This book presents the text with a great introduction and a superb appendix, thus making the book half text and half commentary ... perfect for the student. this text might be a nice way to slide into Hegel. Plus, Penguin Books smell so nice.

Black Male Beauty on Its on Terms.......2006-07-25
At first I thought this book would be a glossy version of stereotypical Black erotica. Instead I found an unabashed celebration of the beauty of the Black male body in various dimensions, positions, moods, and ambiances. The book is worth the buy.

The photography is of a high level from a technical point of view. True, there is a lot of versatility, but that is not the same as creativty. I expected the book to represent the Black male figure in new ways: I was left with old, stereotypical view-points. To be truly versatile, a photographer needs the intelligent eye of an artist like Rotimi Fani-Kayode: an ability to present an erotic image that plays seriously with received cultural images, so as the result is connected to the roots of Eros: curiousity, playfulness and passion. Truly versatile, yes, but this book did not offer many versatile truths.

Tremendously funny.......2001-05-18
This book, which is a parody of Cosmopolitan magazine, was given to me several years ago as a gift. It is absolutely hilarious! It parodies the magazine using cows instead of people.
Some of the articles are "Do You Have A Job? How to Tell for Sure", "How to Milk Your Ex for Everything" and features like "Mr. Avail-A-Bull." The "advertisements" are pretty funny too. My favorite was for the "Sometimes" sanitary pad. "Sometimes. . . When always is too much, and never is not enough."
This book is written by a former pig farmer turned comedian. He has other books like "Penthorse" and "Playboar" which are also animal based parodies of popular publications. His latest effort is "Vague" magazine.

This had all the bizarre,and perverse stories I have read in a long time. I have read accounts of some of these deaths but they weren't quite as sordid as these.

I read the book "And Then I wrote: the Songwriter speks because of the simple reason that I had seen Tom Russell life in my home town before and I was interested what this book was about when I saw it in the library. I had it for 6 weeks and read the whole book of quotes over and over again, and in the end I had the feeling that I could read it ten thousand times more. Yesterday I was at a show of his again, and I talked to him for a while and I got the feeling as if I had understood him much better because of this book.

Tyson and Russell, both accomplished song writers in their own right, have taken great care to compile stories from a diverse gathering of song writers, both known and unknown. The chapters, each prefaced by one of the editor's own tales, are divided up by subject, but within each chapter the reader is treated to a wide variety of tales about the birth of songs, the struggles of writing, and the thrill having a song "make it." The mix of writers, from rock to folk to classical, means that there is something for everyone. But the great part about reading through the quotations and stories is discovering a writer you didn't previously know about, and learning something new by reading about their writing process. This is a great book for anyone who has ever written a song, a poem, a book, or even just a report for school. Within the struggle to create music and lyrics are the struggles we all face when create anything of meaning in our lives.

Not What I Expected, But Lovely All The Same..........2003-10-07
An exploration of the Indian film industry through photographs was definitely not what I expected when I initially purchased this book, but the beauty and drama of the images, made it worth the cost. This book does NOT contain any relevant information (history, films, etc.) on Bollywood; it's a coffee table book. The photos themselves (of film stars to the mania of the theaters and fans) brilliantly capture the dynamics and glamour of the industry and it's trance-like hold over it's millions (if not billions) of fans!!!

WAR - A REAL TRUE IMPACT STORY.......2007-04-23
I first read this when first release and just purchased another copy. If you want to read about two real heros, James Stockdale and his wife Sybil Stockdale read this book. They write side by side in spirit, him in a Vietnames prison, the Hanoi Hilton, and she home with thier children. One of the best love, war and a story that you will remember.
Gripping and Tender.......2005-12-20
The late Vice Admiral Jim Stockdale was the highest ranking POW to return from captivity in North Vietnam. His wife Sybil kept the family focused and hope alive all throughout his long imprisonment.
They present alternating chapters that chronicle their personal challenges which are a microcosm of the nation's challenges at that time.
This should be required reading for all Americans.

The BEST book I have ever read. His recount of what he went through is outstanding. I cannot believe the personal, physical, emotional and spiritual strength it took to endure 8 years as a prisoner of War... and the ways in which he communicated with other POW's, his wife and the US government is unbelievable... brilliant. I read this book 2 years ago and gave it to a friend who gave it to another couple friends cross country... eventually I got it back and gave it to my brother who gave it to his buddy... I think either my dad or my uncle has it now. The best book I have read. I reccommend it to anyone. and I can't wait to read it again.

Buyer beware of bookin2002@yahoo.com. I paid $60.00 for a book that was supposed to be in very good condition. When it arrived, the front cover was water damaged and the book was a third edition. $60.00 for a third edition? Not a very good deal.
True American Hero on Vietnam and his country.......2000-04-27
Remember James Stockdale running for Vice President in the early 90's under the third party? He was perhaps the candidate with the greatest personal integrity in ages.
This book is just as genuine and is a vivid examination of what it's like to be a POW in brutal captivity for years. The book also has his reflections on the present-day U.S.. Here, he is refreshing, and can be brutally candid on such institutions as the South's best-known anachronistic walled military place.
Mostly though, it's the love story between what he and his wife have been though these years. No candy coating: A rare American hero with the straight story.

I have ordered this book in its many editions for classes that I have taught on Congress and Legislative Politics. It is one of the best general texts available--and readily accessible to those who are simply interested in the politics of Congress.
One of the key points made by the authors is that there are "two Congresses": One of these is the Congress of "how a bill becomes a law," of the actions and politics characteristic of Capitol Hill. The other is the operation of representatives in their home districts, acting on behalf of their constituents, "the folks back home." The two worlds that members of Congress live in (Washington D. C. and "back home") can produce tensions and dilemmas for members of the legislature. But these conflicts help us to understand the complex nature of Congressional politics and decision-making.
Lawmakers cannot just live in the one Congress or the other. They must navigate and negotiate between the two.
This text covers the full territory, from the history of Congress, to how one ends up getting elected to Congress, to how Congress works and its interactions with other key political actors, to the policy process of which Congress is a key.
For anyone--students or citizens--interested in the nature of Congress, this represents a good starting point.

Excellent Textbook on Congress.......2004-08-27
This is probably the best textbook on Congress for undergraduates that I have seen. Primarily I like it because it's easy to read and very well written, covers all the important topics, and is not tedious. Now you might think being easy to read isn't important since it's for college students. But believe me, if you want students to actually read the assignment, more engaging texts are important.

If you are looking for a textbook for upper-division classes on Congress, this is the one. It is thorough, full of interesting stories and examples, it's not too long, and it's easy to read. Oh, and it has lots of pictures! If you want to know how the US Congress works, this is the best text I've seen.

"Congress and Its Members" is an excellent textbook for any government student wanting a thorough introduction into the actions and events of the United States' Senate and House of Representatives. The discussion found in the book ranges from the differences between the two houses, their procedures, methods of governance, etc... This book is very easy to read and comprehend what the authors convey.

Good information - and pictures too.......2005-03-22
Wherever you are in the City it's hard not to be aware of the many types of birds to be seen in your back yard or from your balcony. This book is perfect for all budding ornithologists, as it contains clear non-jargon descriptions of our local birds, well-coloured pictures, and good background information. Take care - birding is addictive! You start with a lazy look out the window at a strange bird. Then you go buy your first book, like this one, to put a few names to a few beaks. Next you find yourself buying birdfood and putting up nesting ledges and houses to attract more birds. It's the slippery slope to birdmania, and many enjoyable hours of bird watching. Enjoy!
