The Man Who Cried
ASIN: 0859653854 |
Book Description
Known for his quirky, edgy roles and smoldering good looks, Johnny Depp is one of Hollywood's most obsessively followed superstars. Although Depp has been making movies for over 20 years, he's clearly still in the prime of his career: his recent roles, in The Man Who Cried, Blow, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory show an actor at the top of his game, oozing the sex appeal and intense sensitivity with which he first mesmerized audiences in earlier oddball classics such as Cry Baby, Edward Scissorhands, and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? Currently ensconced in a quiet quarter of France with partner Vanessa Paradis, Depp's sturdy persona is penetrated in Johnny Depp. Updated to include the films Depp has made since the last edition, plus future projects and his several short-lived marriages and assorted romances, this book provides a thorough look at one of Tinseltown's least-understood actors.

A Good Book about Johnny Depp.......2007-03-08
It's a well written and comprehensive book about a great actor. It also has a lot of really nice photos.
Revised and updated .......2006-10-15
Perfectly timed for the latest 'Pirates of the Caribbean' blockbuster film is Johnny Depp: A Modern Rebel: a biography of the quirky actor whose good looks and lively adventures hide a rebellious young man whose drug-filled adolescence seemed unlikely to create a celebrity. From his volatile relationships and life to his evolving career and interest in independent, adventure-laden roles, is Johnny Depp: A Modern Rebel is revised and updated and comes packed with black and white and color photos.

good enough.......2006-08-03
I'd give 4 stars to that book just because I wanted to know more about Depp's childhood n stuff, but this book tells mainly about the movies Johnny has chosen. Still, it was an interesting read ! I think I would recommend.
fantastic.......2005-10-12
This book's format of Johnny Depp's life, movies and unique story is wonderful. I couldn't put it down. Each chapter is a movie title, showing how each part of his life changed during that movie experience. I didn't want to give it 5 stars, it deserves 10 stars!!!!
Johnny Depp: A modern Rebel.......2005-09-03
I thought this book was very well written. It was informative and the many photos were great. I have read other autobiographies and quite a few were not well written and could not keep my attention. This book was able to keep me wanting to read it to the end. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Johnny Depp.

Book Description
Thomas Buoye examines the impact of large-scale economic change on social conflict in eighteenth-century China. He draws on a large number of documented cases of violent property disputes to recreate the social tensions fostered by the development of property rights, an unprecedented growing population, and the increasing strain on land and resources. This book challenges the "markets" and "moral economy" theories of economic behavior. Applying the theories of Douglass North for the first time to this subject, Buoye uses an institutional framework to understand seemingly irrational economic choices.

Book Description
In mid-1943 James Megellas, known as “Maggie” to his fellow paratroopers, joined the 82d Airborne Division, his new “home” for the duration. His first taste of combat was in the rugged mountains outside Naples.
In October 1943, when most of the 82d departed Italy to prepare for the D-Day invasion of France, Lt. Gen. Mark Clark, the Fifth Army commander, requested that the division’s 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Maggie’s outfit, stay behind for a daring new operation that would outflank the Nazis’ stubborn defensive lines and open the road to Rome. On 22 January 1944, Megellas and the rest of the 504th landed across the beach at Anzio. Following initial success, Fifth Army’s amphibious assault, Operation Shingle, bogged down in the face of heavy German counterattacks that threatened to drive the Allies into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Anzio turned into a fiasco, one of the bloodiest Allied operations of the war. Not until April were the remnants of the regiment withdrawn and shipped to England to recover, reorganize, refit, and train for their next mission.
In September, Megellas parachuted into Holland along with the rest of the 82d Airborne as part of another star-crossed mission, Field Marshal Montgomery’s vainglorious Operation Market Garden. Months of hard combat in Holland were followed by the Battle of the Bulge, and the long hard road across Germany to Berlin.
Megellas was the most decorated officer of the 82d Airborne Division and saw more action during the war than most. Yet All the Way to Berlin is more than just Maggie’s World War II memoir. Throughout his narrative, he skillfully interweaves stories of the other paratroopers of H Company, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The result is a remarkable account of men at war.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible.......2007-10-04
After reading several reviews about this book, I felt compelled to comment.
I read Mr. Megellas' book after having the pleasure and honor of meeting him in the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. It was a real treat for me to have the opportunity shake his hand and talk with him for a few minutes. As time rolls on, opportunities to meet a veteran, much less a hero of World War II are few and far between. We talked a bit about Operation Market Garden and his plans to go to Holland. I can tell you that in my brief encounter with him that he was very proud, humble and personable.
With that said, I think that the critic's who accuse Mr. Megellas of being self-serving are very wrong in their assessment. This book is written in a style that is very direct, blunt, straight forward and "matter of fact". There are no words wasted beating around the bush or attempts at being politically correct. By his own accord, the author admits to us that it has taken him years to write these words because they are so painful to repeat. I do not get the sense that he is bragging. I get the sense that he is sharing his pain with the reader and giving us his impression of the unbelievable experience he lived through. It goes without saying this man is a hero.
This book is an excellent read and I would recommend it to anyone even remotely interested in World War 2 or combat. It's so packed full of action I can't believe they haven't made a movie about it.
All the Way to Berlin: A Paratrooper at War in Europe.......2007-05-17
One of the best combat narratives I have ever read. Engrossing, and compelling in its brutaly honest depiction of total warfare. Highly recomended.
Better than Band of Brothers.......2007-01-28
If anyone has read Band of Brothers as well as other war books, you will notice that James Megellas has been a resource for many. This book is a must read for anyone that enjoys War books. The book might not be elegantly written but you have to remember that this was written by a person that was there and not by some author embellishing the facts trying to make it a sexy book. Every once in a while I find myself picking the book up to re-read it.
Must Read American History.......2006-09-03
My wife and I had a few minutes to kill in Dallas/Ft. Worth before catching a connecting flight to our spring vacation destination. The airport was full of people. As we were cruising hte terminal for a bite to eat, I observed a distinguished-looking old man in full military dress uniform sitting quietly at a small card table precariously positioned between the throngs of traveling traffic and a tiny bookstore. On top of the table beside his folded hands was a small stack of books. The chaotic masses appeared oblivious to his presence. I noticed his chest full of medals.
Lt. James "Maggie" Megallas was the most decorated officer of the 82nd Airborne Division following World War II. From the rugged mountains of Naples in winter, and the beaches at Anzio, to the Battle of the Bulge, few men have survived more combat. 'All the Way to Berlin' is a sobering account of his experiences. I was awestruck by the daring and heroic crossing of the Waal River and the capturing of the bridges at Nijmegen as part of Montgomery's "vainglorious" Market Garden operation.
I pray that for the sake of the future of our nation you will remember these men and share their story with someone you love.
Excellent.......2005-08-27
This was another first hand account of an American Soldier who risked his life for our Freedom. These hero's are growing older and soon will be with us no more. Every American should pay homage to these men. They went through hell and this book is very descriptive of life on the front lines. The only negative, for me, was that Mr. Megellas seems a bit arrogant. However, in my opinion, Mr. Megellas and his buddies are truly America's finest generation!
Book Description
Jennifer HarburyÂ's investigation into torture began when her husband disappeared in Guatemala in 1992; she told the story of his torture and murder in Searching for Everardo. For over a decade since, Harbury has used her formidable legal, research, and organizing skills to press for the U.S. governmentÂ's disclosure of AmericaÂ's involvement in harrowing abuses in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. A draft of this book had just been completed when the first photos from Abu Ghraib were published; tragically, many of HarburyÂ's deepest fears about AmericaÂ's own abuses were graphically confirmed by those horrific images. This urgently needed book offers both well-documented evidence of the CIAÂ's continuous involvement in torture tactics since the 1970s and moving personal testimony from many of the victims. Most important, Harbury provides solid, convincing arguments against the use of torture in any circumstances: not only because it is completely inconsistent with all the basic values Americans hold dear, but also because it has repeatedly proved to be ineffective: Again and again, "information" obtained through these gruesome tactics proves unreliable or false. Worse, the use of torture by U.S. client states, allies, and even by our own operatives, endangers our citizens and especially our troops deployed internationally.
Customer Reviews:
Unique in bringing Central American history into the debate.......2006-03-14
Harbury is at her best when exploring the CIA's involvement in Latin America. She draws striking parallels between the torture and abuses committed in Central America in the 1980s & 90s and the heinous situation in Iraq today.
Where this book falls flat, however, is in her ability to go beyond a mere expose of the interrogation techniques that have become a matter of policy. Her recommendations for improving our country's adherence to international standards prohibiting torture lack teeth. She makes a very compelling argument about why it is wrong to torture, but does not make a convincing enough exploration of where we go from here. In addition, the parallel she tries to draw at the end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict feels forced and tangential.
Nonetheless, this book succinctly summarizes the major issues concerning the U.S. and torture and is a good primer for someone who may not be as familiar with the issues. Anyone who has kept up with the flood of articles appearing in the Washington Post, the New Yorker, the New York Review of Books and elsewhere, however, may find large pieces of this book repetitive.
Truth, Torture, and the American Way.......2005-10-17
Ms. Harbury's book is a must read for anyone interested in the facts surrounding America's all too frequent resort to terror and torture. Ms. Harbury is a true patriot who holds up a mirror to America and forces us to take a good long look at what's done by our Government in our name.
A Must Read for Anyone Who Cares About Human Rights .......2005-10-14
This book chillingly places the Bush Administration's torture policies in the proper historical perspective. The so-called war on terror is not the first time the U.S. has employed abduction, torture, and murder to further its political agenda. As Ms. Harbury thoroughly and unflinchingly reveals, throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s, the United States (directly and by proxy) abducted, tortured, murdered, and "disappeared" thousands of people in El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, all in the name of fighting communism. It is a history that American nationalists ignore or claim never really happened. It did happen and we are witnessing history repeated itself in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the various nations to which we ship detainees to be tortured. Anyone who cares about human rights should read this book. Anyone who does not care about human rights should also read this book, on the off chance that it may resuscitate his/her soul or conscience.
