Book Description

Published to coincide with the grand opening of Grant Wood's studio at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art in Iowa, this in-depth exploration of the artist's most fruitful period brings together some of his best-known paintings and rarely seen decorative art works. The modest nineteenth-century red brick carriage house in a small Midwestern city offers no indication that it once housed one of America's most revered artists. But step inside the doors of 5 Turner Alley and discover a space which exudes the essence of American utility, simplicity and inventiveness that distinguishes Wood's work.

By carefully tracing the development of Wood's work, from his decorative interiors and objects designed for his studio to his most famous paintings, such as American Gothic, this exquisitely produced volume provides new clues to Wood's success as a painter, craftsman and designer. Thoughtful essays examine how Wood's drawings and paintings, alongside his work in metal, wood, and interior design, together best represent the culmination of his personal experience as well as his taste and sense of humor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Grant Wood.......2006-03-12

For an in-depth survey of Grant Wood's works, choose GRANT WOOD'S STUDIO: BIRTHPLACE OF AMERICAN GOTHIC. Numerous contributors enhance details on both his better-known and lesser-known works, enhancing some 98 color photos with a historic background pinpointing his success as a painter and designer. The object here is two-fold: to gather and contrast both well known and more obscure works for a fuller representation of his talents, and to capture his intentions and achievements: a successful catalog of his works results, recommended for any serious Grant Woods collection or college-level art library.

                Book Description

Version began as an artist's group under the name Super Us, and has become an adventurous magazine. In this special issue, the 70 artists invited to create black-and-white coloring book pages comply with verve. Their goal is to "unteach," to offer a new view of the world, at once clean-lined and non-linear. In the process they strip their own work to its elements and, perhaps most importantly, provide a way for both children and adults to step into the artistic process, to discover, complete, and collaborate with each artist, creating and inventing on their own along the way. Includes coloring pages by Liam Gillick, Claude Closky and Lawrence Weiner. For children of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book and essential for all Maya programming.......2007-10-02

I search the information about programming in Maya for weeks. This book is essential for maya programming (MEL and C++ API) and I only find it about this theme.

I recommend buy the volume II (Complete Maya Programming, Vol. II: An In-Depth Guide to 3D Fundamentals, Geometry, and Modeling ) and is great book too. If you going to buy this book, read after the second volume.

                            Excuse my english.

2 out of 5 stars Complete Maya Programming.......2006-12-03

You can indeed learn more by pressing F1 on Maya itself. The C++ API part (the one I was interested in) is really short and the examples rather simple (you can read it all in few hours).

The book is ok, but should be called "Very Basic Introduction to MEL and C++ API" and not "An extensive guide to MEL and C++ API" at all.

4 out of 5 stars Great buy to get you started scripting.......2005-09-06

Good book. The only book I know of that explains everything in a way that's easily understood, especially if you don't have any programming experience. This book isn't the only book you'd need to get proficient at programming, but it definately is the first one you should buy to get yourself started.

Its a bit thick at points, so I recommend not sitting down to read a large chunk at once, cause it'll likely not stick with you that way. Take your time, and have your computer nearby so that you can type in his examples and see how they work. Kinda wish it came with a CD but he gives you a website to download his examples.

In short, buy this book if MEL scripting intimidates you like it did me. It'll make the whole process less daunting, and you'll be scripting before you know it.

                            3 out of 5 stars Average.......2005-05-23

Covers very basic material- most of which could be read from the Maya API help anyway. What I was expecting was a book written in the "Game programming GEMS" style, where multiple case studies are taken up and solved using MEL (as in Stripnis's book) or MAYA API. What we get is some simple examples, better resources can be found on the web. The API section is written better than the MEL section. This opinion is from a programmers standpoint, artists impression may differ.

The Two Of Us says all the things you have wanted to say to the woman who has been such an important part of your life. The two of us...share so much in common: genes (and maybe jeans), a certain expression, a way of doing things, family memories. The two of us...may not always see eye to eye, but we can always speak heart to heart. Mothers and daughters will smile in recognition at the funny, honest sentiments, secrets, confessions, and tender moments captured in this heartwarming gift book.

I have got to say that this is one of the best books that I have ever received. My daughter bought it for me as a Christmas gift, and I bought her one to. We found so many things that we have in common written in this book, it's almost like the author knew us. It's a great book and I would highly recommend it to those Mother and Daughter's who have a close, special relationship.

4 out of 5 stars GI Bill Indepth.......2001-12-07

Michael Bennett's When Dreams Come True is a great in-depth study of the history around the creation of the Serviceman's Readjustment Act of 1944. He includes a great historical look at the support (or lack of support) that veterans received prior to World War 2 and then continued with a detailed study of the political process that ultimately led to the creation of the GI Bill.
The book is easy to read, but very detail in nature. Those looking for a quick, general read might look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars An insightful, informed, inspiring story of the GI Bill........1999-03-07

Bennett set twin goals for himself: " . . . to make scholars realize how significant the GI Bill was in shaping American society over the past fifty years, and to tell a great story for not only those who benefited from the bill but also their children and grandchildren". Bennett chose the right target audience and he masterfully achieved his two goals.

As the war was nearing its end, America's leaders began to contemplate the domestic challenges that peace would bring. GI Joe would be leaving the battlefields of Europe and the beaches of the Pacific. He fully intended to cast off the chains of the depression and regain his rightful place on the assembly line, at the check out, in the classroom, and behind the plow.

Many in the Administration and Congress recognized that this transition might not be an easy one. Years of global conflict had already altered America. GI Joe had marched off to war in the aftermath of the Great Depression. Pre-war America was predominantly agrarian, isolationist, and rural. Post-war America was victorious, increasingly industrial, worldly, and urban. The post war changes in the U.S. would be dramatic. When Dreams Came True details the pivotal role that the GI Bill played in that metamorphosis.

Bennett relates the tortuous path of the act from inception to enactment. The American Legion, editor Walter Howey, publisher William Randolph Hurst, Representatives Edith Rogers and John Rankin, and Senator Bennett Clark, were unlikely companions on the road to passage of the GI Bill. Thanks to Representative John Gibson's tie breaking vote, the language that became the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 emerged from a near-deadlocked House-Senate committee almost in step with the relentless troop movement inland from the Normandy beaches.

Two aspects of the GI Bill sculpted the most dramatic changes to the face of America. Bennett claims that the bill's educational benefits and home ownership provisions were largely responsible for the birth of the American middle-class way of life. He makes a compelling case.

Veterans in the millions-many who had never dreamed of higher education-flocked to the nation's colleges and universities. This flood was both unprecedented and unexpected. Pre-war, a college education was generally the province of the country's elite. There were just under 213,500 college degrees conferred in 1942. That number rose steadily in the decade after the war and stood at just under 455,000 by 1951. The GI Bill of Rights made it possible for many returnees to select higher education in lieu of immediately joining the labor market. Thousands of veterans chose formal education-and many elected to attend the better-quality schools.

The GI Bill's home loan guarantees for veterans also significantly altered the American scene. There was more involved than merely home ownership. During the war veterans had learned to live side-by-side with people from different backgrounds. Veteran's mortgage benefits nourished the rise of a diverse suburbia and contributed to the reduction of the pre-war ethnic, religious, and racial enclaves. Veterans did not simply choose to buy vice rent. They chose a "way of life" that broke free from the class conscious boundaries that had distinguished their parents. This burgeoning middle class also served as a catalyst for more pervasive social change.

When my father returned from WW II, he took advantage of many provisions of the GI Bill. After Vietnam, I used my GI Bill eligibility to purchase my first home and pursue my initial degree. But we never understood the birthing pains that produced the law that provided these benefits. Passage of the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 was a marvelous accomplishment and one of which I had little appreciation.

Bennett relates history with an easily readable style. This is not a text. It is a "story" of America's transformation in the decades following WW II. Michael Bennett weaves a powerful and interesting tale. It is a fitting tribute to those who fought. I recommend it to all the GI Joes and those they sired. When Dreams Came True can help all every American appreciate the magnitude of change that our country has witnessed in the latter half of the 20th Century.

                                  Book Description

Al Franken was a "nobody" in the arena of political punditry before he wrote two best-selling books, Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them. Now one of the most prominent figures on the liberal Air America radio network, formed to counter the mostly conservative voice of mainstream talk radio, he consistently boasts "I tell the truth" and "I hold myself to an impossibly high standard when it comes to telling the truth."

Until now, says Alan Skorski, Franken's continuous smears against his enemies while promoting himself as the "ultimate truth teller" have gone unchallenged by the mainstream media. Surprisingly, even conservative or right-leaning media have not challenged the falsity of much of what he says, although Franken does not define what he believes is a lie, except to say that conservatives "get away with it." In contrast, Skorski defines a lie as "intentionally telling an untruth with the purpose of trying to cover up or get away with something," which he then accuses Franken of doing with impunity.

Alan Skorski has researched the facts regarding the allegations in Franken's last two books, monitored his daily radio show, spoken with people cited and referenced in Franken's books, and exchanged approximately 30 e-mails with Franken in order to provide readers with an accurate insight into how Franken thinks and operates. What Skorski finds is something very different from what Franken claims, and he concludes that, unlike many of the petty "lies" Franken writes about in his books—whether Bill O'Reilly's Inside Edition show won a Peabody or a Polk award or whether Ann Coulter said that she and Franken were "friendly"—...Pants on Fire reveals that Franken himself regularly lies, smears, and distorts what others say and do, ultimately discrediting himself as a "truth teller."

Indeed, according to Skorski, while Franken has called many people—from Rush Limbaugh and Brit Hume to President Bush—a "liar," "hypocrite," "cheater," "lazy," "shameless," and/or "dishonest," ...Pants on Fire amply illustrates not only that many of his claims are false but that Franken employs the very tactics he accuses the right of using.

This fish wrap was a waste of time and money. Most of the alleged "lies" were not lies at all but appeared to be the author's "take" on things. Save your money and buy one of Al Franken's books. Just my advice.

I had to give this book a chance, so i borrowed a copy from a friend of mine who, for some strange reason, thought buying this was a good idea.

I believe there is a severe mental condition that is going around in America. People who are so afraid to think, so allergic to facts and information, actually go out attacking those who are the most credible.

Mr. Franken is a comedian. But his books have no inaccuracies. Leave it to a comedian to do thorough research I guess. In his three most popular books, he illustrates in detail how the "liars" lie, and what the lies are.

In this book, the author actually shows his own ignorance. But beyond just being somewhat ignorant, the author also reveals the obsession of hating facts. Many times in the book the author makes AL'S OWN POINT. Other times, the author just states a lie over and over to try to magically make it become true.

Does anyone care about truth any more? I dont think so. And anyone who would give this book above a "one star" rating, needs to get their head examined.

AS FOR THE PEABODY issue- not only did Bill lie, but he expanded the lie. He then claimed he never said the lie. Then he repeated the lie AGAIN. when confronted at the book expo, on the same stage with Franken, he lied again about lying. Then went on his show, and lied about lying about lying. And this man is still employed in the US. oh well.

1 out of 5 stars IF THIS IS THE RIGHT'S BEST SHOT, THEY'RE IN TROUBLE.......2006-07-07

All these bombardments from Franken, and no response from the Right - mostly because Al's research is so diligent - until now. And this is the best the Right can do? Bottom line: Skorski is an angry, petulant, 2nd Grader debating a Political Professor Emeritus. He is not Franken's intellectual equal. And yes, I have read the book.

Skorski has the gall to print a Department of Labor graph that he can't even read; any moron who can add can see that the numbers prove Franken's point about minimum wages. Skorski says it proves the opposite, after admitting that he can't follow the graph. Then there's his coup de grace: Franken (correctly) caught O'Reilly in a falsehood when Bill said he and his show (Inside Edition) won a Peabody award, and then lied about saying it. Skorski's defense: Franken accused O'Reilly of lying about winning the award HIMSELF, when Bill was really only lying about THE SHOW winning the award. Are you getting a feel for the level of analytical thinking here?

If you want the truth, this book is a complete waste of time.

This is actually an interesting book. I'm a liberal and a Democrat, and I read this book not to be convinced about a variety of minor points but to try to figure out where some of us Democrats are going wrong when we take on the conservatives.

Well, there are plenty of Democrats who make some rather tame policy statements. And there are some who go beyond that to denounce some rather misleading comments and implications by conservatives. Whether that's a good idea or not, I'm sure that some of the denunciations are going to do more harm than good: if the comments are clearly off-target, they cast doubt on the whole liberal argument.

I do feel that the administration mishandled the war against Iraq. And I sure was fooled when Colin Powell told us about the Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. Until then, I hoped we could avoid (or at least postpone) an invasion of Iraq, keeping our military options more open. But he convinced me that an immediate war might make sense. I bet he fooled far more folks than just me.

I see every reason for us liberals to complain about being fooled like that! But Skorski has shown me that we need to be careful about what we say if we want to achieve something useful. If we seem to be slamming America as a terrorist nation for all this, we're going to come across as dishonest and unreasonable at best. And that is no way to make progress in the fight against bias and lies!

Another issue is that of the "liberal media." Now, any of us who have witnessed the past few election campaigns must have noticed that a majority of the mainstream media folks openly favored the Democratic candidates for President. But did this translate into much media help to those candidates? I simply don't know, as much of the anecdotal material in the campaign seemed to put Democratic candidates in a poor light. I think the dominant problem is a media that has abandoned journalistic standards. Skorski easily finds some evidence that the media have behaved badly, but this is simply shooting fish in a barrel, and I think the problem goes beyond media bias.

I found the issue of tolerance and diversity on American campuses interesting as well. We can find plenty of liberals on most of our best college campuses. And I think we need to make it clear that we're happy to give conservatives (even though Republicans have a majority in Congress, the executive, and seemingly even the Supreme Court) their say. Otherwise, we'll find it hard to make our points when we preach to anyone outside of our own, um, choir.

A big problem for us liberals is that we sometimes feel we need to choose between what seems best for our country at the moment and what we feel is the best long-range choice for the world. If we take one side, we may look like conservatives or reactionaries. If we take the other side, we may look like traitors. And Skorski shows some cases where those who ought to have been engaging in honest deliberation about America's foreign policy options wound up looking flatly hostile to America and American interests, with little if anything to redeem such an attitude. I think readers of this book may learn something here.

The author has an interesting section about Michael Moore's movie, Fahrenheit 9/11. He appears to ask about the extent to which it includes speculation on American complicity in the attacks. And he contrasts all this with movies about Pearl Harbor. After all, our administration (as well as much of our nation) knew that there was a risk of war with Japan. But we don't go overboard with speculations that the administration was pretty much aware that Pearl Harbor would be attacked yet failed to do anything about it! I think it is reasonable for Skorski to ask that we do the same about 9/11. Obviously, we made plenty of mistakes that led to this disaster. But we ought to be responsible and honest in discussing them. If Moore refuses to be responsible, I think we liberals ought to find folks who will do a better job. I don't want his voice to be the only Democratic one out there on this issue!

Skorski quotes Franken as saying that he's really angry at Yasser Arafat, because Arafat gave "us" Ariel Sharon. I think that's just one more area where we Democrats need to try to avoid outlandish and credibility-busting remarks. Arafat was worth opposing (and being angry at) because he was a thug who gave orders (which were obeyed) to kill large numbers of civilians. Yes, had there been no war by Arafat, Israel might have had some other leader, but so what? Are we mad at the German leaders primarily because they gave "us" Churchill in World War Two? By the way, such comments open us up to remarks (which Skorski in fact makes) about Arafat being invited on a huge number of occasions to the Clinton White House. That was a moral error, and probably a political error as well. Why compound it?

There are also comments about why we Democrats have lost some Presidential elections. And I have to agree that, for example, Gore probably lost more votes than he gained by walking up to Bush during a Presidential debate. These things happen. But it's worth remembering these tidbits, just in case one is tempted to repeat such errors on purpose.

I know that most reviewers of this book are simply judging it on its political merits. But I'll give it three stars even though I disagree with most of its politics. I think Skorski makes some good points, and I think that it is useful to see how non-liberals may react to a few of the things that some of us say.
