Great Book.......2006-07-17
this book gives you a great detail on how to interpret art. I learned so much from it, and now, I feel like I can relate to all types of art. I never got tired of reading it, and I even loved the pictures being detailed and interpreted in there.

Book Description
The bestselling alternative comic of the 1990's, Odio (Hate) chronicles the misadventures, life experiences and repugnant habits of Buddy Bradley, oldest son of America's most dysfunctional suburban family. Buddy's moved to Seattle, which Bagge portrays as the grunge capital of the U.S.; a place of cheap apartments, cheaper drugs and plenty of lowlife, with rocker deadbeats working in used bookstores and organizing bands. American satirical cartooning at its most inventively hilarious. -Publishers Weekly I Love Hate. -Matt Groening creator of the Simpsons
Book Description
With his signature in-your-face, no-holds-barred advice, the Godfather of Independent Film teaches readers everything they need to know to create full-length feature films. From screenwriting ('There are two types of scripts: It's great or it sucks!') to distribution ('Who are the whores of Hollywood?'), Simens provides encyclopedic, precise, and creative instruction for making a vision a reality. By the end of the book, readers will know exactly what to do to make their films.
Customer Reviews:
The Independent Filmmaker's BIBLE!.......2007-09-20
I've read every book on Independent Filmmaking that I can get my hands on and this one book has more useful information than all of the others combined. I'm now shooting my forth feature length film and if I'd had this book before shooting the first three I'd be a lot better off today!
Mr. Nerd is apparently illiterate; though Simens does use a million dollar budget as an example of how to allocate your funds as he goes through all of the steps, this book absolutely does address budgets of every size from ten million dollars right down to your five thousand dollar digital feature for the Direct To Video market. I really don't see how anybody who had actually read the book could possibly miss this as the various budget constraints are addressed in almost every chapter as he takes you through the steps. In fact, he even outlines a method for shooting a feature length, 35 millimeter film on a five thousand dollar budget.
The two chapters on screenplay writing have more useful information than any book that I've read on screenplay writing and applying these techniques to my latest screenplay has resulted in the best work that I've ever done! That's one of the beautiful things about this book; Simens is not an egocentric, long winded babbler. He gives you just what you need to know and how to go about it.
This is the first book I've read that actually has useful information on things like fund raising and distribution options and how you might avoid getting ripped off... something that happens to so many of us aspiring filmmakers all the time.
I could probably write twenty pages about why this is the best filmmaking book ever written, but I will just say that every single page is packed with valuable, useful, practical information that actually makes sense.
Anyone who is seriously considering producing or directing a feature film, or even a short for that matter, needs to read this book three times, then use it as a reference when you start filming.
Great Read.......2007-08-05
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I thought it was very applicabale to real life situations and useful knowledge for my future.
Becoming the bible for independent moviemaking business.......2007-07-31
At first I was skeptical. Dov has never made a movie himself...just worked on a bunch and been around for awhile. It was obvious this is his three-day filmmaking seminar (and he honestly admits it). But I found new respect for Mr. Simens with his "take no prisoners" approach. He is brutally honest and doesn't sugar-coat things to not offend a tender wanna-be's feelings. If you're not going to be a serious filmmaker, he doesn't have time for you...just keep "playing" and get out of the way of those that want to become pros in the business.
This book is becoming the reference book amoung a growing field of independent moviemaking books serving the new boom in filmmaking. This is a must-have book. You'll be referring back to it time and time again. Dov tells it like it is!
Great Book!.......2007-07-25
Terrific resource for first time filmmakers as well as veterans! Takes you step-by-step through the entire movie making process with tons of tips. Two thumbs up!
What a truly excellent book............2007-04-11
This is an extremely authoratative, ho holds barred, straight to the the chase, expertly written and very thorough and complete book. It would be hard to imagine a more useful book to introduce anyone half interested to the world of film.
JM (England)
Book Description
This highly readable book is among the first to link social movement and cultural theory. Building on previous studies, the authors examine the mobilization of cultural traditions and the formation of new collective identities through the music of activism. Specific chapters examine American folk and country music, black music, music of the sixties, and the transfer of the American experience to Europe.
Book Description
"Music" referred only to the artistic, classical tradition of Western Europe and North America at the beginning of the twentieth century. However, several different traditions emerged by the end of the century. Written by experts in the field, this book surveys how the Western tradition was affected by the development of jazz, popular music, and world music and links the history of music with that of its social contexts.

Good grounding in Cable TV basics.......1998-06-19
This IEEE Press book provides an excellent overview of the cable industry and the technology used for Cable TV, MMDS (Multi-point Multimedia Distribution Service), and Direct Satellite Broadcasting. Although published in 1986 it is still useful to gain an understanding of how the cable business works. I found it to be a good resource in gearing up for a recently completed cable modem (IEEE 802.14)consulting project.
Book Description
When a devastating California wildfire consumed their home and all their possessions, Wayne Dosick and his wife Ellen faced the struggle of picking up the broken pieces of their lives and making themselves whole again. In When Life Hurts, Dosick shares a profoundly personal and inspiring meditation on confronting and overcoming tragedy.
Candidly discussing the feelings of anger, grief, and despair that devastating events bring, Dosick offers pragmatic advice on coping and explores the daunting spiritual questions raised: How can we keep faith in God when life seems so unfair? Where is God when we need God most? Finally, When Life Hurts traces the slow process of recovery and reveals how caring, joy, and new insights can emerge.

Better Books On the Subject.......2005-08-05
I was familiar with the late Dr. Weigley. I had met him a couple of times. He was a scholar.
However, A GREAT CIVIL WAR is not his best work. Dr. Weigley was an expert on 20th Century Military and Diplomatic History. He was also knowledgeable on the American Army. The American Civil War was not his area of expertise. While the text is brief, I found his frequent references to the 20th Century operational art of war out-of-context, and frankly not appropriate. His analysis of the diplomatic aspects of the American Civil War are the best part of the book.
There are better books on the American Civil War. However, there is always something to be learned from Dr. Weigley
A Basic Survey of the Civil War.......2005-05-06
After reading A GREAT CIVIL WAR I honestly wondered why Russell Weigley had written it. This is not Foote, nor Nevins, nor Catton. A passable 500 page history, this book could serve as a basic textbook for a survey course of the Civil War. Unfortunately it adds virtually nothing new to the seemingly endless scholarship on the subject.
While less dense than McPherson's BATTLE CRY OF FREEDOM that book remains the best single volume history of the war (an opinion Weigley endorses in his endnotes).
Weigley does a very good job in setting forth the war's root issues of cause and effect. His selection of subjects and the unequal weight he gives to battles is overly subjective, however. His battle descriptions are far too wordy, and it is too easy for a reader to lose the thread in the midst of the action.
A good "introductory" book to the subject for those unfamiliar with it, Civil War aficionados will find this book less than interesting.
Not as good as many other options out there.......2004-12-07
I have read my fair share of Civil War history books, and it's a good thing I have done so because this book would have completely lost me by about page 50 if that had not been the case. This book is not organized. It skips back and forth from the beginning of the war to the end to the middle and back to the beginning again. I know that it is probably hard to organize whether to do military or politcal history first, but this book does not do a good job of either because it never really figures out what it should be talking about at any given time. I have read books where the generals manage to come alive because we know what they were thinking, their history, whether they had a good family life, but this book gives no personality to ANYBODY. I abhor reading passages about Abraham Lincoln because although my view of him has changed over the years, I have mangaed to come to know him well. But this book basically shoots down any opinion any one has except for the author.
That is the one redeeming quality of this book. The author says, "Look, this is the way things were. If you don't like it, read someone else's history who really liked A. S. Johnston." Although none of his characters seem to have good traits, he also shoots down some that have been blown up over the years. The author's bluntness is rather refreshing in that sense.
Not to mention, of course, that my favorite aspect of the Civil War was the cavalry, and Weigley spends entirely too little time on that aspect.
I'd recommend James McPherson instead, whom I thought offered a much more comprehensive political view of the Civil War.
A Good Overview of "The Great Civil War".......2001-10-30
Written by a highly regarded US military historian, this book does a solid job of explaining why the Civil war happened, how it was fought, and why the North prevailed in the end. Dr. Weigley has done a nice job of adding his voice to the current discussion of the war by some of today's best historians.
Overall, the book is not the most stimulating reading, unless you are very interested in the subject (i.e.- you have already done some reading about the war). None the less, I really enjoyed the first part of the book (about the roots of the war and military strategy used in this era), and the end of the book (about why the North prevailed, and how the Confederacy collapsed so quickly, in the end) the most. I think that Dr. Weigley makes some great insights during these two sections.
In a bit of a surprise, the political sections of the book are better written and more interesting to read than the military sections. I find this slightly strange, because of Dr. Weigley's expertise in US military history. For some key battles (Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville), he gives only a cursory summary, and does not add any new insight into these battles and their outcomes. I guess I expected to learn more about the military perspective than the political one by reading this book. But I must admit that it ended up the other way around for me, in this case.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, but I must agree with a previous reviewer that this book is not on the same level as Battle Cry of Freedom by James McPherson. Simply put, if you have time (and/or interest) to read only one book about the war, don't read this one. Read the McPherson book instead. It is a more thorough and enjoyable book.
On the other hand, if you are a student of the war (I fall into this category), or consider yourself a Civil War buff, this would be a good choice to add to your Civil War library
Brilliant One-Volume History........2001-07-13
Most books about the Civil War lack context. Buy a book about Gettysburg, and you discover that Fredericksburg was an issue, as was the leadership of Hooker. So you back up and read some other book about Fredericksburg. Then you scream: is there NO decent one-volume overview, something short of Shelby Steele and Bruce Catton and the 10 volumne version? This is the book. Very readable, captures all of the battles and strategies within a political framework. Weigley's discussion of Fort Sumter is a classic, exploring why Sumter closed the major port of the South, and occupying Sumter forced the South to open hostilities and clarify their intentions. This book opens up all of the controversies of the Civil War buff, without settling any... what a valuable book!
Book Description
How did Abraham Lincoln, long held as a paragon of presidential bravery and principled politics, find his way to the White House? How did he become this one man great enough to risk the fate of the nation on the well-worn but cast-off notion that all men are created equal?
Here award-winning historian John C. Waugh takes us on Lincoln’s road to the Civil War. From Lincoln's first public rejection of slavery to his secret arrival in the capital, from his stunning debates with Stephen Douglas to his contemplative moments considering the state of the country he loved, Waugh shows us America as Lincoln saw it and as Lincoln described it. Much of this wonderful story is told by Lincoln himself, detailing through his own writing his emergence onto the political scene and the evolution of his beliefs about the Union, the Constitution, democracy, slavery, and civil war. Waugh brings Lincoln’s path into new reliefby letting the great man tell his own story, at a depth that brings us ever closer to understanding this mysterious, complicated, truly great man.

Book Description
Wallis draws on his experience in urban ghettos to show why traditional liberal and conservative options that emphasize either social justice or personal values fall short. He looks outside the traditional corridors of power to find solutions. Foreword by Garry Wills; Preface by Cornel West.
Customer Reviews:
Is there any hope for contemporary politics?.......2007-08-26
I must admit, as a Black living in America, I'm inclined to read works written mostly by Black authors. As I began to read this book and learn about some of the social activism (i.e. working with inner city youths in the D.C. area) of the author, I was surprised to learn that he's of European descent. Not that I think there aren't any white folk who are willing to fight socially for people of color, it's just you don't hear about them very often. This book was very refreshing in that sense.
Although published in the 90's, this book is very applicable to the political landscape of today. Mr. Wallis very effectively points out the shortcomings of both parties and conveys the need for social responsibility and social justice. One of his most brilliantly stated positions is, "Liberalism is unable to articulate or demonstrate the kind of moral values that must undergird any serious movement of social transformation; the critical link between personal responsibility and societal change is missing on the left. Conservatism, on the other hand, still denies the reality of structural injustice and social oppression; to call for individual self-improvement and return to family values while ignoring the pernicious effects of poverty, racism, and sexism is to continue blaming the victim." He argues very effectively I might add that we [Americans of all backgrounds] need a politics that will encompass, at the least, the basic needs of all people - not just the middle class as most of the politicians like to point out, but the poor as well.
This book is a powerful and prophetic call to a politics of spirituality. Please heed the call America!
An Alternative to Politics.......2007-01-20
Jim Wallis takes on the world with this book. Evan though written more than 10 years ago, it is even more relevant today. I read his book "God's Politics" before reading this one, and there are few substantive differences, though one was written before 9/11 and one after. If anything, Jim Wallis is consistent in his belief in a non-violent approach to conflict. If you're looking for an alternative philosophy to those of the dominant two parties, this is one to consider. He advocates not a compromise toward the middle, but rather a radical transformation of U.S. and world societies, emphasizing justice and real equality, not the self-serving kinds disguised in the rhetoric of both conservatives and liberals.
As a self-proclaimed evangelist, the author occasionally offers well-known Biblical quotes to support his theses. He cites the need to return to a spiritually-based brand of politics, with emphasis on a redistribution of economic wealth as one means to avoid an otherwise inevitable uprising by the world's poor and oppressed. This latter group, in isolated areas around the world, is already beginning to make noise, and Wallis says that their initiative is essential because the relatively wealthy and powerful are not willing to give up their status and rewards in order to promote a more level playing field.
If everyone read this book and absorbed its contents, and acted out the recommendations that Wallis suggests, the world would be topsy-turvy tomorrow -- and in a good way. But those in power around the world are not likely to revere such a radical transformation.
A call to action.......2006-11-10
In some ways I wish I hadn't read this book, because now I have to do something. While I'm not sure what exactly that will be - something will change in my life.
Jim Wallis is a modern day prophet. There haven't been many in a long time. I am excited about what he and his organization are doing. I am excited about what I can do. I am excited about what each of us can do to make this a better world, one person at the time.
This is a must read no matter how hard it is to hear what he has to say.
Faith Renewed.......2005-11-14
As someone that journeyed into the political life of this nation as a young man, I came to have a jaded and pessimistic view of the entire body politic. Watching the workings of committees and the deal making process that is the creation of legislation, I became convencied that entering public life would mean a compromise of my faith, values, and sense of social justice. I left political life disgusted with both sides. However, after reading the Soul of Politics, I have become excited and refreshed to know that on the rise, a movement is working to bringing true faith in God and eachother into serious political discourse. I believe that now, more than ever, people are sick of the abuse and perversion of the faith that the "religious right" trumphets as the "will of God," and the ignorance of the "secular left" in completly disregarding the faith as irrevelant in solving social and political problems. This is not simply an ideological portrait of how things could be, but, a plan that is working in areas across this country. I reccomend this book to anyone that believes we need a new direction and center in the public life of our nation. Out of the numerous books on public policy and political science that I have read in university and these last six years after graduation, The Soul of Politics was the most important. I only wish that I had found Sojourners before leaving D.C.
The best of both.......2005-10-14
Jim Wallis gets it! What we need is what both liberals and conservatives affifm (not what they deny). We need the compassion and the societal ethics that liberals affirm and the sense of individual responsibility and personal ethical responsibility conservatives affirm. Neither by itself is adequate. Wallis has three parts to the book. First, The Conversion of Politics, issuing in a prophetic spiritualit. Second, The Broken Community, dealing with consumerism, classism, racism and sexism. Third, Toward and Alternative Vision, in which he lists seventeen "signs of transformation."
His call is for us all to become engaged in embodying the vision personally and working to embody it politically. It is a challenging book, but full of hope.
