Was the start of the conceptual form metalsmithing school.......2006-04-08

I have to say that this book isn't for everyone. It is for the person that enjoys learning some new info on things that one takes for granted. In conjuction with their avocation. Since it was published in 1978 some of the information at first glance may seem a rehash of the basics. That is far from the truth, The author does go over the things like the role of the formal shells, soldering,raising, planishing, layouts, tubing, hinges and linkages. In each of the sections or chapters he does go into things in somewhat more detail than the more modern books.Having been in metalsmithing off and on for over 40 years. Since high school I learned more from this book than I have from some classes I have taken over the years. The surface enrichment,refinement and finishing chapter and the one on the spout. Were of interest if for no other reason it pointed out things I never thought of in regards to the design of the opening in the spout. Having only made items with a spout for general shop work. No tea services ect. But the info will still work.
The art work is done by the author and are numerous. Since he was doing the drawing they reflect what he was thinking to a fine point. The pictures are in the style of the 70's brightly lit black and white. Each chapter has definitions of all things described. The glossary at the end of the book is illustrated with the drawings of the author ,the generic terminology,alternative terminology and etymological origins.
Having heard,and read all the artsy,2 dollars words thrown about by people that have no idea what they mean in relationship to the forms they are describing. It was a enjoyable read and I do own it.

Excellent source...........2003-02-18

This book, along with the Producer's Handbook, is tied at the top of my list! It is filled with excellent information on everything film related. From pre-production to post, you will find details on every single point of production and development. It introduces the novice to the world of production starting with crew position definitions, and at the same time it goes over many aspects that concern the professional filmmakers (like budgeting, scheduling, finding and bringing together a crew, a set, etc...). There are a considerable amount of forms and contracts/agreements that every filmmaker should know about, etc. It is truely a MUST if you seriously want to know what you're doing when it comes to filmmaking! This book is an A + + +!!

This book is gift from heaven for any AD or UPM. I had the old edition and thought it was great. But this edition is even better! There are explanations and checklists from Preproduction to Post. The CD-ROM has both Mac and PC files which are very comprehensive and well organized. Your whole AD Kit on 1 CD!! Best of all the price is within anyone's budget. I've worked in the field for 8 years. I've already recommended this book to 2 other people. They bought it and love it.

All ancient peoples have used chanting as a way of altering consciousness and putting themselves in touch with the Divine. The flowering of the chant was reached in the early 9th century when Pope Gregory the Great made a collection of Roman chants and

So full of errors I don't know where to begin.......2007-07-16

The pictures in this book are beautiful, the words in the book are so riddled with anti-Catholic non-truths that it makes one question the validity of anything that Mr. Shearing has to say. Early in the book he gives a 'history' of the Catholic faith that I believe he took straight from the pages of one of Dan Brown's novels. Some examples:
- Early Christians never believed that Jesus was divine
- Constantine founded the Roman Catholic Church and appointed it Popes
- The 'brothers' of Jesus started what became the Eastern Orthodox Church
- The Church was forced to adopt the idea that Jesus was divine to assuage the 'divine' Constantine.

The list goes on and on.

I am comforted in knowing that I bought this book used and did not support this anti-Catholic author with my purchase.

Catholics stay away.......2005-11-28

The book skims quickly the history of the Gregorian Chant, but a thorough investigation begs elsewhere. And Catholics are advised to stay away since it includes perspectives on other chants of varying religions and the author himself is a druid, having lost the straight path, lost in the dark woods. In addition, the CD compilations are without accompanying annotations making a study of them not possible and, alas, its selections, in my opinion, mediocre. Not worth the excursion.

Most of the content is on the Gregorian chants of the Catholic Church. But there is some material on the precedent of religious chanting in early and classical Mediterranean cultures, and also short sections on chanting in the world's other major religions. Gregorian chants getting their name from Pope Gregory of the late sixth century are regarded as the most mature development of Christian chanting. This Pope is "believed to be responsible for arranging the Gregorian chants which became the central pieces in religious services" with his historic reformation of Roman Catholic liturgy. Shearing puts the Gregorian chants in the context of the history of the Catholic Church, and discloses how spiritual and ecclesiastical concerns shaped them. Some technical, musicological, material on them is also included. This heavily illustrated relatively popular treatment of the chants is fortuitous considering their popularity on CDs, which takes them out of their religious context. The CD with this book contains 16 Gregorian chants. Shearing is a writer and lecturer who has traveled widely in pursuit of his spiritual interests.

Extremis in Excelsis.......2005-01-13

Take De Sade's "120 Days of Sodom", add a dash of George Bataille's "Madame Edwarda", "Blue of Noon", "The Dead Man" and garnish with the 'grand finale' of André Pieyre de Mandiargues "Portrait of an Englishman in his Chateau" and you have a rough idea of the bloodsport and delights to be found herein. (Don't forget your "Lobster Bib" and a Big Grin before you dig in!). Positively 'lip-smacking' !

Perversity seen in a new extreme.......2004-02-10

Throughout this rather short book there are several sequences that manage to outdo De Sade in not the depravity but the relish taken by Aldapuerta, there exists no quick death or brief respites to look away from the carnage enacted here; what we view (not read, for Aldapuerta draws in such a way that the image becomes near crystle clear) is pure, unexpurgated violence enacted on the human being with with no drama or any other frivolities to cushen the blow.

The book is quite worth looking into if you're searching for a new extreme or just simply a fan of Counter-Culture or Subversive literature as a whole. And it is quite re-readable.

I noticed that some of the links and such on this page are for children's interests. THIS IS NOT A CHILDREN'S BOOK WHAT SO EVER. I warn anyone daring to read this book: Necrophilia, coprophilia, & extreme violence are among only a few of the atrocities written by the author: a necrophilac himself; a criminal; murderer; but, above all, or maybe rightfully esteemed along with it, a brilliant writer.

This is an excellent book for diabetics, no matter what type. Gives hints to control diabetes, importance of testing, controlling stress, things to look out for, complications. Dr. Juliano writes a compelling book on the disease and give pointers on how to live a normal, healthy life, without complications. I am diabetic, and highly recommend this book. I hope too, that Dr. Juliano re-issues this book. It is a keeper.

Enigmatic Intellectual History .......2007-08-08

This book won the Bancroft Prize. I can see why. The prose is inspirational, every paragraph a little jewel. The book is absorbing. It was easy for me to get lost in the prose, too easy. But where was this book going, generally? How did the chapters tie together? How does the concept of the destructive war fit into the intellectual patterns of pre- and anti-bellum history? I can't answer these questions and I would hope that no one would ask me this last question on a Ph.D. prelim. I can draw only one conclusion: there was no connection. This was the first modern war in terms of its destructive power. One out of every five who participated, died on the field or, even more horribly, of his wounds, lilke Stone Wall Jackson. The intellectual origins of American politics became uprooted and found no voice in this war. The Jacksonian themes that built on that tradition were mangled by the war. All that was left was the vicarious war: people of all classes struggling to relate to the war in every day language in any way they could. And once the killing stopped and reconstruction began, the destructive war and the vicarious war ended. No one learned anything. Is that the main message of this book? I wish Royster had written it down in black and white.

Necessary Heresy.......2005-10-21

While focusing on the deeper causes of the civil war and their play-out on battlefields, Royster rips the lid off one of the most cherished American dogmas: the assumed sacrosanct value of the press. Royster's deep and thorough quotation from newspapers north and south, for decades preceding the war, lays bare a legacy of mutual hate encouraged by newspapers as they whipped their respective constituents up to a frenzy. The horror of "total war" and its major military proponents, in that context, is not only quite explicable but even ordinary -- even tame. The generals are, indeed, seen as essentially loyal ministers to a vast malaise primarily spiritual and psychic, which was hardly original to them, and which has been allowed to fester in this nation for a long time, and which to a degree poisoned populations both north and south before the war.

This is therefore one of the few major books on American history either to take up an original thesis, or to forward one so counter to accepted thinking. You can like it or dislike it, curse it or scream "ouch," but the evidence is there, meticulously laid out. The fact is, Royster throws great and uneasy light on our present culture wars which are also now several decades running -- and flamed in a quite similar manner.

In the meantime, Royster's descriptions of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain and the burning of Columbia are matchless.

This book leaves all James McPhersons, all Ken Burnses, all Stephen Ambroses, and all similar gurus at the post -- mere babes. No, this is not to say he is some sort of Michael Moore hate America nut, either. He's more on the level of a Tacitus, frankly, or an Isaiah weeping at the gates. Read it and weep.

One of the greatest books I've ever read!.......2003-01-03

This is a brilliantly labyrinthine disquisition on the American Civil War. Royster's premise is the examination of the wars' scale of destruction, and the surprising extent of its violence, developed out of biographical sketches of Sherman and Jackson, who Royster believes best personify the Union and the Confederacy. Further, Royster sees the devastation of the Civil War as incipient in the antebellum period. The Destructive War is interpretive as well as critical, literary as well as historical, dealing as much with the idea of war as the facts themselves. Indeed, the author terms his work " a long essay."

Royster depicts the Civil War as-primarily-aggresive, anomalous, vicarious, and as the title suggests, destructive. The Confederacy sought aggressive war to achieve quick legitimacy, its viability depending on the ability not only to wage war, but also to take that war north of the Potomac, make the Yankees feel its effects, and thereby convince them that the costs of prolonged combat would be far too dear. Royster argues that the Union pursued aggresive war, ultimately, to bring progress to the South and demonstrate the superiority of free labor over slave labor, by razing the Confederacy to its foundations and then rebuilding it in the North's own image.

For Royster no one better epitomizes the Confederacy than Thomas Jonathon Jackson, better known by his sobriquet Stonewall, which Royster asserts, reflected a self-created persona. Jackson's Stonewall was an inelegant fusion of plodding resolve, frustrated (if not checked) ambition, and intense piety, smacking of both Calvinism and Arminianism, all funneled into a zealous devotion to duty. His untimely death at Chancellorsville gave birth to the Stonewall myth-patriotic Christian warrior-providing tantalizing 'what if' grist for the counterfactual mill of post hoc Confederate nation building. An advocate of "the tactical offensive in battle" Jackson is certain the Civil War will be "earnest,massed, and lethal."

The essence of the Union, according to Royster, can be found in William Tecumseh Sherman. Alarmed by Confederate strength and resolve, Sherman presciently observed that tactical defensive warfare would be woefully insufficient in what he believed would be a long and costly war. Egged on by newspapers ravenous for victory on the cheap, and deferring to troops already engaged in wanton mayhem, Sherman embraced, then embodied, that which he originally resisted: total war.

Royster includes subsidiary characterizations of the war as drastic, Republican, and vigorous. Drastic war knows no limits in the pursuit of emancipation and abolition. Republican war means "Emergency war powers" and "passionate nationalism" which will create "a new republic, purged of antebellum evils and backwardness." Vigorous war is possible because of the "widespread eagerness to be exonerated of the criminality attached to bloodshed." Auxiliary adjectives such as harsh, bitter, ineluctable and causeless are employed to complete the illustration. In the book's chapter on vicarious war the author asks, "How had the naive notions prevalent at the start given way so readily to killing on a scale supposedly unimaginable?" This single question is the essence of Royster's work.

A Good Source of Civil War Information.......2002-12-05

The book The Destructive War by Charles Royster, examines the war policies and strategies of the Union and the Confederacy during the civil war. The book talks extensively about Confederate general Jackson and Union General Sherman.

At the beginning of the war the Union did not attack citizens or their property. The Union did not destroy any property of the citizens of the Confederacy because they anticipated winning the war. They realized that if they won the war it would be their responsibility to help the south rebuild. They also thought of the south and the people of the south as Americans despite labeling them traitors. But despite the reluctance on the part of Union Generals to damage citizen's property it eventually became policy. This change in policy came about because, "northern expressions of support for intensified war-making assumed that the Confederate army was an instrument of the Southern populace and that the populace was a legitimate object of attack," (Royster, 81). Women were also subject to attack. Union soldiers attacked women because "in the conventions of the time, women were supposed to use their power to ennoble and civilize-whereas, Southern women, it seemed, were serving what Elizabeth Cady Stanton called "mere pride of race and class." By promoting war against the union and by showing their hatred of Federal soldiers, they imitated Lady Macbeth and "unsexed themselves to prove their scorn of `the Yankees'." Thus they forfeited their exemption as ladies and noncombatants," (Royster, 87). Confederates did not share this policy. They always were proud that when Lee invaded Pennsylvania in 1863 that he gave an order that soldiers were not to damage citizen's property or plunder it.

The book also talks about General William Tecumseh Sherman. Sherman was a southerner who chose to stay in the Union. "He shared (southern) distaste for abolitionist and for Northern politicians who made hostility to slaveholders a political platform. Still, he told Louisianans that secession was treason and that he would not collaborate with it by remaining in the state," (Royster, 90). He hoped to stay out of the war but eventually he joined the Union army. He participated in the battle of Bull Run and blamed the "defeat on the inexperience and panic of the privates," (Royster, 92). He was the senior commander of central and western Kentucky in 1861, despite his desire not to be in charge. He was dismissed of command of the area and rumors spread that he was insane. He eventually led campaigns down the Mississippi River and captured Atlanta. He became famous for his destructive marches through the south.

General Thomas Jonathan Jackson or Stonewall Jackson was a very famous and effective Confederate General. Everyone even Northerners considered Jackson a "genuine general," (Royster, 42). Jackson on many occasions outmatched many Union Generals on the battlefield. He died on the battlefield on May 2, 1863 from friendly fire. Many Confederate Generals including Lee thought that if Jackson had not died that they would have won the war. After the war Jackson came to symbolize many things after the war. He epitomized the courageous and skilled Confederate soldier. He also represented a model "to all the men especially ambitious and aspiring youths, that the self-control and assiduous application he had become a self-made man," (Royster, 162).

The civil war was "an interior struggle in the (Confederacy and Union), an effort to make the newly forming conceptions of nationality inclusive lasting while they were still controversial and nebulous," (Royster, 145). Both sides believed that the best way to validate their idea of the nation is to destroy the other side's army. The Confederacy thought the best way to establish itself as an independent nation would be to deliver to the north a decisive defeat on their soil. General Stonewall Jackson gave the south many victories against the Union and came to be one of the most famous Generals in the war. The Union thought one of the best ways to bring the Confederacy to its knees would be to attack Confederate citizens. General Sherman was famous for his invasion into the south, wrecking havoc on the Confederate citizens.

I had to read this book for my Civil War class. I thought that the book was a valuable source of civil war information. However Royster repeated himself several times in the book. The book also jumped alot from subject to subject. The chapters did not flow into each other; they tended to skip from idea to idea. Despite this it was full of very detailed information.

A new way to examine the destructive war.......2001-03-30

Royster's "The Destructive War" is one of the most important works of Civil War Scholarship in the 1990's. He blends a sweeping narrative with extensive analysis to explain the development of "total war" and its effects on Americans. What will really engage the reader is not so much Royster's examinations of General William Sherman's actions and those of his men, but rather the ideas of Stonewall Jackson and the calls for the destruction of Northern cities that they elicit from the Confederacy, a nation that was supposedly only wanted to fight a defensive war. While Royster's argument is not without some structural flaws, it makes some very interesting points about Confederate war aims and the willingness of populations and troops of both sides to destroy the cities of their former bretheren. I've read this book twice for graduate level classes and each time a lively discussion has been generated. An excellent book.

Setting the Record Straight.......2007-06-23

As a retired U.S. Army Special Forces Green Beret and a graduate student in Terrorism and Counterterrorism Studies, I would like to correct two inaccuracies in Mr. Sperry's book:

1. On page 208 he states that, "Sgt Ali Mohamed joined the U.S. military and the next year, rising to the position of sergeant with the Army's Special Forces..."

2. On page 209 he states that, " The Green Beret now sits in prison."

To set the record straight, Ali Mohamed was not a Special Forces GREEN BERET! Ali Mohamed was assigned to a Special Forces unit and served as a "supply clerk" (and later as an instructor) in a support capacity only.

In order to qualify as a Special Forces Green Beret (to wear the green beret and the Special Forces Tab), one must successfully complete all required Special Forces training leading up to and including the Special Forces Qualification Course (Q-Course). Ali Mohamed never received any such training and never attended or graduated from the Special Forces Q-Course. Moreover, upon completion of the Q-Course, a Special Forces Green Beret is awarded a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) identifier of 18 Series (e.g. 18A, 18E, 18D, 18C, 18B) Special Forces Warrant Officers hold the MOS of 180A. Ali Mohamed never held any of these MOSs.

This may seem like a small point, but I can assure you that to those of us who have earned the Green Beret it is not.

(p. xi) In the tradition of old-fashion journalism, this book names names and gives facts and figures, quotes exactly the passages you need to know.

The first Part gives the particulars on the "politically correct suicide" guiding American Democrat AND Republican policies at the present time, and how Islamists are using American institutions to undermine America.

Part II points out exactly where and how the Islamists have infiltrated the U. S. government. Part III details the role of the Islamic religious institutions in furthering terrorism. Part IV gives you the full story of Islamic infiltration of U. S. law enforcement, particularly the FBI.

The fifth Part provides some surprising information of Islamic infiltration of the U. S. military. Part VI details the infiltration of corporations. The last Part gives specific information about Islamic influence at the White House and the Department of Homeland "Insecurity".

The book, of course, does not try to cover everything you need to know about the Islamic threat; and significantly, it does not attempt to provide any solutions or to tell you why the common-sense and obvious solutions that come to mind will not be adopted. The whole mind-set that forms the foundation for all these problems is not delved into. INFILTRATION: WAKE UP AMERICA.......2007-03-12

When one ponders the concept of "infiltration," you think of someone who surreptiously enters a protected zone in order to extract highly-sensitive information, and then utilizes that intelligence to achieve the demise of its targeted enemy.

Paul Sperry's brilliant expose provides first-class insight into the undercover operations of America's most malevolent enemy: Islamists [defenders of the Quran] who have solemnly pledged to overthrow our Constitutional Republic, and replace it with an Islamic theocracy.

Following the horrendous slaughter on "9/11," you would have wagered that our President would have directed a spirited campaign to identify, deter, prevent and defeat a determined enemy. Instead, Sperry's investigative account reveals gross direlection of duty from President Bush to Congress to key governmental agencies. No one is exempt from Sperry's scrutiny! No one!

Because of today's climate of "political correctness" and "tolerance" for educational, cultural, religious and governmental diversity - our nationally-elected leaders are frozen-in-place; unwilling to act on behalf of America; and willfully refusing to protect our culture, borders and language!

Sperry's "Infiltration" outlines incredible incompetence at all levels and on massive scales! He identifies and substantiates integral parties, both Islamic and domestic, who have compromised America's grand design for perfecting a "Democratic-Republic."

As you read this detailed account, try to chronicle all the obvious patterns and then correlate them to the high-tech abilities of the CIA, NSA, FBI, etc... And you will ask yourself one question: "If I can see the goal of these religious fanatics, then why can't our leaders?" Your answer will be simple: "They see everything, but refuse to do anything!"

Sperry's "Infiltration" paves a somber but realistic picture; America must sustain another "9/11" before it rises from decades of slumber to conquer the true infidel: "Islamists who are deceived by historical delusions, and yet believe that Allah jumps for joy at the premeditated slaying of just one innocent child who knows neither right from wrong." This is the perfect enemy!

What is the solution? It does not rest in the Presidency! It does not reside in Congress, DOD, CIA, FBI, NSA nor in any other useless bureucracy! The final answer lies within the hearts of everyday citizens who rise up in righteous anger; collectively mounting their genuine concerns for the future of our Republic; and then confronting ALL national politicians until America is protected from foreign invasion, and is restored to its former greatness. I wonder? Who is game?

How the astrophysical problem-solving process works.......2006-11-10

I found this book enjoyable and easy to read. I personally have a pretty strong background in astrophysics, but I think the typical amateur astronomy enthusiast wouldn't have any difficulty with this material. The book tells the story of the discovery and elucidation of SS433, a binary star system with a compact stellar remnant (neutron star?) and close-orbiting companion star which is being sucked into it. Its physical properties are remarkable. At the time, and still as far as I know, it was the only object of its type.

The object itself is interesting enough, but what I found most interesting is how the story of SS433 is told chronologically. We are shown how the scientific process works, the pace of discovery, and its dual collaberative and competitive nature.
