Book Description
Milton Caniff's legendary comic strip finds a new home in these Checker collections. Steve Canyon 1951 collects strips from January 1951 to spring 1952, which includes the stories "The Mysterious Monsieur Gros," "Operation Foo-Ling," "The Duchess of Denver" and "Operation Eel Island."
Customer Reviews:
The fifth year in the Canyon series.......2007-03-05
After four volumes and now this, the fifth, in the Steve Canyon series, it is a pleasure to come back to this now familiar strip. The 750+ pages I have read so far have put Caniff's exotic and far flung creations firmly in my head. At 2½ pages per week, Canyon's 41-year run would come to 5,300 pages, if Checker should make it that far. This might take another dozen years at three books per year.
Buying this series is doubly rewarded: over and above the enjoyment these strips provide, there is the encouragement publishers will get to continue bringing forth the wonderful fruit of the Ninth Art from the highly fertile period stretching from the early 1900s through the 1960s. Should we get full runs of Polly and Her Pals, the Krazy Kat dailies*, Connie, Casey Ruggles, Voltar and other premium comics, then we will be very fortunate indeed. Maybe I should deem the Steve Canyon books "graphic novels" - that confers some respectability, doesn't it? But it's the contents that count, not the label. (No, I'm not a shill for the publisher...)
An interesting daily strip phenomenon is the twin passage of time: the reader's and the characters'. In the previous volume, there is a three-month period of strips covering one to three days of action, followed by a "meanwhile", where more months of strips cover concurrent action with other characters elsewhere. Yet, the seasons in the strips are concurrent with those experienced by the reader. As a result, the characters can experience three weeks' life between two Christmases! Well, what you gonna do...
Apart from the ridiculous Eel Island segment, the adventures in this issue are good, with the last (which is actually two stories over a five-month period) providing us with a superb ending.
*The Sunday Krazy Kat pages are available at Amazon, courtesy Fantagraphics. I have the color editions and they are superb.
Book Description
In Hollywood Hoofbeats, author Petrine Day Mitchum tells stories in page-turning detail, covering topics such as behind-the-scenes portraits of both famous movie horses and those virtually unknown; personal accounts from their trainers, owners, and costars; simple and complex horse stunts, from a fall in mid-gallop to a race across a bridge during a live explosion; and historic black-and-white photos and richly colored contemporary stills.
Customer Reviews:
Great hardback book, nice photos great text.......2007-08-23
More than I expected. Informative, great pictures, good text. Nice hardback book. A great deal for the $$$.
Hollywood Hoofbeats: Trails Blazed Across the Silver Screen.......2007-01-05
I purchased two editions of this book. One for my Husband who is a western movie buff and the other for our adult son who is in the horse business and knows many of the people in the book. Both spent half of Christmas day perusing their books and discussing many of the old and current horse trainers.
Words Can't Do It Justice.......2006-03-13
Reading the review/description on Amazon I rapidly came to the conclusion that words can never do this book justice; it's just too incredible. This is a beautiful and very informative coffee table book with exceptional photographs and movie poster art. Although it does not include information on every horse movie it does an amazing job on most films from the start of motion pictures to things like "Spirit," "Lord of the Rings," and "Hildalgo." Ms. Mitchum spent a ton of time interviewing the top stunt riders and horse trainers in Hollywood and it shows - every page is filled with insightful stories about filming, training, and actors. Well worth the cover price, you won't want to put it down!

Book Description
The essence of this book is to assist educators to improve eduational practice in the constantly changing cultural contexts of school and society. Cross cultural dimensions such as diversity; uniformity; individualism, and collectivism emerge as key focus areas of discussion. Where possible, bridges are built between relevant cross cultural research on one hand, and its impact on improving learning/teaching, assessment, school and classroom management, schooling and the community on the other. The bridge building is also extended to the methods of how teachers may be trained to meet the challenges of cultural diversity in multicultural classrooms.
The approach of this book is to provide a selective review of relevant research into cross cultural areas and to provide practical suggestions of how this research may improve activities such as teaching and learning. Much use is made of the case study material from both developing and developed societies, and the experience gained by the author of working as a teach educator in Britain and many Asian and African countries. In addition there are case study exemplars from Australia, USA and some Latin American countries, eg Peru and Brazil.
Culture and Schooling: Building Bridges Between Research, Praxis and Professionalism is an essential reseource for Cross Cultural and Educational Psychologists, Teachers, Education Professionals, Child Guidance Specialists and Child Care Professionals working in the classroom environment.

Book Description
Things are running smoothly in the village for Mamboleo until certain changes begin to take place as the village is getting developed. To Mamboleo, development, as it is explained to him, is simply confusion. He doesn't accept any of the proposals the local divisional officer, Mr. Njuguna, makes as a move to improve life for the villagers. Mamboleo has a rude experience at the health department in the name of treatment, a matter he is not willing to forget. With his son Sumba away from home for many years because of school and the loss of his herd, Mamboleo has had enough and he is determined to fight this so-called development which, to his dismay, has been embraced even by his own sister Amboko.

Book Description
With the growl of the Marine sergeant he was, Senator Zell Miller leaves no doubt that he believes his own Democratic Party is badly out of step with most of the country and needs to shape up or ship out.
As part of a stinging critique of the Democratic Party, Miller outlines key positions on important issues that can again make the party relevant for the entire nation. From tax cuts to welfare, gun control to the environment, the arts to education, immigration to terrorism, Miller identifies values that make sense to a growing majority of Americans.
Miller's candid analysis of the campaigns of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton further underscores his conclusion that the Democratic Party can no longer field a serious presidential challenge.
Many party loyalists will not like what Senator Miller writes; yet his credentials are beyond question, for few Democrats have worked longer or stronger for the party and its candidates. Zell Miller has served in an elective office in each of the last six decades. When he left office as governor after two terms, he had an 85 percent approval rating, prompting the Washington Post to call him the most popular governor in the country. After getting to Washington, he became President Bush's biggest Democratic supporter, but steadfastly refused to switch parties.
A National Party No More is a firsthand account from the enigmatic senator who has confounded his Democratic colleagues. Driven by conscience and common sense, Senator Miller names the self-destructive direction of his party and stubbornly pulls the Democratic family toward reform.
Customer Reviews:
Not Afraid to Speak His Mind.......2007-07-30
Regardless of what one thinks of Zell Miller, no one can argue that he's not afraid to speak his mind regardless of the toes he steps on!
Senator Miller clearly states that the Democratic Party, once a great party of the people, has now become the puppet of elitist special interest groups. Indeed, when one remembers how Harry Truman and John Kennedy would compare to today's Democrats, Miller hits the nail on the head.
In the title Miller covers:
1. His days growing up in the Georgia mountains and the importance of family.
2. Days in the Marine Corps.
3. Running for both local and state offices.
4. Days as Georgia's governor.
5. Time as one of Georgia's senators.
6. Relationships with Presidents Bush, Clinton, and Carter.
7. Relationships with various Democrat leaders (Mondale, Pelosi,John Lewis, etc.).
8. Views on various issues.
Whether you love or late Zell, you have to admire his guts! Read and enjoy what he thinks of a once great political party (and all you liberals out there, I am not a die hard Republican). Highly recommended!
You're a Democrat Why? .......2007-06-29
The more political books I read the more I realize that politicians really aren't that bad. It is sad that most of the country believes that politicians are cheaters, swindlers, and hustlers. I am glad that I am not in their shoes. With all of the negative content aimed toward them I hate to wonder what their view of themselves is like. Zell Miller puts forth some interesting comments on the history of Georgia politics. Through these comments he shows the reader that he really is focused on making his state and country a better place for all. He puts forth some arguments that the Democratic party is replacing planks in its platform. His support for George W. Bush in his speech at the Republican Convention in 2004 shows that he is becoming more and more against the Democratic party, yet he still declares to be a Democrat. If the party changes and you don't like it do you rant and rave or do you look to a different party? Miller chooses to rant and rave.
One Man's Political Disappointment.......2006-08-14
Zell Miller served many years in politics. He held the Georgia governorship from 1991 to 1999 and from 2000 to 2005 he served as a U.S. Senator from the Peach state. Miller is a man who knows the political process all too well and he feels that his Democratic Party is out of step with America. He feels that the Democratic Party is moving in the wrong direction- a direction that is detrimental to its own survival and wrong for America and its people.
Zell Miller has no problem criticizing his fellow Democrats. He still considers himself a member of the Democratic Party so he is careful not to take his criticism too far. But he is very blunt about what he feels is wrong with his political home. Among other things, Miller feels that Democrats have become too accepting of big government, high taxes, and government intervention. He feels they are too willing to accept extremist views on the environment, abortion, and other issues. He feels they are too quick to disagree with Republican opinions simply because a Republican stated them. He feels they have allowed themselves to become slaves to special interest groups, completely ignoring the wishes of their own constituents. And he feels they are too willing to surrender individual freedom and personal rights, even if it means violating the U.S. Constitution.
Miller's views as expressed in this book remind me of the political and social attitudes of some people I know- especially those who have been members of the party for a long time. Miller is an old- fashioned Democrat along the same lines as Harry Truman, Franklin Roosevelt, and others. He still considers himself a Democrat Party member in spite of the changes that have taken place. Many of Miller's views, in fact, seem more in line with today's Republican Party than those of the modern Democratic Party. For example, Miller supports gun rights, tax cuts, and a greater emphasis on traditional moral values. These ideas are not radical but in today's Democratic Party, many of these political views are considered too conservative to be accepted. As a result of these views, many people refer to Miller as a "Right Wing Puppet", a "Political Sell- Out" and many other things. But like Miller says, he still considers himself a Democrat at heart and what he would like to see is a return to the Democratic Party that he once knew and loved.
Zell Miller's insistence that he is still a Democrat is an interesting one because of the way he defends himself in the book. The way he expresses himself in this book, you would think he is a closet Republican and it seems odd that he would continue to remain a member of the party that he feels has betrayed him. Many other Democrats have jumped ship and joined their former enemies on the Republican side so why not he? Miller has considered it, but he claims the reason he cannot change parties is because referring to himself as a Democrat isn't just an identity label- it is something that is "in his blood". I found this argument unusual because what Miller is basically saying is that his family's political foundation is such that he cannot switch parties, even if the ideology of the Democrats is no longer in tune with his own beliefs. I suppose this is a generational thing, because anyone, at anytime, can change party affiliation. I can't relate to this argument at all but I can understand it a little bit because it is a similar argument that I have heard from other old- time Democrats. These older generation Democratic Party loyalists, like Miller, don't necessarily agree with the Democratic Party on many issues but they often say that being a Democrat and voting for Democrats was the only thing they would ever consider. Old habits die hard, they say, and they would never consider voting for a Republican under any circumstances.
Other than the argument about party loyalty in the face of disagreement, I found the rest of this book to be pretty good and it presents some solid, sensible arguments. What Zell Miller wants to point out is that certain values, integrity, and political stands on important issues should never be for sale. It shouldn't matter if special interest groups are dangling large sums of money for use in campaigning. Politicians should show integrity and stand up for what they believe is right, and that includes standing up to their own party if they feel it is wrong. It would be nice if Miller cross- examined Republicans in this book because many of them are just as likely to kowtow to their own party leaders and special interest groups as the Democrats. But he instead spends most of the book talking about these problems as they relate to his own Democratic Party.
Miller writes this book in an easy to read, laid back way. He has no problem using questionable English every now and then and he doesn't seem to care that his book wasn't written by a professional ghost writer or edited by a Harvard grad. This book is meant to be read and absorbed in a simple, easy to understand manner, without the need to grab a dictionary in order to understand certain words. It is written like a person giving a casual speech.
In these days of political decay with countless politicians who will say anything their party bosses tell them to do and vote whatever way their special interest supporters pay them to vote, it is refreshing to know that a man like Zell Miller is still holding true to his core beliefs and principles. Not everyone will agree with what Zell Miller has to say, but he is certainly a man who is deserving of respect. I agree with only some of his political positions but agree or not, I greatly admire any man who has the courage to stand up to the leadership of his own political party and let them know how he feels about their political strategy and their likelihood of failure if changes are not made. You don't find many people like this nowadays in the U.S. Congress and even though Miller is no longer serving in the U.S. Senate his honesty and integrity serve as good examples for everyone, politician or otherwise, to embrace and practice. Miller sticks to his principles even when it would be much easier to play the political game like everyone else, making him one of the more intriguing political leaders of the recent past.
Excellent read.......2006-03-26
The book was inciteful, well written and very fun to listen to. My only regret is that Zell Miller didnt acutally narrate his own book. His life story about his upbringing and small town politics was very amusing and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book.
Miller's Actions Explained.......2005-12-13
Once there was Zell Miller: a centrist, effective public servant with gravitas few of either party could question. Unfortunately, the Zell Miller most Americans know is the renegade Democrat who gave a speech at the Republican National Convention that bordered on frothing lunacy. This book captures Miller somewhere in between: note his ambitious goals for public education and the environment, while he at the same time deplores popular culture and any attempts by the Democratic Party to disagree with the president. It's a shame, really, that it came to this, but this book gives its share of insight, not to mention a look at what was going on inside Miller's head as he perplexed the American political scene.
