fact that in ancient times the Japanese believed "color imbued a garment with special powers."
All with an interest in fashion, design and the Japanese culture will find "Fashioning Kimono" an indispensable addition to a personal library.

flowering of the Japanese kimono in its last years.......2005-11-14
The early decades of the 1900s were the final flowering for the Japanese kimono, the standard clothing for men and women going back for centuries. This was literally so for many kimonos; for they have bright, sometimes lavish, flower patterns and images from the influences of the Western art styles of art nouveau and even art deco. The growing modernization and Westernization of Japan at this time was seen in the changing patterns in the kimono. The stylistic innovations came to an end with the turn to Western clothing after Japan's defeat in WWII and the destruction of the country's industry. One hundred and fifty modern kimono from about the 1890s to the 1930s from the collection of Jeffrey Montgomery are shown in color photographs with close-ups of the details of a few. The photos are full-page on the right with notes on the facing page. The book is done in conjunction with an exhibition of the collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum through May 2006. The beginning essay by editor and contributor Annie Van Assche--textile artisan, Japanese art historian, and one-time curator of education for the Japan Society Gallery in New York--is an outstanding brief course on the artistic aspects, manufacture, and types and eras of kimono while serving as a lead-in to the following four essays taking up different topics regarding its final, modern, period.

Book Description
Neil Gaiman is one of the most successful and versatile writers working today. He has become renowned not only for the consistently high quality of his writing but for his mastery of many media. He is an award-winning comic book writer (Sandman), novelist (American Gods), children's book author (The Wolves in the Walls), and television screenwriter (Neverwhere). Yet with all the fans hungry to know more about his work, there has not yet been a single major nonfiction book covering Gaiman's entire creative output. Until now. This book presents a thorough look at Gaiman's work not only through his eyes, but through the eyes of his many collaborators. A must-read for Gaiman's many devotees--and for anyone else who's wild about fantasy, horror, and graphic novels. --School Library Journal

But you should know that filmmaking is a war, and this book will lead you through it like no other. These pages contain information learned from years spent in the filmmaking trenches.

Not many.
You want more? Then turn the book over and crack her open.
Still here?
Fine -- we'll do it the hard way: This book will tell you how to shoot a sex scene, tell you what a stinger is. And if you need help writing your script, we'll give you some scenes to copy right into your screen-play -- and yes, we even provide the characters.
In short, everything you need to know about filmmaking in the real world is in this book. Everything. We'll even help you select the proper baseball cap so you can look like a big-time director.
Now start reading. Let's make film history.

'How To Shoot A feautre Film For Under $10,000' Is a hit for me!.......2007-06-14
This book is really great! I learned a lot, and at the same time wanted to keep reading more. The book is really funny, and made me laugh lots of times. Bret Stern is very clever at telling you things, and he makes it fun along the way. And you can understand all that he says! it dosen't just go over your head! I'm young, and just learning, and I highly recomend this book! its one of the best of its kind! From teaching you how to write in script format, to trying to get your film to a distributor, Bret Stern shows you all that!
Hilarious & loaded w/solid suggestions.......2006-07-07
The book opens with a classic 'real life' scene from Stern's life, written as a screenplay, and gets better from there. I highly recommend this book. The writing alone is well worth the purchase -- even if it weren't chock full of great info.
"How to Shoot a Feature Film for Under $10,000 (And Not Go to Jail)" by Bret Stern was a great jaunt. This book is loaded with tips about what to do or not do, and how to do things cheaply and without permits -- and not go to jail.
While the book may be a bit out of date in terms of 'the DV revolution', the tips are not. The guerilla shooting style presented in this book CLEARLY is among the best approaches to knocking out a movie on DV, perhaps even better than a film.
The upside to shooting on DV vs film is cost, the downside is quality of image ... so subtract the cost of buying film ends and renting some film gear, and you STILL have costs for making a movie. So bottom line, Brent's book can still help broke movie-makers out AND have a chuckle at the same time.

Good Advice About Filmmaking But Technology is Out of Date.......2006-04-27
Bret Stern's book is funny, useful, and true, which makes it better than 90 percent of the filmmaking books out there. Stern breaks down the filmmaking process into small bits, all of which you can perform without spending a dime, and then, when money is involved, he shows you how you can somewhat legally avoid paying any. Unfunded or underfunded filmmaking is a dicey business, and Stern's book reads like it was written by a true junky. Fortunately for us, Stern's takes on everything but visual technology are dead on and never will out of date, at least until we can simulate actors on our home PC's (its coming, if not already here). Where Stern's book goes awry, for me, anyway, is that it hasn't been updated since 2002, and misses the DVX revolution. Every point of filmmaking has altered in favor of the ill-prepared since then. Running around with an ARRI SR3 or a BL required a platoon. Running around with a DVX-100a or, sigh, an HVX-200 requires a much smaller group. You still need a good script, and good lighting, all of which Stern discusses, and of course cheap food for the cast and crew. Stern supplies some nasty receipes which all have promise.
I hope that a revision is planned, since many people will dismiss this book. There is a lot to learn here, and a lot of good ideas. As Stern says, Skip the film technology parts.
Robert Rodriguez is a Master of Film.......2006-03-09
I've only glanced at a few pages of the book, and already I can tell that I'm going to learn a lot about coming up in the film industry. I'm an aspiring filmmaker, and Robert Rodriguez is one of my favourite directors. Learning about how he came up is just what I need to plan my big break. Thanks Rob!

Book Description
Taking their inspiration from the ancient skill of blacksmithing, the authors of this book take a fresh look at the mental processes involved in the accomplishment of goals. They analyze the way people apply what they know in order to reach a particular end, whether it is material or conceptual, routine or novel. The authors, anthropologists Janet and Charles Keller, provide an account of human accomplishment based on a detailed study of contemporary blacksmiths. The cognitive realm of blacksmithing is of particular interest because it relies on visual imagery and physical virtuosity rather than verbal logic, the conventional yardstick of cognition.
Customer Reviews:
Anthropology is Good -- Undertsanding cognition is good........2005-01-23
Gilmore gave this excellent book a 1 star rating because it was about anthropology, not blacksmithing. Duh.
This is a 5 star book about anthropology, and more generally, human cognition. It demonstrates that the traditional way we classify things -- by category (all hammers go together, all screwdrivers, all foods, all clothes), is misleading, because in real usage, categorization goes by function. So this hammer goes with that anvil. This bread goes with that meat and that mustard. Why? Because they are used together.
The book is filled with deep insights that come about through careful observation. Yes, the authors observed blacksmithing (hence the title), but this is a book about human cognition, not about blacksmithing.
It is most unfortunate that the book was given a low rating because it wasn't the topic the reviewer wanted it to be.
If you care about understanding people, this is a great book.
Bah.......2004-11-01
This is an anthropology book and has nothing to do with hands on blacksmithing.

Maxine Harrell owns one of the many hair salons on Detroit's West Side. Maxine spent her childhood watching her grandmother transform women from feeling down and out to loving themselves bringing smiles to their faces, all the while supplying some extra income to the household pot. "Doing hair," is her destiny. Still single and knocking on thirty's door, Maxine is desperately searching for someone real to love. With the help of her girls she'll get by, but stays determined to find happiness.

Love Shouldn't Hurt.......2005-08-22
Maxine Harrell is the proud owner of a successful hair salon, owns her own home and has a body most women would kill for. Indira Carr is a successful art gallery dealer, well educated and has the looks of a top model. Sydney Carr is a single mother with a good job, beautiful baby daughter and a supportive father.
All three women have been friends since they were young girls. All have a lot to learn about men. Maxine has to learn to get her one man. Indira has to learn that a man doesn't have to hit her to love her. Sydney's lesson comes in patience waiting for a man to do right. Each woman has to learn life's lesson by dealing with a man, but together they see it through.
She'll Learn is a story of personal struggles and life long friendships. I must say that although the story is a good one, there are many grammatical and typos through-out the book; hence I deducted a pen. The errors caused for annoying reading.

A Lesson Learned.......2004-12-28
How often does a man go through life feeling as though he'll never find his one and only true love? I'm sure it's not nearly as much as a woman does, especially if she is over the age of thirty and her biological clock no longer sounds like a tick - but an alarm. Maxine is business savvy but man stupid; she sleeps with men without knowing more than their names. Her physical needs take precedent over her emotional needs. Indira is in an abusive marriage with a man she loves dearly. She wanted to one day have children but can't, at least not with her husband since he had a vasectomy before they married. Sydney, on the other hand, is a single-mother still pining for the father of her child. She lives with the hope that one day he'll return to her and their daughter.
It's been said that past experiences dictate your future. In some cases that's true if you allow the vicious cycle to continue. Maxine is dealing with abandonment issues; her mother left her with her grandmother at a very young age, never to return. During a Thanksgiving dinner, Maxine's aunt reveals some shocking information about her mother and now Maxine must make a decision. Sydney's mother has never forgiven her for becoming pregnant by her thuggish boyfriend, Anthony. They have not spoken in almost two years even though they attend the same church and only sit two pews behind each other. A change is going to come and the person who brings it about is not whom you'd expect. Indira is steadily trying to hide her husband's abuse from her friends. Just when she's had enough, her husband decides to leave her and file for divorce. Indira is angered by the news and even more shocked when information she never knew about her husband is suddenly revealed.
There's a saying: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. She'll Learn is about the lessons you learn (or don't learn) from life's experiences. I've always said there's a person who always "takes you there." By that I mean there's a person who always manages to make you weak enough to let your defenses down. And even though you get hurt in the process, somehow you just can't let go; therefore causing you to do stupid things in the name of love (or even lust). You become vulnerable and before you know it, you're caught up in trying to prove something either to yourself or the person who has hurt you. Maxine, Indira and Sydney each are in this predicament and their friendship sustains them.
To know someone has got your back, no matter what, makes all the difference in the world. These women had their differences but they didn't let that stop them from being friends, even when times got rough. I've always known a person will keep doing what you allow them to do; She'll Learn drove the lesson home. I even saw myself in one of the characters; however, I won't reveal which one. The story flowed well and didn't skip a beat. Barkley - Staples did well with this one and only teased me by insinuating there would be a sequel. I can't wait.

NO NEED TO READ.......2004-10-07
There is no need to read this book, the description on the back of it tells the whole story. If the author had skills like Maya Angelou or Darnella Ford then you would read it just to see how the story was told. But this author doesn't have the skills to paint a picture with words or let metaphors speak for a person's actions. Not to mention all the typos, which were throughout the entire book. Can you say PROOFREAD? I almost toke a read pen, made corrections and mailed it to the author, the publisher and the distributor. Two thumbs down. I want my money back.
Sisterly Love.......2003-12-25
A friendship is considered a relationship filled with mutual affection, good will, and harmonious cooperation. If successful this bond becomes so strong that it results in a completeness that only a devoted family member can extend. She'll Learn by Sybil Barkley-Staples is a heart warming novel that embraces a friendship between three women, Indira, Sydney, and Maxine, during an unfortunate time in their lives.
Indira has been married to her husband, Robert, for over 5 years. Love at first sight overruled the fact that Robert was old enough to be her father, but the years of abuse and hatred has triggered such doubt about her marriage. Unable to take too much more, Indira is trapped between her love for a man who over chastises her every move and a aching for a family saturated with happiness.
Ambitious and outspoken, Maxine has become the beholder of "the truth will set you free" when it comes to any situation except her own. Scared of being alone for the rest of her life, Maxine takes out her anger on her friends by being rude and insensitive. The time has come for Maxine to grow up and face her demons from her past and present situation, but will she be able to accept it?
Caught between the man that she loves and a mother that is just as stubborn as she is, Sydney makes a choice that will alter her life and her heart. Dependent upon her friends for all the support they can offer, Sydney has learned to forgive and move on, until her past starts to resurface forcing her to make decisions that will steer her out of turmoil existence.
Connected since their childhood past, their friendship undergoes a test of support, guidance and forgiveness, enabling each woman to recognize their awaited path. Sybil Barkley-Staples has exemplified some of the hardships that we all go through in life, allowing readers to captivate the true meaning of sisterly love that some of us have been blessed with, yet still yearn for in our lives.

Girl Talk.......2003-07-01
Indira, Maxine and Sydney are best friends that grew up in Detroit's inner city. In Sybil Barkley-Staples' book She'll Learn, the women experience relationship problems with their men and their mothers. Indira is married to an abusive man twenty years her senior. When he decides to leave her, she is devastated. For years, Indira has harbored anger towards her deceased mother for staying in an abusive marriage, but finds herself doing the same thing. Maxine is searching for "Mr. Right." When she meets Bruce, she thinks she has found him but to her dismay he is married. After their breakup she is left with an unexpected gift. Maxine was raised by her grandmother who loved her unconditionally, because her mother chose heroin over her. When her mother becomes ill, Maxine has to put aside the past. Finally, there is Sydney; she is still in love with Anthony, her "Baby's Daddy" who has been absent for the past two years. Her undying love for him prevents her from establishing any other relationship. Also suffering is Sydney's relationship with her mother. Her mother was so distraught over Sydney's pregnancy and relationship with Anthony; she has not spoken to Sydney for two years, even though they see each other every Sunday at church.
This book could have benefited from good editing. There were problems with time frames that did not add up. The story was told in mostly dialogue, and this reader was often lost as to who was talking due to confusing point of view changes. There were also distracting typos. From chapter seventeen to the end of the book, the writing style changed and became much clearer when the author used narration and dialogue to convey the story. I commend my fellow Cass Tech alumni for her gumption to write and publish a novel which is a difficult task.

Clear & attractive pictures of the inside of a B-17.......1998-05-15
This book is a good look into the inside of a B17. If you have never been inside a B17, you could find your way around after looking at this book. The use of re-enactors in authentic uniforms help you understand what it might have been like to fly into combat during WWII. The accompanying pictures from WWII support the contemporary pictures well. The text provides enough useful information to understand and appreciate the B17 and the air war of the 40's.
Book Description
Who Leads Whom? is an ambitious study that addresses some of the most important questions in contemporary American politics: Do presidents pander to public opinion by backing popular policy measures that they believe would actually harm the country? Why do presidents "go public" with policy appeals? And do those appeals affect legislative outcomes?
Analyzing the actions of modern presidents ranging from Eisenhower to Clinton, Brandice Canes-Wrone demonstrates that presidents' involvement of the mass public, by putting pressure on Congress, shifts policy in the direction of majority opinion. More important, she also shows that presidents rarely cater to the mass citizenry unless they already agree with the public's preferred course of action. With contemporary politics so connected to the pulse of the American people, Who Leads Whom? offers much-needed insight into how public opinion actually works in our democratic process. Integrating perspectives from presidential studies, legislative politics, public opinion, and rational choice theory, this theoretical and empirical inquiry will appeal to a wide range of scholars of American political processes.
