Take pop appreciation to a new level.......2007-01-12

Coffee table or bookcase, this book is for the most artistic of videogame fans, as well as those that appreciate mixed media with their pop culture. Joust, Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Pac Man, Q-Bert and more are all displayed like you've never seen them by talented artists. The nostalgia is thick and sweet smelling; a feeling that few will appreciate to it's fullest. Highly recommended for artists and nerds alike. Pop Art a la '80s.......2006-05-13

First and foremost, this book makes a wonderful inexpensive gift for anyone who grew up in the '80s playing the 'ole 8-bit video systems and still has a bit of nostalgia for those simpler times. It's also pretty neat as a bound exhibit of how pop culture can be transformed into art that's actually quite captivating. About 70 artists contributed works, and the medium of choice is definitely oil and acrylic paint, with a fair number of mixed media pieces thrown in. The styles vary wildly, with influences ranging from surrealism to manga to skateboard art to graffiti to crafting to abstract to pixelation and on and on. It's actually a pretty decent overview of modern pop art sensibilities.

In terms of subject matter, far and away the most prevalent "inspirations" are from the Donkey Kong/Mario Bros. franchise, with Pac Man coming in next, and Frogger, Zelda, and Dig Dug also getting much play. However, some of the best pieces are from less popular games, like Tim Tomkinson's "Duck Hunter S. Thompson" mashup of a portrait of the gonzo journalist with the Sega "Duck Hunter" graphics, Jim Rugg's faux poster for a pro wrestling event featuring characters from the Nintendo wrestling game, or Jason Sho Green's pen and ink "Tantric Tetris". On the whole it's a very fun, well-designed book, nicely produced, and sure to bring a smile to many 30somethings. It's worth noting that I like Chuck Klosterman too, but his foreword is pretty slim, maybe 500 words, so don't buy it for that!

Rad, Awesome, and Other '80s Reactions Inspired by This Book.......2006-04-24

Where do I start? I found this gem listed under books from Chuck Klosterman, who I think speaks for an entire generation of 30-somethings raised on bad rock bands and crappy John Hughes movies. I gave it a shot, and wasn't disappointed!

In typical Chuck fashion, he analyzes video games and why they had an indelible affect on the childhoods of guys like me who spent about $3 million in quarters on Yie Ar Kung Fu (and why, 20 years later, guys i tell this to completely understand). For Klosterman fans, this is worth half the price right here.

But that's just 2% of the book! The rest is filled with totally awesome art that's hard to describe because I've never really seen anything like it--it's not advertising art, or game screenshots, or concept art from games. I guess it's just like the sub-title says, artwork inspired by what the artists played as kids in the 80's, but it's still hard to understand until you actually see it.

And what's really cool are the pieces that have quotes from the artists explaining their inspirations, why they used a particular game, or just random game memories--really funny stuff!

My favorites are:

1) Excitebike: Cool blocky render of a classic. Made me remember how I'd build my own track and line up all those turbo things.

2) Mega Man: I recognize this artist, Tim Biskup, from Juxtapoz and Super 7 magazines. Cool!

3) Don't Be a 2nd Player Hater (Luigi for Sheezy): Luigi pimped out like Snoop. Hilarious, yo!

4) Pac-Man in Hospice: This gives me nightmares. Especially the Frogger frog.

5) Record Dug Digger: Cross between skateboard art (in a good way) and NY graffiti. Trust me, it's awesome!

Other games I recognized include more mainstream stuff like Joust and Space Invaders to games that are a little more esoteric, like Contra, 720, Kid Icarus, and that weird robot thing that came with the NES. If you're a fan of the classics, I highly recommend it!

very cautious.......2006-08-17

You can't complain about a lawyer making sure you know exactly how bad things can get--it's their job. The one problem I have with "Risky Business..." is that the author goes to extreme great pains (sometimes the reader's) to disclaim any potential harm that might arise from the reading of this material blah-blah-blah... There are several legal agreements presented with descriptions; that's good. There is very little explanation of how the money works (who gets what and where it says so in which agreement); that's not so good. As an overview to how complex this field is, the book is good. The point of all of it is, essentially, if you get this far in movie-making, get an entertainment attorney who knows how to protect you, 'cuz there's no way you'll be able to do it on your own. Glad I read it. Now I can pass it along to someone else.

A fascinating study of a whole rock family tree!.......2003-01-15

The Small Faces & Other Stories Uli Twelker & Roland Schmitt

This is an updated version of the essential biography of all things Small and Facial. From Small Faces Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane to their respective Humble Pie/Faces bandmates Peter Frampton and Rod Stewart, everything fans want is here - discographies, extensive quotes and detailed analysis of each album, whether group or solo.

Twelker and Schmitt are journalists who are informed enough to be absolutely trustworthy, but also fans passionate enough to re-energize their beloved music with new insights. The stories of many backing musicians and other supporting characters are also told, giving the book a "family" charm that is especially poignant in light of the tragic deaths of Marriott and Lane. (One detail that cannot go unmentioned: the inclusion of Mary Frampton's recipe for Marriott's favorite pasta!)

The result is not only the definitive Small Faces book, it's the standard for rock biographers to follow in terms of completeness and accuracy. But not as far as visual attractiveness, now that the publisher unwisely decided to cut costs by removing all of the original book's photos. Still, since the various Faces crossed the paths of so many other stars of the 60's and 70's, and each encounter is discussed here, "The Small Faces and Other Stories" is a must for all rock fans. The only problem: if there's any group you love more than these original Mods, you'll be sad that Twelker and Schmitt haven't written a book about your favorites as well.

Educational and disturbing.......2006-02-17

I think this is a great book for anyone getting started in qualitative techniques with education. You can see that even qualitative researchers are forced to filter their work to make it palatable, as can be seen by comparing Wolcott's description of his subject in the first chapters with the reality he acknowledges later. Admittedly, not all researchers have quandaries such as the author did. But you may find Wolcott to be arrogant for his refusal to apologize or even consider responsibility (which he denigrates as an overt social control mechanism).

Racist Against the White Man.......2004-06-09

This book is yet another attempt at degrading the white race. There is nothing wrong with being white, just like there is nothing wrong with being black. If you want to hear someones idea on whats wrong with being white instead of looking at the facts then you should read this book.

A Working Definition of Race.......2000-06-29

David Roediger examines the growth and social construction of racism as it was related to the working classes of the ninteenth century. His scholarship earned him the Organization of American Historians Merle Curti Prize for US Social History in 1991. This work is brief, but dense in analysis, argument and scholarly interpretations.

The book basically explores how white workers (with an emphasis on Irish Americans) sought after a "wage" for their color, by placing on Black Americans the mantle of "other", objectifying and stratifying blacks into an object of prejudice and discrimination.

After a lengthy discussion of the historiography of labor and race issues, Roediger writes eloquently of the cultural formation of words such as slave, servant, hired hand, freeman, white slave, master and boss. All of which, he argues, were used to diferentiate between blacks and white laborers. He is careful to point out that it was the workers themselves who created the terms as a means to divide the races and elevate whites on the hierarchy of social status. It is a convincing arguement. The text concludes with an enlightening discussion of "black face" and the social struggles of the Irish, whom many felt in the majority viewed as "white negroes."

This book is scholarly and a read that demands one's attention.

This book challenges white male racism, proving once again that white males are racist not only when they are affluent, but when they are "working class", a term that bears some scrutiny, because even if a Black person recieves the same wages, they are of course subject to the horrors of racism. When *will* white males ever figure this out???

An excellent study of the social concept of race........1999-03-03

This book tackles the difficult subject of race relations among the working class of America. The time frame for this book is generally fom 1800 through the Civil war, as America was turning from an agricultural society to an industrial society. Slavery was drawing to a close, immigration had increased, and the urban populations of American cities were growing. All of these elements combined to create an urban working class complete with racial tension. Within this context, David R. Roediger defines the attitudes of race and race relation in a manner that is unique to most histories of urban studies. He not only records the developments of a racial identity, but he also examines the reasons why the white community defined itself as well as how the white community defined other groups. This book will probably stir a lot of controversy, but it will also answer many questions. Any historian or urban studies major can benefit form this book, but beyond college level readers, anyone interested in racial identities and racial differences can also appriciate this book.
