Book Description
BISHOUJO (beautful girls) is indispensable in the world of manga. Even if you can draw women, it is difficult to draw them attractively. This book explains how to draw hair, faces, eyes and the figure of BISHOUJO in the Japanese manga style.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Bishoujo Book!.......2007-07-11
This really helps in seeing the various clothing females wear around the world. They go from Japan to Africa. There's also a section for Prehistoric Bishoujo if you like that. The illustrations are wonderful for they show how each of the races are: Mangolid, Causcoid, and Negroid are illustrated in this book.
Nice...But Needs More.......2007-03-07
My wonderful daddy bought this book for me a few months ago and this is my favorite out of the 5 I own. I did like this book alot but I wish the author would add more detail when portraying the clothing of ALL of the different countries that the book mentioned. For example, I was drawing a bishoujo from Iraq, but there were no clothes that were made in the book from Iraq. There was some from Iran, but not Iraq.
I also wish that the book would go into more detail with the punk/rock/metal page. I wish there was more choices of clothes, hair and facial positions with the punk/rock/metal page. I'd prefer that best.
Yes, I am a younger person than people would expect to be drawing manga, but this book does contain a fair amount of nudity. It's not sexual nudity or anything, but it's necessary, I suppose. I would recomend this book to somebody who wouldn't be shocked if there was a bit of nudeness in this book. However, i'm not quite a teenager and I don't mind.
Excellent ref book to have!.......2006-11-28
When I saw this book, I simply had to have it! If you are looking for a book that helps you get a good idea of different ethinicities, then this is a book for you! This book teaches you the certain attributes of different race characters on how to correctly draw them, and how to give them their own individuality. As a warning to those who don't like nudity, this book does contain a good bit of nudity, so I don't recommend this book to those of you who are offended by nudity. I think all of the characters are beautifully drawn, Hikaru Hayashi is one of my favorite how to draw artists'. Also in the book, it gives you some descriptions of clothing each race wear, hair types, and skin types. This is a good book for those who would like to draw different races in their manga, (which I do).So if you are a big Hayashi fan, then you will be very pleased with this book!
Great Book.......2006-03-09
For those inspired artist that want to expend your horizon with different types of culture around the world, this is an excellent book to own. This book will give you the manga version on how to draw bishoujo in diffenet cultures.
Excellent Reference Book.......2004-11-23
This edition is wonderful to learn how to draw manga characters with a particluar ethnic background. It covers a wide variety of cultures all around the world by how they are dressed, how thier ethnic clothes is put on (in some cases), and how you would draw that specific ethnicity manga-style. Regions covered:
-East Asian (Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia)
-Southern Asian (India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh)
-Oceanian (Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, Australia)
-Northern Europe (Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland)
-Southern Europe (Spain, Italy, Portugal)
-Mediterranean (Egypt, Greece)
-Middle Eastern (Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Turkey)
-Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Liberia)
-North America (Canada, United States)
-Central & South America (Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Peru)
Ancient & Prehistoric dresses covered:
-Ancient Greek, Germanic, & Celtic
-Ancient Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Egyption
-Prehistoric Cavewomen
..and a little section on modern punk/rock/heavy metal for some strange reason.
This book is more of a reference guide for traditional garments of women throughout the modern world and ancient world and is for those who do not mind the nudity.
On a side note, I don't know if this is true with all editions but the book I have has 8 blank pages. That's right, blank, as in there is nothing printed in that page. You're better off going to the bookstore and checking the book yourself before buying.

Book Description
A comic collection of Tom the dinosaur's funniest adventures, compiled from the pages of !Dibus!-a monthly magazine for young artists.
Book Description
Have you noticed the renaissance of documentary filmmaking going on around you? Some are inspired by the work of legendary directors and cinematographers such as the Maysles brothers, D.A. Pennabaker & Chris Hegedus, Errol Morris, or Ken Burns. Others follow their own idols or simply set their own course. Inexpensive video camera equipment and video editing software have helped fuel this new wave of truth-tellers, bringing the tools of the craft within reach of amateurs and students, as well as independent journalists and filmmakers on a budget.
In The Art of the Documentary, the directors, editors, cinematographers, and producers behind today's most thought-provoking nonfiction films reveal the thought processes, methods, and collaborations that have guided their efforts- from project conception to developing, producing, shooting, editing, and releasing some of the finest documentary films of recent decades.
This richly illustrated volume, which will appeal to professional and aspiring filmmakers, as well as documentary enthusiasts, features conversations with director Ken Burns (The Civil War, Jazz, Baseball), director/cinematographer D A Pennebaker (Dont Look Back, The War Room), director/cinematographer Albert Maysles (Gimme Shelter, Grey Gardens), director Errol Morris (The Fog of War, The Thin Blue Line), director Chris Hegedus (Startup.com, Down from the Mountain), editor Larry Silk (Pumping Iron, Wild Man Blues), cinematographer Buddy Squires (The Civil War, Ram Dass, Fierce Grace), director/producer Lauren Lazin (Tupac: Resurrection, Journey of Dr. Dre), editor/director Paula Heredia (The Vagina Monologues, In Memoriam: New York City, 9/11/01), director/cinematographer Kirsten Johnson (Fahrenheit 9/11, Innocent Until Proven Guilty), and editor Geof Bartz (Lenny Bruce: Swear to Tell the Truth, He's Having a Baby). And with contributions by: Sheila Nevins, President of HBO Documentaries and HBO Family, Carol Dysinger, film editor and professor, NYU Film School, and Haskell Wexler, cinematographer.

Artfully Done.......2006-03-11
The Art of the Documentary
By Mary Cunningham
Review by Pi Ware
Mary Cunningham's "The Art of the Documentary" is an attractive full-color compilation of interviews with some of the world's foremost documentarians. It's an intimate and insightful glimpse into both the art and craft of docs and a must-read for filmmakers serious about creating non-fiction work. You'll learn how Errol Morris creates "first-person cinema" using The Interrotron; why Ken Burns locks music before script, how D A Pennebaker futhered art via technology, and how cinema-verité documentarians like Haskell Wexler are able to "inspire" scenarios within their films.
Notably missing are the king of the personal documentary, Ross McElwee, and the masterful doc team of Bruce Sinofsky and Joe Berlinger. But Cunningham fills the spaces with interviews of the behind-the-scenes players--editors, executives and cinematographers. And in doing so she gives you a broader picture of the doc world and deeper insights into what it will take for you to make a successful non-fiction film.
Nonfiction documentaries reveal the methods and focus their directors.......2005-11-09
Megan Cunningham's Art Of The Documentary offers ten conversations with some of the best documentary directors, editors and producers in the industry. Nonfiction documentaries reveal the methods and focus their directors, which is captured in chapters which begin with project concept and move through the entire production process. Plenty of color photos illustrate each director's works.
Mentors Supplied.......2005-11-02
Ever wanted Ken Burns or others in the pantheon of documentary greats as your personal film making mentor? This book gives you that and more. This versatile book is as perfect for someone just starting out in documentary films as it is for a veteran who wants in on a few secrets of the masters. Our film production company read from it aloud on location and everyone, from the producer to the cinematographer to the researchers, all gleaned practical tips from it. The interviews are substantive, insightful and most importantly, very useful. A real keeper for those interested in learning nuances and techniques from a wide range of documentary styles.
Riveting reading.......2005-07-27
Consider this book a master class in documentary filmmaking.
Megan Cunningham's interviews are incredibly engaging - she manages to at once explore each documentarians' creative process, AND discuss how these various filmmakers achieved their success, AND to discuss specific films in-depth AND to elicit the filmmakers' fascinating views on theoretical issues such as what constitutes "cinema verite" or whether documentaries can be considered art.
Furthermore, Cunningham's book is wonderfully readable and well organized (and full of photos!). I especially enjoyed how Cunningham devoted equal space to such luminaries as Errol Morris and lesser known but equally powerful documentarians such as Lauren Lazin. The book manages to seamlessly cover more than 50 years of American filmmaking and it's wonderful to have the thoughts of multiple generations of directors, editors, and cinematographers compiled in one volume.
Whether you're a fan of documentaries, an aspiring documentary filmmaker, or unfamiliar with the entire field and would like to learn more, "The Art of the Documentary" is the book for you.
A must for students or anyone who wants to make docs.......2005-07-27
More so than anything else, this book is informative. In 10 interviews Cunningham does a great job of getting to the core of the passion for doc filmmaking of 10 of the biggest names in the genre (Burns, Morris, Lazin, Bartz, etc.).
Beyond getting a glimpse into the filmmakers' drive, the interviews also offer plenty in terms of understanding technique and the general "how-to."
This book is a must for anyone interested in movie making, be it practically, or academically. It's an engrossing read.

Book Description
Much of contemporary scholarship on fathers comes from a deficit model, focusing on men's inadequacies as parents. This edited volume assembles a group of prominent scholars who go beyond a deficit model of fatherhood to what the editors call a generative fathering perspective. The generative fathering approach, inspired by the developmental theories of Erik Erikson and building on the pioneering research of John Snary, sees the work fathers do for their children in terms of caring for and contributing to the life of the next generation. The editors describe generative fathering, placing it in contrast to the role-inadequacy perspective of fatherhood. Contributors then elaborate on generative fathering in terms of gender, ethnicity, and historical perspectives and present research that helps us understand generative fathering in challenging life circumstances, such as special-needs children, teenage fathering, and divorce and remarriage. Applications for the generative fathering perspective are presented in terms of family life education, clinical work, and scholarly discourse. The editors conclude the volume with a chapter on ways to teach about generative fathering in college courses. Supported by both qualitative and quantitative research, this book goes beyond the frequent identification of fathers as primarily absent, abusive, deadbeat, deficient, or unnecessary, and helps us to understand fathers as men working to build caring bridges across generations.
Book Description
Drawing of a vast range of government archives previously classified as well as interviews with key participants, the first volume of the official history of the Falklands Campaign provides the most authoritative account of the origins of the 1982 war. In the first chapters the author analyzes the long history of the dispute between the difficulties faced by successive governments in finding a way to reconcile the opposed interests of the Argentines and the islanders and the constant struggle to keep the Islands viable. He subsequently gives a complete account of how what began as an apparently trivial incident over an illegal landing by scrap-metal merchant s on the island of South Georgia turned into a major crisis. Thanks to his access to classified material, Sir Lawrence Freedman has been able to produce a detailed and authoritative analysis which extends the coverage given by the Franks Committee Report of 1983. This volume is ultimately an extremely readable account of these events, charting the growingrealization within the British government of the seriousness of the situation, culminating in the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands at the start of April 1982.
Customer Reviews:
Major work on political agenda setting.......2007-06-05
Agenda setting, in the world of politics, is when a problem becomes identified as an issue that calls for government attention, discussion, and--possibly--decision making. This book is one of the most important works on agenda-setting.
John Kingdon has stated that:
Political events flow along according to their own dynamics and their own rules. Participants perceive swings in national mood, elections bring new administrations to power and new partisan or ideological distributions to Congress, and interest groups of various descriptions press (or fail to press) their demands on government.
The author sees three streams that must come together for an issue to be placed on the agenda--a political stream (just noted above), a policy stream (in which some policy proposal emerges as "best"), and a problem stream (a problem develops that people label as important). If they come together and if the window of opportunity for success is there, then the issue can become an agenda item. If the streams do not come together, agenda placement is unsuccessful--as with President Clinton's health care plan. That plan had two of three requirements in place. One, the political stream was supportive. A new President had been elected with his party having a majority in both houses of Congress; furthermore, Clinton outlined as a campaign issue support for a more ambitious health care program for Americans. The confluence of these two factors produced something like a "mandate" for change. Two, the problem stream saw health care bubbling up toward the top. That is, increasingly, people seemed to define health care as a serious problem about which something had to be done.
Nonetheless, no major initiative emerged to be fully considered. Clinton's plan was very nearly DOA (dead on arrival) once serious discussion began. Why? No single policy proposal garnered enough support. Democrats supported several different plans--such as a single payer system (in which government becomes the insurer), "pay or play" (in which businesses would largely fund health care insurance), and the Clinton plan itself (which focused on managed care). Thus, the policy stream never did "come together" around any single proposal. As a result, the initiative died and no substantial changes were forthcoming in the health care system.
What emerges in each stream is, to a large extent, "contingent," depending upon many factors--including chance. The result is unpredictability.
It may be that this work overemphasizes chance and contingency and underplays the role of human agency (for instance, the role of policy entrepreneurs who labot to get issues placed on the agenda and acted upon). Nonetheless, this is an exemplary work and well worth attending to if one is interested in setting the political agenda.
Good theory, easy to read.......2004-10-10
Kingdon has produced an innovative and useful theory of the policy process. This book is clearly not intended for the lay reader, but for political scientists and policy specialists interested in theorizing about policy formation.
Kingdon's writing style is somewhat formal, and at times stiff, but the book is easy to get through. Kingdon provides many concrete examples of the ideas he discusses, making the abstract principles easier to understand.
Recommended for classes on the policy process, especially in conjunction with Baumgarter and Jones' Agendas and Instability in American Politics.
Great, just a little expensive.......2003-01-08
John Kingdon attempts to answer very difficult questions in his work "Agendas, Alternatives, and Public Policies." What makes an idea's time come? What makes people in and around government attend to some subjects and not to others? In short, Kingdon explores how ideas become policy in his 1994 award-winning book.
The book makes many interesting conclusions, as Kingdon uses scientific research methods to discuss how ideas become policy. It is amazing that Kingdon is able to quantify how influential certain groups are to policy formulation and implementation. In doing this, he looks at the influence of groups in and outside of government. Kingdon then goes onto his major two concepts of the policy primeval soup and the political stream. Both of these are wonderful illustrations of how policymaking happens.
In the end, this is a great book for public policy students. My only complaint is that Kingdon is oftentimes too wordy. It seems that he could have written a much more effective piece by summing it up in a 40-page journal article. In any event, the book is worth the read, even if some chapters are only skimmed.
Was Not Riviting but the Theory Is Good.......2002-12-25
I am in the graduate program at American University's School of Public Affairs. This book was required for one of the core classes. The theory--the dynamic, fluid model that Kingdon builds in this book has been practically adopted as THE mantra within policy formation/agenda setting research.
The book is well organized and easy to follow. It is not a challenging read but I found sections of the book to be a bit dry. Also, be ready to contend with literally hundreds of fluid metaphors that Kingdon employs throughout the book.
A great book on public policy formulation.......1999-07-07
In this very readable book, Kindgon provides an insightful perspective on how agendas are set and public policies made in the government. Using the "garbage can model" as the basis and starting point, Kindgon develops his "policy window" concept of policy making that has three fundamental components: problems, policies, and politics. Each component has a life of its own and is independent from each other. The concept of "policy entrepreneurs" is also introduced.
I highly recommend this book to anybody interested in public policy formulation.

Description:
The bearded vulture Gypaetus barbatus is a large, long-lived osteophagus vulture whose abundance and breeding range have drastically declined during the last century, making it one of the most endangered European bird species. We evaluated the extinction risk of the bearded vulture population in Corsica (a small, isolated breeding population of 8-10 pairs), one of the last extant populations in Western Europe, and estimated its probability of extinction to be 0.165 over the next 50 years. A sensitivity analysis to assess the influence of uncertain demographic rates showed that it is critical to estimate precisely the values of pre-adult survival. Neither the type nor the parameters of density dependence acting on fecundity and survival rates influenced much the extinction risk of the Corsican population. We evaluated the effect of four realistic conservation actions that could be implemented on the Corsican bearded vulture population and rank them in terms of their respective decrease of the current extinction risk faced by this population. We found that the release of two juveniles every other year for 12 years and the increase of fecundity due to selective food provisioning would reduce by more than one-half the current extinction risk of Corsican bearded vulture population. In contrast, even substantial increases in the carrying capacity through large supplemental feeding produced very modest decreases in the extinction risk, thus calling into question the efficacy of one of the main pan-European conservation strategies for this species. Re-establishing a population network within the Mediterranean could be a potentially better strategy, though its efficacy depends on natal dispersal among populations that is currently unknown.

Description:
The predicted climate change causes deep concerns on the effects of increasing temperatures and changing precipitation patterns on species viability and, in turn, on biodiversity. Models of Population Viability Analysis (PVA) provide a powerful tool to assess the risk of species extinction. However, most PVA models do not take into account the potential effects of behavioural adaptations. Organisms might adapt to new environmental situations and thereby mitigate negative effects of climate change. To demonstrate such mitigation effects, we use an existing PVA model describing a population of the tawny eagle (Aquila rapax) in the southern Kalahari. This model does not include behavioural adaptations. We develop a new model by assuming that the birds enlarge their average territory size to compensate for lower amounts of precipitation. Here, we found the predicted increase in risk of extinction due to climate change to be much lower than in the original model. However, this ''buffering'' of climate change by behavioural adaptation is not very effective in coping with increasing interannual variances. We refer to further examples of ecological ''buffering mechanisms'' from the literature and argue that possible buffering mechanisms should be given due consideration when the effects of climate change on biodiversity are to be predicted.

From the author: We encountered a dead southern black racer snake (Coluber constrictor priapus) coiled around a dead Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus). We suggest the owl was strangled by the snake before the snake died of wounds inflicted by the owl. There are previous reports of intense physical struggle between Great Horned Owls (and other raptors) and large constrictors but this is the first documented report of mutual mortality between a Great Horned Owl and a snake. Received 19 Oct. 2000, accepted 31 Aug. 2001.
