Book Description
Graphic artists who open this scintillating tutorial discover the beauty secrets of cartoon bombshells, then learn how to give them active roles in stories. Step-by-step illustrations show female anatomy and proportion, ways to render poses and body shapes, and methods to exaggerate or simplify female shapes for special effects. Artists learn to create convincing drawings of seductive supergirls, action heroines, sexy cyberpunks, feisty Manga babes, and other types. Instruction includes methods for drawing facial features, head-turning hairstyles, and fantasy wardrobes with eye-popping metal bikinis and skin-tight jumpsuits. A historical overview of females in animation and comics covers styles from Betty Boop to Tank Girl. The author explains the importance of storytelling in art and discusses ways to develop story concepts before starting to draw. Chapters that follow focus on choosing art equipment (pencils, papers, brushes, inks, paints, and pixels), selecting appropriate drawing styles to match characters' personalities, rendering different feminine types, from goddess to the girl next door, and more. The book concludes with a brief survey of the business of commercial art, with advice on how and where to sell finished work, how to draw characters to order, and how artists can protect their rights. More than 200 flamboyant, full-color illustrations.

Not Great...Actually, less than great.......2007-09-30
I tend to buy a lot of "How to Draw" books, art books, etc. and, over the years, I've developeda pretty good sense of what works and what doesn't. Unfortunately, "How to Draw Fantasy Females" just doesn't work.
This book is basically a look into different kinds of female sci-fi/comic book/fantasy characters. It gives information on archetypes (actually, there is a little character sheet-type list at the beginning of the book that will help you design different character "types") and provides a couple of pseudo-helpful tutorials on Photoshop and other programs, but is mostly a showcase of different kinds of femals genre characters. I was underwhelmed, to tell the truth - there is very little "how to" to this book at all. Unless you are a collector or a completionist, I recommend just staying away from this one and looking elsewhere.
It's alright if you live under a rock.......2007-09-23
this book talks about the type of characters there are in stories and what not. And if you plan on drawing fantasy stuff, chances are you already know about these character types. Theres plenty left out and this doesnt teah you much if you know how to draw and if you dont know how to draw, this doesnt teach you how.
I got this thinking it'd show me how to draw suits and armor and stuff for females, not tell me that i could draw a girl with a gun or a female alien shaped like a uterus (im dead serious), whats up with that?
If i knew what i know now about this book, I wouldnt buy it. I can't really say who this book would be useful for. I guess its for those who want to draw fantasy style, but have no idea what kind of fantasy settings exsist. And with all the movies, cartoons, videogames, and comic books out there, i dont thing such a person walks this earth.
I wouldnt call it a waste, it does have some nice artwork in it, but overall its useless for me. I'm not an expert or draw for a living or anything like that and im not new at it. This would have been useful if it tought you how to draw stuff or at least had more/unheard of archetypes. Another thing is that this book does is assumes you want to make a comic book which gets annoying because it gives story ideas instead telling me what i wanted to learn.
lousy book.......2007-02-06
This book isn't worth the paper it's written on. There's next to nothing useful in it, any other drawing book on the market is far better. I'm amazed a publisher released it.
Nice intro and useful catalog of techniques.......2007-01-15
Overall, besides the 'cheesecake' appeal, the breakdown of styles and techniques justify buying this book. I haven't yet, but I might.
I reccomend anyone using this as a learning tool also get a DVD/Digital cable and once in a while use the 'pause' feature, to sketch what they see on the TV. Have a sketchbook devoted to 'life drawing' from this source, seperate from the 'fantasy' stuff. Also, "Drawing and painting fantasy figures" should be purchased first, as more versatile, along with its companion on "Fantasy Worlds".
Poser, mentioned heavily in this book, is also a very good tool. Ever see a movie called "Fire and Ice"? It was done with a "Rotoscope" where artists drew over still frames from a movie that used actors approximating what the animation would be. Today, with Poser and some decent software, such as flash and painter, such a movie could be made far more easily. One of my projects once I think of a good "Thud and Blunder" plot to tribute to Heroic fantasy;-)
I use TrueSpace for more ambitious 3D, but for general figure position experiments, Poser works good. Got a copy of Poser 5 here, and it works great. Previously, I'd used Poser 3, which I got for free in a magazine, but when I got a computer with more than a Gig of Ram, Poser 3 couldn't recognize it.
Not what you think.......2006-12-31
Drop the How to Draw from the title and you will get what you are paying for. This book covers software and tools used in the profession but lacks any step by steps useful to beginners and contains info already known by anyone with basic knowledge of character design. This book is more of a gallery of created characters.

A dictionary for filmmakers........2006-04-28
Anyone who works in the industry knows that they and their co-workers live in their own little world. Film is filled with things specific to the industry... The average person probably thinks that N.Y.P.D. Blue is just a TV show, has no idea what a stinger is, thinks a lollipop is just a piece of candy on a stick, and "C47" most likely means nothing to them.
I found this to be one of the most valuable books I've ever purchased. It's a handy reference manual that I keep in my tool box at all times - Proving itself to be a priceless addition.
A lot of people will find it cheesy - And to a degree, some of the things covered are, but it's 10% cheese and 90% awesomeness.
Strike the Baby ... is a dictionary of film making slang........2006-03-14
I just love the title. It takes some guts to buy this in a bookstore as the checkout person might think you're a bit wierd. I recommend that if you are sensitive to this sort of thing then buy the book on the Internet.
The book is a clever, wonderful listing of terms in alphabetical order and each term is defined by the author in a style that is slightly flippant, which I find sometimes annoying, but also seems to bring some real life experience to the definitions that an academic would never impart. The book lacks pictures of the items being defined but that inclusion would increase the book size and cost. This book sells for a very reasonable cost. Who is this book for? Any film student or PA that wishes to break into the film industry should memorize almost all these terms. Above and below the line people, now in the industry, might find quite a few terms that they did not yet hear or understand. For some film professionals, some of the terms may be part of their passive vocabulary and now one can now discover how close or distant their prior understanding was to the book's more "exact" meaning. This book should be a second text for some film classes. Instructors in those classes should require definitions be understood as part of the course in filmmaking. For the non-professional film buff that wants to dabble in understanding this field, this book should be within easy reach of the porcelain throne for brief reads. I think the level that this book is written is at high school level. I strongly recommend that high school or even middle school students consider this book to impress their peer group. For everyone else, the book is a treat.
Light the Blonde on This Really Cool Book! .......2006-03-03
The film industry, especially being on the set, is near and dear to my heart. Being with the crew (the people who make the movie possible) was always one of my favorite things in life, which is what drew me to this cool book.
The industry has a language all of its own. Due to saving time, especially during long shoots, the lingo actually saves time (and money) to get things done properly, without a long explanation. Thus this book is awesome to learn the lingo shortcuts when you're on the set.
Any actor, producer, writer, film student, new Inde production company should have this in their library, both for reference, and to know what the crew are actually talking about while on the set. It saves time, and if you're in the industry, you really need to know what the terms mean.
A good analogy would be a medical student in training to be a surgeon would need to know the lingo in an operating room. It's that important.
I loved reading this awesome and incredibly accurate book. It made me feel super nostalgic wanting to be on the set again. Being on the set is either in your blood or not. If you love the industry, you'll definitely LOVE this book!
(FYI) "Kill the Blonde" means to turn off the 2,000 watt spotlight. That's why I titled this review: "Light the Blonde on This Really Cool Book!" It's awesome!

Book Description
Popular culture is important in wartime. It asserts the values of patriotism, helps to create "happy warriors," and expresses people's emotions. Here, Cleveland treats war as popular culture, using service songs, folklore, and popular music as a leitmotif to explore cultural relationships between military life and society. Drawing on 20th-century lyrics, occupational folklore, and rank-and-file parodies, protests, and sexual fantasies, he shows how crises of war are mediated by popular culture and how the soldier comes to terms with boredom, discomfort, and danger. Ranging from World War I to Vietnam and drawing on his own experience in World War II, Cleveland provides a unique treatment of military folklore and popular song in 20th-century warfare from the perspective of the ordinary soldier.

From A Brivele der Mamen, a 1938 Polish soap opera in Yiddish, to Zulu Dawn (1979), a lavish portrayal of African-British violence featuring Burt Lancaster and Peter O'Toole, the Blockbuster Guide is an A-to-Z resource of more than 23,000 movie reviews. Along with each concise summary/review, Blockbuster includes the year it was made and the number of stars (0 to 5) the film rates, who directed it and who acts in it, how long it runs and to what category it belongs, what language it's in, and most helpful of all, whether it's been released on video. In addition, there's an index of directors and their movies, an index of actors and the movies they appear in, and memory-aid boxes by each film's name so you can check the ones you've seen. The guide does an impressive job of providing vast information in few words, thereby allowing for a great breadth of listings while maintaining a manageable size, convenient to keep as a permanent VCR or coffee-table companion. --Stephanie Gold

Blockbuster Better Than Maltin.......2006-04-08
I have both the Blockbuster Entertainment book and the Leonard Maltin, and I have foound the Blockbuster to be far more complete and inclusive than Maltin's. Maltin doesn't even show James Arness. Eva Marie Saint, and a host of other fine actors that do appear in the Blockbuster edition. I wish Blockbuster would put out a more recent edition than the 1998 one.
Editorializing, but OK.......2005-04-27
No one is going to agree with all of the movie reviews in this book, just as readers so often take issue with newspaper film critics. It would be nice to see a "just the facts" approach without quite so much editorializing on the individual movies, but with that point set aside, it is a decent guide. The indices in the back are perhaps the best feature, allowing you to look up a particular director or actor's filmography, and to find films by category (whereas the book as a whole is alphabetized by film title).
Don't buy this one!.......2002-03-07
They don't even get the story line right. Read the review of Hud and weep.
A movie guide from America's biggest censor.......2002-02-27
Trusting Blockbuster to write a movie guide is like trusting the wolf to take care of the sheep. Blockbuster, the company that bans letterboxed DVDs and independent films from its shelves (really), does not understand the first thing about movies. All they know is if it is a hot seller. Does popularity make a movie good? If you have no mind of your own, maybe so. But take a look at the shelves at Blockbuster for the really good movies that you missed in the theatre: Airplane, Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, Valmont, etc. Oh, they're not there? Guess Blockbuster threw them out to make space for another copy of Gladiator. Really. Ask them.
If you want a good movie guide, try Roger Ebert's reviews or Amazon.com's Internet Movie Database...But stay away from Blockbuster -- and their books.
A BOOK TO OWN AND FINDING MOVIES!.......1999-07-29
A definitive comprehensive book to have because it gives the actors & actresses their list of films for a collection you'd might have or don't to check mark off of. And tells how many stars it gives for the rating of their review. Last who's director of that film by Blockbuster Video!

Fair reference guide.......2005-04-27
I've used this book as a reference guide to TV shows in general, not as a guide to which shows are out on video (and, of course, the video element is now obsolete, with the arrival of DVDs). The book is arranged in categories such as comedy and drama, with the individual programs alphabetized within. For each show, there is a cast list for the major characters, a few credits, a few behind-the-scenes paragraphs, and a few bits of trivia. Most shows comprise three or four pages, and black-and-white photos are included.
A Great Guide To Shows On Videotape.......1997-12-31
This book profiles nearly 150 tv shows. It contains interesting trivia too. It profiles such shows as Soap, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Hogan's Heroes,Bonanza, and many more.

explaining ups and downs of relationships and offering hope.......2002-09-16
THis is a truly excellent book that has helped me over the years in my marriage. THe authors' thesis is that there are 3 phases to relationships: discovery ("expansion"), disillusionment ("contraction"), and recommitment ("rediscovery"). THe book is clearly written and offers great advice. Seeing this as a cycle that had inevitable down persiods and how to get ouot of them was very valuable for me.
REcommended warmly.

Book Description
The last days of the Raj bring to mind Gandhi's nonviolence and Nehru's diplomacy. These associations obscure another reality: that an army of Indian men and women who tried to throw the British off the subcontinent. The Forgotten Army brings to life for the first time the story of how Subhas Chandra Bose, a charismatic Bengali, attempted to liberate India with an army of former British Indian soldiers--the Indian National Army (INA).
The story begins with the British Indian Army fighting a heroic rearguard action against the invading Japanese down the Malaysian peninsula and ends with many of these same soldiers defeated in their effort to invade India as allies of Japan. Peter Ward Fay intertwines powerful descriptions of military action with a unique knowledge of how the INA was formed and its role in the broader struggle for Indian independence.
Fay incorporates the personal reminiscences of Prem Saghal, a senior officer in the INA, and Lakshmi Swaminadhan, leader of its women's sections, to help the reader understand the motivations of those who took part. Their experiences offer an engagingly personal counterpoint to the political and military history.
". . . a well-crafted and thought-provoking mixture of oral history and original research, providing the most comprehensive account yet published of the events leading to the formation of the INA." --Guardian
"Fay has made a magnificent attempt to analyse all the credible information on the history of [Subhas Chandra] Bose's legendary Indian National Army (INA)." --Times Higher Education Supplement
"This fine study of the Indian National Army (INA) seeks to demonstrate this army's significance in the attainment of Indian independence and the termination of the British Empire. . . . Throughout, Fay seeks to explain why 'constant and true' Indians like Sahgal and Swaminadhan chose to fight alongside the Japanese and against the British . . . ." -- Pacific Affairs
Peter Ward Fay is Professor of History, California Institute of Technology.

memories of midnight.......2003-10-31
There are several other books on Netaji and the view from hindsight after more than 50 years. One wonders why it took so long to do this, was it because the man would now be close to 100 years? Strangely, there are reports that he survives as a sadhu or holy man in N India, near Lucknow or Allahabad.
The New Yorker carried a good article by A. Ghosh who draws on interviews with other INA personnel. The British Empire was a 'white man's club' (see Robert Huttenback). In this context, an Indian officer could not rise very high in the army (there were a few exceptions). The INA gave ex POW's in Japanese controlled territories a chance. Why deny this to someone you would not wish to invite into your own drinking circle at the Club after work?
This dog in the manger attitude of the colonials still has its hangover today, even among the brown sahibs who rule India and have grudgingly given an award to Netaji Bose.
My father knew Netaji in Calcutta when he was Mayor in the 1920's, and who helped him to finish college. Later he met him in Germany prior to WW 2. There are some photos somewhere.
Records of Netaji's association with the Japanese and German army are available, including the materials carried along with him in the submarine to Japan.
The Germans had a batallion of British volunteers who were known as Hitlers Englishmen. God only knows what happened to them.
"JIFs" or Freedom Fighters?.......2000-05-02
The Indian National Army, and its operations with the Japanese in the Burma theatre of operations during World War II, was long a controversial subject between Indians and British, and generally regarded with curmudgeonly disapproval by the British. The fact is that the issue of collaboration was probably more complicated in the Asia-Pacific theatre than it was in the European theatre. Experiencing the colonial rule of the British, French, and Dutch, many Burmese, Malays, Vietnamese, Sumatrans and Javanese saw the Japanese as colonial liberators. Even in the Philippines, under an allegedly benign American rule, much of the legislature stayed on to work under the Japanese. The Germans, of course, used peoples like the Lithuanians and Ukrainians in order to carry out the "Final Solution", but the situation was somewhat different. Asian nationalists struggling for independence, largely along lines laid for them by Western educations, found themselves betrayed by Western colonial empires who were committed to holding on at all cost (or so they thought until 1942). Fay's book provides a case study of one of the most famous (or notorious) instances of collaboration in the Asia-Pacific theatre. He examines the history of the Indian National Army (derogatorily referred to by the British as "JIFs"--Japanese Indian Forces) through an INA perspective, specifically in interviews with Prem and Lakshmi Sahgal, a husband and wife who found themselves in Singapore in 1942 when the British surrendered to the Japanese--Prem as a captured officer, and Lakshmi as a doctor. Both, disillusioned and fed up with years of British promises of independence that grew consciously or unconsciously caught up in red tape and official footdragging, decided to join the Japanese-affiliated force of Indian soldiers that would reclaim India for the Indians. The rest of the story should be read through their words, providing a much needed other side to the story of the Indian struggle for independence.

"Everything that he has done
was against this country."
Joe Frazier on Muhammad Ali
Part man, part myth, and all American, Muhammad Ali is history's most beloved, most revered athlete. But though he was "The Greatest" inside the ring, outside he was a hulking mass of contradictions.
This book is the first comprehensive, pull-no-punches account of America's least likely icon. Jack Cashill explores the changing mores and racial dynamics of the sixties alongside Ali's epic battles in the ring. "What Ali did, great or otherwise, was to channel the spirit of his age. . . . He captured the ethos of that decade all too well. It wasn't pretty. I was there, and I know what I saw."
Cashill reveals how Elijah Muhammad seduced Ali--and how that seduction spelled the betrayal of Dr. King's dream, the death of Malcolm X, the humiliation of Joe Frazier, the rise of Don King, and the tragic undoing of Mike Tyson--and proves that:
Ali was an unapologetic sexist and unabashed racist, calling for the lynching of interracial couples and an American apartheid as late as 1975.
Ali routinely denigrated black heroes who did not share his point of view, including Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, and especially Joe Frazier.
Ali shamelessly courted some of the most brutal dictators on the planet: Qadaffi, Idi Amin, Papa Doc Duvalier, Nkrumah, Mobutu, and Ferdinand Marcos.
With unusual sympathy and unflinching insight, Cashill assesses Ali's boxing conquests and political influence. He shows how the very figure who could have brought America's diverse people together when it mattered, instead tore them apart.
Jack Cashill has written and directed The Holocaust through Our Own Eyes, The Soul of the West and the Emmy-Award winning The Royal Years among other documentaries for regional PBS and national cable channels. Cashill has a Ph.D. in American studies from Purdue and has been published in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Fortune, Weekly Standard, WorldNetDaily, and Ingram's, where he serves as executive editor. He is also the author of First Strike, Ron Brown's Body, and Hoodwinked: How Intellectual Hucksters Have Hijacked American Culture.

SPORTSMANSHIP.......2007-01-26
Mohomed Ali was a man who denigrated his opponents, who arragantly boasted about himself and his prowess,in interviews he would babble on almost incoherently about himself. The man sounded like a child who never grew up.His lack of sportsmanship and disrespect for his opponents showed his own lack of class. He was held to a lower standered simply because he is black.Rocky Marciano and Joe Louis were classy MEN who Mohomed could have emulated, but his huge ego prevented that.

Whilst there's an enormous industry that has been built around the Ali mythology, especially post Atlanta '96, it's inevitable that someone would see the opportunity and financial benefit of doing a work that seeks to "go contrary" to all-out puncture the Ali myth. The reality is that whilst there are inherent weaknesses in Cahill's work, generalisations, inaccuracies and plain-old "Why didn't he go to Vietnam?" trailer-park conservatism, there's always room for a contrarian view, just as long as it's honest, accurate and robust. (Or failing all of those, it it's fabulously, novelistically written, enter Mark Kram's "Ghosts of Manila"). This book fails purely because it's as agenda-driven as the weaker Ali hagiographies. It's the easiest way to write a poor book: do a treatment of the agenda and then get the facts to fit the predetermined thesis. Bingo, out comes a shallow paperback. I'd counsel any Ali reader with a genuine sense of discovery to go for the (continuingly) great works: Thomas Hauser's, "His Life and Times" and Gerald Early's "The Muhammad Ali Reader" offer rich, panoramic insights into the man, way more balanced, rigorous (exploring good & bad) and far more subtantial that Mr Cashill's ill-informed and under-researched effort. I suspect Mr Cashill is one of those "let's go heavier in Iraq" types that the world needs far fewer of. "Fans" of the book, based on the reviews on Amazon, certainly have their political colours firmly painted on the mast. I bet they still hate Jane Fonda also.
Hitman for the Ultra right........2006-11-04
An unbridled hit piece nothing more. This book relies on Cashill personal observations and opinions and is short on fact. The few facts that are put forward have glaring inaccuracies that make them useless, calling into question the author's motives and research abilities. Another attempt to rewrite history and as usual it is very poorly done.
RACIST REMARKS ABOUT MUHAMMED ALI ARE NOTHING NEW: BUSHLANDIA IS NIXON 1958.......2006-09-21
.
Read newspapers from the early sixties, etc., to see hate mail for Muhammed, instead of this terrible book. To imply as this title does that Muhammed Ali somehow "Killed King" is beneath contempt, beneath regard, but symptomatic of the perverse wrong-headed psychosis which befalls the guilty head of right wing America. The killers blame the allies. MacBeth blames Banquo's sons.
To accuse Ali of being chummy with Marcos, the right wing US backed dictator of the Philipines, is ridiculous. Marcos was a puppet regime of the USA run in a repressive military manner like our puppet Pinochet we established in Chile after killing its president on 9/11/73. US presidents down to Nixon worked cheek to jowl with Marcos. It was only after Marcos's death that he was revealed for the ugly killer that he was. Ali bears no blame in the Marcos affair. It was the only place he could stage a fight and practice his trade after being blacked out by the US boxing commission due to his political stances. This present book is nothing but a smear job from beginning to end.
For a more complete picture of Mr. Ali, get Hauser's Lost Legacy, which deeply considers some of the salient points raised by this present polemical piece.
Then sit back and listen to Ossie Davis's recording of Soul of the Butterfly, and be healed, revived, resurrected and ready to work once again for peace and for justice.
Book Description
One of the most comprehensive single-volume reference works on birds ever produced.
With photographs and descriptions of over 1,300 species, plus a full listing of every bird species in the world, this outstanding reference is an up-to-date portrait of the world birds. An international team of ornithologists provides concise descriptions and reveals the latest science in bird evolution, behavior, ecology, classification and identification. Organized by region and habitat rather than species, the book allows for a more instinctive understanding of birds and their relationships with each other and the environment.
The opening section on bird evolution and anatomy explains species classification and identification, showing how DNA research is causing a re-evaluation of the known science.
The directory makes up the bulk of the book. It is divided into six sections on the Earth's zoogeographical regions. Each section is written by a recognized authority and includes a thorough review of species, habitat and threats, and conservation organizations. Along with specially commissioned artwork, each species description includes:
- Scientific and common names
- Physical characteristics, behavior, habitat and distribution
- Conservation status
- Similar species, with cross-references.
This superb reference closes with an up-to-date list of the more than 9,800 species of birds recognized by ornithologists.
